Ataku dokonał Wladislaw Rosliakow, osiemnastoletni uczeń czwartej klasy technikum.
Kiedy Rosliakow miał ok. 10 lat, jego rodzice rozwiedli się. Jakiś czas wcześniej jego ojciec doznał ciężkiego urazu głowy, przez co stał się niepełnosprawny, a ponadto agresywny wobec Rosliakowa, jego matki i innych krewnych.
Miał niewielu przyjaciół, a jego hobby obejmowało broń i gry wideo. Technikum zaczął w roku 2015, kształcił się na elektryka. Uczył się bez zainteresowania, miał słabe oceny. W szkole rozwinął swoje zainteresowanie materiałami wybuchowymi. Znajomi powiedzieli, że nienawidził szkoły i planował zemstę.
Według byłej dziewczyny, Rosliakow powiedział, że stracił zaufanie do ludzi, gdy jego koledzy z klasy zaczęli go wyśmiewać, ponieważ różnił się od nich. W dniach poprzedzających atak w mediach społecznościowych mówił o braku sensu w życiu, samobójstwie oraz możliwej strzelaninie.
8 października Rosliakow kupił broń. Był to Hatsan Escort Aimguard 12-gauge pump-action shotgun – taktyczna powtarzalna strzelba gładkolufowa. 13 października zakupił około 150 sztuk amunicji.
17 października około godziny 11:46 sprawca, ubrany w białą koszulkę z czarnym napisem NIENAWIŚĆ, wszedł na teren szkoły, a wkrótce potem zaczął strzelać. Świadek twierdzi, że trwało to ponad 15 minut.
Na stołówce wybuchła duża bomba wypełniona metalowymi odłamkami (gwoździami). Miejscowa policja ujawniła, że na terenie kampusu dezaktywowano więcej materiałów wybuchowych.
Kilkoro świadków opisało, że Rosliakow chodził po schodach z jednego piętra na drugie, strzelając do przypadkowych uczniów i nauczycieli dotąd, aż zabrakło mu amunicji. Inni opisywali pękające od wybuchu okna oraz sprawcę strzelającego do uciekających. Donoszono również o wybuchach granatów.
Na stronie internetowej miasta podano, że wybuch nastąpił na pierwszym piętrze, a do strzelaniny doszło na drugim. Kanał Russia-24 podał, iż na miejsce zdarzenia wysłano 200 osób z kadry wojskowej.
Według najnowszych danych, liczba osób zabitych przez sprawcę wynosi 20. 60 osób zostało rannych, 10 z nich przebywa na oddziałach intensywnej terapii, a 3 są w śpiączce.
Sprawca strzałem w podniebienie popełnił samobójstwo. Jego ciało zostało znalezione w bibliotece.
