Aren't delirious Democrats now accusing Team Obama of treason?

If you read the newspapers, tuned into the cable TV pundits or received an email from one of the Democrats running for president, you’d swear Donald Trump was back to his treasonous ways.

All that was missing was an annoying OMG text exclamation punctuating the unfounded claims that Trump might violate the law in 2020 by accepting intelligence on a political rival from a foreign country. The inference, of course, is that it would come from a hostile power such as Russia or North Korea or Iran.

Actually, what Trump told ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos was that he’d consider taking intelligence dirt about a rival from a friendly ally. (Norway was the actual example he used.)

Sound familiar? That is EXACTLY what the Obama administration did in 2016. It’s something no one in the media or the political space grasped during the tsunami of breathless reaction that followed the interview.

In July 2016, the Obama administration accepted unsolicited information from Alexander Downer, an Australian diplomat who just happened to have helped arrange a $25 million government donation to the Clinton Foundation years before. Downer said that he had witnessed a Trump campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, bragging about some dirt that the Russians supposedly had on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Though Downer’s claim was reported two-plus months after the alleged event, and was only hearsay gathered at a London tavern, the Obama administration gave it to the FBI which, in turn, thought it was weighty enough to justify opening a counterintelligence case against the lawfully elected Republican nominee for president.

In other words, the Democratic administration accepted dirt from a foreign friendly and used it to justify investigating its GOP rival.

And then, OMG, they did it again just a few weeks later.

In October 2016, less than three weeks from Election Day, the Obama Justice Department approved a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant to spy on the Trump campaign through its former adviser, Carter Page. The primary evidence supporting the warrant? A dossier written by a foreign friendly named Christopher Steele, a retired MI6 intelligence agent from Great Britain. Of course, the Justice Department and the FBI forgot to tell the courts that Steele actually was working on behalf of the Clinton campaign, but that’s a small detail for the purpose of this column.

For the second time in three months, the Obama administration took dirt on Trump from a foreign ally — this time, from one in Europe — and weaponized it for a criminal investigation.

No offense, but the media really are giving Trump way too much credit for the idea he floated on ABC News. The real scandal is that he’s just plagiarizing a playbook already used by Obama, Clinton and those 2016 Democrats.

And every Democrat and media pundit who accuses Trump of treason for considering taking dirt from, say, Norway in 2020 has now, by extension, accused the Obama administration of committing treason in 2016.

Of course, you’d never know that from the way the media and politicians have treated it.

The whole episode reminds me of one of my earliest memories as a professional journalist.

When I first hit the presidential campaign trail as a reporter chasing the likes of Bob Dole, Jesse Jackson, George H.W. Bush and a young Al Gore across the farm fields of Middle America in 1988, I stumbled across a silver-haired man at a greasy-spoon restaurant in La Crosse, Wis. He was an old factory worker at the local brewery. A blue-collar company man who leaned Democrat….

ROME (AP) — Italian director Franco Zeffirelli, famed for operas, films and television, has died in Rome at the age of 96.

Zeffirelli’s son Luciano said his father died at home at noon on Saturday. “He had suffered for a while, but he left in a peaceful way,” he said.

Zeffirelli delighted audiences around the world with his romantic vision and often extravagant productions, most famously captured in his cinematic rendering of “Romeo and Juliet” and the miniseries “Jesus of Nazareth.”

Government probes MLS hidden Realtor commissions, could be next housing-market domino to topple

Real-estate agents have long kept information about their commission structure close to their chest

Another potential blow has been struck against the longstanding way in which real-estate agents get paid.

In April, the Department of Justice wrote to CoreLogic, a real-estate software provider, demanding that the company turn over information on how it works with Multiple Listing Services, the locally owned and operated compilations of real estate data.

The “civil investigative demand” concerned potential antitrust law violations, Justice said, specifically “practices that may unreasonably restrain competition in the provision of residential real-estate brokerages services in local markets in the United States.”

It’s not the first time that Justice has taken an interest in how competition gets stifled in the residential real estate market. And the April demand joins another high-profile legal case: a lawsuit filed in March which charges that real-estate brokerages and their industry group conspire to keep agent commissions artificially high.

In the American way of transacting real estate, buyers never have any reason to demand a higher level of service or a lower fee from their own broker since the seller is essentially paying the tab for both sides. And often, when sellers try to offer fees lower than the 3% that’s standard across most of the country, brokers tend to steer buyer clients away from those listings even if the house was a good fit.

Against that backdrop, in an industry that has resisted change and operated with an “I’ll-scratch-your-back…” ethos, an overhaul of the MLS, the information infrastructure of the industry, might be the ultimate example of a revolution underway.

“I think everyone smells change in the air,” said Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin, a discount real estate brokerage, one of the earliest disruptors to try to take on the established way of brokering residential real estate. “Certainly everyone in the industry either acknowledges [change] or embraces it,” he said.

The MLS is often referred to as a singular entity, but there are hundreds of iterations. Each aggregates information on properties available for sale in its local area. The National Association of Realtors describes it this way, playing up its benefits as a pool of listings: “The MLS is a tool to help listing brokers find cooperative brokers working with buyers to help sell their clients’ homes. Without the collaborative incentive of the existing MLS, brokers would create their own separate systems of cooperation, fragmenting rather than consolidating property information.”

The Justice Department has long been interested in how the various MLS operate. As MarketWatch was one of the first publications to report, last year a decade-long consent decree against NAR was lifted. That agreement was reached in 2008 after local real estate associations and listing services spent years refusing to allow listing access to upstarts like Redfin, which can tend to undermine an agent’s role in the process and engage the consumer in the house hunt.

i.e. cut them out of the commission structure, many NAR listed agents will refuse to do business with Redfin listed property's or FSBO's (for sale by owner).

Agent commission is clearly what’s of interest to Justice now. The very first item on the list of demands sent to CoreLogic, was “all documents relating to any MLS member’s search of, or ability to search, MLS listings on any of the company’s multiple listing platforms, based on (i) the amount of compensation offered by listing brokers to buyer brokers; or (ii) the type of compensation, such as a flat fee, offered by listing brokers to buyer brokers.”

In U.S. residential real estate transactions, agents representing both the buyer and the seller are paid from the proceeds of the sale. That means that technically the seller pays the commission of both his own agent and the agent representing the buyer. Of course, anyone in the industry, or anyone who’s bought and sold real estate often enough is keenly aware that’s not entirely true.

The Persian Gulf Petrochemical Company is known as Iran’s largest petrochemical complex and the most profitable. This company is in charge of providing the funding necessary to the IRGC’s financial arm, known as Fort Khatam. This is the largest IRGC financial institution.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Reuters) - The wife of a U.S. representative pleaded guilty on Thursday to federal charges alleging misuse of $250,000 in campaign funds and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors who are also bringing charges against her husband.

The move by Margaret Hunter, wife of Republican U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter, came after she and her husband entered not guilty pleas in August 2018 that they spent campaign funds on items ranging from a holiday in Italy to Minnie Mouse ear headbands at Disneyland.

More than 140 rallies calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment are expected throughout Southern California and the nation today, Saturday, June 15.

At least 16 rallies were planned for the Southland. It was unclear early today how many people would attend the rallies. Counter-protests in support of the president are also expected, including one scheduled at Los Angeles City Hall.

Demonstrations, under the banner “#ImpeachTrump: Act to Defend Democracy,” were set to take place in Van Nuys, Sierra Madre, Redondo Beach, Torrance, Chino Hills, Brea, Riverside, Mission Viejo, Irvine and elsewhere.

The “American people have seen that there is enough evidence to begin the impeachment process of Trump,” said Aaron McCall, chairman of Indivisible OC48, “based on what he’s said in public and also what’s in the redacted Mueller report.”

McCall is organizing impeachment events in Seal Beach and Laguna Beach.

“This is now a rule of law question,” he added. “It’s about whether or not we’re going to stand up for what’s right.”

The Seal Beach rally is among the earliest, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., while others are expected to unfold the rest of the morning and into the afternoon. At least seven protests are set to start at 1 p.m.

But not all of those in the streets Saturday will be rallying against Trump. At least one event, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles City Hall, was organized to support the President.

“Remember there is always haters against Trump,” the counter-protest’s organizer Valerie Barber wrote in a post on the event’s Facebook page. “Trump derangement syndrome is real. We will keep on doing our thing. Trump is your President like it or not.”

As the nation and its leadership grow increasingly polarized, the impeachment debate has fueled that division. In the wake of special prosecutor Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States elections and suspected links between Trump associates and Russian officials, the fissures have deepened.

The president and top Republicans declared the report cleared the president of wrongdoing. Democrats have called for deeper investigation, citing incidents they believe could be obstruction of justice. In response, the president has set forth efforts to “investigate the investigators,” claiming the probes of his campaign and administration are politically motivated and illegal.

Though some Democratic candidates for president have spoke in favor of impeachment, most Americans are not yet on board, according to polls.

A poll conducted June 6-10 by Quinnipiac University found 33% of Americans in favor of impeachment, 61% against the idea, and 6% unsure. The poll, which has a 3.5% margin of error, was conducted before June 12, when Trump told ABC News that he would accept politically helpful information from a foreign power in the future, and suggested he might not tell the FBI about the offer.

A House resolution to order an impeachment inquiry was introduced in the House in recent weeks, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that the effort is “not even close” to having enough support in the House.

Some observers believe impeachment proceedings would only help Trump win re-election by solidifying his supporters in opposition of such an effort.
