Just picked up last week after not having played it for 5 years.
Some of the changes are stuff I liked (horses, vibrant oceans, boats don't split into a billion pieces if a squid farts on them, buried treasure/ maps), but they also added a lot of shit that is really aggravating (fucked up hunger/ health recovery, parrots are basically worthless other than for vanity, FUCKING DROWNED TRIDENTS, shields make the game ridiculously easy, especially when paired with wolves). Your best bet is just to play it and, then download some mods to add shit you like or get rid of shit you hate. I've heard the final area has some cool new stuff, but I haven't gotten then yet.
Not gonna lie though, probably will kill myself if Steve is in smash. Or at least not get the game.

Microsoft really just wanted the brand because this is extremely out of touch outside a branding cashgrab.
Minecraft was popular because it was a sandbox game with simple mechanics but with some decent depth where people created their own experiences and an easy 20 dollar purchase with no DRM/Account bullshit around it.
