In conventional terms, yeah that's true. But the makings of a good officer aren't qualities that are easily listed on a resume. You have to avoid the mistake of only looking at what is easily seen, and missing what is hard to see.

So, what makes the best officers? My guess: Good character, fast learner, and you have to have the ability to cultivate the human potential and unity of everyone under your command. I think I'm good at those.

My degrees will have some value in the my MOS too (MOS is your "branch specialty"), even if they have more value as a civilian. And my goal in life isn't to accumulate money (everything I enjoy is basically free), which is why I consider this a serious "two roads diverged in a wood" situation. I think about it nearly every day.

This is a serious argument I've considered. Like, if I'm modeling the probabilities then odds are admittedly greater that I could help my country's military more by doing R&D or civilian intelligence. Even more indirectly, I could make money at hedge funds or live a life teaching thousands of university students. This boosts the country's economy and talent pool, both of which increase the future security of the United States.

The counter argument that my mind then presents to itself is this: While this is all true, it is just a probability model and not a matter of certainty. For example, it's also possible that I'm only average/above average at all those things, and not outstanding at them. There are odds I could become an outstanding officer, in which case it would have been a mistake not to taken that path.

Right now I have my entire life to try both options, observe the outcomes, and then stick to whatever path that I'm best at. But the devil is in the enlistment deadlines. I either have to 1. commit to trying the Army option before my enlistment window closes (and given enough time in the Army I'll know whether I'm serving my country best there or if I would be better on the outside), or 2. roll the dice and not enlist. Even if the dice are in my favor, it's a risk.
