I'm interested in IRC/SSH text-only communication.with minimal configuration.
Are there any actually usable projects for this?
A few months ago, I saw a link here with a decent looking website, but I can't find it again.
Longest possible range is the priority, I don't care about bandwidth.
What is the best technology to accomplish this with?

There are ways to do this over High Frequency radio but you'd need an amateur radio license.
