they get too worked up on drama promulgated by power users at the site who's sole purpose seems to be disrupting continuity and diverting any real effective work being done by any member of the community.

this same group of power users is allowed permissions to alter site code by the owner himself, who much is friendlier with this group than other members of the community.

not too long ago, PuttItOut threatened FastJack and QRV with commandeering controls of the sub due to the mods' inability to combat the spam that was of a vile nature which was flooding the sub. Naturally, the culprits turned out to be (as per their own admission) the same group mentioned above.

this is very clear, at this point, that the group in question is responsible, at least in part, for some of, if not all, of the same type of attacks that occur here.

Voat is a very odd place, but not much unlike what we're typically used to dealing with. What especially stands out, however, is how conveniently no one notices the rapid flow of changing moderation which seems more or less to just be cycled between different users of the same group. They also seem to not notice the owner of the site's intense cooperation with these individuals. It seems the ordinary user is being lulled to sleep, all while being a bit too distracted to actually nail down what it is that they should be focused on or attain the competence to act should they actually achieve any sort of focus.

Trump directs agencies to cut advisory boards by 'at least' one-third

President Trump is directing all agencies to cut their advisory boards by “at least” one third.

The executive order issued Friday evening directs all federal agencies to “evaluate the need” for each of their current advisory committees.

The order gives agencies until Sept. 30 to terminate, at a minimum, one-third of their committees.

Committees that qualify for the chopping block include those that have completed their objective, had their work taken up by other panels or where the subject matter has “become obsolete.”

Another defining factor listed includes whether the agency itself has determined that the cost of operating the agency is “excessive in relation to the benefits to the Federal Government.”

Critics say the order is another administration attack on experts who provide scientific advice.

“For the past two years they have been shrinking and restricting the role of federal science advisory committees,” Gretchen Goldman, the research director with the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union for Concerned Scientists, said in a statement. “Now they’re removing the possibility of even making decisions based on robust science advice. It's no longer death by a thousand cuts. It's taking a knife to the jugular.”

There are an average of 1,000 advisory committees with more than 60,000 members, according to data from the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), that cover a range of topics including disposal of high-level nuclear waste, the depletion of atmospheric ozone, addressing AIDS and improving schools.

They are often filled by people considered to be at the top of their fields who can provide important technical advice, and GSA said the boards and committees “have played an important role in shaping programs and policies of the federal government from the earliest days of the Republic.”

Friday’s order is the most dramatic step in the Trump administration’s escalating pushback to the advisory committees.

Previously, science advisory boards in particular under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Interior Department have faced numerous instances of resistance and position cuts.

Former EPA head Scott Pruitt in October 2017 issued a directive that barred scientists who received federal grants for studies from also sitting on advisory boards and committees, arguing it was a conflict of interest.

The move was widely viewed as a way to tilt the voices represented on the boards, increasing the number of members who came from industry groups.

“It’s clearly a political maneuver to change the composition of these advisory committees,” Genna Reed, lead science and policy analyst with the Union of Concerned Scientists, recently told The Hill after the EPA’s Science Advisory Board meeting.

Despite the actions, viewed as a muzzling of science by critics, many science advisory boards continued to make critical requests and recommendations. In May 2018, EPA’s Science Advisory Board, recommended a review of the agency's decision to roll back a controversial Obama-era policy on auto emissions.

Questions the group posed to the EPA included asking what the repercussions to deploying the new fuel standard may be and how they could best be mitigated, and what the current barriers to consumer acceptance of "redesigned or advanced technology vehicles" are and how those could be overcome.

The board also met last week to discuss the EPA’s regulation of cancer-linked chemicals known as PFAS, as well as the agency’s controversial proposal to bar consideration of studies that don't make their underlying data public.

Both committees would qualify for cutting under the new executive order.

The White House did not immediately return a request for comment.

An EPA spokesperson said the agency “will review its FACA obligations in line with the President’s executive order,” referring to the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

An Interior spokesperson said the agency "looks forward to another opportunity to review” their committees, in order to “improve the utility of these advisory committees.”

The Interior Department currently has more than 100 federal advisory committees. According to a 2017 internal review, Interior’s committees incurred more than $10 million in direct and indirect costs annually, the spokesperson said.

The review also found that, at the time of review, 41 committees had submitted fewer than 20 recommendations to Interior.

“We will work diligently to implement President Trump's Executive Order on FACAs to eliminate wasteful spending and ensure these advisory committees benefit the American people,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Exelon's status as renewable power force teeters

A major California bankruptcy could lead the Chicago-based power giant to lose most of its wind farms—and a huge solar power ranch—thanks to a decision two years ago to mortgage them for hundreds of millions.

Exelon markets itself as the greenest of the country's major power generators. Much of that claim is based on the carbon-free nature of its nuclear power plants, the largest fleet in the nation, but it also stems from a substantial renewable power group, including more than 40 wind farms in 11 states.

Now a decision the Chicago-based energy giant made two years ago to pull hundreds of millions in cash out of those renewable assets while retaining operational control has put Exelon's continued ownership of at least 26 of those wind projects—and its status as a player in the renewable industry—in jeopardy. Also at risk are the bulk of Exelon's 521 megawatts in solar power projects around the country.

An improbable series of events has laid bare the risks Exelon took on in 2017 when it sold nearly half its ownership of the affected wind farms and solar projects to a large life insurer and then took on $850 million in debt on the assets. Effectively, the company mortgaged the businesses—identified in the Nov. 28, 2017, loan agreement, which Exelon filed with the Securities & Exchange Commission—for as much as it could pluck out of them.

The assets themselves were collateral for the bank loan, with cash flows from the businesses mainly used to pay off the debt. Given that all the projects had long-term contracts to sell their output at fixed prices, the loan seemed as safe as any like it reasonably could be.

STAYING IN CONTROL

When Exelon originally struck the renewables loan deal, CEO Chris Crane offered insights into the reasons. Asked May 3, 2017, why Exelon didn't just sell the assets, Crane said, "We're still committing to a clean portfolio. Being in the renewable business is still part of our strategy. At this point, maintaining the operational control, the maintenance of the facilities, is important for us for our investment."

When Exelon sold a 49 percent interest in most of its renewable assets to John Hancock Life Insurance, it was paid $400 million. It cleared another $785 million (after various costs) from the loan on the assets.

The wind farms, desert solar facility and a biomass generator in Georgia—all pledged as collateral for the loan—have the combined capacity to generate more than 1,500 megawatts, nearly equivalent to two nuclear reactors. Exelon's mortgaging of the projects was a clever strategy to monetize assets and maintain a brand image the company prizes.

Crane and company can only hope PG&E continues to buy from Antelope Valley. But if not, they have difficult decisions ahead, most likely involving laying out more cash to preserve Exelon's image as a clean-energy force or losing that status, forged over many years.

Crowdstrike went public just a few days ago (via Wall Street Journal)

“Shares in cybersecurity company CrowdStrike Holdings Inc. soared in their first day of trading Wednesday, closing up 71% from the IPO price and highlighting continued investor interest in fast-growing business-software firms. The results would value the company at roughly $11.6 billion if underwriters exercise all their options to purchase shares.”

It would be interesting to see who bought the offering, which could be the payoff to Crowdstrike for its crackerjack job for Hillary/DNC.
