Believe it or not, almost everyone involved in making a game is talented – for a given definition of the word. I mean "talented enough to find other jobs." You have both 2d and 3d artists, programmers, sound engineers, hell, even many of the writers could make a much better living elsewhere. I understand they want to make video games too. I shared that dream. I knew when I was five or six years old and I played Doom that I wanted to be a programmer – I thought to myself, "I want to understand everything that makes this work." But in college, I decided to be an enterprise programmer because that was the only way I could maintain self-respect. I wasn't going to take a job which doled out down to half the pay in many cases, double the hours and with more insufferable management. I love games but there's a certain point where I have to decide I'm not going to be an underpaid Pajeet-tier coder working under Chaim-tier management just so I can say I'm doing something I wanted to do since I was a kid. It helps that I still enjoy coding other software. Anon, I have some bad news for you. No programmer with skills works in videogame dev. They work for one of the big corps like Amazon or Google, they work in the finincial sector for some company like JP Morgan, or they work in the network field for Cisco or someone. Because that's where the six figure and up salaries are. Videogame programmers are the lowest paid programmers period, both overall and on average. Unless you specifically learned programming just to make videogames, odds are if you are a videogame dev, it's because you didn't have the skills in order to work as a real programmer.

Crunch-time really doesn't exist outside of game dev. Because it's illegal to expect your workers to work that amount of overtime, and to threaten to fire or retaliate if they don't. And any software house understands programmers don't make good code when sleep deprived. Videogame devs tolerate it for one simple reason. They know they can't find programming work outside of videogames since they lack the skills. They know gamedev is overly bloated in terms of people who want to get in as well. Much like how the movie and music industries have a never ending flood of people who want in, so does gamedev. Same for any "creative" entertainment industry. And like most entertainment industries, most of the people involved are willing to tolerate all kinds of shit in the hope of making it big.
