I'd be a lot more annoyed by this if it wasn't for the fact that they're literally swimming in these sort of artifacts. Go to any archeological dig-site and you'll have a fit at just how many "precious artifacts" are discarded and/or outright destroyed because, despite what movies and TV tell you, not every tiny chip of pottery or rusted, bent piece of metal cutlery has value. 99% of the time just knowing that a certain item was found in an area has more historical value than the item itself. There's very little, if any, actual useful information you can harvest from the same style and type of coin or arrow head you've found 10,000 times previously.

You could argue that these items still hold worth as display pieces, but even then you're better off taking your absolute best-condition pieces, casting replicas from them, and putting those on display to the general public (as many museums across the world do) instead of taking literally any old busted up piece of iron and slapping it into a case. Even selling them to private individuals is more trouble than it's worth, because it both threatens devaluing existing pieces (which is a scummy reason, but it's one museums use) and it risks putting incredibly useful resources in the hands of forgers (who can use them as reference models or to produce forgeries with period-accurate metals).

Does it suck that this is happening? Yeah, but it's nothing to get bent of out shape over. When they start burning one-of-a-kind undocumented texts, then you have something that might actually have some cultural impact.
