Why do people love this dude so much?
>Looks like your average independent strong female swordsman. But it's actually a trap at first glance.
>Special snowflake fighting style where he's punching monsters more than actually cutting them with the damn sword in his hand.
>Longest and most boring Mystic Arte in the series.
>So called ladies man but just wants to fuck his blonde friend.
>His way of "Justice" simply works with no repercussions what so ever just because making the whole point of following the lawful way pointless.
Almost as bad as Emil from Tales of Symphonia KoR.
Jokes aside though. Yuri was a fun MC and I enjoyed the whole crew in Tales of Vesperia. Made this thread because I just realized the Definitive Edition is coming out tomorrow on the 10th. No clue if it has Denuvo though. This is Bamco we're talking about. I would just wait for a crack if that's the case. Seriously though, Savage Wolf Fury is a pretty boring Mystic Arte that lasts way too long. It doesn't have shit on Rebirth Crusader.

784463 No.15971593
>>15971537
For most of the series, I would definitely say so. Later games in the series started implementing fighting game mechanics into them. Especially this game.
>3D combat where you and 3 other people (AI or real people) beat the shit out of enemies with crazy combos.
>Hitting the enemy's weakness can give you a chance to instant kill them.
>Overlimit removes all restrictions so you can do big combos like in the webm.
>You can also juggle enemies and there's a character specifically made for aerial combat.
>Every character has a unique playstyle and there's actual depth to learning everything. Like how free-run attacks can pick people off the ground so you can continue the combo.
>No need to grind if you're good. The better you play, the more GRADE the game rewards you with.
>Every battle is rated to where playing smartly grants you GRADE. This translates into more post game content depending on how well you did on the previous playthrough. You can get 3x damage, a higher difficulty (unknown/mania), 3x EXP or money, 1/2 EXP, solo mode (for people who like doing solo challenges) and more.
And that's just this game. Some of the other games excel at different things. Like Tales of Graces F has no aerial combat but is still considered one of the best combat systems in the series. Tales of Xillia and Hearts R have better aerial combat than Vesperia. Destiny has some of the best 2D combat in the series as well. Rebirth is 2.5D combat with a pretty unique battle system where you manage a rage meter and certain moves either calm you down or increase your rage. There are nearly no healing spells and you heal yourself by playing defensive and attacking with calming attacks. Or you can keep up pressure with high rage attacks.

In that combo video. It may look like he's just spamming attacks but there's actually a bunch of guard cancels, hard knockdown attacks, running attacks to get them out of hard knockdown (only a few moves can do this), properly timed overlimit bursts between attacks that wouldn't normally chain together, and keeping the chain going with Burst Artes that can only be done in overlimit.
You can play by spamming the same moves over and over but if you want to play with style like it's DMC then the game allows you to do so. You just need to know what you're doing.

Only ever managed to enjoy Tales of Phantasia. Tried Eternia, Destiny etc. But never clicked like the first game did. Played it like four times through; SNES twice, GBA halfway through and the PS1 version twice plus the first time I got halfway into it before any translations were even out. I was outraged the first time I played the GBA version, because I thought it had been censored. Fun times.

There are several versions of Phantasia, but which one would you recommend between SNES, PS1 and PSP?
84d201 No.15971967
>>15971833
Haven't tried the PSP version but I've heard a lot of good about it. Honestly between the SNES and PS1 version, it just comes down to which graphics you prefer. The newer re-releases have some more story and content, but the base game is still the same and I prefer the SNES sprites.
So while I've played through the PS1 version more, when I just want to chill in that setting I go for the SNES version because the graphics complement that unique dry fantasy setting so well. The problem in my opinion with a lot of the later Tales games is that the art direction and world feel more anime-y and less Tolkien-y.
I mean look at the protagonists in the various games. The Cless re-design is pretty bad too, because he's wearing fucking spandex(I'm not entirely sure at which point the design was made, but I'm speaking in regards to what was in the games). The original sprites look a lot more interesting, honestly.
84d201 No.15972022
Here's some screenshots. Top row is PS1, I think. Middle is SNES and bottom is GBA.
The town/dungeon are good in both the SNES and PS1 version, but the sprites feel kinda of jarring in the PS1 and GBA versions. They're too bright.
I really hate the simple 3D map they have for the overworld in the PS1 version, it's like with the Star Ocean remake, where they added in an overworld map which scrapped all the beautiful terrain they'd had.
For the battle screen, the backgrounds are really neat across all three even if GBA looks like it's a corrupted JPG at times. As far as sprites go, I think the PS1 actually has more different weapons, and it has more bells and whistles since they added some stuff from the later games into the mechanics.
Overall, only the GBA version is shit. Pure eyecancer.

For example, he is actually right-handed, but learn to fight left-handed because he often get into fights with them tin can knights. He knows those dimwits were poorly overly strictly trained so anyone using any tricks outside the books/training can pretty hand their asses to them.

Do not listen to that other nerd. Graces F refined the quintessential essence of the entire franchise into one game and delivered it with grace and aplomb. It is the most sublime Tales experience and every game afterwards is merely trying to recapture its lightning.
It has the best combat of all. It has the best skits of all. It has decent characters. The plot is the same story they've been rehashing for 10+ years so whatever. It buffed the CC system to a well-polished sheen the likes of which have never been seen before. Yuri was a different flavor of MC, which came out as wildly different compared to your honest-power-of-friendship fluff kinda MC, or the 'It's not my fault' MC.
I played the translated PS3 version, and to be honest I didn't expect the early act villains getting killed directly by Yuri in cutscenes. The sand one in particular was nasty.
Combat wise, he's meh. All the twirls he does with the sword piss me off. I used Estelle at first and then switch to best girl -Patty- while my co-op bro used Rita. Late game meteor spam was fun, but hopefully it doesn't lag as much on the PS4 (and it'd better not be censored by Kusony).

>Abyss (PS2, 3DS official releases). PS2 has long load times in certain areas but looks and plays better. Also, undub available for PS2, dunno for 3DS.
>Legendia (PS2, made by Tekken staff). Kinda weird, doesn't have co-op like the other ones. Undub available, but it doesn't restore all voice clips
>Graces F (PS3, more content than the JP only Wii version). Undub available for cfw
>Vesperia (X360 meh version, PS3 JP only but the patch is floating around if you have cfw, official 'definitive' version coming out tomorrow)
>Xillia 1 (PS3) Undub available for cfw

You don't have to follow any release order but the first game is Tales of Phantasia (get the PSX version). Only games like Tales of Destiny 2 (not to be confused with Tales of Eternia which got labelled Tales of Destiny II in the US), Xillia 2, and Symphonia 2 require you to play the first game. You can jump right into Vesperia for the most part but most people started with Symphonia (also on PC and the best version). My favorite in the series is Eternia followed by Graces F. Eternia is all around a solid JRPG just like Symphonia while Graces F has a shit story and a god tier combat system and other mechanics that really add to the gameplay.
Gameplay here is from Destiny DC. If you try to fight the post game boss on the easiest mode, he becomes even stronger than the version you fight on the hardest mode.

I haven't played Zestiria but I haven't heard good things about it. Combat wasn't considered that good and had many camera issues. It also had this awful DLC scam where the female MC was removed from the game half way into the plot for nearly no reason. Only to be included as a DLC in a side story. To add to insult, all her weapons and items were available in later shops in the game meaning she was taken out last minute and added as DLC. Others have also said there are conversations that feel bizarre because if feels that "someone else" should be saying a line that isn't there.
As for Berseria, it's OK. The combat system is heavily momentum based and is fun when you have the momentum but absolutely sucks when you don't. Especially early on when you don't have tools you should honestly start off with like the guard breaking red aura. The music is forgettable and the dungeon/level design is nearly non existent for the most part. The plot isn't bad and the cast is pretty good this time around. I would say it would be a better idea to play something else.
>>15972995
I love and hate Tales of Graces F. The hate comes from a plot that started off with something great and ended up being generic as hell. However I just love the gameplay. I'm going to ignore the combat for a sec because the Eleth Mixer system its self is one of the best mechanics I've seen in the series.
>You get a magic jar that does various things. It makes items, cooks food, and applies passives.
>The more items it makes, the more stuff you can put in it in general. Items/materials are made all the time at random while running around and fighting. If you manage things properly, you can craft most of the gear you need without grinding for them.
>It also cooks food during the battle by meeting certain conditions. Like getting an attack boost when you reach 20% health or instant revive upon death.
>You can also have passives like getting a huge stat increase if you play solo or you gain much more money if you finish battles quickly.
>You can have these all at the same time making it so you can customize the way you play just based on what you put in the mixer.
They really need to bring this mechanic back. It was way too good not to attempt again. The title system was nice too but I like Heart R's way of gaining artes and stats.

Imagine Berseria's combat but to do any real damage you had to remove one of your party members to "armatize". Also imagine if you had Eleanor and she got removed randomly for absolutely no reason and got replaced with what honestly feels like one of the worst mary sues in video games. Why does Soray take her along "she's the second most pure person ever!1!" why is she the leader of a band who murders people for money then, "they dindu nuffin they was good boys who only killed bad people". Like they even make a big plot point out of her killing her first thing ever… except that goes nowhere. The other FeMC literally just gets written out of the plot because Soray didn't want to say that the abbey had demons even though she was basically just like "yo say something and I'll go along with it even if it's not true" and then later she's a boss fight and he then is just like "YUR NOT PURE ENUFF ANYMORE" and walks away and then she's never seen again. It's the worst tales story. God help you if you played that before berseria though, because berseria's entire plot is spoiled by zestiria. Not even in a "you know how it's going to end" but almost every character interaction, group, and character is from zestiria in one way or another.

The armor system and gems in Graces F were pretty unique too. When I was playing with a friend, we were wondering why the hell Pascal was a tank and would never die despite being a mage. We accidentally built her as a tank. Saying that, we also never invested in accuracy which is one of the most important stats in the game. Good luck stunning anything for more than half a second. It made Emeraude a nightmare to fight against. I wonder if she was supposed to join the team at some point. I have a feeling they wrote her off for budget reasons. The way momentum worked was incredibly terribly thought out. Yes, you punish players for doing poorly and reward players for doing well, but the way it works means that the second you start losing, the game becomes objectively worse to play. You lose options, not even just broken as shit options like the abilities, but moves out of your combo. I'm not even sure an attempt was made to balance abilities. I will admit, I liked Magilou's ability to cancel out enemy spells and then use them to fire off a huge spell, but the momentum system is entirely pointless if you don't have those abilities tied to that. I'm sure they could have come up with some other, better way to do that.

Not to mention Velvet is completely overpowered. People thought endgame Yuri and Rita were absurd but Velvet takes 0 thought to play and is practically invincible for most of your combos if you know how to chain the claw slaps. When I did a co-op playthrough with a friend, we avoided using Velvet because she trivialized any challenge.
>You lose options, not even just broken as shit options like the abilities, but moves out of your combo.
You take 1 or 2 hits and you're stuck doing 1-2 attacks only trying to fish for cubes. You might as well be playing Tales of Phantasia at that point. The TP and arte chaining system in most Tales games didn't allow for big combos but they didn't cripple your combos into 2 attacks either. CC system gave you a few attacks to work with but massive combos when you gained momentum. Berseria doesn't even give you this option until post game. I went with Eizen because he played similar to Pascal and was pretty fun. But if you can't stun a single enemy then he's useless. It got easier to do later when you get more stun attacks but early on you barely have any which cripples his character.

No, actually invincible. She can't die even if her health reaches zero in that state. As long as you can keep it up, or heal just before dropping the state, you will never die. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the swordsman who has an ability based on counters. Which is a good idea, even if it can get a bit dicey between the allies spamming mystic artes to fuck up the flow of the battle, and battles becoming a visual mess if you have mages on the field. The problem is that fucking up a counter is punished as hard/harder as wasting a period of invincibility with a damage boost for Velvet. Balance was completely fucked for those abilities.

Eizen is built around it but if he doesn't have enough SG to use his move it can ruin the momentum. Hell using it could also ruin the momentum too.
The whole system works well when playing solo or with 2 characters but not with 4 because people are tripping over others. Laphecet and Magilou are the only 2 that work well with everyone else. Even in Graces F I didn't find that Mystic Artes were ruining people's combos. Probably because they could actually stun enemies.

When was the last time a Tales game even had a semen demon? Speaking of which, a large majority of Tales art is SFW and wholesome. Maybe due to the large female fanbase.

this one if the weakes imo … or maybe it's because it was because i played it after symphonia and vesperia.
The story was bad .. or rather … it linear. well, sure ok, Tales of game are linear but unlike other tales of game: on this one:
>you are just chasing a king until the end… so when i finally caught up with him … it was over.
symphonia, vesperia, xillia, all of them had a "hidden story" that revealed itself halfway thought the adventure… hell for vesperia 3 time i though i reach the end of the game…
Yea grace was bad, you just chase the king for 40h, you know everything there is to until the end, and the F part .. well i was already burnned up. (and there was something about the graphics that felt like 2d in 3d world … strange)
tl;dr
i really, strongly disliked how your initial objective is actually … the final objective.

You know after years of hearing Jap I can't stand English dub anymore with two notable exceptions:
FF12 and Vesperia.
Shame Yuri's VA got picked up by normalfags. I am happy for him that he can do decent paying jobs now though. I hope the rest of the cast landed on their feet too.

Gotta say, I really prefer the fan translation's take on the names of the mystic artes, and hoo boy does the performance for them feel really damn phoned in, which given modern tales should be expected. Like, 'Radiant Bladewing' is technically official thanks to the mobage that got translations, but fuck is it way too god damn literal and wonky sounding. Not saying they should have outright used the fan translation, but they could have done way fucking better.

Doesn't surprise me, I was expecting the official translation to be messier than the PS3 patch one. It's just par for the course in Bamcoland.
Can't wait for Kaji's rant post

What the fuck is the point of the free run attack? By the time your recovery frames end the enemy will always have recovered from the stagger and started stunlocking you.

Graces F isn't liked because of the plot. It's simply because it has some of the best gameplay in the series. The plot went from chasing the king and stopping a war to befriending a BOW from a dying planet that's set out to kill humanity due to the actions of awful people on its planet. I don't care for the plot either and it could have been a good story about taking responsibility and redemption. But it became very generic and forgettable.
>>15985057
The point of the free-run attack is to pick up fallen down enemies off the ground to continue a combo and bypass their super armor when they get up. See >>15971593

Depends on the character, but Yuri's will pick up enemies that are knocked down, and you can cancel from there back into your base artes. Its a really important tool for him.
Also, you can cancel a good chunk of the recovery on just about everything by holding the free run button and putting the stick in the direction your character is facing. This will make your character free run forward, but if you hold guard too, you can start instantly blocking way earlier than you would have otherwise. This only works in manual mode. Using manual cancels, you can do an EZ infinite as soon as you get Cerberus Strike, since there is just enough hitstun on the last hit to make it possible to start another normal attack string.

Is the ps3 patched version still best?
I found myself too overwhelmed with what artes to grind and what ability to set that I spent too long looking at them every time I changed characters.
I also got pissed that I missed some side quests permanently because I didn't go backwards and explore when the plot says SHIT IS GOING DOWN YOU NEED TO GET TO X RIGHT AWAY.
So I never finished it. I must have ocd or autism or something.

It works. But very early and extremely inefficient. You need a high end system for it. Also expect some serious glitches.

The best combat in the series. Berseria doesn't compare. Hate the fact that they assign numerical values to skills (eg Skill X takes 15 amount of soul gauge) while the soul gauge itself is a bar with no numerical values attached to it.
Too bad the story and characters weren't great, though. But Pascal is fun.

It's not even a bar like Zesty's clearly-separated-in-4-parts SG bar. It's just a line of diamonds, and they're really damn hard to discern. At best you can estimate you have either 'half diamond' or 'full diamond' (full being 30 soul IIRC).
