Swiss airspace open again after computer crash

Flights in and out of Switzerland were suspended for hours and Swiss airspace closed because of a computer failure at air traffic control service Skyguide.

Geneva and Zurich halted early flights but Geneva airport announced air traffic was gradually resuming.

Skyguide said a technical malfunction in the early hours of Wednesday meant Swiss airspace had had to be closed to traffic for "safety reasons".

Some flights were being diverted to Milan in northern Italy.

Skyguide spokesman Vladi Barrosa told Tagesanzeiger news website that the problem appeared to be a hardware fault and they did not believe their system had been hacked. The company later announced that the "technical malfunction at Skyguide has been resolved" and airspace closure lifted at 08:30 (06:30 GMT).

Bain's British office was subsequently caught up in Guinness scandal as advisers to the drinks firm

Romney under pressure to release tax returns for the years before 2010 as Obama accuses him of profiteering from the destruction of companies

Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney built his $250 million fortune with the help of two of Britain's most disreputable business figures - Guinness fraudster Jack Lyons and crooked newspaper boss Robert Maxwell.

In the 1980s both men invested large sums in the Republican candidate's first private equity fund, started during his years at Bain & Company, which launched his now highly controversial career in finance.

Flamboyant publishing tycoon Maxwell was the former head of the left-wing Mirror Group newspapers and a one-time owner of the New York Daily News.

He died in mysterious circumstances in 1991 at the age of 68 after falling overboard from his luxury yacht off the Canary Islands after which it was discovered he had plundered hundreds of millions from an employee pension scheme.

Lyons, who died in 2008, was one of the notorious 'Guinness Four' convicted for a massive share trading fraud in which they attempted to inflate the price of Guinness shares to assist a take-over bid for Scottish drinks company Distillers.

He was subsequently fined £4 million for theft and false accounting and stripped of his knighthood.

In 1984 Lyons, a former colleague of Mr Romney's at Bain & Company, along with members of his family invested almost $3million in Mr Romney's capital fund.

He then recruited Maxwell who invested $2 million in the fund.

Both Lyons and Maxwell kept money in tax havens and the latest revelations will be a blow to Romneywhose financial career is increasingly being brought into question.

Romney has claimed his fortune and career history is proof of his ability to run the country.

Mr Romney was a senior management consultant at Bain during one of the most controversial periods in the firm's history when they became caught up in the Guinness scandal as advisers to the drinks firm.

Bain Capital, the firm's investment arm, was set up by Mr Romney in 1981 and run from his Boston office.

Lyons was hired to help set up a British office and became the fund's first investor with a $2.5 million stake via a front company in Panama.

One Bain executive based in London at the time told the paper: 'Jack took an interest in Bain almost as if we were his sons.

'He wanted us to succeed in the UK and he introduced us to a lot of people . . . I remember attending a luncheon in London with Robert Maxwell.'

Around $12 million was invested by Bains partners including Mr Romney who is believed to have put up at least $160,000.

The fund was phenomenally successful, and according to a prospectus, yielded an average return of 173 per cent a year on stakes in 21 firms.

In 1986 Lyons joined a group of Guinness allies buying up stock in the firm in an attempt to boost the share price prior to a takeover bid for rival firm Distillers.

It was a success and at the time Bill Bain, the firm's founder and Mr Romney's mentor, wrote to Lyons saying: 'We are all delighted and look forward to hearing the story of how you managed to pull it off.'

Lyons and three others were later convicted of theft and false accounting. Lyons avoided jail due to ill health. but he was stripped of his knighthood and CBE, and fined £4 million.

Although there is no suggestion that Mr Romney, nor anyone at Bain in Boston had any knowledge of the wrongdoing a Bain employee in London described the period as 'traumatic'.

He told the Telegraph: 'Mitt was just another partner watching this thing unfold.'

Another British former colleague described him as 'bloodless'adding 'He was the sort of person that you would admire rather than like, and I think that continues to bedevil his political career.'

5. Obama's call to ramp-up and embrace of our now pervasive surveillance state

In his first run for president, Obama repeatedly criticized George Bush for using post-9/11 programs to spy on American citizens. But after entering office, Obama has done nothing but ramp up all forms of surveillance, from metadata capture to wiretapping to recording phone log information of American citizens. Edward Snowden's revelations about the NSA's surveillance programs and capabilities shoot deep into the territory of science fiction and George Orwell's 1984. Obama's speech on the NSA and surveillance this January provided little in the way of peace of mind for any citizen concerned with maintaining a shred of privacy. Robert Scheer got to the heart of the matter:

"Barack Obama’s speech on surveillance was his worst performance… in its stark betrayal of his oft-proclaimed respect for constitutional safeguards and civil liberty. His unbridled defense of the surveillance state opened the door to the new McCarthyism of Mike Rogers and Dianne Feinstein, the leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees, who on Sunday talk shows were branding Edward Snowden as a possible Russian spy.

"Somewhere in law school, Obama must have learned that the whole point of our Bill of Rights, inspired by American revolutionaries like Sam Adams, a Sons of Liberty co-conspirator, was to curtail government power as the main threat to freedom. Thus was Adams’ insistence on the Bill of Rights, including the Fourth Amendment, banning the warrantless searches that Obama now seeks to justify."

Nick Bryant revealed in his investigation of the Franklin cover-up that Greta Van Susteren was the lawyer for Henry Vinson, who was a key figure in this whole scandal. Henry Vinson is a West Virginia-based businessman who in the early 1990s was tried and convicted for operating a male prostitution ring in Washington DC, that supplied adult-age gay male prostitutes to powerful DC political figures. Additionally, Nick Bryant and Henry Vinson co-wrote a 2015 book called "DC Madam: The Politics of Sex, Lies & Blackmail," that goes into extensive detail about Henry Vinson's involvement with a DC sex trafficking ring. As Nick Bryant documented in his book “The Franklin Scandal,” and as thoroughly documented in Bryant & Vinson's "DC Madam" book, Henry Vinson, through the operation of his prostitution ring, became directly involved with two key alleged abuse perpetrators in the "Franklin Scandal": Larry King and Craig Spence. Again, as documented in Bryants' and Vinsons' books, Larry King (full name Lawrence E. King) and Craig Spence were extremely well-connected political powerbrokers, who were both accused by multiple underage children and teenagers of operating a major underage sex trafficking ring that supplied children to powerful figures in both the Omaha, NE and Washington DC areas, and used them in blackmailing operations. Lawrence E. King was, for a time in the 80s, a bank director in Omaha and extremely well-connected to the state and national Republican party. The bank King managed was the "Franklin Credit Union" in Omaha NE, hence the name of the scandal. Henry Vinson specifically describes Craig Spence as some kind of "CIA asset." As documented in Byrant and Vinson's research, Spence was for a time in the 80s a well-connected DC lobbyist, who owned a private mansion in Kalorama, a very upscale suburb of Washington, DC. Henry Vinson specifically alleges that as part of his pimping business, on many occasions he sent adult-age male prostitutes to what he describes as "orgies" at Spence's Kalorama mansion. Vinson also alleges that on at least some occasions, male prostitutes who worked for Vinson told him afterward that underage children were present at at least some of these alleged orgies at the Kalorama mansion. So there are allegations from both Vinson, and the adult age prostitutes working for him at the time, that trafficking and sexual abuse of underage minors occurred at the Kalorama mansion in D.C.

Ohio Is The First State To Follow Florida On Anti-Grooming Bill

Republican state lawmakers in Ohio have presented a bill copying Florida’s contentious bill that critics call “Don’t Say, Gay,” teeing up another intense confrontation over how sex and gender issues are handled in schools.

Presented on Monday, Ohio’s HB 616 would forbid classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade, just like the Florida law condemned by LGBTQ advocates.

State Rep. Mike Loychik, a Bazetta Republican and one of the bill’s two sponsors, wrote in a tweet: “Curriculum about gender identity and sexuality has no place in K-3 classrooms, period.”

The bill’s other sponsor, GOP Rep. Jean Schmidt of Loveland, said in a statement: “The classroom is a place that seeks answers for our children without political activism.”

“Parents deserve and should be provided a say in what is taught to their children in schools. The intent of this bill is to provide them with the tools to be able to see what their child is being taught,” added Schmidt.After Florida’s new law brought activist fury and lawsuits, the Ohio bill will certainly cause controversy – and the proposal in the Buckeye State goes even further.

The Ohio bill would also demand that any curriculum or instructional materials on sexual orientation or gender identity in grades four through 12 must be “age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”
