Alright, I'm a complete newb when it comes to DIY. I wanted to build 2 small bookcases to use as a left and right leg for a desk.

I wanted to have the shelves be removable (in case I wanted to store something bigger in the case).

I wanted to nail or screw a strip of wood to the inside of the left/right side of the bookcase (see pic for small demo). The idea is to put the shelves on top of those strips without any other method of supporting them (no other nails, screws or glue).

That way, I could slide in/out the shelves. Would this be sufficient to hold a few books? The shelve would only be 15-16 inches long and 11 inches deep.

As an additional question, would it be fine if I glue everything else together without using nails or screws? Ie. glue the side panels to the back panel and then glue those 3 to a bottom panel and a top panel.

I work at a library, and I've installed shelving exactly the way you mentioned. It will work fine for decades. 36" shelves 28" deep loaded with 140lb of crap hold just fine with wooden cleats.

If you prep right, and have nice flat, clean surfaces, glue works great. If you're a lazy, worthless george floyd who gets chicken fat on everything and can't make a decent straight cut to save your life, you're fucked.

Making straight cuts with hand tools is hard. Op needs to decide his maximum tolerances before he begins cutting or he might be off by 1/5 inch here and there causing his final design to be lopsided or offset by 12/17 of an inch and preventing any precision gluing from taking hold.

tldr: Use nails. Lots of them.

The wood in your picture has significant levels of formaldehyde emissions so be sure to air out your shelves for six months before using.

Your proposed method of making shelves is generally considered a normal method but the boards you are using for the sides will warp and buckle quickly.
