UniCredit Group Banks Agree to Pay Over $1.3 Billion for Violating Sanctions

UniCredit Bank AG (UCB AG), a financial institution headquartered in Munich, operating under the name HypoVereinsbank, and part of the UniCredit Group has agreed to enter a guilty plea to conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) and to defraud the United States by processing hundreds of millions of dollars of transactions through the U.S. financial system on behalf of an entity designated as a weapons of mass destruction proliferator and other Iranian entities subject to U.S. economic sanctions. UniCredit Bank Austria (BA), another financial institution in the UniCredit Group, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, agreed to forfeit $20 million and entered into a non-prosecution agreement to resolve an investigation into its violations of IEEPA. UniCredit SpA, the parent of both UCB AG and BA, has agreed to ensure that UCB AG and BA’s obligations are fulfilled.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu of the District of Columbia, Assistant Director in Charge William F. Sweeny of the FBI’s New York Field Office and Special Agent in Charge Kelly Jackson of the IRS-Criminal Investigations (CI) Washington Field Division made the announcement.

According to court documents, over the course of almost 10 years, UCB AG knowingly and willfully moved at least $393 million through the U.S. financial system on behalf of sanctioned entities, most of which was for an entity the U.S. Government specifically prohibited from accessing the U.S. financial system. UCB AG engaged in this criminal conduct through a scheme, formalized in its own bank polices and designed to conceal from U.S. regulators and banks the involvement of sanctioned entities in certain transactions. UCB AG routed illegal payments through U.S. financial institutions for the benefit of the sanctioned entities in ways that concealed the involvement of the sanctioned entities, including through the use of companies that UCB AG knew would appear unconnected to the sanctioned entity despite being controlled by the sanctioned entity.

“When the United States sanctioned Iranian entities for proliferating weapons of mass destruction, UCB AG went to great lengths to help one such entity – Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines – evade sanctions to gain access to the U.S. financial system,” said Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski. “The integrity of our financial system requires financial institutions to comply with our laws, and UCB AG willfully failed to do so. Today’s guilty plea and $1.3 billion penalty are just punishments for undermining U.S. sanctions and putting our financial system at risk.”

“UCB AG’s actions in deliberately providing a designated weapons-of-mass-destruction proliferator with access to the U.S. financial system for almost two years after such access was prohibited by U.S. law were particularly egregious,” said U.S. Attorney Liu. “The bank’s impending guilty plea and the accompanying monetary penalty announced today send a clear message that financial institutions that subvert U.S. sanctions, and therefore our national security, should expect severe consequences.”

Panic Erupts At 5th Ave Apple Store After Bedbug Sighting

The iconic Apple store on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue has long been one of the most heavily trafficked in the world. But a group of disgruntled. employees recently complained to the New York Post that the store's management exposed staff and customers to bed bug infestation without warning.

The bed bug sightings, which began about a month ago, culminated in a furor on Friday when a bed bug was spotted inside a manager's office. Employees described a "mass exodus" of employees who fled the store. Frustrated employees said management had been giving. them "the runaround" about the bed bug risk until they finally caved on Friday and brought in a bed bug sniffing dog, which confirmed that bed bugs had been present in a staff locker room.

That was the first time management acknowledged that the threat was real. But that didn't stop the store from dragging its feet on the issue.

"It was just mayhem," an employee told The Post. (MAYHEM!!!!)

"There was a mass exodus… employees were freaking out they felt really unsafe and management kept giving them the runaround."

Staff were asked to double-bag their belongings while a "bed bug beagle" came to search the store. However, the issue had started three to four weeks earlier during the overnight shift, which draws many homeless visitors looking for shelter. After a bed bug was discovered on a table, management roped the area off without explanation, but didn't alert customers or staff to the threat.

The improper handling of the situation exposed both customers and staff to the bed bugs.

The table was left cordoned off while employees and customers were allowed in the store and around the table with no warning of the bed bug threat, an employee said.

Employees complained that the issue, and the store's reluctance in handling it, made them feel "unsafe at work" and like they didn't matter to the company.

"I shouldn’t have to go to work feeling unsafe and unprotected," one worker told The Post.

"We felt very anxious, used and unimportant, like we were just another number."

Even after the store brought in an exterminator, the bed bug sightings continued. One employee picked a bug off their sweater and took a video of it, which was circulated among hundreds of staff.

When management brought an exterminator in for another go, they again failed to inform their employees. Instead, the store mysteriously closed for six hours in the middle of the night. They said the closure was due to a 'water leak'

1 Marine Raider killed, two injured in MRZR accident during California training exercise

Two Marine Raiders were injured and one was later killed after a tactical vehicle accident during a training exercise Saturday at Camp Pendleton, California, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command announced Monday.

Two Raiders received minor injuries and one sustained critical injuries as a result of a single-vehicle accident during a training evolution, a command release detailed.

The vehicle involved was the Polaris MRZR, according to Marine spokesman Nick Mannweiler. The ultra lightweight, all-terrain utility task vehicle is capable of carrying several Marines and combat equipment.

The Raider with critical injuries was aeromedical evacuated to a higher level of care where he passed away on Sunday night, the command release said.

The incident is under investigation.

The identity of the Marine killed will be released after next-of-kin notification.

Once the flames were extinguished, there was a sense of relief that many of the ancient artefacts had been saved but the integrity of the Gothic stone building could still be unstable. Two-thirds of the timber roof is gone—it had been crafted from more than 13,000 oak trees, an entire forest reduced to kindling. Preliminary images of the devastated interior reveal a gaping hole where the 300-foot wooden spire once stood and smoke rising from the ashes of burning pews.

Paris public prosecutor Rémy Heitz announced on Tuesday that a full investigation would uncover how a massive fire was allowed to gut the cathedral. “What we know at this stage is that there was an initial alarm at 6:20 p.m., followed by a procedure to verify this but no fire as found,” Heitz explained. “Then, there was a second alarm at 6:43 p.m. and at that point a fire was detected in the structure.” “The investigation is going to be long and complex,” he added. “We are in the process of interviewing witnesses.”

In the morning rain early Tuesday, Parisians and visitors gathered on the banks of the Seine to mourn the loss of a landmark that, for many, was personal. “This is a very meaningful spot for me,” said Heidi Waterfall, an American living in in Paris. “I feel a strong spiritual power when I go inside. I feel peace and joy.” The South Dakota native had watched in stunned silence, tears rolling down her face, as the cathedral burned and then she heard a chorus she will never forget, the strains of people singing the Hail Mary. Whenever friends visit, the family takes them to see the cathedral. “My middle son always grumbled to go, but last night he said, ‘I’d give anything to go back one more time’,” she said.

Investigators from the Paris public prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into what is for now being called “the unintentional destruction by fire.” They have identified and interviewed some of the construction workers who had been working on the €6 million ($6.8 million), four-year renovation project, which began last April. The restoration of the spire, which crumbled within the first hour of the blaze, was the first phase of a larger, 20-year renovation project on the rest of the cathedral. Some 500,000 steel tubes were brought to the cathedral last summer to construct massive, 300-foot scaffolding around the spire. The ugly, cage-like scaffolding had become a part of the Parisian skyline, as is often the case with the city’s centuries-old monuments under repair.

According to Heitz, some five different construction companies were involved in the ongoing restoration of the cathedral's iconic spire. The work was being overseen by Le Bras Frères, a company headquartered west of the French city of Metz. Founded in 1954, Le Bras Frères specializes in the restoration of historic monuments. Prior to the start of the Notre Dame project, the company had already worked on several of France's historical churches, including those in Amiens, Reims, and Poitiers. Some of the company's workers even appeared in a recent spot about the restoration on the France 1 network, during which they proudly showed reporters around the site. Today, hours after the last embers were extinguished, Le Bras Frères is being subjected to a different kind of attention. A representative of the company refused to answer questions from French reporters on Tuesday, only acknowledging that the investigation was underway. "We will communicate when we are able to, and when we have all the information," a representative of the company told regional daily, Lorraine Actu.

Muslim Activist Calls Out ‘Disgrace’ Ilhan Omar in Brutal Op-Ed

If you listen to the left, the only people who are criticizing Rep. Ilhan Omar are racists and anti-Muslim bigots. Some liberal figures have rushed to defend the Somali-born congresswoman from Minnesota, pointing fingers even as Omar continues to make questionable remarks.

But if the Muslim lawmaker is only under fire because of her background, it’s hard to explain Qanta Ahmed. This week, Ahmed penned a thoughtful Op-Ed piece for Fox News which broke the liberal narrative by calling out Omar as a fellow Muslim woman herself.

“Ilhan Omar is a disgrace to Islam and doesn’t represent my Muslim religion,” Ahmed — a medical doctor and foreign relations activist — wrote in her piece.

“Omar continues to be an embarrassment and a disgrace for me and other American Muslims with her outrageous, ignorant, anti-Semitic and now anti-American comments,” she ranted.

Ahmed was referencing a string of seemingly ignorant and stereotypical statements made by the Minnesota liberal. The most recent gaffe involved Omar referring to the Muslim attackers behind 9/11 as “some people (who) did something.”

The respected activist called out her fellow Muslim not only for her ignorance, but also for her appalling attempt to downplay the September 11 terrorist attack and link to radical Islam.

“Omar’s grotesque trivialization of a national tragedy amounts to an explicit denial of 9/11 — a desecration of all the lives erased that awful day,” Ahmed blasted. “This denial is inexplicable unless she has strong and covert Islamist sympathies.”

She said that trivialization was particularly insulting to her as a medical doctor, who continues to see the real-world impact of that Islamic terrorist attack on the people of New York.

“I see the burden of Sept. 11 on a regular basis, treating brave and selfless first responders who still suffer from complex sleep disorders — including post-traumatic stress — that I specialize in treating,” Ahmed explained. “In her dismissal of Sept. 11, Omar callously erased the deep suffering of every survivor and family I attend, and everyone else still impacted by the terrorist attacks,” she added.

She went on to point out that people like Omar seem to be using their Islamic backgrounds to gain victimhood points, but that this narrative falls apart.

“The greatest obscenity in the lie that Omar pedals is that she — along with millions of other Muslims in America — is somehow victimized,” Ahmed wrote. “Do not believe this.”There are two big points here. The first, of course, is that Qanta Ahmed is right. It’s shocking for any American — regardless of their religion — to downplay or sugarcoat what happened on September 11, but even more alarming when it’s a U.S. elected official doing it.

And that’s the second, perhaps larger point: The left has veered so far from the mainstream that one of their celebrated voices is now flirting dangerously close to terrorism denial.

The fact that we’re at that point — and that so many liberals refuse to call out Omar — is incredibleThat’s before even discussing the bigoted references and stereotypes parroted by Omar in the past. Where were the voices of American liberals then? In the case of Nancy Pelosi, they were making bizarre excusesabout how one of their own party members doesn’t know what her words mean.

It shouldn’t just be one brave Op-Ed piece by a successful and thoughtful Muslim American. It should be a chorus of voices of all backgrounds agreeing that the truth matters, and being honest about the reality of 9/11 is the least we as a nation can do.

It was feared that both religious artefacts would be lost as flames engulfed the medieval building, but Father Fournier made sure they were taken to safety. Four years ago he also comforted the wounded after the worst terrorist attack on Paris this century when 89 people were massacred at the Eagles of Death Metal concert in 2015. During his time as an army chaplain, Father Fournier, survived an ambush in which 10 soldiers were killed.

Etienne Loraillere, an editor for France's KTO Catholic television network, said Father Fournier 'went with the firefighters into Notre Dame Cathedral to save the Crown of Thorns and the Blessed Sacrament'. This was confirmed by an emergency services source who said: 'Father Fournier is an absolute hero. 'He showed no fear at all as he made straight for the relics inside the Cathedral, and made sure they were saved. He deals with life and death every day, and shows no fear.'

The blaze erupted in the medieval UNESCO world heritage landmark in the French capital on Monday, sending its spire and roof crashing to the ground as flames and clouds of smoke billowed into the sky. One of the cathedral's most precious objects, the Crown of Thorns is purported to have been worn by Jesus Christ on the cross when he was crucified. Records of its existence begin in the sixth century AD, when it is believed to have been kept in Jerusalem by Christians. During the Crusades in 1238, the Latin Emperor of Constantinople gave it to King Louis IX to win his support and try and preserve his crumbling empire. Although the crown itself was saved from the fire last night, a small fragment of the it had been kept in the spire and is therefore believed to have burned to ashes. The fire, which at one point threatened the entire edifice, was brought under control early on Tuesday about nine hours after it broke out.

Father Fournier rushed inside the Bataclan music venue in Paris on November 13 2015, when ISIS militants murdered 89 people using guns and explosives. The modest chaplain prayed over the dead, and comforted those who were injured or had lost loved ones. 'I gave collective absolution, as the Catholic Church authorises me,' father Fournier said at the time. Father Fournier, who is in his 50s, started his career as Catholic priest in Germany, and then moved to the Sarthe department of France. He joined the armed forces diocese in 2004, spending seven years working with the army all over the world. In Afghanistan he was involved in an ambush in which 10 soldiers were killed. Father Fournier said: 'On my first trip to Afghanistan, I was seized by fear – everything I saw could potentially be dangerous, as we had learned during training courses.'
