If you know how to cook using an actual oven, and have a variety of fresh ingredients and know how to season things, you can make things leagues better than you could with the easy bake oven.

I'll describe the situation to you how the professor here who offers some fine arts courses said - "The best art colleges offer six-year educations, and on top of that, another six years of intensive study honing your skills - here we try to condense that work into a couple of courses that last twelve two-and-a-half-hour classes." Even if the curriculum is more extensive, you still run into the same problem of US-style courses simply not being extensive enough to cover all the materials that unis even in communist times did, and a lot of my professors skip over a ton of stuff to fit within a standard US semester.
In terms of the finer arts, I've had the benefit of being at it since I was eight, and being in proximity to one of the best art colleges in that part of the world means I had amazing teachers (and know their value full well). You won't get that unless you make this your life and absolutely put in your best effort, and you're in it for the degree anyway - so I'd advise majoring in something that's a) you can see yourself doing and b) will net you a ton of money. Course, if you have the wherewithal, you'll make mad dosh whichever field you get into.

So start small, like simple applications that process text. Like, what different words are in this document, and how many times? Now, how many of those words are typos? Most of the people out there doing software are working on some utility application or another. For example, an application that analyzes your CV; matches it with existing educations, qualifications, certificates and so on; and then based on that analysis suggest what other job you can take or what additional certificates or courses do you need to qualify for another job. All of that has to be designed (not just visually, but the whole architecture of the application - from how the data is stored to how it's analyzed and against what, while keeping in mind that this has to be both fast and able to handle multiple users at the same time), coded, tested, etc etc.
When I was working on some imaging software (as in, X-Ray images) we needed a proper way to edit raw data directly from the X-Ray, store it on a remote server, and encode it with additional information and graphics that would allow the future doctors or whoever uses the app to immediately see what needs to be done or what the history of the patient is. So not only did you need to communicate with your hardware (both the X-Ray and the graphic card, since we're talking 100+ MB pics here) you needed to encode it with additional data (the doctor's opinion, history of the patient, all that noise), then store it on a remote machine while taking into account available resources, bandwidth etc. Shit was fun.
Because of what I learned there, I started developing my own engine in OpenGL and C++. The idea was to create a 3D fractal generator, because I could, and then make it dance on user input - after that, it would dance based on sound input from mp3… I should probably get back to that shit someday, stuff was fun.
