Sounds like it's decent if I haven't played Gothic 2 and can ignore the combat. Shame that the game doesn't look nearly as cool as it does in the screenshots.

I gave it a good six hours or so and didn't like it. Poor action mechanics which were just put in there because the even clunkier shit they probably are more used to wouldn't cut it. World feels very artificial, very green zone, blue zone with quests feeling like they're just there for the player to do. You're meant to prove yourself so people will trust you so they have the complete stranger do your usual collect 5 of this but you also do more important work that no one would ever send this suspicious person to do. Then there is the more forgivable stuff like poor voice acting and animation.

It was the definition of 'ok I suppose'. Some good ideas but a lot of meh execution, stamina shit was a pain in the ass and getting stunned by hits was a pisser, the fighting is pretty shit and trying to kill anything big above your level is turgid attrition until you get the flamethrower/psi thrower and then it becomes boring cos it's so easy.

There's also an exploit where energy cells can upgraded for nothing so you can make infinite money which leads to abusing 'Cold' potions which dump XP on you which in turn bottlenecks the ending.

I think it's on par if not better than Gothic 2. At first I thought Gothic 2 is better but when I forget about nostalgia I remember that I only like Khorinis and I fucking hate Valley of the Mines (or whatever it's called in English, I don't know) and it stops me from replaying it. Here are main points where these games differ in my opinion

Elex has better combat system

But on the other hand it feels more clunky than the one in G2, you will often wave your sword in the air because your character won't turn the way you want him to.

Gothic 2 has better characters

It's like with San Andreas and GTA 4. I remember everyone from SA but can't name anyone from 4, they were some generic italians mafiosos. Same thing with Elex, not as bad as GTA4, but still no really memorable characters.

Elex has a better story

It isn't Uchikoshi story tier by any means, but the whole Alb elex-junkies with no emotions thing and Jax trying to be more human is more interesting than "hey there is a bad dragon and you should slay it" in G2.

Elex has better world

It's big but it's not some repetitive shit like in bethesda games and you have a jetpack so you can get somewhere high easier, and you can jump from mountains instead of trying to get down on foot for five minutes.

But on the other hand there isn't much point in exploring it because you get fucking mugs and forks in reward for exploring it. Seriously, you open a level 3 chest and there is a candy bar inside. What the fuck. On the other hand the world in Elex is not as dark as in G2 so that depends what do you prefer.

The worst thing in elex:

HUMAN ENEMIES DON'T DROP WEAPONS

There is no point in trying to defeat some badass because you will just get 100exp and some trash from his body as a reward.

Some tips:

Everything will kill you at the beginning, don't try to fight, monsters give almost no exp anyway, do quests instead, run and fly and you will manage to finish a lot of them without fighting

Do not sell pure elex, do not use small elex potions. You can buy a recipe that will let you make a normal elex potion from two small elex potions or 4 pure elex. Normal potion gives you 2 attributes points. You get 10 on every level up but after 30 points in e.g. strength next point costs 2 attribute points. After 60 I think one point costs 5 fucking attribute points so you will need those potions. Drinking them gives you "cold" which probably influences the story but I don't care because I just want to fuck things up. At level 20 I could destroy every enemy. Oh and stats don't make you stronger, you need them only to unlock skills and be able to equip weapons so don't pump up anything more than you need.

Don't buy factionless armor, you can find an armor that gives you 13 defense for free, it's in a chest in some hunter's house, south-east of the first region if I remember good. Best factionless armor has 14 defense so there is not point in buying it if you can find that 13 def one.

Spend money on pure elex. Doctor in that desert town sells it, barman in the same town sells alcohol, so it's a good place to make potions.

Try to save 30000 elex to be able to buy the best faction armor. I spent too much on pure elex and can't buy it now even though I could equip it now.

I have finished the first chapter today. Got maxed cleric 2h weapon, did almost all side quests so there is only main story left for me since from what I read there are no new side quests in next chapters.

I'll give you every other point since they're subjective but Gothic 2 has a very solid and deliberate combat system. If you 'wave your sword in the air' it's because you hit the forward attack key at the same time as moving forward. Simply don't (unless you want to), porblem solved

I'm playing Gothic 2 right now and you're full of shit. Gothic 2 is far better than ELEX in literally every regard. ELEX is somewhere under Gothic 3 but above Risen 2, if we're doing comparisons. Here's why:

Could be okay, but isn't because of absolutely retarded balance. The mechanics behind it are worse than in the Gothic series, but not by that much. The real issue is that it's trivial to break in seemingly infinite ways. Really, play long enough, and you're almost guaranteed to get ridiculously OP one way or another. So while on game start, you're faced with sponges that aren't difficult but take a fucking eternity to kill, in mid-game, you'll already be killing the toughest enemies in the game in three strikes.

>setting

Basically a lot of total bullshit whose sole purpose is to convince you that having magical vikings, sci-fi laser dudes, and mad max all in one game somehow makes sense. It works as long as you do not think too long (over 10 seconds) about it.

I'll be honest, that shit was so disconnected and unremarkable that I don't remember it at all. Something about protag getting expelled from the designated villain faction and making his way back or whatever.

>map design

Piranha bytes finally realised that one of the things everyone loved about Gothic was the great map design, so they try to replicate that in ELEX. You will find something interesting every 10 steps and you'll always have some place to explore. Sadly, they forgot to actually provide actual REWARDS for exploration, so all you'll get for finding that secret cave with 3 strong trolls and a big throne will be some shitty generic loot. It's really disappointing because the actual map design isn't half bad.

Basically none. You'll be swimming in money in no time, and crafting is ridiculously broken in all its aspects.

Pretty good, actually. Many quests give you alternate ways to finish them and a lot of quests are quite interesting and fun to do.

I found the game to be okay. It was fun enough to make me enjoy the time playing it, but it's not a game I'll likely ever replay or recommend people to play. If you have nothing else to play, ELEX is not a bad pick.

Garbage animations, garbage combat where you are forced to level up a certain skill to defeat your enemy, the combat is absolutely horrible. The hit detection, the sound, and animation don't have good impact. The game's aesthetic is nice and the world is also well made with somewhat alright choices. I haven't seen the consequences yet because I haven't really made it that far into the game, I stopped playing and never bothered again.

Better than the amp for utility. It's another stunlocker weapon as I recall, keeps mongos at a distance at bay/off balance, best used in conjunction with the FF on big shit.

I wanted to like it but it has absolutely no pacing when it comes to skill checks and enemies.

Though I kind of like that with enemies since it gives the feeling that there's no safe zone and you can accidentally come across something that'll ruin your day.

Last boss was shit because it's the worst kind of boss - the type that has endless wave of goons to help him.

Game was all right, I just hope they will make the exploration more worthwhile in the sequel and that they bring back weapon drops from enemies.

I think it's good, possibly their fourth or second best game depending on how much you liked Gothic 1 and Risen 1. Risen 1 became a massive slog later on and was quite generic so I believe that it's their third best game, because Gothic 1 still has a lot of historical value on how it basically made the first open world action RPG.

The combat system is pretty much ridiculous (stamina lmao) and fighting shit is mostly a chore.

The only reason to play it is for the story, or to be more precise, exploring the world and finding the story. It's not really layed on you with cutscenes (if you're lazy, you'll get half-truths and straight up lies from people trying to manipulate you).

The ending was pretty interesting but since you can get ridiculously powerfull, the final Boss is a joke.

Speaking of which:

They patched out the first (it was a dumb exploit) and the second point isn't really needed. Even if you don't take Elex potions to gain more stats, you get enough points to get strong. Using potions just means you can end up with a lot more skills. Which is pretty great: it's good for a first playthrough, where you experiment with every part of the game and then you don't take them for a challenge run next time.

One bit of advice: there's "magic" in this game. The Clerics have their Psy shit and the Vikangs have actual magic. Besides warning you that one of the Psy throwers is more for utility than damage (and it can be rather usefull), the thing about Magic is that you either invest massively into it, or it's not usefull at all. You do shit damage with shit stats. Buff yourself up and you can actually kill things by looking at them. Biggest problem? Late game, your swords/guns outshine the magic anyway. Takes longer to get there since guns/swords need upgrades and "mods" to power up, besides your stats. And you only get those upgrades by diverting some of your stat gains into crafting. By by endgame, these weapons will end up outshining magic.

You can do the meme-stun thing most people do when playing it. Plasma gun / flamethrower /psy thrower can stun enemies over and over again, so in practice you can kill anything with them. But it takes a fuckload of time when you're low-level and the rewards aren't worth it.

My personal advice: avoid combat, talk to NPC's, there's a fuckload of quests that don't require combat. Do as many of those as you can. Don't join a faction until you're forced to, go to another town and do their quests (while avoiding combat until you're there).

Talk to everyone, explore all the possible things you can do. After you visited the 3 main cities, pick a side, dump the mountain of cash and XP you have and become death incarnate.

Semi-spoiler tip: there's a "neutral" town where people from all 3 factions live. Be very carefull about the choices you make in there. And don't go in there unless you're ready for it, the moment you set your foot on the door, the game starts a timer. You have a set amount of time to do their quests and make your choices (don't worry, it's a long timer) but after it elapses, shit goes of the rails.

Morrowind was less janky than this pile of garbage that I will probably still play eventually
