Barr says Mueller asked DOJ to send letter limiting testimony to ‘boundaries' of report

Attorney General Bill Barr told Fox News on Tuesday that it was former Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team who asked the Justice Department to send Mueller a letter telling him to keep his upcoming testimony to House lawmakers "within the boundaries" of the public version of his Russia probe report.

The letter provoked criticism from Democrats ahead of Wednesday’s highly anticipated hearing, with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler calling it “incredibly arrogant.” Asked by Fox News why the Monday letter was sent, Barr said Mueller’s staff asked the department for guidance ahead of the hearing.

“At his press conference, Bob had said that he intended to stick with the public report and not go beyond that,” Barr said in an interview. “And in conversations with the department, his staff was reiterating that that was their position and they asked us for guidance in writing to explain or to tell them [what] our position was. So we responded in writing. The department sent the guidance that they requested."

Asked directly if it was Mueller who asked for the letter, Barr replied, “Yes.”

The letter, obtained by Fox News on Monday, was signed by Associate Deputy Attorney General Bradley Weinsheimer.

The letter said, “Should you testify, the Department understands that testimony regarding the work of the Special Counsel's Office will be governed by the terms you outlined on May 29 -- specifically, that the information you discuss during your testimony appears in, and does ‘not go beyond,’ the public version of your March 22, 2019 report to the Attorney General or your May 29 public statement."

Speaking to Fox News, Barr also hit back at Nadler, who during a CNN interview Tuesday called the letter “incredibly arrogant” for trying to “instruct” Mueller what to say.

“He was misinformed as to the facts,” Barr said.

The attorney general also declined to comment on the Democratic-controlled House holding him and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in criminal contempt over questions having to do with the Trump administration’s proposed citizenship question to the 2020 census.

“Goes with the territory these days,” Barr said.

Conservatives erupt in outrage against budget deal

Conservatives are outraged about the $320 billion budget deal President Trump announced Monday, and they are not holding back.

Rep. Mark Walker (R-N.C.), a member of House leadership, tweeted out a gif of the Joker burning a giant pile of cash when the announcement came out.

“Our credit card is maxed out,” he wrote in a follow-up Tweet. “What this budget deal does is ask the credit card company for another $320 billion in credit NOW for the chance to get paid back $75 billion in a decade. No bank would take that. American taxpayers shouldn’t either,” he added.

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the House Freedom Caucus, on Monday penned a letter to Trump opposing the agreement and has since said he is “on board” with energizing conservatives to defeat the bill.

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a watchdog that advocates for lowering deficits, estimated that the deal would cost $1.7 trillion over a decade, and add another 5 percentage points to the debt by the end of the decade.

Since Trump took office, the debt has grown from just under $20 trillion to over $22 trillion. While mandatory spending remains the largest driver of deficits, the 2017 GOP tax law was projected to add $1.9 trillion to the deficit over a decade, and bipartisan deals to increase defense and domestic spending have added billions more.

"President Trump will have set the record for the largest increases in federal spending in the history of our country, surpassing George W. Bush's Republican record," said one member of the conservative Freedom Caucus.

The caucus is expected to meet Tuesday to discuss the deal. But its leaders, Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), both key Trump allies, have remained uncharacteristically quiet since the deal's announcement, focusing their recent fire on an upcoming hearing with former special counsel Robert Mueller.

Other conservatives have also been wary of criticizing Trump, who enthusiastically supported the deal in a tweet.

“President Trump has worked hard in his budget to restrain Congress’s unending desire to spend, but we can’t support this spending deal,” said David McIntosh, president of the Club for Growth.

McIntosh cast blame for the deal on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who was the lead negotiator with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) after Trump’s acting chief of staff, Freedom Caucus founder Mick Mulvaney, was sidelined.

“We also hope President Trump gives Secretary Mnuchin a copy of The Art of the Deal so that he will not be as weak and give in to liberal demands in future negotiations,” McIntosh said.

Other outside groups and influencers were less reticent about criticizing Trump.

Adam Brandon, the president of FreedomWorks, a conservative group, called the deal a “disgrace.”

Department of Commerce: Address Privacy Before Licensing Satellites to Watch Over Us

Satellites could soon track our movements from space, allowing for surveillance on a mass scale that most people haven’t ever contemplated. Yet U.S. rules governing commercial satellite licenses require satellite companies to disclose the unenhanced data they collect to governments around the world. This week, EFF filed comments with the Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) urging the agencies to take privacy into consideration when they issue satellite licenses.

U.S. companies and research institutions that want to launch private satellites must first obtain a license from the federal government. As satellites have become smaller and less expensive to launch, and as the market has increased for the images and other data collected by satellites, satellite companies have been pushing the government to streamline the licensing process. This spring, the Department of Commerce issued a proposed rule that is designed to do that and then requested comments from interested parties. Noticeably absent from this proposed rule are any new protections to address the clear privacy risks raised by satellite images and recordings and the existing rule’s data sharing requirement. EFF’s comment urges the Department of Commerce to address these concerns.

Private Satellites Pose Substantial Risks to Privacy and Civil Liberties

Satellites are capable of highly advanced and continuous surveillance through high resolution imaging, thermal imaging, and near real-time video, and their capabilities are increasing every day. Private satellites are currently allowed to create images of up to 25 centimeters of resolution, which is enough to discern something the size of a mailbox. Satellites can also conduct thermal imaging, hyperspectral imaging (which captures electromagnetic wavelengths outside the visible spectrum), and atmospheric monitoring. Technologies like these can be used to cut through cloud cover, to determine the height of objects, and even to “identify underground bunkers or nuclear materials.”

A single one of these satellites can orbit around the Earth revisiting and reimaging the same area every 90 minutes, and several satellite operators advertise an archive of images that dates back ten or nearly 20 years. These vast archived datasets---which include data on private citizens—allow anyone with access the ability to enter a virtual time machine and view and monitor past actions for as long and as far back as a satellite operator retains data.

Mueller makes last-minute ask to swear in deputy for hearing

(CNN) Special counsel Robert Mueller's deputy Aaron Zebley is expected appear next to the special counsel as his counsel at Wednesday's hearings on the special counsel's report, according to a House Judiciary committee source.

Zebley will be there to advise Mueller, but the special counsel will be the only one answering the committee questions, the source said. Democrats only plan to swear in Mueller as a witness.

Mueller made the last-minute request to have his deputy sworn in for Wednesday's blockbuster hearings before the Judiciary and Intelligence Committees on the Mueller report, in case he needed to help with any questions the special counsel could not fully answer himself, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Green Activists With Ties to China Advised Obama State Department

NRDC’s role in Paris Agreement revealed by FOIA emails

The Natural Resources Defense Council held close ties to the Obama administration, providing advice on joining the Paris Agreement while simultaneously maintaining ties to China, according to attorneys and policy analysts who have reviewed email records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

While many of the emails are heavily redacted, they provide insight into how the NRDC, a nonprofit environmental advocacy group, and its close associates in Beijing, sought to maneuver the United States into an international climate change accord that has all the "hallmarks of a treaty" without the "advice and consent" of the Senate, Bonner Cohen, a senior fellow with the National Center for Public Policy Research, explained in an interview.

The United Nations' Paris Agreement, which took shape in December 2015, figures prominently in emails between Jake Schmidt, the NRDC’s director of international programs, and several State Department officials including Todd Stern, who was a special envoy for climate change at the time of his correspondence with Schmidt in 2014 and 2015.

Cohen calls the agreement "an instrument to redistribute wealth, through higher energy prices, from middle- and lower-income people to well-heeled renewable-energy providers and investors in developed countries, while spreading some largesse to elites in poorer countries via the U.N.'s Green Climate Fund."

President Obama took executive action to have the United States become part of the international agreement in September 2016, which requires participating countries to establish their own "nationally determined contributions" toward what the U.N. describes as a "global response to the threat of climate change." The nationally determined contributions (NDCs) detail how much each country plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. In June 2017, President Trump announced during a White House ceremony that the United States would withdraw from the Paris Agreement. The president said the treaty was unfair to American workers and taxpayers.

Chris Horner, an attorney with Government Accountability and Oversight, a nonprofit, public interest law firm, said he would still like to see the White House submit the agreement to the Senate as a treaty in need of ratification.

Jeffrey Epstein hobnobbed with high-profile guests from the worlds of politics, banking, Hollywood and philanthropy at a Hamptons party just two months after his release by the state of Florida for soliciting a minor.

Photos from a 2010 dinner party at the home of David and Julia Koch obtained by DailyMail.com show Epstein as he chats with guests after a screening of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Among those guests were two men who currently serve in President Trump's cabinet and his most trusted legal adviser.

Steve Mnuchin and his then-wife Heather, Rudy Giuliani and his then-wife Judith and Wilbur Ross all attended the screening and dinner that followed at the Koch's.

The Wall Street Journal wrote about those who attended the event a few days later, and in the piece noted that Giuliani 'walked out of the theater around the same time as Jeffrey Epstein, leading one observer to remark on the "beautifully done meeting of the prosecutor and the felon."'

The party that night was also attended by designers Tory Burch and Tamara Mellon, billionaires Henry Kravis and Steve Schwarzman and publicist Peggy Siegal.

She has admitted to helping Epstein out, and in an interview with The New York Times said: 'I was a kind of plugged-in girl around town who knew a lot of people. And I think that's what he wanted from me, a kind of social goings-on about New York.'

Siegal also said in that interview that she was not paid by Epstein and he did not go to parties, choosing to skip them after screenings.

That was not the case at this party however, where he was seen in deep conversation with close friend Jonathan Farkas in one photo, and in another seemed to be standing next to one of his former female employees.

The Journal story asked guests about the criminal elements of the Wall Street sequel at the party, prompting one individual to note: 'You know, you have to be a little careful what you say and ask here, because there are a lot of guys in the room who spent some time in prison, too.'

Americans are losing trust in each other, in the government, and in the media, according to a concerning new survey.

Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that conducts public opinion polls and social science research and informs the public about issues, attitudes, and trends shaping the world. The organization recently published a new report called Trust and Distrust in America, which reveals that Americans think declining trust in the government and in each other is making it harder to solve important problems.

Confidence in the government and in each other is shrinking.

“Two-thirds of adults think other Americans have little or no confidence in the federal government. Majorities believe the public’s confidence in the U.S. government and in each other is shrinking, and most believe a shortage of trust in government and in other citizens makes it harder to solve some of the nation’s key problems,” the report states.

Many Americans think it is necessary to clean up the “trust environment”: 68% say it is very important to repair the public’s level of confidence in the federal government, and 58% say the same about improving confidence in fellow Americans.
