NYT 'leak' to pressure Putin-Trump talks and Russia reacts to Hormuz crisis

Izvestia: Russia has no plans of tightening security in Strait of Hormuz

Moscow is not planning to beef up its military presence in the Strait of Hormuz in the wake of the recent oil tanker attacks, Russian State Duma (lower house of parliament) Defense Committee Chairman Vladimir Shamanov told Izvestia. According to him, Russian vessels are not in jeopardy and therefore there are no grounds for tightening security. Meanwhile, the United States, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia have deployed additional forces to the Gulf of Oman, supposedly to protect their vessels from the Iranian threat.

However, other European countries have not responded to this clear provocation against Iran and the incident is unlikely to spoil their relations with the Islamic Republic, experts told the paper.

The Strait of Hormuz has strategic importance for the entire oil market: up to 40% of the world's hydrocarbon exports pass through it. However, as far as Russia is concerned, it has own channels for exporting hydrocarbons, so for Moscow, Hormuz is less important. That’s why the presence of Russia’s warships tasked with protecting navigation in the strait is not large-scale, Shamanov explained.

Russia and China are refraining from taking hasty steps following the example of Washington, which rushed to point fingers at Iran over the attack on the tankers. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas expressed doubts over Washington's evidence on Tehran’s alleged involvement in the explosion. According to Director of the Center on the Near and Middle East at the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies Vladimir Fitin, Berlin’s behavior proves that Western Europe is not ready to give up its partnership with Iran. "US statement on Tehran’s involvement in the attacks is the same fake news as its rhetoric on the use of chemical weapons by the government of Bashar Assad," the expert said. "Western Europeans are not that blind to swallow any bait, which Washington gives them. They are well aware that this is an unfounded accusation, and that’s why they won’t rush to sever ties with Iran like in the case with the nuclear deal." The EU is unlikely to slap sanctions on Tehran until an international investigation into the tanker attacks is over. The expert noted that the attack on oil tankers in the Persian Gulf is apparently not the last. The US will continue pursuing its own game against Iran and carrying out similar provocations, Fitin said.

Israel’s Secretive Nuclear Facility Leaking as Watchdog Finds Israel Has Nearly 100 Nukes

Israel is one of only five nations in the world that refuse to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, an international treaty aimed at ending the proliferation of nuclear weapons and achieving global nuclear disarmament.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) — an international watchdog organization focusing on conflicts, the arms trade and nuclear proliferation — released a new report on Monday that claimed that Israel has nearly a hundred nuclear warheads, more than previously thought.

The SIPRI report described Israel’s nuclear arsenal as follows: 30 gravity bombs capable of delivering nuclear weapons by fighter jets; an additional 50 warheads that can be delivered by land-based ballistic missiles; and an unknown number of nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missiles that would grant Israel a sea-based second-strike capability.

In total, the SIPRI report estimated that Israel possesses between 80 and 90 nuclear weapons, an increase over previous years. SIPRI was unable, however, to confirm those estimates with Israel’s government, which has a long-standing policy of refusing to comment on its nuclear weapons program — a policy it describes as “nuclear ambiguity.”

As a result of this “nuclear ambiguity” policy, the actual number of Israeli nuclear weapons is unknown. Some other organizations, such as the U.S.-based Nuclear Threat Initiative, have estimated that Israel has produced enough weapons-grade plutonium to arm between 100 and 200 nuclear warheads. Israel is one of only five nations in the world that refuse to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, an international treaty aimed at ending the proliferation of nuclear weapons and achieving global nuclear disarmament.

During a speech last August in front of the Dimona nuclear reactor in the Negev Desert, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to use nuclear weapons to “wipe out” Israel’s enemies. More recently, Netanyahu and his allies in the U.S. accused Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons, despite the fact that intelligence agencies of both the U.S. and Israel have long recognized that Iran has no such program.

Chapter 7 on ‘human settlements’, which emerged from the first Rio Conference in 1992, received huge political push back from developing countries and environmentalists at the time of the negotiations over the text. Issues regarding cities and settlements were seen as part of the polluting, unsustainable “brown sector” at the time, as opposed to interventions in the “green sector” focusing on environmental conservation and preservation, as well as efforts to keep people in rural areas from moving to cities. Clearly, today we would see this as an antiquated dichotomy. However, it was only through the insistence of influential UN member states participating in Rio that issues of human settlements were put on the environmental agenda.

Fast forward from ==Agenda 21 to COP21== and we see an almost complete reversal. Issues of cities and informal settlements are central to the discussion on promoting resilience and meeting climate change goals, with developing countries such as Bangladesh and the Philippines leading that charge at both national and international for a, as well as in their Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) under the Paris Climate Agreement. This effort has been bolstered by the promulgation of the SDGs, which seek to align action on poverty reduction and resilience, notably through SDG11.

Informal settlements today

Poor settlements, whether they are informal or formal, have a higher exposure to many climate change impacts, as they are often located on lower level land that is already more prone to flooding. They are therefore likely to be at higher risk from either sea level rise or storm events. Examples of this include the West Point slum in Monrovia, Liberia or the relatively newer slum areas along the canals of Kolkata, India. The urban poor often do not have the luxury of choosing where to site their homes, so are more vulnerable than those who can choose to live in a less exposed part of the city. The housing materials of the poor in cities are often less robust and are therefore less likely to withstand extreme weather events and associated impacts. This increases the vulnerability of the poor, as the level of impact is proportionately higher than for those in more robust houses that may receive only a small amount of damage during extreme events. The provision of services such as electricity and power, sanitation and fresh water are frequently inadequate for informal settlements, particularly in comparison to wealthier populations in the same cities. These services contribute to the adaptive capacity and level of vulnerability of the poor areas.

The working poor in many cities are more likely to be engaged in activities outside, predominantly unprotected from the weather. This greatly increases their exposure to temperature changes and extreme weather events such as heat waves. For example, street vendors and rickshaw drivers in cities such as Mumbai, Bangkok and Phnom Penh must continue to work unprotected during days of extreme temperatures in order to earn their livelihood. Alternatively, some workplaces, such as local markets or informal factories, are located close to the worker’s home and are themselves severely impacted by any extreme event. Should these workplaces be closed for any period of time, the incomes and livelihoods of the poor are directly affected. If their workplaces are on the other side of the city, the urban poor must rely on transport that may be impacted by extreme climate events – again, potentially threatening their income and livelihood. Thus for a variety of situations, the poor are more sensitive to potential climate change impacts, as any change may affect their incomes and livelihoods.

Moving forward

To enable greater progress it is necessary to more systematically address security of tenure issues and include corresponding safeguards in resilience policies and procedures, including those of the vertical climate funds. Many of the forced evictions we have witnessed of late in West African cities have been carried out in response to “resilience shocks”…

South Africa: Black Rapes Farmer’s Wife in Front of Her Kids, Molests Daughter, Threatens to Kill Son

A South African mother was put through a ‘living nightmare’ by a rapist who held a gun to her children’s head to force her into sex.

Nicky, 45, was raped in front of her children by 32-year-old Sebenzile Simane – who also sexually molested his victim’s daughter after shooting his way into the farm house.

Simane, who also tied the family up and stole their money, was handed two life sentences and a total of 173 years in prison after he was found guilty of the string of violent crimes in South Africa’s Eastern Cape.

Nicky and her husband Heine, a 44-year-old farmer, who are choosing to tell their story, have been forced out of their farm house and say that farmers in the country face an ongoing threat of violence.

Describing her ordeal, Nicky revealed how:

Her attacker shot her in the bottom as she shielded her children from his bullets. Simane threatened to ‘shoot off’ her 15-year-old son’s feet unless he raped his mother. The gunman laid Nicky’s daughter down beside her and undressed her and tried to rape her. He only agreed not to rape the 13-year-old girl if she watched him rape her mother instead. Simane raped the mother twice and only spared her a third rape as she had lost too much blood to have sex.

The white-washed £1.3million farmhouse – set in nearly 1,000 acres of land – had belonged to the family for a century and Nicky’s two sons, aged nine and 15, and her 13-year-old daughter had been brought up there.

The family home was so remote that their nearest neighbour was a mile away and did not hear the gunshots at the home.

After surviving the horrific ordeal the family is now planning to move to Australia to set up a new farm there.

Describing what happened on March 23, 2018, Nicky said a stream of bullets came blasting through the patio door, narrowly missing her 15-year-old son’s head.

Nicky said: ‘With the bullets smashing through the windows I can only describe our feeling as being hunted like wild animals.

He shot his way through a sliding patio door to get in. ‘What followed I can only describe as four hours of pure hell – just sick torture and depravity,’ Nicky said.

‘He held the gun to my nine-year-old son’s head and threatened to shoot him unless I complied. ‘I told my little one to be quiet or else this man would kill us. All I saw were his silent tears rolling down his little cheeks for the next four hours. The sight of that will be with me forever. ‘He tied us all up with fencing wire so tight that our hands lost their circulation and turned grey. ‘He shouted at my children that he was there to kill their father and that he would chop him up in front of them. He said that when he came through the door they would watch him butchered. ‘He then repeatedly threatened to shoot my eldest son’s feet off if he didn’t obey him and then ordered him to rape me. I had never heard such a sick thing before and was totally mortified. ‘All I could do was beg him not to make my son do that. He just kept pointing the gun at my son’s feet and saying he would shoot them unless he raped his mum in front of his brother and sister. ‘I begged and pleaded with him not to do this and to take me to another room and take me instead.’ Explaining what happened next, she said: ‘He grabbed me and forced me to my bedroom and raped me there. There was blood everywhere as I had already been badly shot. I could do nothing as my hands were tied behind my back. ‘He then brought my 13-year-old daughter to the bedroom, undressed her and attempted to rape her. He was sexually molesting her and all I could do was beg for mercy and to take me again. ‘So instead of raping her he forced my beautiful innocent daughter to watch as he raped me again. ‘I cannot describe the anger this man displayed toward us and I knew as he raped me that if my children had any chance of survival I had to get this man away from them and the farm house. ‘You don’t care about yourself – you just don’t want your children to die and you do all you can.’

Jews were heavily involved in the movement to bring an end to white rule in South Africa. Hear it from the Jews themselves.

In 1963, after South African police arrested six Jews and seven blacks in a raid on an African National Congress hideout in the Johannesburg suburb of Rivonia—a sweep that eventually landed Nelson Mandela in prison for more than 25 years—a white nationalist newspaper asked whether Jews were unhappy in South Africa. The community’s Board of Deputies responded unequivocally that the opposite was true, promising that South Africa’s Jews were loyal and patriotic. “No part of the community can or should be asked to accept responsibility” for the actions of a few, the board insisted in its official reply.

In time, of course, Mandela became a hero, and the actions of those few became a point of pride for South African Jews. Beginning with his years at Johannesburg’s more or less integrated University of the Witwatersrand—aka “Wits”—and later as an apprentice to a Jewish law firm, Nelson Mandela had a political life that was profoundly intertwined with those of Jewish activists who, to varying degrees, found in their Jewish identity the imperative to object to a system that, while almost completely welcoming to them, treated blacks in a way that many of these children of European refugees found discomfitingly familiar.

While most South Africa Jews took the silent, implicitly conservative position of the Board of Deputies, the great majority of white South Africans involved in “the struggle” were Jewish. Many were Communists. Most were lawyers. A few had money. But all faced what has been described as a “double marginality”: not fully accepted as white, while also alienated from an organized Jewish community beholden to the powers that be.

That so many Jews surrendered the comforts of their own relatively privileged lives—indeed, in at least one case, surrendered life itself—to join Mandela and the ANC, though they had little material stake relative to their black comrades, is in itself a testament to the radical legacy these Jews brought with them out of Europe to the other end of the globe.

But now that the Jews have achieved their objective, and the country has been ruined with black rule, it seems they don’t want to stick around to enjoy the new “Rainbow Nation.”

If South African Jews feel compelled to uproot themselves, Jewish community leaders console themselves in the fact that many are going to Israel. “For us, that’s a positive thing,” says Wendy Kahn, national director of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.

Geoff Cohen, the educational director of Herzlia, the leading Jewish day school in Cape Town, says his students are sent off with the following message: “If you’re not going to stay home, then go home.”

And that is what Jewish lawmaker Michael Bagraim is advising his own children. “I go to lots of Shabbat dinner tables, so I know what people are talking about,” says the Democratic Alliance MP — one of four Jews to serve in the current parliament. “They are extremely worried. Everyone is encouraging their children to leave. I’m encouraging mine as well. And yet I’m a proud South African. I don’t want to leave ever. But I know that if I have to run — and I’ve always got a bag packed — I’ll run to Israel.”

Of interest, first of all, is that 4 out of the 400 MPs in South Africa are Jews, 1% of the total. The population of South Africa overall is 57 million. The Jewish population is 50,000, less than 0.1%. So Jews are overrepresented in the South African Parliament by a factor of more than 10. Secondly, these Jews, who debate and decide the country’s future, nonetheless have no deep-rooted commitment to it. They advise their children to leave and keep a suitcase permanently packed, ready to jump on a plane at a moment’s notice. Will this outlook not affect the deliberations they make? Of course it will. And this is true for elected Jewish representatives around the world. To them, a country is just a hotel. Except one, of course.

Think how many back-to-the-wall moments throughout history there have been – Greeks versus Persians, for example – where the absolute, unshakable commitment of a people to defend its own land made a difference to the outcome. If you have Jews in your deliberative body, that commitment just isn’t going to be there.

The same pernicious pattern we see in South Africa recurs throughout history. Jews enter a country, consolidate their power in it, then begin pursuing some process of destructive change, calling it Tikkun Olam (“Healing the world”). Anyone who opposes the destructive change or points out the Jewish role in it is accused of “antisemitism.” In the end, the destructive change is achieved and the country is healed ruined. Jews may enjoy some temporary privileged status as a result of riding so high on the wave of destruction. But soon their privilege is resented, the fact that the country is now ruined comes to general notice and affects the Jews themselves, and, of course, the role the Jews played in bringing that ruin about cannot fail to be perceived. Time to grab that suitcase and move on. Find a new host. Pattern repeats. (And once they’ve found their new host, the Jews will write books vilifying the people in the country they just left, accusing them of antisemitism for having attempted to forestall the ruin the Jews were intent on bringing upon them.)

Why do Jews do it? Can’t they stop themselves? It’s not good for them; it’s not good for the goyim. But even when they enjoy comfortable and privileged lives, they somehow feel impelled to act as an entropic force, dissolving the structural bonds of whatever society they live in.

For too many Jews, the tragic truth is: No, they can’t help it. It’s their nature. It reminds me of the parable of the Scorpion and the Fox, memorably told by Chakotay in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Scorpion,” as the humans debated whether they could have a mutually beneficial relationship with the Borg.

Where will the Jews go, after they have ruined the West? Will the Chinks let them in?

In a remarkable admission from Charles Silberman: “American Jews are committed to cultural tolerance because of their belief – one firmly rooted in history – that Jews are safe only in a society acceptant of a wide range of attitudes and behaviors, as well as a diversity of religious and ethnic groups. It is this belief, for example, not approval of homosexuality, that leads an overwhelming majority of American Jews to endorse ‘gay rights’ and to take a liberal stance on most other so-called ‘social’ issues.”

He is saying, in effect, that when Jews make the diversity-is-our-strength argument it is in support of their real goal of diluting a society’s homogeneity so that Jews will feel safe. They are couching a Jewish agenda in terms they think gentiles will accept. Likewise, as the second part of the Silberman quotation suggests, Jews may support deviant movements, not because they think it is good for the country but because it is good for the Jews.

Prof. Silberman also provides an illuminating quote from a Jewish economist who thought that republicans had more sensible economic policies but who voted for the Democratic presidential candidate anyway. His reason? “I’d rather live in a country governed by the faces I saw at the Democratic convention than those I saw at the Republican convention.” This man apparently distrusts white gentiles and voted for a racially mixed party even if its economic policies were wrong. What is good for Jews appears to come before what is good for the country.

The Amway has capacity for about 20,000 people. Trump tweeted Monday that there had been more than 100,000 requests for tickets. People in line said they had been told the first 100 people would get to sit in the front row.
