Republican Councilwoman Gunned Down Outside Her Home, Shot Dead In Targeted Attack

A local councilwoman in New Jersey was gunned down outside her home Wednesday evening. Sayreville Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour, a Republican, was found dead in her vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.

She was 30 years old. Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick said she was a “dedicated member of our Borough Council who was truly committed to serving all of our residents.” The young mother beat the sitting Democrat in the Borough of Sayreville in November 2021 in a stunning upset win. She was not up for reelection until 2024.

“This is an active and ongoing investigation anyone with information or surveillance footage of the area is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office 732-745-3477,” the prosecutor’s office said.

Detective Juan Rodriguez and Pastor Doctor Nelia Rodriguez said in online postings: “

“We are so heartbroken to announce that our friend, Councilwoman from Sayreville, part of our HRC (Human Relation Commission), our personal friend, a woman of God Eunice Dwumfour was murdered tonight in Sayreville.

“She was an amazing friend, a woman who loved God.

“We were just at our HRC meeting January 5th 2023 and I just saw her this morning at the store.

“I remember saying to her I see you at the HRC meeting tomorrow not knowing tonight was going to be the end of her life.

“I can’t stop crying. She was 30 years young and full of life.”

According to The New York Post:

The Republican councilwoman was found with multiple gunshot wounds, and pronounced dead at the scene, officials told the outlet.

Some locals told RLS Media that the gunman was spotted racing off to the Garden State Parkway, which edges the complex. No other details were given on possible identifying details or a weapon.

Dwumfour — who also preached for a Nigerian-based church group — appeared to be the intended target, authorities told the outlet, stressing that there was no obvious motive.

Sing Tao U.S. is a subsidiary of the Hong Kong-based Sing Tao News Corporation Ltd.

The newspaper is considered pro-Beijing.

The four U.S. campaigns spent advertising expenses at this Chinese-owned entity after the Department of Justice (DOJ) forced it to register as a Chinese foreign agent in August 2021.

China has increasingly come onto the U.S. radar as a main adversary, specifically in terms of competition and global defenses.

Beijing is growing more ire toward Washington with politicians' acknowledging the autonomy of the island nation of Taiwan, which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has long claimed as their territory.

To counter these U.S. claims, China has ramped up its military drills and operations in the South China Sea near the island.

More than half of the content of Sing Tao's U.S. operation is purchased from another Chinese company, Star Production (Shenzhen) Limited, according to Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) filings.

Sing Tao's parent company operates the oldest Chinese-language newspaper in Hong Kong and in June 2021 a majority stake was purchased by the daughter of a wealthy mainland China property developer, Axios previously reported.

Beyond the spike: Are T cell COVID-19 vaccines the future?

Current vaccines target the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. This protein mutates frequently, which could make currently available vaccines less effective.

Researchers in the United States recently investigated the effects of T cells that recognize a different protein in the virus — one that does not mutate as quickly as the spike protein.

T cells are a type of white blood cell that can ‘remember’ antigens for decades. Vaccines developed using this new approach may provide more lasting protection.

All current COVID-19 vaccines encourage the body to generate antibodies that target the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. But variants of the virus often have mutations in this protein.

ResearchersTrusted Source warn that as the virus continues to mutate, variants may resistTrusted Source these antibodies and thus escape the protection of currently available vaccines.

In an effort to develop second-generation COVID-19 vaccines, some scientists are looking at parts of the virus that do not mutate as quickly. Among them are scientists from the Broad Stem Cell Research Center, at the University of California, Los Angeles.

A team from the center recently completed a study showing that rare T cells, a type of white blood cell, can target a different protein in SARS-CoV-2 and a range of other coronaviruses. Part of this protein is an enzyme called viral polymerase (RdRp).

Theoretically, vaccines based on RdRp could trigger a longer-lasting immune response, as well as greater protection against future variants.

But, as Martin Hibberd, a professor of emerging disease at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, noted in an interview with Medical News Today, “It is worth pointing out that so far, universal vaccines are not required, as we have not yet had a variant of SARS-CoV-2 that can escape the current vaccines.”

How T cells function

T cells are white bloods cells that help fight infections. Each has a unique protein called a T cell receptor on its surface that can recognize fragments of foreign proteins, such as those of viruses. These foreign proteins are called antigens.

When one receptor recognizes an antigen, T cells start replicating quickly and destroy the cells that the virus has infected. Many of the T cells die off once the infection is gone, but some become memory cellsTrusted Source and remain in the body, ready to fight the virus if it ever returns.

Identifying the T cells with receptors of particular interest can be time consuming and expensive because they are often present in very low numbers.

Investigating T cell receptors

The authors of the recent study conducted a series of laboratory experiments involving RdRp. To investigate whether the human immune system has T cell receptors that recognize RdRp, the team took blood samples from healthy participants and exposed the samples to RdRp. Some of the receptors in the blood samples did recognize the protein.

Using a newly developed technique, the scientists identified the genetic sequence of the receptors. Next, they engineered T cells to carry the receptors that targeted RdRp.

The team then set out to learn whether these modified T cells could successfully bind to and kill coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2.

What did they find?

The authors discovered that RdRp was “highly conserved,” meaning that the RNA that codes for it is less likely to mutate, within SARS-CoV-2 and other human coronaviruses.

The authors explain that this stability is “likely due to its critical role in the virus life cycle.”

T cell receptors from people who had never contracted SARS-CoV-2 did recognize part of RdRp. As hoped, receptors isolated in the laboratory recognized and killed cells containing this enzyme.

Dr. Owen Witte, a co-author of the study and the center’s founding director, told MNT, “We were pleasantly surprised that specific T cells could be identified, as the anticipated frequency of such cells would be expected to be low.”

Pavlo Nesterenko, a Ph.D. student and the study’s lead author, told MNT:

“The polymerase could be a good next-generation vaccine candidate because it is highly conserved. High conservation means that multiple variants, as well as multiple coronaviruses, can be targeted by one vaccine.“

Big Picture

FTA23 repeals Subtitles A, B, C and H of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986: income and self-employment taxes; estate and gift taxes; and payroll and withholding taxes; and financing of presidential election campaigns. All the other subtitles have been moved up a couple of notches and it would now be the Internal Revenue Code of 2023 (IRC 2023) with a new Subtitle A - Sales Tax. The references that will follow will be to the sections of IRC 2023 as opposed to sections of FTA23 (the bill that enacts the new Code).

The effective date is January 1, 2023

I am at a loss as to how that is supposed to work. To stay sane, I will assume that the Sales Tax kicks in and the others go out on January 1, 2025. 2025 is the first year for which a rate is set. If the bill were actually to pass. I think there might be a lot more extensive transitional stuff included.

The Sales Tax

Sections 1 and 2 give us principles of interpretation and definitions. I will refer to them as needed. Section 101 imposes the sales tax at a rate of 23% of the gross payments for taxable property or services.

I am please to see that @FairTaxOfficial seems to think I mostly got it right and spin free. The premise of this piece was to look at the act as a tax professional. Reilly’s First Law of Tax Planning is: It is what it is. Deal with it. Hence in this context I eschew commentary on whether it is a good or bad idea.
