Reference from real life isn't cheating. Reference from others art can land you in hot shit if you're too good at it and copy it perfectly. Nothing wrong with appreciating how another artist does eyes for example, and trying to learn how to do his eyes on your own art. It becomes a problem when you're borrowing poses and just throwing a different swimsuit and head on the character. Keep in mind if you get too good at drawing from reference people might think you're tracing, so shake up whatever inspiring you.
Drawing from imagination takes years of practice unless you're doing incredibly stylized cartoony type comics.

Google reverse image search brought me to a Newgrounds page (dabbledraws.newgrounds.com/art/) with no scat, and a Twitter account (twitter.com/DabbleDoodles) that also doesn't have scat. Something is very wrong with the left side of the face, the hat and ear make a early awkward tanget.
The foot on the ground is at the wrong angle will the toes of the paw. Not sure all the little lines of the drip work with the simple style, maybe try some soft strokes with a different brush? Maybe just three soft opacity, oval broken rings.
