FSB foils NATO-supervised Ukrainian operation to hijack Russian planes

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced Monday that it had foiled a Ukrainian military intelligence operation to hijack Russian Aerospace Forces combat aircraft, which was supervised by NATO special services.

In a statement, the FSB said: "The Russian Federal Security Service uncovered and stopped the operation of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense to hijack combat aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, supervised by NATO special services".

Ukrainian military intelligence officers, affiliated with the country's political leadership, attempted to recruit Russian military pilots in exchange for a monetary reward and guarantees of obtaining citizenship in one of the EU countries, according to the statement.

Ukrainian officers have also attempted to persuade Russian military pilots to land aircraft at airfields controlled by Ukraine's armed forces, it added.

The statement concluded by saying that the Ukrainian special services personnel involved in this operation, as well as their accomplices, have been identified.

UK, Bellingcat highly involved

The FSB additionally exposed that the UK intelligence services provided significant assistance to Ukrainian military intelligence in its operation to hijack Russian military aircraft.

"The operation obviously was carried out with the support of Western, primarily British, intelligence services," an FSB officer was quoted by the Rossiya 24 channel.

According to materials provided by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), Christo Grozev, the executive director of investigative journalist group Bellingcat (listed as a foreign agent in Russia), joined a Ukrainian military intelligence operation aimed at hijacking Russian military aircraft.

In further detail, Grozev found two couriers who met a courier from Moscow hired by Ukrainian intelligence officers who were carrying an advance payment of $4,000 for a Russian pilot who reportedly agreed to the hijack, as per Grozev's correspondence with one of the operation's participants, which was broadcasted by Rossiya 24.

The Kiev regime has been ignoring discontent among soldiers and civilians and refuses to disclose casualty numbers

Five months into Russia's military offensive in Ukraine many in the latter state are starting to vocalise their objection to the draft imposed by the regime in Kiev.Especially as the propaganda about victory, any day now, starts to lose its power.

Popular Ukrainian blogger and activist Yury Kasyanov recently made a post on his Facebook page, in which he complained: “Let’s stop the mobilization, open the borders, and dissolve all the military recruitment offices… Let the professionals do the fighting – after all, they get paid for it – and let the volunteers join in, because they want to fight. But I am an untrained civilian, unfit for war, I’m going to get myself killed. And I pay my taxes, too!”

“Judging by the comments on the previous post,nine out of ten Ukrainians have no intention to fight; they oppose nationwide mobilization, as well as the ban on men leaving the country.”

It should be noted that Kasyanov’s followers, like himself, are fierce supporters of the idea that Ukraine must fight Russia to the bitter end. And yet, even among them, the vast majority have no desire to die for the glory of Ukraine.

Modern civilization is built on a very self-conscious attitude toward one’s health. Other core values include bodily integrity, the right to privacy, and of course, everyday comfort and convenience. None of these go together well with the squalid realities of the front line. One might say that the whole ethos of war stands in opposition to the values of today's society. It should come as no surprise, therefore, that Ukrainians do not want to go to war. Yes, if you listen to what they say, the majority of Ukrainians are patriots. But when it comes to getting up from the couch and actually going to the front, very few are willing to ‘walk the talk’.Soiboys

And I don’t imagine that,after 30,000 more Ukrainian soldiers have perished on the battlefield, anyone would feel more motivated to join the cause. In fact, it would likely produce the opposite effect: ‘I don’t want to die like all the others’. It is much safer to engage in fiery debates on social media from home, or to follow the fighting on YouTube.

What’s more, Ukraine is going through a demographic crisis with its population shrinking from 52 million in 1991 to barely more than 30 million, even before the conflict erupted in February. The situation is so bad that the state has avoided holding a census for over two decades.

While the internet is flooded with videos of Ukrainian soldiers refusing to fight, complaining that their fleeing commanders are throwing them at tanks as cannon fodder– without any equipment or training. There are hundreds of these videos and new ones are uploaded every day. They are shot by Ukrainians in military fatigues, not Russian state media. Also, the number of videos showing Ukrainian women refusing to let their men be taken by the police or recruiters is also growing…

Not once has President Vladimir Zelensky mentioned the countless instances of soldiers refusing to obey orders, which is mostly the case with mobilized men and volunteers on the front line who thought they were going to serve near their home areas.

There is little wonder why Ukrainian media pretends the issue doesn’t exist. The mere acknowledgement of the fact that so many soldiers are discontented would shatter the carefully constructed image of a nation united in selfless patriotism.

The gag order from the Ukrainian government preventing publication of any data on the army’s losses – unquestioned by Western media – is no accident either. All of this provides a clear answer as to why Kiev is actively recruiting foreign mercenaries.

Military enlistment offices are extremely disorganized. Recruitment campaigns are run in the streets, shopping malls, and even on public beaches. Recruiters have also been reported using their power to draft eligible males as leverage against them or a means of revenge or punishment. This again shows that many perceive the prospect of joining the army to protect the homeland as undesirable rather than an honor.

It remains unclear how Kiev plans to tackle this pressing issue, when so many seem to feel the cause is not worth risking their own lives for.

Former Nudgee College principal Stephen McLaughlin attended school celebration despite allegations of child sexual abuse

A Christian Brother who was suspected by police of being a paedophile was able to attend a birthday party at exclusive Brisbane private school St Joseph's Nudgee College, despite his order being in negotiations to pay a settlement to one of his alleged victims.

Former college headmaster Stephen David McLaughlin, who had been the subject of unproven child abuse allegations in the 1990s and early 2000s, was photographed at the celebration for a former staff member at the school on May 31, 2017.

Some students from the college were present at an official welcome prior to the function that was then attended by McLaughlin, who had been boarding master at the school in the early 1980s before becoming College headmaster in 1988 and then leader of the Brother's Xavier province in 1996.

Nicknamed Stumpy by students, McLaughlin was investigated in the late 1990s and 2000s and in one case committed for trial on indecent dealing charges, but was never convicted in relation to allegations made by four alleged child abuse victims.

Some of the allegations revolved around the then Brother taking young children, often from single-parent families, to stay with him alone in Brisbane motels.

Investigating police found payment records showing McLaughlin paid for the motel stays using his credit card.

Two of the complainants had siblings who had attended Nudgee College.

At the time, McLaughlin denied all allegations and his legal team argued the complainants were unreliable and their statements contradictory.

But in early 2017, Brisbane solicitor Peter Deed, acting on behalf of one complainant from the late 1990s, approached the Christian Brothers seeking compensation for his client.

The complainant alleged that when he was a 15-year-old schoolboy in Brisbane he had been introduced to McLaughlin by self-confessed child molester and Nudgee old boy Dennis Norman Douglas in 1997, according to legal documents sighted by the ABC.

Bellingcat confirms involvement in Ukrainian plot to steal Russian jets

The controversial group insists, however, that it was merely making a “documentary film”

Christo Grozev, self-styled ‘lead Russia investigator’ with Bellingcat, confirmed on Monday his involvement in a Ukrainian intelligence plot to incite Russian military pilots to defect and hijack their planes. The senior member of the controversial Western-funded group, however, challenged the story told by the Russian side.

Russia’s Security Service (FSB) has presented “a traditional mix of forged ‘evidence’ and loosely interpreted facts” on the affair, Grozev claimed, rejecting allegations of being directly involved in the plot. According to a middleman detained by Russian intelligence, he had been receiving orders directly from Grozev on how to deliver cash to the pilots in exchange for videos proving they actually have access to warplanes.

“What is true, however, is I was involved in this crazier-than-fiction story of triple-agents, fake passports and faux girlfriends – as a documentary film maker,” he said, in a lengthy Twitter thread about the matter. Grozev did not, however, directly address the claims made against him by the detained suspect.

“Grozev… did not actually explain anything to me, he just told me the name of the courier who would deliver the money by train,” the suspect claimed.

Russia has repeatedly questioned the independence and credibility of Bellingcat. Despite advertising itself as an investigative group specializing in fact-checking and open-source intelligence, with both professional and citizen journalists contributing, it has been receiving state funding from multiple Western states. The group was labeled “undesirable” in Russia earlier in July, with the designation effectively prohibiting any operations in the country for it.

Last year, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) chief Sergey Naryshkin squarely accused Bellingcat of working closely with Western intelligence services with the sole goal to “put pressure on either [Russia] or on individuals and entities.”

“They use dishonest methods. And the information that is used in such cases is false, unverified, it has its own goals… They are ready to perform any task, because they do it for money, not objectively,” Naryshkin asserted.

Deadly gunfire rips through park in Los Angeles

A mass shooting left two people dead and at least five wounded in Los Angeles’ San Pedro neighborhood, while an informal car show attended by hundreds of people was taking place on Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of armed police officers responded to reports of gunfire at Peck Park around 3:50pm. According to the LA Police Department, it was not considered an ‘active shooter’ situation, but police had no suspects in custody as of 9pm on Sunday evening.

“We don’t know how many shooters we have at this point,” LAPD’s Capt. Kelly Muniz said, adding that investigators believe the shooting was sparked by a “dispute” between two parties. Several weapons were found at the scene.

Videos from the area show a massive police presence, as well as firefighters and paramedics carrying people away on stretchers. Some particularly disturbing clips circulating online showed a bloodied individual lying on the ground, motionless.

A total of seven people were rushed to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, four men and three women. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries and is in a critical condition.

Verizon announced on Monday that they would no longer include One America News Network in their FIOS cable provider channel lineup.

Verizon said the negotiations with OANN was typical and usual and that OAN did not agree to “fair terms.”

Verizon is set to drop the right-wing One America News Network (OAN) from its channel lineup after the network and company failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.

Verizon said in a statement to The Hill that it will no longer have the rights to OAN after July 31, and the network will be removed from the television lineup.

“Our negotiation with OAN has been a typical, business as usual carriage negotiation like those that routinely happen between content distributors and content providers,” the statement reads.

Verizon said that the negotiations were based on economic considerations and that OAN did not agree to “fair terms.”

“Our company has long advocated for providing customers with the ability to choose what content they want to watch, and our Fios TV platform offers a wide and diverse choice of programming options, including a la carte options, that strive to meet our millions of customers’ various content needs and preferences,” Verizon said.

The development is a blow to OAN after DirecTV declined to renew its contract with the network in January.

Incoming University of Michigan medical school students staged a walk-out during the pro-life keynote speaker's speech during their White Coat Ceremony.

Hundreds of students had previously petitioned to get Dr Kristin Collier, assistant professor of medicine at UMMS, removed from the initiation because of her anti-abortion stance.

But after their first protest failed, dozens of students got up from their seats and left the auditorium as Christian Dr Collier took to the stage to address them.

Footage shows some of those present clapping as Dr Collier starts her speech, but others stood and filed out as she continued to speak.

Starting her speech, Collier said that she was 'honored' to have been chosen as the speaker, ignoring the mass walkout.

She said: 'I want to acknowledge the deep wounds our community has suffered over the past several weeks. We have a great deal of work to do for healing to occur.

'And I hope that for today, for this time, we can focus on what matters most: coming together to support our newly accepted students and their families with the goal of welcoming them into one of the greatest vocations that exist on this earth.'

As concerns mount about a possible recession this year, White House National Economic Council director Brian Deese argued that a second consecutive quarter of negative GDP growth was technically “not a recession.”

According to Deese, the “technical definition considers a much broader spectrum of data points.” He also emphasized the need to look ahead rather than “technical debates about backward-looking data.”

CNN “New Day” host John Berman said, “It sounds like you’re anticipating what will be comments from some saying two quarters of negative growth in a row — that’s a recession.”

“Right,” Deese replied. “And certainly, in terms of the technical definition, it’s not a recession. The technical definition considers a much broader spectrum of data points. But in practical terms, what matters to American people is whether they have a little economic breathing room, they have more job opportunities, their wages are going up. That has been Joe Biden’s focus since coming into office. He has had a view of the economy that we need to look to build from the bottom up.”

“What that means is typical working-class people in this country have had trouble affording things for years,” he continued. “He is focused on building a strong, durable, economic recovery here. We have real global challenges here in the short term. We’ve got to navigate our way through them, but we have to do so without giving up all our economic gains. That’s going to be our focus.
