Is the FBI secretly running dark web terrorist recruitment?

US law enforcement is known for entrapment tactics, and the secrecy around a recent terrorism case is suspicious

A high-level conspiracy of silence surrounding a US terrorism prosecution raises serious questions over whether theFBI possesses technological means to bypass dark web user anonymity, or alternatively manages extremist group recruitment sites in secret, in order to entrap unsuspecting visitors.

US citizen Muhammed Momtaz Al-Azhari was charged in May 2020 with attempting to provide material support to ISIS. He came to the attention of the FBI due to a series of visits he made to a dark web site, which hosts “unofficial propaganda and photographs related to ISIS” in May 2019.

The Bureau pinpointed specific pages of the site Al-Azhari perused including sections on making donations, ISIS media assets, photos and videos, and stories of military operations allegedly conducted by ISIS fighters in Iraq, Syria, and Nigeria. These actions were linked to him directly by uncovering his IP address, and therefore his identity and location.

Al-Azhari accessed the site via the TOR browser, which theoretically provides anonymity to users, and makes it difficult if not impossible for a site’s owner or external prying eyes to track visitor IPs. A recent court filing by Al-Azhari’s lawyers reveals that’s precisely what the FBI did though and exactly how they achieved this is being withheld by government decree.

“[Using TOR] onion-like layers of additional IP addresses prevent the true IP address of the user from being visible like it would typically be on a clear-web site,” the filing states. “However, as the government’s complaint affidavit indicates, the government was able to bypass TOR’s protections to identify the IP address of the visitor to the ISIS website. In discovery, the government has declined to provide any information related to its TOR operation.”

Al-Azhari’s legal team attempted to compel the US government to disclose the method by which the FBI unearthed his IP address, but authorities without explanation requested the prosecuting Court treat their formal request as a “highly sensitive document.” This is a file containing “sensitive or confidential information that may be of interest to the intelligence service of a hostile foreign government and whose use or disclosure by a hostile foreign government would likely cause significant harm.”

While the filing records that “few documents” filed in US courts ever qualify as “highly sensitive,” the government’s request was granted, again without any explanation. However, the filing hints at a possible explanation chanced upon by Al-Azhari’s lawyers.

In researching how to legally compel the government to release details of their client’s identification, they discovered “at least two federal cases” in which authorities blocked disclosure of similar information on the grounds “network investigative techniques” - a euphemism for hacking- were used by investigators.

The filing suggests these techniques might have been one of the ways in which the FBI “may have bypassed TOR’s protections in the operation,” and determined Al-Azhari’s IP address. The FBI’s use of “network investigative techniques” is well-known and openly admitted. Yet, the “highly sensitive document” designation is, the lawyers acknowledge, only employed “when necessary to protect highly classified or highly confidential information.”

The filing suggests this means the FBI is attempting to classify publicly-available information as “top secret”, but another interpretation is theFBI could be actively running the website Al-Azharivisited for the purposes of entrapment. How the FBI uses “network investigative techniques” was revealed in a 2016 affidavit, related to an extraordinary Bureau operation that ensnared the users of Playpen, then one of the largest child porn sites on the dark web.

A year earlier, the FBI seized Playpen’s servers, and indicted its founder and owner,but kept the site operating from government servers rather than closing it, installing tracking viruses on the computer of each and every visitor. Then, with just one search warrant, they were able to hand over the locations of Playpen’s users across the US, leading to their mass arrest.

While it only remained open for two weeks after the FBI’s takeover, it’s estimatedthe Bureau distributed over one million images of child abuse during this time, and the affidavit indicates Playpen was just one of 23 child porn sites where it had the ability to identify users. Cybersecurity researchers believe it to be “a pretty reasonable assumption” that this figure meant the FBI was running around half of the dark web’s child porn sites at the time.

This led University of Kansas law scholar Corey Rayburn Yung to argue theFBI had “actively participated in the revictimization of those depicted in child pornography,”and the operation was “immoral and inexcusable,” particularly given that there was no control over whether the material was then sold and/or shared again once downloaded. While no one at the Bureau was ever penalized, let alone prosecuted, for the ruse, it created a large number of prosecutorial issues in other ways for the Department of Justice.

While the FBI accumulated 1,300 separate IP addresses through its management of Playpen, less than 100 cases actually made it to court. Judges in several US states ruled the operation was absolutely illegal, and the evidence gathered on suspects was inadmissible. In one successful trial, despite the defendant being convicted of grave crimes, the presiding justice condemned the Bureau’s “outrageous” tactic of using “child victims as bait.”

To say the least, the FBI would have every interest in concealing its deployment of the same highly controversial and likely criminal strategy from the public, its targets, and their legal teams to catch terror suspects.

Alternatively, it could be the case that the Bureau has developed an entirely new technology for deanonymizing dark web users it does not want the world to know about.

In June 2021, the FBI achieved perhaps the biggest, most elaborate and successful sting in its history, which resulted in over 500 arrests all over the globe. The Bureau pulled off this coup bysetting up a front company, ANOM, which sold encrypted devices that were marketed to criminals as unbreakable by any law enforcement entity or security or intelligence agency.

Over 12,000 ANOM devices were sold to over 300 criminal syndicates operating in over 100 countries. Little did the users know that every message they sent and received was stored, making a very simple matter of tracking the movements and activities of, and building cases against, major drug traffickers and mafia clans.

This is particularly relevant given that

European and North American sanctions on Russia have forced millions of people all over the world to turn to the dark web to use the internet as normal, and many of the tools being promoted to people to circumvent these measures in the mainstream, such as Psiphon VPN, are quietly funded by the US intelligence community, and only provide users privacy from their own governments.

FBI Seizes Handwritten Notes From Biden’s Time as VP From Rehoboth Beach House; Biden Spox Refuses to Answer Questions on Search

The FBI searched Joe Biden’s Rehoboth Beach, Delaware home Wednesday morning for more classified documents.

According to Biden’s lawyer Bob Bauer, the Rehoboth Beach was searched earlier this month by private lawyers and no classified documents were discovered.

The FBI conducted a separate search on Wednesday from 8:30 am to noon and found no documents with classified markings.

The agents took handwritten notes that appear to be from Biden’s time as Vice President.

“The DOJ’s planned search of the President’s Rehoboth residences, conducted in coordination and cooperation with the President’s attorneys, has concluded. The search was conducted from 8:30 AM to noon. No documents with classified markings were found. Consistent with the process in Wilmington, the DOJ took for further review some materials and handwritten notes that appear to relate to his time as Vice President,” Biden’s personal lawyer Bob Bauer said in a statement.

Biden’s spokesman Ian Sams on Wednesday refused to answer if the FBI searched any other locations for classified documents.

Ian Sams claimed Joe Biden has been transparent from the beginning even though it took leaks to the media for the American people to find out about the FBI searches.

CBS’s Ed O’Keefe asked Ian Sams why it took so long for the FBI to search Biden’s Rehoboth Beach house.

Recall, Joe Biden traveled to his Rehoboth Beach house a couple weekends ago where he huddled with several aides.

House GOP advances resolution to remove Omar from Foreign Affairs panel

House Republicans advanced a resolution on Wednesday to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee, sending the measure to the floor for debate and bringing Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) one step closer to fulfilling a longtime pledge.

CDC Aware Of Reports Of 'Debilitating Illnesses' After COVID-19 Vaccination: Official

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials are aware of reports of long-lasting problems following COVID-19 vaccination, an official recently disclosed.

“With respect to reports of people experiencing debilitating illnesses, we are aware of these reports of people experiencing long-lasting health problems following COVID vaccination,” Dr. Tom Shimabukuro, director of the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office, said on Jan. 26.

“In some cases, the clinical presentation of people suffering these health problems is variable and no specific medical cause for the symptoms have been found,” Shimabukuro added. “We understand that illness is disruptive and stressful, especially under those circumstances. And we acknowledge these health problems have substantially impacted the quality of life for people and have also affected those around them. And we hope for improvement and recovery, and we will continue to monitor the safety of these vaccines and work with partners to try to better understand these types of adverse events.”

Shimabukuro was speaking during a Jan. 26 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) meeting that discussed COVID-19 vaccine safety and effectiveness.

Dr. Hayley Gans, a pediatrics professor at Stanford University Medical Center, had asked how federal authorities were tracking problems that have cropped up after vaccination and might not be “amenable” to rapid cycle analysis, or one way of monitoring vaccine safety.

Shimabukuro noted that any person, including health care workers, can submit reports of adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), which the CDC manages, “and we accept all those reports without judging the clinical seriousness or how plausible the adverse event may be with respect to causation.” Other systems also monitor safety beyond the rapid analysis, he added.

“We take vaccine safety very seriously,” Shimabukuro said.

Shimabukuro’s comments are unusual among federal officials, who have been reluctant to connect adverse events with the COVID-19 vaccines.

Brianne Dressen, who was injured by AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, said that the response was welcome but wondered whether it was enough.

“This was an unprecedented move but also was a carefully worded response. Instead of a little whisper in an FDA meeting, this really needs to be communicated to the medical community,” Dressen, co-founder of the support group React19, told The Epoch Times in an email. “They have said these very words to us privately so it’s good they are finally leaning in the right direction to start the conversation publicly, but is it too little too late?”

“Injured Americans have been begging these agencies for acknowledgement for over two years. This small utterance should have happened long ago. By now we should be openly discussing and researching these Covid vaccine reactions,” she added.

Analysis of the Australian Electoral Commission’s 2022 donations data dump has revealed ‘dark money’ comprised up to 40% of major political party revenue. Liberals were the worst offenders.

Dark Money reached a record-breaking $119 million in 2022, according to an analysis by the Australian Democracy Network of the AECs latest data dump.

Dark money is defined as money with no identifiable source which has flowed to a political party or campaigner.

Not all political parties claimed the same amount of dark money, with over half (55%) of the Liberal party’s $105 million having no identifiable source.

The Greens were second, with 46% of their $22 million having no source, followed by the Nationals at 37% of the $11.5 million they made in 2022.

Labor best on transparency

Labor had the lowest percentage of dark money at 27% of all the major parties, perhaps due to a large amount of union funding the party receives.

In the past two decades, over $2 billion in undeclared income has flowed to political parties.

The major players aren’t the only ones hiding their earnings, Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie had revealed no sources from her half million dollars in funding.

According to shareholder advocate and Crikey founder Stephen Mayne, “Jacqui Lambie is normally good on disclosure but the source of her 446k in receipts in 2021-22 remains completely dark. Not one name revealed.”

“This means she was only supported by donors who contributed less than $14,500” says Mayne. Although the other explanation might be that a large donor has split multiple donations beneath the disclosure threshold to conceal their payments. Such are the oft-criticised flaws of Australia’s political donations regime.

Additionally, Mayne found the Liberal National Party of Queensland’s disclosure to be lacking “There is no National Party in QLD so the LNP return is always an interesting read. Pathetic level of disclosure with $10m+ being dark in 2021-22 as they only detail $3.97m of the $14.4m they received. Pokies billionaire Bruce Mathieson gave 50k”.

Saffron Zomer, the Executive Director of Australian Democracy Network who conducted the analysis says that the amount of dark money flowing through the political system should be a concern for voters:

Dark money erodes public trust in our democracy, and it’s an easy problem to fix. The public deserves to know who bankrolls elections and political parties, and we call on the Government to improve political donation transparency before the next election.

CEO of Transparency International Clancy Moore said the overwhelming presence of dark money in political donations is one of the drivers of Australia’s poor score in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index – released yesterday.

Every year, the major parties line their pockets with millions of dollars in donations under the cover of darkness with no transparency as to the source of this ‘dark money’. This cabal of secrecy creates an uneven playing field and has a corrupting influence on our democracy.

Billionaire Zelensky-Backer & Ex-Minister Among Ukrainian Officials Targeted In More Anti-Corruption Raids

In yet another case of curious timing, given it comes a day after the US Treasury issued a (dubious) statement saying US authorities have found no evidence of misuse of the billions in US aid funds flowing into Ukraine, Wednesday has witnessed more anti-corruption raids on a number of prominent government-linked figures.

Among the homes raided by Ukraine’s security agency, the SBU, included that of the former interior minister Arsen Avakov, as well as one of the the country's richest men with ties to Zelensky, Ihor Kolomoisky.

In Kolomoisky's case, state security services released photos of the Ukrainian billionaire's home being searched. The probe is reportedly related to massive embezzlement and fraud cases centering on Ukraine's two largest oil firms.

"In a statement that made no mention of the tycoon, the economic security bureau said it had exposed large-scale embezzlement schemes and tax evasion worth 40bn hyrivnia ($1bn; £880m) by the former management of Ukraine's two biggest oil firms, Ukranafta and Ukrtatnafta," BBC reports.

Kolomoisky had already long been under US sanctions over "significant corruption" allegations during his time as governor of the wider Dnipropetrovsk region in 2014.

After meeting Chasing Horse in 2011, and says she was sexually assaulted by him in 2014 when she was just a child and has now launched a ‘campaign of awareness’.

Corena, who posted her claims online in September, says she called Chasing Horse and other men 'grandfather' – with the actor telling her she had to 'give up' her virginity to help her mother.

She said: 'At the time I didn't recognize what happened for what it was. And I was proud to help my mom. And I didn't expect it to happen again I thought it was a one time thing.

'But it just kept happening. On the road with just him and his helpers. And at first he would get a room for his helpers and one for us with two beds.

'And either he would sneak into my bed or he would make me go to his and the rape continued.

'Then it stopped being two beds and went to just being one in the room. I don't remember much. I just know things happened every night and there would be several times he recorded himself raping me.

Huge decline in abortions in Russia – minister

The number of procedures has more than halved over the past decade, according to the country’s health minister

Abortion numbers in Russia have fallen significantly over the past decade, Health Minister Mikhail Murashko has said. The official made the remarks on Wednesday during a meeting between government ministers and senators with Russia’s upper chamber, the Federation Council.

“Looking at the past decade, the [abortions] figure has more than halved,” Murashko stated.

The minister explained that the reduction in numbers was driven by pre-abortion counseling services. Last year, more than 44,000 women in Russia gave up the idea of having the procedure after receiving psychological and social help, Murashko noted. According to Russia’s most recent demographic doctrine, adopted back in 2021, the authorities are aiming to provide counseling to at least 80% of women who are considering abortions.

The head of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, praised the progress which has been made. “Of course, we need to move forward in this regard. First of all, to provide medical and psychological assistance to women, which, of course, contributes to a significant reduction in abortions,” said the official.

Matvienko also credited the efforts of private humanitarian organizations, as well as the role of the Russian Orthodox Church in contributing to the downward abortion trend.

“Perhaps no less important is the fact that the standpoint of society itself has changed: more and more citizens are believing that abortion is unacceptable,” she noted.

A substantial portion of the documents on Julian Assange were destroyed by the Swedish Prosecution Authority, which investigated him for rape in a criminal investigation opened and closed three times between August 2010 and November 2019. The materials destroyed were correspondence between the Swedish Prosecution Authority (SPA) and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) which was providing the SPA with support on the case, since Assange was under investigation in Sweden but had been in London since 2010.

Since 2015, we have been engaged in trench warfare in Sweden, Britain, the United States and Australia to access the full documentation on the case under FOIA, represented by seven lawyers.
