US downed object over Alaska, White House, Pentagon say

White House Spokesman John Kirby announced Friday that the U.S. has downed an unidentified object over Alaska.

Kirby, who is the National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communication, said during a press briefing at the White House that the object, which was much smaller than the spy balloon shot down last week, was about the size of a small car.

The “high-altitude object” was brought down Friday afternoon on the northeast portion of Alaska near the Canadian border over water that is frozen, Kirby said during the briefing. The object was first seen by officials Thursday evening.

Chinese balloon: US shoots down balloon off SC coast; Navy, Coast Guard will lead recovery

Original report: The object was shot down at the order of President Joe Biden by a fighter jet, Kirby said, according to The New York Times.

“Out of an abundance of caution and at the recommendation of the Pentagon, President Biden ordered the military to down the object, and they did. And it came inside our territorial waters – and those waters right now are frozen – but inside territorial airspace and over territorial waters. Fighter aircraft assigned to US Northern Command took down the object within last hour,” Kirby said, according to CNN.

Spy balloon: What was in the sky above the US last week?

Kirby said the object posed a “reasonable threat” to the safety of civilian flights, The Associated Press reported.

Kirby said the latest object was flying about 40,000 feet above the ground, unlike the spy balloon that was flying much higher — 60,000 feet —as it flew over the U.S. last week.

Officials could not say if there was any surveillance equipment on the item shot down on Friday, the Times reported.

They are not sure where the device came from and if it was a military object, commercial or research device.

We do expect to be able to recover the debris since it fell not only within our territorial space, but on what we what believe is frozen water. China Balloon Had Western-Made Parts With English Writing, Lawmakers Told

(Bloomberg) – An alleged Chinese spy balloon that traversed the US had western-made components with English-language writing on them, members of Congress were told on Capitol Hill Thursday, people familiar with the matter said. Biden administration officials briefed lawmakers about the writing behind closed doors, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private information. The officials included representatives from the State and Defense Departments as well as the intelligence community. The presence of the components was described by several of the people, who declined to elaborate further on exactly which ones were Western-made. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the writing was discovered before the balloon was shot down Saturday or found in the wreckage afterward. Recovery operations for the balloon’s payload continued off the coast of South Carolina. A spokesperson for the National Security Council declined to comment. The State and Defense Departments didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Biden administration officials said earlier Thursday that US spy planes had managed to take high-resolution photos of the balloon as it traversed the US. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is combing through the debris, but FBI officials who briefed reporters on Thursday said the review is in its early stages and agents haven’t yet seen the balloon’s main payload. Senator Marco Rubio, the vice chair of the Intelligence Committee, said after a briefing for senators that one of the key advantages to using balloons instead of other aircraft is that they have the ability to stay on location for long periods of time and provide cheap, continuous intelligence. Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, said one question is whether US or other companies have been helping China build these balloons.

China has rejected allegations of spying, maintaining that the aircraft was a weather balloon that blew off course.

China’s Ministry of Defense said Thursday it has declined to talk with the US about the balloon because “the use of force violates international practice and sets a bad precedent,” according to a statement from spokesman Tan Kefei. “The US hasn’t created a proper atmosphere for dialogue,” he added, calling the downing of what China considers a civilian balloon “irresponsible.”

UN condemns executions of Russian POWs by Ukrainians

The UN human rights watchdog is aware of a new graphic video purportedly showing the execution of Russian POWs by Ukrainians and has raised the issue with Kiev

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is aware of recently-emerged footage apparently showing the execution of Russian soldiers who had surrendered by Ukrainian troops, a spokeswoman for the UN watchdog, Marta Hurtado, has said.

“We have raised concerns about the treatment of prisoners of war, including alleged killings of POWs by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense,” Hurtado told TASS in a statement on Friday.

The graphic video in question surfaced earlier this week, filmed by an armed individual speaking Ukrainian and demanding answers from three men in military uniforms lying on the ground. After failing to elicit a coherent response from them, the man shoots one of the men in the head multiple times at point blank range.

One of the men, lying motionless on the ground, also has visible blood around his head, apparently getting shot and killed before the video started. A fellow Ukrainian soldier appeared to try to reason with the gunman, pointing out that the third captive was holding a grenade. The killer briefly showed his face at the very end of the video, concluding it with an obscenity and ‘Glory to Ukraine’ slogan, which is commonly associated with World War II-era Nazi collaborators but is widely used in present-day Ukraine.

Additional footage seemingly filmed in the immediate aftermath of the incident showed the killer trying to provide excuses to justify his actions. The UN is aware of this footage as well, Hurtado said, adding that none of the excuses actually have merit.

“We are also aware of another video that has appeared on social media platforms that includes additional footage of the original incident and also appears to show a Ukrainian soldier confessing [to] the killing and trying to justify it by alleging that the victims refused to surrender or that they were part of the Wagner Group military and security contractors fighting on behalf of the Russian Federation,” the spokeswoman said. “These excuses do not provide justification for the soldier's actions under international humanitarian law.”

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the killing of unarmed soldiers who surrendered is a “widespread practice” by Kiev’s troops, and multiple incidents of this sort have occurred amid the ongoing conflict, with some of them published online by the killers themselves. The Russian Investigative Committee said on Thursday that the footage appeared to show the recent murder of three Russian POWs by “Ukrainian nationalists,” pledging to investigate further and identify the perpetrators.

Philadelphia Quaker school sex-ed teacher says 'porn literacy' necessary for students who are 'sexual beings' since birth

"Every single one of those kids is a sexual being," the teacher said. "They have been since birth, and at every age and stage, we can offer them age appropriate, transformative sexuality education."

Video footage has emerged on social media of the Sexuality Education Coordinator at an exclusive Pennsylvania private school saying that children are sexual beings from the moment they are born.

Al Vernacchio, who made the comments during an award presentation last August, has been the pre K - 12 sex-ed teacher at Friends' Central, a private Quaker school in Philadelphia, for twenty years.

In a clip of his speech shared on Twitter by parent rights advocate Meghan Brock, Vernacchio said he is responsible for the sexuality education of all the school's students, from three-year-olds in nursery school to the 12th graders who are turning 18 and preparing to leave high school.

"That's a huge range, but every single one of those kids is a sexual being," said Vernacchio. "They have been since birth, and at every age and stage, we can offer them age appropriate, transformative sexuality education."

Vernacchio then told the audience that it's not enough that he alone educates these young minds, but rather that it is the job of everyone to step up to the task.

"It's not enough that I teach them; we have to teach them" he said. "Part of my message today is that we all, no matter what else we do in life, need to find a way to be sexuality educators for the kids in our lives. If we don't step up, others will, and many of those others don't see wholeness and freedom the way we do."

Vernacchio advocated for children to be "porn-literate," and argued that children are exposed to porn, whether society likes it or not, so they might as well be taught the critical thinking necessary to understand its messages, according to an article in City Life magazine.

According to the the description of the Woodhull Freedom Foundation event from the group’s YouTube channel, in "a cultural moment where 'Don't Say Gay' and anti-trans bills are being advanced in state legislatures, and fundamental sexual rights – like access to safe abortion procedures – are being threatened, age-appropriate, value-informed, medically-accurate, progressive sexuality education can be a powerful tool for exploring issues of personal identity, body autonomy, pleasure equity, and sexual justice."

Vernacchio said one of the things to celebrate about today’s culture is that children have so many more options open to them beyond "simply whether they feel like a boy or a girl, or whether they identify as gay, straight or bisexual. Our understandings of both gender and orientation have greatly expanded in our culture."

He said that the ever-increasing list of identity labels children have to choose from allows young people "to find a more precise way to describe their own experience."

"What it's also brought about is greater latitude, and experimenting with different identities. It's not uncommon today for young people to try out different labels and different pronouns and different relationships in search of their truth."

Vernacchio did not mention how "experimenting with different identities" and trying out "different labels and pronouns" often results in children being chemically castrated and having healthy body parts amputated in pediatric gender clinics all over the U.S.

"The classroom has always been a place to spark wonder, imagination, transformation, and growth in young people. Good education leads learners out of oppression and into possibility," the event description read.

In 2021, Vernacchio and Friends' Central were awarded a $250,000 grant to launch a project called "Healthy Relationships and Consent Education," according to The Inquirer. The sex-ed teacher expanded the notion of consent to include any situation where we interact with another person's property, body, or reputation.

Vernacchio gave a TED Talk in 2012 that went viral in which he replaced the traditional baseball metaphor for sex that refers to "scoring" and "stealing bases," with a metaphor about ordering pizza which involves "shared pleasure, discussion and agreement, fulfillment and enjoyment."
