FAKE HATE: Jewish Family 'Staged' Antisemitic Attack Against Themselves, Vandalized Own Business

The Jewish owners of a kosher cafe in Winnipeg have been charged by police for staging a violent attack against themselves and spray-painting their own business with antisemitic graffiti.

Their cafe was the target of repeated antisemitic vandalism the past few months.

What looked like an anti-Semitic attack at a Winnipeg cafe that drew public concern and political condemnation was not a hate crime but an alleged sham staged by owners of the business, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded last Thursday to a report that a woman who worked at the BerMax Caffe and Bistro was assaulted and that the business was vandalized and spray-painted with hate-related graffiti. It was the night before Passover.

After a lengthy investigation involving 25 officers and 1,000 hours of investigative work, police said they charged the three owners of the cafe — including the woman who was reportedly assaulted — with public mischief.

Police announced on Facebook they arrested BerMax Caffe and Bistro owners Alexander Berent, 56, Oxana Berent, 48 and Maxim Berent, 29.

These individuals are all owners of the café. They are each charged with one count of Public Mischief and released. Public Mischief (CCC 140 (1)) occurs when an individual, with intent to mislead, causes a peace officer to enter on or continue an investigation based on a false statement or causing another person to be suspected of having committed an offence to divert suspicion from themselves.

Investigators believe that the initial report of a robbery was staged. Further, the anti-semitic graffiti and vandalism were also falsely reported as being done by outside suspects.

"The restaurant was founded in 2015 by the Berent family – Jewish-Ukrainian immigrants who came to Canada in 2005 by way of Israel – and was operated by Oxana Berent and her son, Maxim," CJN reports.

France's Macron responds to yellow vests with promise of reforms

French President Emmanuel Macron has given a long-awaited response to the yellow vest protest movement with promises of tax cuts, higher pensions and a reform of the civil service.

Despite insisting that order must return, he acknowledged a "lack of trust" in the establishment.

Mr Macron said he stood by his reforms.

Macron offers tax cuts to yellow vests

Emmanuel Macron has pledged tax cuts but says the French would also have to work more as he outlined his response to months of anti-government protests.

Macron is under pressure to quell nearly six months of "yellow vest" demonstrations that have brought weekly havoc to cities nationwide.

A first salvo of measures offered last December and worth 10 billion euros ($A16 billion) failed to calm anger among low-income workers.

Macron, who has struggled to shake off the moniker "president of the rich" over his past as an investment banker, said he wanted a "significant" cut in income tax, which would be financed by closing loopholes some companies benefit from.

He said government spending would also be squeezed and the French would have to work longer hours.

The Trump administration has enacted a series of new policies in an attempt to curb illegal immigration. Aside from his desire to build the wall, the administration has begun cracking down on the “catch and release” policy, tightening HUD’s requirements, while also signing a memorandum on Monday that recommended travel restrictions on countries who have a high rate of visa overstays.

Amazon Jumps And Dumps As AWS Growth Slows, Outlook Disappoints

Last quarter, when Amazon reported otherwise respectable earnings, the market hammered the stock after the company guided to the lowest revenue growth since 2001. And, as the company reported moments ago, while its guidance may have been slightly downbeat, it wasn't too far off as Amazon reported Q1 net sales of $59.7BN, just above the $59.68BN consensus estimate, while generating an impressive $7.09 in Q1 EPS, well above the $4.67 expected.

Here are the summary highlights:

EPS of $7.09, beating estimates of $4.67

Revenue of $59.7BN, in line with estimates of $59.68BN

Operating income of $4.42 billion, also beating consensus estimates of $3.10 billion

Amazon Web Services rose 42% to $7.70BN, Exp. $7.67BN; this compares to growth of 45% last quarter and 46% the quarter before.

The good news here is that whereas Q1 revenue did come in slightly better than expected, it still showed a significant slowdown, rising 17% in Q1, the slowest growth pace in 4 years. Looking ahead, the slowdown is expected to accelerate, as the company now expects Q2 net sales of $59.5BN to $63.5BN, with the midpoint of $61.5BN coming in below the Wall Street consensus estimate of $62.4BN. If revenue comes in right on the midpoint, it would represent another top-line slowdown of 16.3% in Q2.

That said, the company's profit margin nearly doubled, from 3.8% last year to an impressive 7.4% in Q1 2019, largely thanks to the increasing contribution from AWS.

On the other hand, Amazon's operating income outlook disappointed, with the company now expecting it to come in between $2.6 billion and $3.6 billion, compared with $3.0 billion in second quarter 2018, but well below the Wall Street consensus estimate of $4.2 billion.

One notable improvement was the sharp drop in the international loss, which shrank to just $90MM in Q1 2018, down sharply from the $622MM loss a year prior.

As noted above, the all important Amazon Web Services was once again responsible for more than half of Amazon's entire profit, with the division generating $7.7BN in revenue and $2.22BN in operating income, a 28.9% margin, down from the 29.3% in Q4, and responsible for 50.2% of Amazon's total operating income of $4.42BN. Slightly more concerning was the slowdown in AWS revenue, which rose 42%, down from 45% last quarter.

Meanwhile, Amazon's other revenue, which includes Amazon's advertising business, grew only 36%, a sharp drop from the 97% growth in Q4 and the 132% growth it had a year ago. One possible reason for the slowdown is that Kroger, Walmart, Target and other big retailers are building out their own in-house digital advertising businesses.

Looking at Amazon's Bricks and Mortar presence, the price cuts implemented by Whole Foods appear to have helped overall sales in the "physical stores'' segment, which rose 1% to $4.3 billion compared with the year-ago period, reversing a 3% decline in the fourth quarter.

The stock initially spiked on the big EPS beat, but has since retraced all gains as investors focused on the slowdown in AWS and the disappointing operating income guidance.

Russia Launches Deadly Doomsday Submarine

Russia launched a new Belgorod submarine designed to carry nuclear drones capable of creating devastating tidal waves. The submarine, known as Special Project 09852, is a nuclear-powered special purpose and research submarine, Russian News Agency TASS reported Tuesday. The Russian Navy said the submarine is designed to carry “Poisedon” drones and will be used starting in 2020 according to TASS.

“The main feature photographed which raises questions is a bulge on the lower hull,” defense analyst H.I. Sutton wrote in a blog post. “This may relate to retractable steerable thrusters for precise position holding.” Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) and the Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk originally said the Belgorod was intended for research in ocean explorations, search and rescue operations, underwater installations, and monitoring of underwater routes. However, a Russian news outlet reported in 2017 that the Belgorod had new lengthened chambers designed to hold the Poisedon drones, making it the largest submarine in the Russian Navy according to TASS.

Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed the Poisedon drones in a state of the nation address in March 2018, according to Business Insider. The drones are nuclear torpedoes with ranges up to 100 megatons and speeds of 125 mph, which could send catastrophic waves of radiation throughout the ocean and onto continents for decades, according to Business Insider. Putin reportedly said in statements in 2018 that the drones would render U.S. defense systems useless, according to Fox News.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump approved payment of a $2 million bill presented by North Korea to cover its care of comatose American Otto Warmbier, a college student who died shortly after being returned home from 17 months in a North Korean prison, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

The Post said an invoice was handed to State Department envoy Joseph Yun hours before Warmbier, 22, was flown out of Pyongyang in a coma on June 13, 2017. Warmbier died six days later.

The U.S. envoy, who was sent to retrieve Warmbier, signed an agreement to pay the medical bill on instructions passed down from Trump, the Post reported, citing two unidentified people familiar with the situation.

“We do not comment on hostage negotiations, which is why they have been so successful during this administration,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told Reuters.

Yun also told Reuters he could not comment on diplomatic exchanges. But in an interview with CNN on Thursday, he said he was given broad orders to secure Warmbier’s release and he understood the instructions came directly from Trump.

“Yes, my orders were completely: do whatever you can to get Otto back,” he told CNN. Yun said he understood that money had been exchanged in previous releases of U.S. prisoners and was justified as “hospital costs,” but he gave no further details.

Representatives for the State Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Several agents walked into City Hall Thursday morning and left with boxes throughout the morning. City Solicitor Andre Davis said the search was contained to Mayor Pugh’s office in the second-floor suites. This includes City Council president’s office, the city comptroller’s office and councilmembers’ offices.

Pugh’s Current Home

FBI and IRS agents were seen raiding the mayor’s home on Ellamont Avenue early Thursday morning, at one point an agent walked into Pugh’s home with a case of water. They left with more than 12 boxes of items from her home.

Pugh’s Second Home

Her previous home, on Dennlyn Avenue in Northwest Baltimore, was lined with yellow tape. This address is tied with her Healthy Holly franchise.

Agents were seen carrying out two large boxes earlier Thursday morning.

FBI and IRS agents served a limited subpoena for original financial records belonging to the mayor.

Her attorney said the requested documents had previously been sequestered from all other client matters of the firm and were not commingled with any of the firm’s other clients’ information or documents.

They said the agents were directed to the sequestered area with the mayor’s documents and the firm complied with the subpoena.

“There was no ‘raid’ of the firm as reported in the media and the agents did not conduct a search of the firm. The agents also did not seek or obtain any attorney-client privileged communications with the Mayor, or any other information or documents from the firm or its clients. The agents were polite and courteous and the process was conducted in an expeditious and professional manner,” They said in their statement.

“We will continue to vigorously defend the Mayor, who is entitled the presumption of innocence,” They concluded.

Agents also arrived at Maryland Center for Adult Training, one of Pugh’s businesses. She once led the program at the MCAT building. The three Pugh staffers fired Wednesday by acting Mayor Jack Young sat on the board of MCAT from 2017 to 2019.

The webpage has been deleted from the training centers website, but is available via internet archive- and lists the mayor as chair emeritus.

Japan tells U.S. can't link monetary policy to trade, finance minister Aso says: Jiji

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso said on Thursday he told U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin that Tokyo cannot accept discussions that link monetary policy to trade issues, Jiji news agency reported.

Aso also said the two sides agreed that exchange-rate matters would be discussed between financial authorities, and that Tokyo and Washington should not talk about currency issues in the context of the trade debate, according to Jiji.

Aso and Mnuchin held a bilateral meeting in Washington ahead of a summit between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump later this week.
