Goldman Sachs recorded a larger-than-expected 69% drop in profit for the fourth quarter, taking a hit on a substantial decline in deal making revenue and a higher provision for loan losses. Shares fell nearly 7%.. Last week, Goldman Sachs cut 3,200 jobs, dismissing workers in the company's New York, London and Hong Kong offices. 'Widely expected to be awful, Goldman Sachs' Q4 results were even more miserable than anticipated,' said Octavio Marenzi, CEO of consultancy Opimas. 'The real problem lies in the fact that operating expenses shot up 11 percent, while revenues tumbled. This strongly suggests more cost-cutting and layoffs are going to come,' he added.The results marked Goldman's biggest miss of Wall Street expectations since 2011, according to Refinitiv, and its shares dropped more than 5 percent in morning trading. Faced with declining revenue from deal-making and asset management, CEO David Solomon has been forced to look for ways to cut costs, and recently began slashing a workforce that ballooned following the pandemic. Goldman and other Wall Street banks are making deep cuts to their workforce and streamlining their operations as dealmaking activity, their major source of revenue, stalls on worries over a weakening global economy and rising interest rates. The latest results showed Goldman's investment banking fees fell 48 percent last quarter, while revenue from its asset and wealth management unit dropped 27 percent due to lower revenue from equity and debt investments.

It also reported a pre-tax loss of $778 million in its platform solutions unit, which houses transaction banking, credit card and financial technology businesses, including Apple Card and fintech lender GreenSky. Full-year net loss for the platform solutions business was $1.67 billion, the bank said Goldman is planning to stop making unsecured consumer loans, a source familiar with the move told Reuters last month, in another sign it was moving away from its consumer business, including the troubled online bank Marcus.

Goldman's trading business was a rare bright spot as it benefited from heightened market volatility, spurred by the Federal Reserve's tightening monetary policy. Fixed income, currency and commodities trading revenue was up 44 percent, while revenue from equities trading fell 5 percent. Meanwhile, total operating expenses at Goldman rose 11 percent to $8.1 billion in the quarter, in a sign of the soaring costs that Solomon seeks to rein in with layoffs. In the layoffs that began last week, many Goldman employees were given little notice, and were cut loose without even receiving bonuses for their work in 2022, the Financial Times reported.

NASA’s Curiosity Rover Discovers Opal-Gemstone On Mars

A research team using new methods to analyze data from NASA's Curiosity, a rover operating on Mars since 2012, was able to independently verify that fractures in the bedrock contained opal, on Earth a gemstone formed by the alteration of silica by water. Unlike common crystals, opal is an amorphous mineral consisting of layers of microscopic silica-spherules with water filling the gaps between them. Light is scattered along the surface of the spherules, giving common opal colors ranging from white to yellow to red. The most valuable "noble opal" display a glittering array of rainbow colors.

The study finds that the vast subsurface fracture networks would have provided conditions that were potentially more habitable than those on the surface.

In 2012, NASA sent the Curiosity rover to Mars to explore Gale Crater, a large impact basin with a massive, layered mountain in the middle. As Curiosity has traversed along the Mars surface, researchers have discovered light-toned rocks surrounding fractures that criss-cross certain parts of the Martian landscape, sometimes extending out far into the horizon of rover imagery. Recent work finds that these widespread halo networks served as one of the last, if not the last, water-rich environments in a modern era of Gale Crater. This water-rich environment in the subsurface would have also provided more habitable conditions when conditions on the surface were likely much more harsh.

As part of a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets, led by former Arizona State University NewSpace Postdoctoral Fellow Travis Gabriel, now a research physicist for the U.S. government, archival data from several instruments were examined and showed considerable anomalies near light-toned rocks earlier in the traverse. By happenstance, Curiosity rover drove right over one of these fracture halos many years ago, long before Gabriel and ASU graduate student and co-author Sean Czarnecki joined the rover team.

Looking at the old images, they saw a huge expanse of fracture halos extending far into the distance. By applying new methods for analyzing instrument data, the research team found something curious. These halos not only looked like halos found much later in the mission, in completely different rock units, but were similar in their composition: a whole lot of silica and water.

"Our new analysis of archival data showed striking similarity between all of the fracture halos we've observed much later in the mission," Gabriel said. "Seeing that these fracture networks were so widespread and likely chock-full of opal was incredible."

Russia blasts France over Orthodox cemetery move

French authorities are waging "war on the dead" by refusing to work with Moscow on a major Russian cemetery, Foreign Ministry believes

The decision to suspend cooperation with Russia on an Orthodox cemetery in Paris over the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and to refuse payments for expiring tomb concessions, are examples of "blatant inhuman immorality," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has said.

The Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois Russian Cemetery, established in the late 1920s and located in the southern suburbs of the capital, houses the tombs of many emigrants who fled west from their country following the 1917 Bolshevik revolution and the civil war that ensued.

The decision, undertaken by the authorities of the commune, was brought to light in a report by Le Monde over the weekend. According to the report, multiple tombs at the necropolis, housing more than 5,000 Orthodox graves, have already been marked with warning notices that their concessions have expired.

"Paris, giving in to the herd mentality, joined the war on the dead? The authorities do not risk touching mass graves of soldiers of the Red Army on the territory of France yet, fearing the wrath of the enlightened French, who still honor the memory of the Resistance and [Charles] de Gaulle," Zakharova said in a statement, adding that unlike France, Russia honors any French graves on its territory, whether they be those of Napoleon-era soldiers or fighters of the Soviet-French Normandie-Niemen fighter squadron.

"Those in France who are pursuing a Russophobic course want to capitalize on the fancy cancellation of everything Russian, while only innocent Orthodox eight-pointed grave crosses of the Russian white emigration would suffer," Zakharova added, branding the move a display of "blatant inhuman immorality."

Earlier in the day, the Russian embassy in France voiced its concerns over the cemetery’s fate, noting however, that the local city hall had said that the payments issue has been put on hold,while the potential demolition of the graves was not on the table.

"We consider it categorically unacceptable that political games in the West, in the context of the Ukrainian crisis, take such unsightly forms, jeopardizing the safety of the graves of long-deceased Russians," the embassy said in a statement, urging local authorities to defuse the situation.

Putin allows sanctioned Russian firms to disregard shareholders from ‘unfriendly’ stateskek

Corporate decisions will not require securing a vote from those individuals, under a new law

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Tuesday, allowing certain companies to disregard the votes of shareholders from so-called ‘unfriendly’ countries when making corporate decisions.

The document providing for this, published on a portal of legal information, will apply to companies in the energy, mechanical engineering and trade sectors with annual revenue of more than 100 billion rubles ($1.46 billion). It will be in force until the end of 2023.

According to the new law, the management authorities of such companies will be able to make decisions without counting the votes of shareholders from ‘unfriendly’ countries. To qualify, the companies must meet a number of criteria. One of these is that other countries or international organizations must have imposed sanctions against the owners or beneficiaries of such companies. Another criterion is that foreign persons with ties to unfriendly states have interests of 50% or less in the authorized capital or shares in such companies.

In case nationals from unfriendly states are members of a company’s management authority,other shareholders will have the right to pass a resolution without counting their votes, the document said.

EU sanctions goal is to crush Russian economy – Von der Leyen

Western penalties will cause “a decade of regression,” the European Commission president tells WEF

EU sanctions are aimed at plunging the Russian economy into a recession for years to come and depriving the country of crucial technologies, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in an address to the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos on Tuesday.

The European bloc has imposednine rounds of sanctions against Russiasince the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, targeting many sectors of the economy, including energy, high-tech, aviation, banking, mining, automotive and other industries.

“We have put in place the strongest sanctions ever, which leave the Russian economy facing a decade of regression and its industry starved of any modern and critical technologies,” von der Leyen said.

The latest restrictions came into force in December and include new export controls and restrictions on dual-use goods and technology, along with products and technology that could be used in the defense and security sectors. The measures target key chemicals, nerve agents, night-vision and radio-navigation equipment, as well as electronics and IT components.

Brussels is now working on the next batch of penalties, which will reportedly target Russia’s nuclear industry and diamond trade. Other penalties which the EU is rushing to symbolically implement by February 24 include cutting more Russian banks off from the SWIFT global messaging system and banning more of the country's media outlets.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday thatthe country’s economy is performing “much better than what not only our opponents but even we ourselves predicted” and is on course for further stabilization.

Far-right group on trial over Macron assassination plot

The defendants allegedly conspired to commit a series of terrorist attacks, including a hit on the French president

Thirteen people said to be affiliated with the extreme right-wing group ‘Les Barjols’ (‘The Crazies’), which allegedly conspired to kill French President Emmanuel Macron, went on trial in a Paris court on Tuesday.

The defendants – 11 men and two women between the ages of 22 and 66 – have been charged with conspiring to commit a terrorist act, which carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison. The trial is scheduled to conclude on February 3.

The court hearings come after a four year-long investigation into the group, which is said to have been plotting assorted violent acts, including attacks on mosques, killing migrants, and even the assassination of Macron at a public event commemorating the World War I armistice, according to the indictment.None of these alleged plansever came to fruition, and some of the charges initially brought up against the suspects were dropped during the investigation.

“It is established that the projects of violent action conceived by the members of the Barjols group … were aimed exclusively at seriously disturbing public order through intimidation or terror,” the indictment read.

The ultra-right Barjols group originally emerged on Facebook back in 2017 and its alleged leader, Denis Collinet, was arrested in 2020. One of the suspects, Jean-Pierre Bouyer, who was 62 at the time, got on the radar of law enforcement after France’s domestic intelligence services received a tip-off about an allegedly looming attack on Macron.

Bouyer was arrested in November 2018 during a meeting with three close associates. A bulletproof vest and a ‘commando’-style knife were seized. During additional searches, French police officers also seized firearms and ammunition from Bouyer’s home.

While Bouyer initially admitted to the police that he had wanted to “kill Macron,” implying one of the accomplices would have stabbed the president at the event, he later said the discussions had been mere talk. “He admits that there were such discussions, but they never went any further,” Bouyer’s lawyer, Olivia Ronen, told AFP.
