Let's say you want to kill many people, you want widespread panic, but you don't want to destroy the infrastructure.
Nukes are out - too much damage, chemicals are out - too hard to disperse widely and easy to protect against. That leaves biological weapons and the best is a virus.
You come up with a list of requirements:
- It must be easy to create
- It must be possible to create a vaccine for it
- It must spread quickly
- It must have a high death rate
There are the nice-to-haves
- It should spread for days before symptoms appear
- It is most deadly to the weakest of the herd
- It should be easy to manipulate
- People vaccinated for other viruses, like influenza, should be more susceptible to the new virus
Coronavirus, with a little help, could do all of these things. You tweak the Coronavirus and come up with SARS-COV. It's extremely deadly but it does not spread quickly. You try again, but it still does not do the job - but you learn.
You find that bats carry a form of coronavirus that spreads rapidly. You combine bat and SARS. In vitro testing shows you have done it. You have your killer plague. You prime the news media, you prime the WHO, you pick the release spot, and you even get some people to carry it to other countries.
You are all set and you release the plague. The initial results look promising. Since this is occurring in China, you manipulate the narrative, ensuring confusion, panic, and indecision. You then send your people around the world.
Something weird happens: people aren’t dying fast enough, the infection isn’t spreading fast enough, and countries are locking down too fast. Even worse, Trump reports to the world that chloroquine-based drugs are effective.
How did Trump know? How did doctors find out that Hydroxychloroquine is a cure? How are these drugs so very effective? How did the plan fail?
Doing genetic research, you find that while the virus has the right proportions of DNA (bat-SARS) it has the wrong genes. It has all of the weaknesses of SARS and not as much of its strengths. Worse, the proteins are optimized to attract chloroquine-drugs. You now know that your genetic engineering was itself engineered. Your plans crumble, and panic sets in.
