Schumer: Secret Service director must testify about Mar-A-Lago vulnerabilities

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday called on outgoing Secret Service Director Randolph Alles to testify about potential security vulnerabilities at Mar-A-Lago after a Chinese woman was arrested trying to enter the property with malware.

“The outgoing Secret Service director must testify before Congress as soon as possible about the potential security vulnerabilities at Mar-a-Lago involving a Chinese national arrested with malware, and other counterintelligence and national security threats," Schumer said in a statement.

"The public and Congress need to know the extent to which adversarial governments — like China — and their agents are attempting to gain access to, or conduct electronic surveillance on, conversations or other information regarding national security at President Trump’s properties," he added.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said earlier Monday that President Trump is removing Alles from his position as director of the Secret Service, adding that he will be "leaving shortly." His successor, James Murray, is expected to take over the position starting in May.

Schumer's statement comes after Yujing Zhang, a Chinese national, was arrested as she tried to enter Mar-A-Lago's pool. Federal prosecutors alleged in a filing last week that she entered the club with a thumb drive containing malicious software and multiple passports.

Federal prosecutors added at a hearing in Florida on Monday that she also had multiple USB drives, thousands of dollars in cash, a second cellphone and five SIM cards.

The Miami Herald reported that federal authorities are probing possible Chinese spying targeting Mar-a-Lago, Trump's private club in Palm Beach, Fla., including looking into Zhang.

But Trump downplayed concerns about security on the propriety last week, saying they had "very good control."

Colorado, Alabama and California emerge as favorites for Space Command headquarters: report

The Air Force is zeroing in on military bases to potentially house President Trump’s proposed U.S. Space Command, with the short list of contenders located in Colorado, Alabama and California, according to CNN.

An Air Force memorandum obtained by the network identified six potential bases, four in Colorado and the other two in California and Alabama, according to CNN. While the memo indicated the findings were approved by Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, an Air Force spokesperson told the network that Air Force personnel have not yet sent a list of base candidates to Wilson.

The memo puts the “projected manpower” for the base at 1,450 personnel, including 50 contractors, 827 civilians, 183 enlisted personnel and 390 officers, according to CNN. About 350 of the personnel would come from the existing Joint Force Space Component Command, currently part of U.S. Strategic Command.

The reported finalists are Colorado's Buckley Air Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Peterson Air Force Base and Schriever Air Force Base, the Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Alabama and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

“Placing United States Space Command on a Department of Defense space installation will align the command with critical space force expertise and provide resident military, civilian, and commercial space manpower for United States Space Command recruiting and retention,” a document attached to the memo said, according to CNN.

The Senate Armed Services committee is set to hold its first hearing on Trump’s Space Force proposal this week.

“A coherent space strategy is an integral part of our National Defense Strategy,” committee Chairman James Inhofe (R-Okla.) said in a statement. “I look forward to hearing from Pentagon leadership about what they see as the necessary capabilities of a space force, the costs and benefits associated with their solutions, and what our full range of options are.”

Investigators are still trying to determine the nature of the malware Zhang allegedly brought into the club, the sources told the Herald. It is not clear how much of a threat the malware posed and whether it was intended to gather information at the president’s club or possibly to destroy an existing network or program.

Secret Service agent Samuel Ivanovich, who interviewed Zhang on the day of her arrest, testified at the hearing. He stated that when another agent put Zhang’s thumb-drive into his computer, it immediately began to install files, a “very out-of-the-ordinary” event that he had never seen happen before during this kind of analysis. The agent had to immediately stop the analysis to halt any further corruption of his computer, Ivanovich said. The analysis is ongoing but still inconclusive, he testified.

Zhang entered the country through Newark Liberty International Airport on a tourist visa on March 28, according to prosecutors. The U.S. State Department has since revoked her visa and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has a detainer on her, Garcia said. During a hearing last week, Zhang told the judge that she typically brings cash with her on trips to the United States but did not indicate that she had several thousand dollars. She had previously visited the United States on at least two occasions , in July 2016 and January 2017.

Zhang was arrested March 30 after trying to enter Mar-a-Lago shortly after noon.

She got past an initial Secret Service checkpoint by saying she wished to use the pool, according to a criminal complaint. Mar-a-Lago staff thought she was related to a club member. But a receptionist grew suspicious after Zhang said she had come to attend a “United Nations Friendship Event” between China and the United States. No event by that name was scheduled for that day. Zhang may have miscommunicated the name of the event she wished to attend: The Herald has reported that a Chinese national named Charles Lee runs a business promoting events at Mar-a-Lago under the auspices of a group called the United Nations Chinese Friendship Association, which has no actual connection to the U.N. Lee worked to advertise the events on Chinese-language social media with Li “Cindy” Yang, the South Florida massage-parlor owner who ran a separate business that promised Chinese clients photos and meetings with Trump.

Yang had promoted events scheduled for Mar-a-Lago on the day Zhang showed up, including a “Safari Night” charity gala. But the functions had been canceled after the Herald first reported on Yang’s access-selling business last month, including a selfie she took with Trump.

Prosecutors said there was no evidence Zhang had any communication with a man named Charles. Nor was there any indication that the “United Nations” event existed, Garcia said, adding that the real event that night had been canceled. The group promoting it had not advertised it as any kind of United Nations event, he said. In fact, the organization had taken the site down weeks before, he said. (The website for Yang’s company, GY U.S. Investments, had been taken down after reporting from the Herald and other news organizations in March.)

Adler, Zhang’s attorney, confirmed that “Charles” was Charles Lee. He said Zhang had paid $20,000 to a Beijing-based company on Feb. 19. The wire transfer appears to have been payment for a travel package that would have included entrance into Safari Night. In addition, the defense entered a Herald article into evidence, pointing to the newspaper’s reporting that Lee piggybacked off of Mar-a-Lago events promoted by Yang and bundled them into larger packages he sold to Chinese buyers hoping to meet Trump or members of his family. Adler said he believed that is what Zhang paid for.

Adler also seemed to try to poke holes in the government’s case that Zhang had lied to the Secret Service and Mar-a-Lago security to gain access to the club. He asked Ivanovich, the Secret Service agent, if she had given a “definitive answer” that she was related to the club member.

“No, she did not,” Ivanovich said on the witness stand.

The agent also said he conducted a four-and-a-half hour interview with Zhang at the Secret Service office in West Palm Beach. There was only video but no audio recording because Ivanovich said he did not realize the audio was not working.

The investigation had originally focused on other Chinese nationals doing business in South Florida or traveling to the region. A spokeswoman for Yang said she has done nothing wrong, has not been contacted by federal authorities and did not know Zhang, the alleged Mar-a-Lago intruder.

Trump was in South Florida during the security breach but was golfing away from Mar-a-Lago. Last week he called the incident a “fluke.” But Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBS News it could be an example of “the threat that China poses, the efforts they’re making inside the United States, not only against government officials but more broadly.”

Prior to her arrest, Zhang stayed at the Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, about two miles up the road from the president’s club. The pastel-colored boutique hotel hosts high-end clientele, including Meryl Streep, who stayed the weekend after Zhang’s arrest, according to guests.

In an initial court appearance last week, she told a judge that she owned a $1.3 million home in China and drove a BMW, saying she worked as an investor and consultant in Shanghai. Zhang’s arraignment — where the charges against her will be presented — is scheduled for Monday, April 15.

Dutch F-16 makes emergency landing after plane shoots itself

A Dutch F-16 fighter jet flying a training exercise over the Netherlands scored a direct hit — on itself — when the pilot fired the aircraft’s 20mm rotary cannon.

Sometimes, even inanimate objects will do anything to get out of training.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force pilot was able to make an emergency landing at Leeuwarden Air Base after the plan suffered “considerable damage,” according to a report from Dutch state media.

At least one round ripped through the jet’s exterior, the report said, while munition fragments were also found in the aircraft’s engine.

“This is a serious incident," Wim Bagerbos, inspector general at the Netherlands Department of Defense, told Dutch media.

“We therefore want to fully investigate what happened and how we would be able to avoid this in future.”

U.S. aviators, of late, have dealt with a boon of aircraft mishaps, most notably incidents involving mid-air oxygen system failures resulting in a spike of reported physiological episodes.

But a plane firing on itself, especially with its own autocannon, is almost unheard of — and impossible.

Thomas W. Attridge Jr. became the first pilot to do so in September 1956 when, flying as a test pilot for Grumman, the 33-year-old former Navy officer shot down his own F11F-1 Tiger, similar to the variant used by the Blue Angels during the 1960s.

At an altitude of 20,000 feet, Attridge entered into a dive while firing the Tiger’s 20mm rotary cannon.

Continuing the dive all the way to 7,000 feet, Attridge exhausted the gun’s ammunition before the plane was hit by what he presumed to be a bird strike.

Before long, however, the engine began to fail, and his emergency return to the Grumman airstrip was cut short as he crashed through a thicket of trees just short of the runway.

Attridge would survive the crash, with numerous broken bones, and go on to work on the Apollo Lunar Module.

The investigation into his crash found that the rounds he fired during the rapid descent experienced enough drag to drastically slow their velocity.

As the plane’s acceleration increased, it managed to gain on its own rounds before miraculously connecting in mid-air.

No definitive explanation for the Dutch F-16 mishap has been provided, but in any event, an American-made plane has made history once again.

An investigation remains ongoing.

First, it’s important to examine the economic news out this week. On Thursday, we found out US jobless claims fell to 49 year lows, below all forecasts. The last time this few Americans were out of work was 1969- the year man first landed on the moon.

Then on Friday, the Labor Dept. reported the US economy added 196,000 jobs in March, far exceeding expectations. The Trump economy is booming. As usual, capitalism is a roaring success.

Here’s are important questions: Who could possibly be angry at these results? Who could deny the economy is booming? Who would desperately demand a change?

Today’s Democrat Party hates these results. They desperately demand a dramatic change in course. Today’s Democrat Party is turning towards the darkest political philosophy in history. Remember, the problem isn’t just the misery and unimaginable poverty caused by socialism and communism. During the 20th century about 100 million souls were murdered in the name of communism.

Even liberal publication “The Atlantic” ran a story days ago titled, “The Democratic Party is Radicalizing.” They listed what today’s leading Democrats stand for…

A major motivation for migrants to make the dangerous trek across Mexico has been the U.S. media frenzy over child separation. Instigated from the Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” policy, the directive forced thousands of children to be separated from their families and invoked outrage from progressive groups. After President Donald Trump ended the separations by executive order, locals in Central America took it as a sign that, if one arrives with a child, they are more likely able to stay.

“We know people who left just last month and are already in the United States and working,” Agustín Marcos, a 44-year-old Guatemalan citizen who is considering leaving, said to The Guardian. It’s not only cheaper if he brings his daughter, according to Marcos, but he feels it will increase his chances of getting into the U.S.

“On my own, [the smugglers will] charge me $11,700, but if I go with her, it’s $5,200 for both of us and it’ll be easier to get in,” he said.

The One Jewish State Solution

He wants them to vote Likud on Tuesday rather than ‘wasting’ their vote on a small ultra-right party or another.

There is obviously a big difference between the one-state call that has been pushed by Palestinian solidarity activists and Netanyahu’s politics of annexation. While Palestinian rights advocates are referring to one democratic state, Netanyahu is not committed to democracy at all. He is solely faithful to the Jewish population and what he offers in practice is a ‘One Jewish State Solution.’ After all, Israel defines itself as ‘the Jewish State’ and it is there to serve one people while denying others their most elementary rights. Israel, as we know, is not a state of its citizens, it is a state of its Jewish citizens. By the time Israel comes to term with its sin and transcends into a state of its citizens regardless of their race, ethnicity or religious belief it will be renamed. It may as well be called Palestine.

Trump replaces Secret Service director

President Trump is removing U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles from his position.

“United States Secret Service director Randolph 'Tex' Alles has done a great job at the agency over the last two years, and the President is thankful for his over 40 years of service to the country," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement Monday. "Mr. Alles will be leaving shortly and President Trump has selected James M. Murray, a career member of the [United States Secret Service], to take over as director beginning in May.”

CNN first reported that Trump was firing Alles, citing multiple administration officials.

Alles reports directly to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, who resigned Sunday effective April 10, reportedly due to her resistance against White House directives to resume separating migrant children from their families.

The Secret Service recently came under scrutiny for its handling of an incident in which a Chinese national was allowed to enter President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club. The woman, who alternately claimed to be there to swim and attend an event for Chinese-American business leaders, was eventually determined to be carrying two Chinese passports and a device containing malware.

The Secret Service and White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.

An administration official told CNN that Alles’s firing was part of a “purge” at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) following Nielsen’s resignation, saying Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Frances Cissna and the Office of the General Counsel’s John Mitnick would also likely depart soon.

Top Trump adviser Stephen Miller, an immigration hard-liner, has become Trump’s point man on immigration and border policy in recent weeks and is determined to replace DHS leadership with likeminded officials, according to the official.

The Associated Press, however, reported that Alles's departure is "unrelated" to other exits from DHS.
