Veteran chickenhawk Lindsey Graham once again beat his over-used war drum, this time because he wants NATO to get involved in Idlib, Syria to stop “Syrian aggression.” Yes, when will Syria stop intervening in its own country?

The South Carolina senator said that he fully supports US President Donald Trump’s efforts to “get NATO more involved in Syria,” arguing that the defensive alliance should aid Turkey as it “defends Idlib against Russian/Syrian aggression.” He further argued that the “fall” of Idlib would result in a humanitarian crisis felt around the world, which is why NATO should be more “supportive” of its Turkish ally.

The senior statesman apparently doesn’t seem particularly fazed by the fact that Idlib is part of Syria – making accusations of “Syrian aggression” slightly nonsensical. The province is now home to the last bastion of extremist jihadist militias, some of which are directly affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

This is hardly the first time that the US hawk has demanded direct intervention in Idlib. In February, he called on the Pentagon to impose a no-fly zone over the Syrian province, claiming it would help stop the “destruction” of Idlib by Syrian, Iranian, and Russian forces.

As far back as September, Graham was issuing statements warning over “the wholesale massacre” of civilians in Idlib, insisting that “we either act now [in Syria] or pay a heavy price later.”

The senator’s melodramatic representation of a terrorist-infested Syrian province being under siege by the Syrian military shouldn’t come as a surprise to US political observers. Graham has been portrayed as part of former Arizona Senator John McCain’s “foreign policy club” – a euphemism for hardcore neocon interventionism.

Cop Charged for Refusing to Investigate Dozens of Child Sex Crimes, Gets Off With $300 Fine

Horry County, SC — Those who frequent the Free Thought Project know that cops are charged on a regular basis with sexual misconduct. Many of these cases involve the exploitation of children and most of those cases resolve with the officers doing little to no time in jail. In short, the system appears to protect child rapists or give them special privilege if they are cops.

One of these cops who is part of the system that facilitates the exploitation of children is retired Horry County police officer Todd Cox. Cox was staring down potential decades behind bars for refusing to investigate dozens of sex crimes against children as well as other crimes. However, likely due to his connected status, on Monday, this facilitator of child rape was sentenced to a year in jail and a $300 fine — with the year in jail suspended.

Showing that this special privilege is not some isolated incident is the fact that three other Horry County police officers – Luke Green, Allen Large and Darryl Williams – were indicted in September 2016 along with Cox on dozens of charges of misconduct in office. However, Green’s record was expunged after he entered a pre-trial diversion program, Large died before facing any consequences, and Williams is still fighting for a sweetheart deal.

Cox’s sentence is incredibly insulting given the sheer amount of criminal acts against children he was charged with ignoring.

According to Myrtle Beach Online, investigators say that Cox failed to investigate dozens of cases while serving as a detective with Horry County police. The indictments detail a lengthy list of misconduct. They allege that Cox did the following:

Indictment 1: Failed to investigate 18 cases.

Indictment 2: Unassigned himself from a criminal sexual conduct case.

Indictment 3: Unassigned himself from a criminal sexual conduct case.

Indictment 4: Unassigned himself from a criminal sexual conduct case.

Indictment 5: Unassigned himself from a criminal sexual conduct case.

Indictment 6: He closed an attempted murder case without investigating.

Indictment 7: Unassigned himself from a child abuse case.

Indictment 8: Unassigned himself from a shooting into a home case.

Indictment 9: Unassigned himself from an overdose case.

Indictment 10: He closed a cruelty to children case without investigating.

Indictment 11: He closed a kidnapping case without investigating.

Indictment 12: He closed a criminal sexual conduct case without investigating.

Indictment 13: He closed a sexual exploitation of a minor without investigating.

Indictment 14: He closed an armed robbery case without investigating.

Indictment 15: He closed a lynching case without investigating.

Indictment 16: He closed a criminal sexual conduct case without investigating.

According to the report, the three other officers who were charged with Cox were also involved in this scandal. Instead of taking responsibility for her officers’ actions when they were charged, then-Horry police chief Saundra Rhodes abruptly retired.

As MBO reports, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated the cases against the four officers. The unit uncovered allegations of Large coercing women for sex and inappropriate relationships with victims. Large also discussed participating in nude catfighting videos with some of the victims he was supposed to be helping.

Naturally, Cox’s police union-appointed attorney was ecstatic that his client — who ignored serious crimes against children — got off with less than a slap on the wrist.

“Todd is glad to have this behind him,” his attorney Morgan Martin said. “He dedicated 22 years of tireless service to the community and we feel that a small fine as assessed by the court is a proper resolution.”

WASHINGTON — A federal judge has ordered that an independent medical panel conduct a review of the mental health of a Saudi prisoner at the Guantanamo Bay detention center who has been accused of trying to enter the U.S. to be the 20th hijacker in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Mohammed al-Qahtani has been held at Guantanamo for 18 years but never charged because a Pentagon legal official determined he had been tortured at the U.S. base in Cuba.

Lawyers for al-Qahtani say he has suffered from mental illness, including schizophrenia, since childhood and should be returned home to Saudi Arabia for psychiatric confinement and treatment. The government opposes repatriation and says he can be treated at Guantanamo.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer directed the government to set up a Mixed Medical Commission. It would consist of an American military doctor along with two physicians from a neutral third country to determine if his condition meets the standard for required medical repatriation according to Army regulations governing the treatment of prisoners of war under the Geneva Conventions.

It would be the first time such a commission has been ordered at Guantanamo but Shayana Kadidal, an attorney for the 45-year-old prisoner, said a similar process was used for thousands of captured German troops during World War II.

“It is something that is part of the traditional make up of military detention,” Kadidal said. “It’s not something novel. It’s in the Army’s own regs.”

A recent interview has unraveled new details in the mysterious death of a whistleblower that has yet to be discussed by mainstream media.

Philip Haney, the whistleblower against the Obama administration, was found dead on February 21 with a single gun shot wound near a California highway. Investigators have said the scene appeared to look like a suicide.

In an interview on Friday, however, Haney’s pastor suggested his death might have been a murder rather than a suicide.

“No I do not believe he was suicidal, I do not believe that,” said Pastor Grey Young. “…You have a man that was planning to get married, a man who was very devout in his Christian faith, a man who had a lot of incredible projects in the works.”

Young went on to recount his last conversation with Haney before his death, which led him to believe Haney was excited about his future.

“Our last message together basically was ‘hey. I can’t wait to share with you this incredible thing that’s happened’ and he was very excited about it,” he stated.

Young often referenced Haney’s excitement for his book titled: “See Something, Say Nothing — A Homeland Security Officer Exposes the Government’s Submission to Jihad.”

The book was set up as an interview about Haney’s experience working for the Department of Homeland Security and allegedly preventing hundreds of potential terrorist threats.

More importantly, the book details Haney’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in which he claimed federal law enforcement showed “willful blindness” to Islamic attacks in America.

Days after Haney’s death, the Amador County Sheriff’s Office announced the case will likely be a lengthy investigation.

“The individual assessment by the deputies arriving on the scene and their supervisor is the start of the investigation, it is not the end,” stated county Coroner Martin Ryan. “And we have not made any conclusions as to the cause and manner of death.”

For now, details about the investigation into Haney’s death are limited, but the FBI is working with local authorities to determine an official cause of death.

Demanding More Cash, Erdogan Walks Out of EU Meeting Over Migrant Crisis

The Islamist leader of Turkey walked out of his meeting with European Union officials after the two sides failed to reach an agreement on the migrant crisis at the Greek border Monday night.

In a meeting in Brussels on Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan demanded that the EU send more financial support in return for halting the flow of migration into the bloc, claiming that the cost of housing an estimated 3.5 million migrants cost Turkey €40 billion.

The meeting between Mr Erdogan and the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, was cut short after just an hour and forty-five minutes after the two sides failed to reach an agreement, according to The Times.

The Turkish leader also called on the European Union to grant visa-free travel for Turkish citizens, as well as the EU taking in more refugees from the Middle East. Mr Erdogan accused the EU of failing to meet its obligations of the 2016 agreement that halted the flow of migration into the bloc in exchange for €6 billion in aid.

Acknowledging the failure of the meeting, Mrs von der Leyen said that the two sides could not agree on the terms of the agreement, saying: “The 2016 agreement remains valid and we need to implement missing elements. We have indicated to President Erdogan that we are willing to move forward as long as it is reciprocal.”

Mr Michel said that despite the failure of the meeting on Monday, talks will continue between the two sides “to work to clarify the implementation of the deal to be certain we are on the same page”

Medical air transport specialist Phoenix Air flew more than 1,100 American citizens out of Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, and stands ready for further missions should the need arise, company officials said.

The Cartersville, Georgia, aviation firm led by brothers Mark and Dent Thompson specializes in military training and communicable disease transportation, so its aviators and medical personnel were well-prepared for a communicable disease crisis half a world away.

Wuhan is “as big—or bigger than—New York City,” said Thompson. “It’s a giant industrial city and there are a lot of American factories set up there to make everything imaginable and they have a lot of American managers overseeing work. The U.S. government made a decision, from the President on down, to get Americans out.”

In mid-February, Boeing jetliners equipped with a Containerized Biocontainment System (CBCS) that Phoenix Air developed dashed to the scene as the confounding disease developed into a household word.

With the help of several U.S. federal agencies, medical professionals, and infectious disease experts, the company organized five Boeing 747 flights to airlift Americans and their families from the epicenter. “We ended up bringing out over 1,100 Americans and 100 Canadians” who were working in the region.

The evacuees were taken to March Air Reserve Base in California. Those who showed symptoms were isolated inside the aircraft during the flight and quarantined upon arrival. Thompson said the medical staff closely monitored the passengers prior to and during the flights.

“A week later there were hundreds of Americans caught on the Diamond Princess in Japan. Being stuck on a ship with 4,000 people is a lot harder to contain than if you were just in your apartment in a city,” he said.

The decision was again made to “bring out as many well people as possible.” The company sent two specially outfitted Kalitta Air 747s into Japan. “Fourteen showed indications of having the coronavirus, so the decision was made to isolate them from other passengers” on the aircraft, and they were then transferred to U.S. hospitals.

A 40-foot-long, 8-foot-wide, and 8-foot-tall room that weighs 25,000 pounds slides inside the nose of a transport jet and can accommodate four patients in isolation and six medical attendants. “Think of a CBCS as a self-contained system the size of a tractor trailer container,” explained Dent Thompson. “The only thing it will fit inside on the commercial side of aviation is a Boeing 747-400,” with 12 inches to spare between the containment device and the fuselage, which is loaded in from the aircraft’s hinged nose. On the military side, Boeing’s C–17 Globemaster and Lockheed Martin’s C–5 Galaxy also accommodate large packages with swinging noses.

The white containers are trucked from Cartersville 40 miles south to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta and maneuvered into a Kalitta Air Boeing 747-400 cargo aircraft operated under contract from Phoenix Air. Additional hardware and medical personnel are moved into place before deployment.

“This type of work is not something you put on a shelf and pull it out when there is a pandemic,” Thompson confided. Personnel drill on a regular basis for such emergencies. “These are very large-scale public exercises. We have to practice with our partners at the CDC, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,” and other government and safety entities. “We’ve been in a dress rehearsal for the coronavirus since 2017.”

Although he wasn’t authorized to release certain details, Thompson said the cargo containers “are the most sophisticated biocontainment system in the world.” All four devices are owned by the U.S. Department of State and operated under contract by Phoenix Air.

The containment equipment and procedures were originally developed at a smaller scale to transport Center for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Health and Human Services infectious disease experts to hot spots throughout the world via business jets—in case a researcher became symptomatic in the field.

Phoenix Air’s expertise was put in play during the Ebola epidemic because of the research the company put into pioneering the challenging transportation requirements. UK press acts as ‘appendage of the state’ when reporting on foreign policy, new analysis shows

A new analysis of British media’s coverage of foreign policy has found that, by and large, the UK press acts as “an appendage of the state” and has been “misinforming the public” and “failing to report” completely on key issues.

The statistical analysis was carried out by Declassified UK, a new “public service journalism” project investigating Britain’s foreign,military and intelligence policies and run by journalist and historian Mark Curtis.

What ‘rules based order’?

On Twitter, Curtis said the current state of UK press reporting on foreign policy is “shocking” and that the media was “systematically misinforming” the public on numerous issues, as well as routinely “falsely reporting” on the UK’s “supposed benevolent role” around the world.

Among its findings, Declassified UK said that the term “rules-based international order” has been used in 339 press articles over the past five years — and that Britain is invariably cast as an upholder of that order, despite being “as much a violator of international rules as any official enemy.”

Yemen, Syria and the OPCW

When it comes to the war in Yemen, the press has “overwhelmingly failed” to report the extent to which this is also a British war due to its key role in arming Saudi Arabia.

While many articles covered UK arms exports to Riyadh, “no articles could be found” mentioning the UK's role in storing and issuing bombs for Saudi aircraft and maintaining warplanes at key operating bases.

The UK media has also mostly “ignored” British military support programs in Saudi Arabia itself, showing a “lack of interest on the part of journalists to expose key aspects of UK foreign policy,” it said.

On the war in Syria, the Times and Telegraph have reported only “sporadically” on Britain's involvement in the conflict, while the Guardian has accused the UK of having “failed to act” in the war-torn country — despite the fact that Britain began covert operations in Syria as early as 2011.

Greek Government: Only Four Per Cent of ‘Refugees’ Breaching Border Are Syrian

Just four per cent of the supposed refugees who have breached the Greek border in recent days are Syrians, according to the Greek government.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Islamist president of Turkey, claimed he was opening his borders to Europe in response to the threat of a fresh wave of refugees from Syria — despite the fact his reason for invading the north of the country was, ostensibly, to carve out a safe zone for Syrian refugees to be settled in.

However, the Greek government reports that only a small minority of the migrants who have breached their border defences since Erdogan “opened the gates” are Syrian — and even then many are said to be people long-established in Turkey, not new migrants fleeing the fighting between Turkey, its jihadist rebel clients, and the Russian- and Iranian-backed Syrian government.

The vast majority of the migrants detained in Greece, the government claims, are actually Afghans, comprising 64 per cent of the total.

Migrants from Pakistan account for almost a fifth of detainees, at 19 per cent, with migrants from Turkey itself in third place, at 5 per cent.

Syrians are said to be in a distant fourth place, at just four per cent, followed by Somali migrants at 2.6 per cent, with migrants from countries across Asia and Africa including Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Morocco, Bangladesh, and Egypt accounting collectively for 5.4 per cent.

The Turkish government disputes the Greek government’s numbers, however, suggesting that well over a hundred thousand migrants have reached Europe, and not only a few hundred as the Greeks suggest.

Erdogan’s decision to “open the gates” to Europe is widely regarded as a form of punishment for European governments’ lack of sufficient report, as he sees it, for the Turkish invasion of Syria, and was taken after a number of Turkish soldiers were killed in an airstrike mounted by either the Syrian government or its Russian allies.

Greek prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has insisted that “Europe is not going to be blackmailed by Turkey” and that his government has “every right to protect our sovereign borders”, which is also part of the common external border of the European Union’s frontierless Schengen Area.

Officially, the European Union is backing Greece — although the rhetoric from some of the bloc’s more left-liberal members has not always been helpful, with the millennial feminist-led Finnish government having branded Greece’s decision to suspend asylum applications while the crisis is ongoing “wrong”.

Rep. Matt Gaetz was notified while he was abroad Air Force One that he had come in contact with a person who tested positive for coronavirus. The Florida Republican was exposed to the virus during his time at the Conservative Political Action Conference, as were GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona, and Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia. All four of them have closed their offices and are self-quarantining themselves despite not experiencing symptoms. Gaetz learned of the news after he had joined the president on Air Force One Monday after a campaign fundraiser. The congressman was then placed in a sequestered area of the plane and said he would de-board after everyone else, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“The physicians aboard AF1 were very clear with me that the risk that I transmitted this virus was very low,” Gaetz told the outlet. Additionally, a White House aide summoned Gaetz because the president wanted to see him. While the congressman didn't go into Trump's office aboard the plane, the president “used his good-heartedness and good humor to bring me some comfort and make sure I was fine," according to Gaetz. "He joked that maybe I needed to be wrapped in cellophane. I said that I volunteered several times to jump out of Air Force One without a parachute," he said.

Despite Trump's contact with both Gaetz on Air Force One and Collins at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Georgia last week, the president hasn't been tested for coronavirus. Vice President Mike Pence, who is heading up the coronavirus response, hasn't been tested either. Both attended CPAC as well. “The President has not received COVID-19 testing because he has neither had prolonged close contact with any known confirmed COVID-19 patients, nor does he have any symptoms,” White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement Monday. “President Trump remains in excellent health, and his physician will continue to closely monitor him.”

A pro-Israel Democratic super PAC has endorsed Joe Biden for president, underscoring growing antagonism towards Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders among Israel's advocates in the United States.

The endorsement by the Democratic Majority for Israel (DMFI) - which is linked to AIPAC - comes a day ahead of a crucial round of primaries, after Biden took the lead in what has become a two-candidate race for the Democratic nomination.

"As senator and vice president, Joe Biden has proven he will fight for Democrats' broad vision for America, including a strong US-Israeli relationship," DMFI president and founder Mark Mellman, who is a prominent AIPAC strategist, said in a statement on Monday.

Several Israeli and Republican officials had criticised Sanders for skipping the AIPAC conference in Washington earlier this month. The Vermont senator boycotted the event, accusing the pro-Israel organisation of providing a platform for "bigotry".

Biden delivered a video message to the conference in which he emphasised the importance of US-Israeli relations and talked up his pro-Israel credentials. But he also criticised Israel for settlement expansion.

He said it was "dangerous" for support to Israel to become a partisan issue between Democrats and Republicans.

"We can't let anything undermine the partnership that has grown and flourished from the moment of Israel's founding," Biden said in the video.

'Blind support for Israel'

DMFI ran ads attacking Sanders ahead of the early primary states in February, questioning the senator's health and electability without tackling his foreign policy ideas.

Sanders has vowed to condition aid to Israel in order to pressure it to end its abuses against Palestinians and ease the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, winning the support of many Palestinian groups and activists across the country.

Amer Zahr, a Palestinian-American activist and comedian who is a surrogate for Sanders' campaign, said it was not surprising that DMFI was backing Biden, who has been a "close friend of the pro-Israel lobby for decades".
