I burn myself. Not because i'm depressed, but because I need a release. I'm a recovering junkie with 2 years of sobriety, I used to slam heroin and meth whenever I needed to take my mind off things. Now that i'm clean, I don't have that kind of coping mechanism to depend on. So whenever I get uncomfortably stressed, I take my bic lighter, heat up my car key, and then proceed to burn the back of my hands with the searing hot metal.

I do it for the same reasons, except I am depressed and extremely anxious all the time. The benzos can stop the anxiety but not crippling depression. I still have a scar from a cigarette, but mostly cuts. >>14599

Is it really self harm if you're just showing off how tough you (think you) are? I mean, I used to stub out cigars in the palm of my hand in public to intimidate people.
