Tiki is a mythological figure recurring in several Polynesian cultures :^)
According to the Maori he was the first man, but he has also been described as the first man who died a natural death back when humans were still immortal :^)

In the 50s, Polynesian art and culture gained a lot of popularity in the USA, and a lot of Polynesia-inspired kitsch was made.
This was called "Tiki culture", named after the legendary figure Tiki. :^)

The figures in your picture are technically not Tikis. They are Moai statues from Rapa Nui (Easter Island).
The Rapa Nui built them to honor their ancestors, and went through tremendous lengths to construct and erect these statues.
At some point, every tree in Rapa Nui was cut down, merely to transport and erect these giant Moai statues.
Birds would stop going to the island because of that, and the Rapa Nui did not have any wood to make canoes and go fishing.

hate is thrown around too much as a definition for a reaction

"distaste" is more adequate in everyday conversation, since you can't argue taste without coming off as a weenie

I have a distaste for anchovies and a mild distaste for bacon bits, even though I love bacon

Sliced ham, on the other hand, has to be of a certain thickness in order to blend in with the flavor of most pizza cheeses, and pineapple chunks should be small enough to be caramelized on the edges

I like my hawaiian pizza with sliced mushrooms on it, although most americans don't

You can only find so many good people out there.

It's more about fitting in with who you can really relate to, as opposed to fitting in with people who have nothing in common with you whose approval you're chasing.

More to the point, you should really relax with online communities. I used to be some sort of popular figure on a chan board last year, and it brought me absolutely nothing aside from thinking that I was getting validated by having a say in arguments. It's disposable.

You have to find your own place in a group, especially if you're "in charge", like realizing that internet groups aren't to be taken seriously, in the long run (unless you're making money off of them, in which case, you treat it like a job)

All in all, relax dood. Life is hard enough before you start making problems for yourself.
You can do what we did back in the day on our internet circlejerk and sell modship to someone within the inner circle for 100bux.

Everyone is welcome here, mahu :^)

but yes, Aboriginal culture (as much as it fascinates me) is technically not tiki culture.
Tiki culture is Polynesian, and sometimes includes Micronesian and Melanesian.
Fijians for example have both been called Polynesian and Melanesian :^)

Maori are Polynesian, they'd fit in.

You Australian mahu are lucky with your warm winters though.
Where I am, the winters are cold and lonely.
Christmas just seems like a (futile) distraction from the depressing, lurid cold.

Pacific horror stories, you say?
Funny you mention Fiji :^)

Fiji is an island rather isolated from the other pacific islands. It was so far away that the first people that sailed to this island ran out of food on their boat, and had to resort to cannibalism. :^)

Once they bumped into the island they noticed that there was no source of red meat anywhere, so their cannibalism continued.

Because humans tend to be more sympathetic to their own species than animals, a human would need to dehumanize another human if he would want to eat them. Cannibalism always has to have rituals to dehumanize the victim. It's also why the victims were often referred to as "long pig" (puaka balava) or "big fish" (ikalevu)

When people think of cannibalism they think of a cartoonish image of a missionary being out in a boiling pot with some vegetables, but it's far, FAR, more atrocious and disturbing than that :^)

One ritual was tying up a victim to a pole, and putting a fishhook through their tongue. They would then pull the tongue forward and cut it off, so they knew they cut off the entire tongue.
The tongue was then grilled on a fire and eaten in front of the victim, while his tormentors mocked and humiliated him. :^)

Then, they would tear off one of his arms, grill it, and eat it in front of him, in the same fashion.

I'm pretty sure war-prisoners, criminals, people who have broken taboos, etc. etc. had a priority, but punishment was not the main motive.
There was just this sadist kick that Fijians got out of cannibalism that is difficult to understand in today's context.

They would even casually chew on raw pieces of human skin or human ears as chewing tobacco. :^)

Festivals always were good reasons to eat lots of people. Whenever a canoe was built there was one.
Although, the festival about a chieftain's canoe being finished was infinitely more spectacular and gruesome than when a regular guy's canoe was finished.

According to traveler Alfred St. Johnston a man had to be slain for the laying of its keel, a fresh man was killed for every new timber that was added, more dead men were used as rollers to aid its passage to the sea, and then fresh men were killed to wash the canoe with blood. :^)

I think Fijians were somewhat on the same level as Aztecs when it comes to gruesomeness, although the Aztecs seemed to hold more of a religious motive behind it. (^:

It somewhat reminds me of the stuff that went on in Auschwitz and Soviet Gulags personally. :^)
