Silicon Valley Bank: What comes next?

For those who've read this blog before, you may noticethe headline slide has changed from SVB on Wine, to Rob McMillan on Wine. I know I don't need to explain that change.

This is a horrible message for me to have to write. I was asked to stay silent the past few days by SVB but now that the die is cast, I thought I should sit down and share what I know.

To start, my employer formerly known as Silicon Valley Bank, no longer exists. I'm still processing the whole thing as are most people associated with the bank.

On Friday morning, clients, employees, bank suppliers and shareholders all awoke to the same news: SVB has been taken over by the FDIC. For everyone involved, there is a range of emotions to process; fear, anxiety, anger and so much more. I'm personally cycling through all of the same emotions.

In the space of 48 hours, SVB went from being a very viable banking organization with sound metrics by all regulatory measures, to being out of business. Investors lost billions, clients had their deposit accounts frozen, and the FDIC halted all banking transactions to stop the panic-driven loss of cash.

How could that have happened? I never thought I'd see an old-fashioned run on the bank as portrayed in "It's a Wonderful Life," let alone find me in the middle of a collapse, but that's the reality. The situation didn't turn out like the movie.

The wine industry had nothing to do with this. This event was an unnecessary fear-based collapse that the Venture Capital industry participated in, and is having second thoughts about. Six hundred thirty six VCs are trying to make their voices heard on this disturbing collapse - albeit a little late.

This incident is going to go down in infamy with Continental Illinois. That was the last bank I recall that failed over a run on deposits. While the Washington Mutual failure is the largest ever bank failure, that bank collapsed over loan problems. That is the normal path to a bank failure and you typically see the signs of that very early. Those problems didn't exist at SVB. The loan portfolio was performing well. Actually, as far as I could tell, the whole business was doing well. Today, in the blink of an eye this is the second-largest bank failure in the history of the US. It's hard to fathom.

Clients

I've taken countless calls from clients who want more information, want to better know what happened, or just want to talk to me. Most it seems want to know how I'm doing too, and I sincerely appreciate the good wishes and prayers. Some though have been irritated or angry, and I completely understand. That's OK. This isn't fair. The frustration is justified.

For the moment, we are told by the press release from the FDIC that banking activities will resume no later than Monday, March 13, including on-line banking and other services. Opening is a start, but that doesn't begin to solve client issues with banking.

[Monday Update: The bank is open, processing loan advances, and fully operational, albeit a little slower than clients expect. The depositors now have unlimited insurance from the US Government. So in a somewhat ironic turn, SVB now is the safest bank for deposits in the US)

The Industry

Many have asked me about the reports that I write, particularly the State of the Industry, but also all the benchmarking data I've been able to provide for the past 20 years for free. I've received many calls and emails from people telling me how they depend on the information to feel informed and make decisions in their business. Numerous universities around the world use this information too, and some have asked me if that is going to continue.

Unless the Wine Division is working under a different brand in the next week or so, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that I won't be able to produce Direct to Consumer benchmarking information this year. That planning was already well underway with the survey release planned for the end of this month.

The next area of information I've used is the bank's database of winery financial statements we call Peer Group Analysis (PGA). That information doesn't exist anywhere else. I'm not sure what will happen to that database. If the bank has a buyer, the platform will go to that buyer to decide what to do, but the likelihood is that information will be lost sadly.

The State of the Industry Report is of course up in the air as well. I don't traditionally start until October so there is a little more time there. Many people want to see that continue, but I'll have to see how things play out. While SVB has done these reports gratis, there is a significant cost to produce them and logistics would have to be covered - analysis, writing, formatting, design. There is a lot that goes into the production of the report.

[Monday Update: The outpouring of support for the work we do on behalf of the wine industry has been pretty surprising to me; not so much that people appreciate what we do, but the literally hundreds of messages I've received on the topic.

There are any number of solutions starting to crystalize, from a consortium of the industry providing funding for this activity, starting a non-profit, and some stand-alone companies who want to take on this work under their brand. Nothing can be decided at this point until after we get through the FDIC sales process. But the outpouring of support for the effort is going to be helpful in discussions with an acquirer when we discuss continuing these efforts.]

The Employees

The employees were told Friday night March 10th by the FDIC that they would be offered jobs at 1.5 times their previous base salary for 45 days. The implied hope is the bank will reopen under the banner of a new organization. I'm sure those discussions are underway, otherwise, there wouldn't be much need to try and keep all of the staff, but there are no guarantees there. I trust that the bank will indeed open under the FDIC ownership on Monday though.

This bank collapse obviously impacts all the employees who in most cases were shareholders. Some had their life savings wiped out, and now are dealing with a threat to their day-to-day living. But as we've each been processing our own grief, everyone in the Wine Division is functioning professionally and trying and take care of our clients. We don't have all of our tools available and not having complete information is a huge frustration for everyone.

What comes next?

The culture here at Silicon Valley Bank was amazing and it's a real loss for everyone. I've never been around such a truly positive and creative group of men and women. We were able to do things other banks couldn't dream of, and focus on finding ways to help our clients and the industry evolve and succeed, while quietly giving back hundreds of millions for causes important to us like farmworker housing for instance.

Each employee is going to have choices to make now about what comes next if there is no buyer forthcoming. I can say with confidence that every employee in the Wine Division of the bank is remarkable and will be a great hire for any banking institution. Where will everyone land? Some will stay in the banking business and take on different roles or industries. Some will find spots in different wine banks that will no doubt be anxious to have SVB clients.

[Monday Update: We've been listening to parties interested in buying the full Wine Division. Thus far there are 7 parties, three of which are banks who have reached out. We have no authority to act in these discussions, but we are listening, talking, and directing them to the FDIC.)

What am I going to do? I really don't know yet. I've been listening to people who are coming up with interesting options. But, I'm going to take a little time to see if I can make a decision that will be a benefit to the industry and other of my colleagues. If something does pop up, that's where you'll find me next.

I Finally Understand Why We Hate Russia

Almost a year ago I wrote a post asking why are our globalist elites so obsessed with Russia? I saw weird things happening around me, but didn’t answer my own question. Now I do know.

What’s happening right now is the single most horrifying thing I have ever seen. It’s even worse than the Islamophobia after the Sept. 11 attacks. That was wrong, but at least there was a reasonable provocation for it. We had been directly attacked, and in a terrible way. It was natural for us to feel angry, and would have been weird if we didn’t.But why now?Why are Americans feeling this overwhelming,burning rage and bloodlustover a regional border dispute on the other side of the world? Only one in six Americans can find Ukraine on a map.

This is the first time in my life I have watched the Russians fight a protracted conventional war, and I have immersed myself in both sides of the story, not just ours. At the same time, I have watched almost every person I have ever knownexplode into a fit of irrational rageand russophobia, and completely overnight.

Why do wecompulsively travel to the other side of the world topick fightswith Russia? And when Russia gets into fights of her own, why do we always take the other side, even when the other side is evil? And why is the other side always evil? Not sometimes evil.Always evil.

Our allies against Russia are alwaysnazis, terrorists, religious extremists, and drug dealers. There is not even one exception to this rule.

In 1853, Russia was ill-prepared for the Crimean War. That’s mostly because they weren’t expecting it. They were astonished that the “collectiveWest” would side with a crumbling, corrupt Islamic empireand wage total war against fellow Christians, killing hundreds of thousands of them. Think of how different the world might be if the West hadn’t committed this crime. With a partitioned, stabilized Middle East and Balkans, there would have been no Armenian genocide. None of the other wars that broke out during and after the Ottoman Empire’s collapse would have happened. In hindsight, Russians shouldn’t have been surprised, because that’s the pattern the West has followed ever since.

• In the 1940s, the West funded Hitler against Russia. Then in the late 1940s, the West allied with nazis to form NATO, just to prove that the first time wasn’t a fluke.

• In the 1980s, the West sided with Afghan terrorists and drug dealers against Russia.

• In the 1990s, the West sided with Albanian terrorists and drug dealers against the Serbs (who are almost the same thing as Russians).

• In the 2010s, the West sided with ISIS and Kurdish death squads against Syria’s secular democratic government, and (coincidentally) a close Russian ally. If you think I’m being unfair, can you think of even one ally of the West against Russia who wasn’t a terrorist, a drug dealer, a nazi, or all of the above?

Now, Ukraine. Thecorruption capital of the planet, the poorest, most backwards nation in Europe, a government full of nazis, drug dealers, and assorted other scumbags. Now that Russia has decided to wage open warfare against Ukraine,suddenlyUkrainian neo-nazi drug dealers are the good guys?Why?

And the West’s reaction to the Ukrainian war is nothing short of total, irrational hatred and panic. Let’s be honest with ourselves. This has nothing to do with Ukraine. That little neo-nazi haven is just aproxy for the real warbetween Russia and the West….

Sorry, I still haven’t answered the question. Why do we hate Russia so much? Life imitates art, and art imitates life. We can find the answer in our own movies. Look at how many of the recent entries are about our war with Russia. Amazon’s Without Remorse and theJack Ryan series are two of the more extreme examples. These are not nice stories, andthey’re somehow even more nihilistic and divorced from moralitythan the original Tom Clancy books they’re based on.

Even in our fictional fantasies,we depict ourselvescommitting terrorism and indiscriminate violence against innocent people. Worse, we do it without reason and incompetently. In Jack Ryan, CIA thugs torture people in Yemen. In Without Remorse, a special forces team carries out a botched terrorist raid on Russian soil, killing dozens of innocent people.We don’t even pretend to be the good guys. We justify our atrocities by assuring ourselves that “both sides are equally bad.” Without Remorse even has a monologue about “pawns and patriots.” Ah, I see, the blind man said. Us doing bad things is okay, because we show the Russians also doing bad things that we made up. Makes sense.

It’s not possible to debunk every single bit of fake news about Russian “atrocities” in Ukraine, there’s just too much of it. So here’s a rule of thumb that should pretty much always work.If the story involves Russians doing a cartoonishly evil thingwith no plausible motive or any logical benefit they could ever gain from it – like blowing up maternity wards for no reason – thenit’s probably bullshit.See? Easy. By the way, if you don’t want the enemy to shoot at hospital rooms, then maybe you should stop putting soldiers and weapons in them. It’s truly not hard.

And it’s not just Ukraine.We make up silly bullshit storiesabout every Russian war. Like putting bombs inside children’s toys scattered around Afghanistan. Really? Why would the Russians want to do that? I have to really ask an obvious question now. Do our propagandists think that’s a reasonable tactic because we did it at some point?

Russian and Soviet stories are not like ours, by the way.

Speaking of propaganda, I shared this meme to Facebook shortly after the Russian army visited. Someone replied with this comment: Interesting how both of these statements are not true

Interesting, but that wasn’t my point, and I’m worried that no one understood what my point was. Propaganda isn’t good or bad, it’s just a tool. It’s information, andit reveals something about the person saying it. If someone spouts good, positive messages, then that’s probably what he believes. If someone spouts cruel and horrible messages, then what are we supposed to think of him?

The problem with morality is that we aren’t born with it. Morality has to be taught. Our stories have taught us to be bad and cruel for so long we don’t know how to be any other way. It’s sad, and it’s also deliberate. That’s what our elites want us to think, andwill pay any price to keep that illusion over our heads.

So I’ll finally answer the question. Why does the West hate Russia?Our elites hate Russiabecause she poses an existential, ideological threat to our world order. Russia represents the idea thathuman beings don’t have to be evil. There is an alternative to being evil, and it’s good to not be evil. That is why our elites hate Russia, and are determined to destroy her at any cost, even at the risk of utterly destroying our own civilizations in the process.

Credit Suisse CDS Reach Crisis Levels as Banks Rush to Buy Protection

The cost of credit derivatives linked to Credit Suisse Group AG are blowing out to levels reminiscent of the financial panic of 2008 after the lender’s biggest shareholder said it doesn’t want to boost its stake.

The moves are being exacerbated by banks rushing to buy protection against a possible default by the Zurich-based firm to reduce their counterparty risk on trades, according to people with knowledge of the matter. In a chaotic day of trading, quotes for one-year credit default swaps were considerably more expensive than the offers for longer durations as lenders tried to give themselves a near-term shield from their exposure to the lender, the people said. Bid-ask spreads were as much as 10 points apart upfront they said, asking not to be named because they aren’t authorized to speak publicly. So far, the moves are limited to Credit Suisse and haven’t spread to other lenders. The bank declined to comment. Banks buy and sell derivative contracts and other instruments constantly, meaning they assume counterparty risk when they take the other side of a trade. When the default risk of one of the lenders increases, it can lead to mark-to-market losses known as a credit valuation adjustment even if the lender does not default. “CVA desks need to hedge counterparty risk,” said Jochen Felsenheimer, a portfolio manager at XAIA Investment. “Assuming they have been hedged at the end of 2022, they still have to hedge additionally on recently opened trades and against mark-to-market losses.” Even if the hedging is limited in size, it has a dramatic impact on prices because of thin volumes, he added. The spike in CDS quotes highlights the jitters among bankers and money managers after the failure of Silicon Valley Bank last week sparked concerns about potential contagion in the financial system. Credit Suisse’s shares and bonds plunged after the chairman of Saudi National Bank made the comments about the shareholding, which stands at just under 10%.

The Zurich-based lender, which is in the middle of a complex three-year restructuring, has been struggling to contain deposit outflows. While the bank has insisted that its financial position is sound, the spiking CDS prices are causing turmoil in the market. Similar moves were seen in the short-term credit derivatives linked to banks such as Morgan Stanley in the aftermath of the Lehman Brothers collapse in September 2008. Credit-default swaps on Credit Suisse covered a net notional of $2.06 billion of debt as of Friday, a slight increase from previous weeks, according to the latest available report from the Depository Trust & Clearing Corp. Data for this week isn’t available.

Veteran US senator urges downing Russian warplanes

President Reagan would be doing it right now, after the loss of a Reaper UAV over the Black Sea, Lindsey Graham claims

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has suggested opening fire on Russian fighter jets that intercept US drones, after one such encounter ended with an MQ-9 Reaper plunging into the Black Sea on Tuesday.

“What would Ronald Reagan do right now? He would start shooting Russian planes down, if they were threatening our assets,” the veteran hawk told Fox News, while commenting on the incident.

The Pentagon has accused Russian military pilots of conducting unsafe air maneuvers near the drone, which it claimed was on a surveillance mission near Crimea. At one point a Su-27 allegedly hit the Reaper’s propeller, causing it to ditch in the sea.

The Russian Defense Ministry has denied reports of a collision, and claimed the drone stalled after executing a drastic maneuver. Moscow’s Ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, suggested that American drones that can carry weapons have no business flying near Russian borders.

Graham attributed the encounter to purported weakness shown by President Joe Biden, who the senator described as “a deer in the headlights.” He concluded that the problem started with the pullout of troops in Afghanistan in 2021, will lead to new conflicts.

“If Putin gets away with this, there goes Taiwan. The two are connected,” Graham claimed, referring to the self-administered Chinese territory, which President Biden has pledged to defend militarily, should China try to send military in.

Beijing has said its policy is to pursue peaceful reunification with Taiwan, but that it could resort to military force, should the island’s government attempt to formally declare independence. The Chinese government has alleged that some in Washington are encouraging such an outcome.

Ukraine left out of 'unprecedented' World Cup announcement

Spain and Portugal have been joined by Morocco, according to a statement from the North African country's king

Morocco has announced that it’s joining Spain and Portugal’s bid to stage the 2030 FIFA World Cup, apparentlyreplacing Ukrainein the trio of potential hosts. (Uh oh, first the Oscars and now the World Cup. Brace yourselves for ahissy fitfrom Zelensky and Ukraine. I think what started this was Zelensky said American sons and daughters would be required to fight and die in Ukraine!)

Madrid and Lisbon filed their joint candidacy in 2021, and last October added Kiev to their bid, saying they wanted to “give hope” to the Ukrainians amid the conflict with Russia. Back then, Portuguese Football Federation chief Fernando Gomes explained that the gesture was a way to “contribute through the power of football to the recovery of a country undergoing reconstruction.”

However, on Wednesday, Morocco’s Sports Minister Chakib Benmoussa read out a message fromMoroccan King Mohammed VIin Rwanda’s capital Kigali, where FIFA is hosting its 73rd congress.

“The Kingdom of Morocco has decided, together with Spain and Portugal, to present a joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup,” the message read.

“This joint bid, which is unprecedented in football history, will bring together Africa and Europe, the northern and southern Mediterranean, and the African, Arab and Euro-Mediterranean worlds,” the king said.

The royal message did not mention Ukraine, so it remainsunclear whether Kiev has been excusedfrom the bid altogether, or if the application will be expanded to four nations.

When asked to comment on the announcement from Rabat, a spokesman for the Spanish Football Association said the country’s football chief will meet with his Portuguese and Moroccan counterparts later on Wednesday.

“The presidents will announce any news regarding the candidacy for the 2030 World Cup in Kigali,” the spokesman clarified. He did not mention Ukraine’s potential involvement.

The Moroccan football squad made huge waves at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar a few months ago, knocking out Spain and Portugal in the playoffs to become the first African country to reach the semifinals.

Spain is only separated from Morocco by the Strait of Gibraltar, while the distance between Ukraine and the Iberian Peninsula, where both Spain and Portugal are located, is several thousand kilometers.

The other contenders to host the World Cup in seven years are a joint Latin American bid from Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Paraguay, and another transcontinental application from Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Egypt.

AUKUS deal ‘worst in history’ – former Australian PM

Buying US-designed nuclear submarines to be “sunk” near China is no way to defend the country, Paul Keating said

Former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating has fired a broadside against the current government for its endorsement of the AUKUS security bloc and the purchase of American submarines. It doesn’t help protect the country anddrags it into the US attempt to preserve its hegemonyby containing China, he has argued.

Keating, who chaired the Australian government in the 1990s, reiterated his negative view of the purchase of Virginia-class nuclear-powered boats in a lengthy rebuke this week. He branded it the “worst international decision” by an Australian Labor government since conscription in World War I. Speaking to journalists from the National Press Club of Australia on Wednesday to make the case for his position, he added “it must be the worst deal in all history.”

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese formally confirmed the acquisition on Monday during a visit to California, where he and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were hosted at a naval base by US President Joe Biden. The plan was first announced in 2021, with Keating blasting the then-Conservative government in Canberra.

Figures in the British government were “looking around for suckers,” the famously acerbic Aussie politician said of the prelude to the announcement two years ago. “And they found – whoo! – here is a bunch of accommodating people in Australia.” The Albanese cabinet was just as eager to push the deal forward, he added.

The Australian Royal Navy is buying up tofive attack submarinesfrom the US and possibly building three more with the UK’s help. The deal is estimated to cost 360 billion Australian dollars ($240bn).

With that investment, Australia could have40 to 50 domestically-built Collins-classdiesel-electric submarines instead, Keating suggested.

A larger fleet would be far better at protecting Australia from a possible invasion, which would require an “armada of troops ships”reaching its coast, he believes. Meanwhile, the nuclear subs would be sent to the Chinese coast to potentially take part in a US-Chinese conflict, the former prime minister suggested.

“It’s a strange way to defend Australia to have your submarines sunk on the Chinese continental shelf chasing Chinese submarines,” Keating mused.

“We are part of a [US] containment policy against China,” he added. “It’s about one matter only: the maintenance ofUS strategic hegemony in Southeast Asia.”

Seymour Hersh shares concerns about what US could do next in Ukraine conflict

Washington could clash with Moscow’s forces if Kiev starts to lose, the veteran journalist argues

The United States could get directly involved in the Ukraine conflict if it sees that Kiev’s forces are on the back foot, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Seymour Hersh suggested on Tuesday.

Speaking at an event in Washington, DC hosted by the Committee for the Republic, a non-profit organization, Hersh noted that theUS “did stupid things” during the Vietnam War, and suggested that Washington could “start doing something else” in the Ukraine conflict.

“I don’t know what happens if it goes bad for Ukraine, you have all this manpower,” he said, pointing out that the US hasdispatched units of its 82nd and 101st elite airborne divisionsclose to the Ukrainian border, while “a lot of weapons and arms are coming” to Europe.

“I’m told the game is going to be: this is NATO, we are supporting NATO in offensive operations against the Russians, which is not going to fool the world… It’s us fighting Russia,” Hersh stressed, without disclosing his sources.

According to Hersh, “the big deal” is that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to come to an agreement with the Ukrainian government. “The deal is demilitarize, and it’s going to be a no-go for us,” the journalist said, adding that theRussian leader “has not put in his main force yet” in the conflict.

Summing up the Ukraine conflict, Hersh argued that “we just may be kidding ourselves what’s going on there and what the results are going to be”.

He recalled the battle of Stalingrad during WWII, when Soviet troops suffered heavy losses but still emerged victorious. “Come on. Do we really want to mix up with those guys? I don’t think so,” the journalist added.

In February, Hersh released a bombshell report on last September’s Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipeline blasts, accusing Washington of orchestrating the attack. The White House denied responsibility. Last week, several Western media outlets claimed the culprits may have been linked to Ukraine. Moscow dismissed the reports as “a coordinated media hoax campaign.”

Russia has repeatedly voiced concerns about the eastward expansion of NATO and its involvement in the Ukraine conflict. Last month, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov stated thatNATO “is no longer acting as our conditional opponent, but as our enemy” as it conducts round-the-clock intelligence operations against Moscow and continues to supply Kiev with arms.
