**Is it just me or something but lately I've been digging a lot in my mind and from what I can recall I've always been a niche magnet of some kind. The book I read about investing in silver and gold explained how our monetary system worked.
So historically the USD was backed by gold, the "gold standard". What fucked it up in the 20s and post-WW2 was a cancer called fractional reserve banking. The reason it came into existence was that the Federal Reserve - a private corporation who has never been audited - is allowed to create as much money as they want. Inflation is nasty against small economies and just as bad against large ones, though it's more subtle in that case.
Every dollar you print steals value from every other dollar. And that makes sense. If you have one pizza, but cut it into two, everyone gets two big slices. If you cut it into 100 slices, everyone gets a little bit of that delicious cheesy value. The problem is that they're selling pizza that doesn't exist.
The way fractional reserve banking works is that you have 40% of that currency backed by actual gold. So if the FED has $1,000 of gold, they can issue $2,500 worth of loans and debt. This in turn goes to the banks who can do the same thing, but with only 10% backage. Thus, that $2,500 suddenly turns into $25,000 of loanable money. So they're loaning out pizza that doesn't even exist, they made a pizza party and advertised 25 pizzas but they only have one.
It gets worse. You're hungry and want a slice of pizza. So the bank issues you a loan. You put down your assets as collateral and you get your $1,000 pizza. There is now $26,000 in the pizza economy. You pay your $1,000 loan back. There is still $26,000 in the economy. Because of what you did, everyone just lost 4% of their own pizza.
This is a very simplified example of what causes inflation and how the banks continue to profit from it. When everyone gets hungry and calls the party shitty because they wanted pizza and raid the table, the USD comes crashing down and the price gets adjusted - suddenly all the money becomes worthless against the price of gold and silver, or gets replaced by a new currency that IS accurately valued.

Consider: because no large international country is gold-backed, and they're all fiat currencies, how do they determine relative wealth? Based on the USD. If you get a bunch of countries that decide, no, they don't want to take the USD they earned from selling exports and reinvest it into bonds, then it'll fuck it up even more (hint: this is likely what Trump referred to when he called China a currency manipulator: they keep their dollar artificially low by not re-circulating the USD they get from trading).
Anyways, since everything is relative to USD, when a crash comes, it's good to have something physical of value.
