RENTON, Wash. — A new effort is aimed at putting a stop to human trafficking in King County.

The legislation was recently proposed after a Renton spa employee was arrested and accused of holding a woman against her will and forcing her into sex work.

Quyen Nguyen pleaded not guilty Thursday morning to two felony charges of first-degree attempted promoting prostitution and unlawful imprisonment.

This case prompted one county council member to jump into action.

“[It's] shocking that modern sexual slavery exists in the Puget Sound area,” said King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn.

Dunn called on local leaders to take a comprehensive look at massage parlor businesses. The King County code that regulates them hasn't been reviewed since the 1980s.

Dunn's legislation would get law enforcement and non-profits together to make recommendations.

“We have a code enforcement division, they can red tag these buildings, we can shut them down, we can prosecute if there are violations of law,” said Dunn.

Dunn said a 2013 report done by King County estimated there were 84 massage parlors in the area involved in human trafficking at the time.

“We want to stop businesses from being able to operate any kind or form of human trafficking or sexual slavery,” Dunn said.

Massage parlors are one of the top venues for trafficking and many women who are trafficked are immigrants, often mislead about the type of work they will be doing, according to the Polaris Project.

The victim in this case immigrated to the U.S. and got a job at the spa in Renton, according to charging documents. That's when she said she was forced to pose for photos that were used in advertisements for prostitution. The victim said her life was threatened if she didn't cooperate, according to charging documents.

Renton police said she was able to run away and call 911.

Flight Delay Chaos Begins As Delta Pilots Warn Of "Perfect Storm"

The busiest travel period of the year is underway as hundreds of flights are already delayed setting up for what could be a "perfect storm" of disruptions over the Independence Day holiday weekend.

As of 1440 ET, FlightAware, a flight tracking company, reports 680 flights are delayed and 28 canceled. The number has been steadily increasing Friday as air travel demand soars amid pilot and crew shortages causing flight disruptions. Most of the delays are at airports across the Northeast, including New York City and Washington–Baltimore metropolitan regions.

"We're now going into the Independence Day Holiday weekend and are concerned that our customers' plans will be disrupted once again," Captain Jason Ambrosi, Chairman of the Delta Master Executive Council (MEC), a unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, said in a statement.

Ambrosi continued: "The perfect storm is occurring. Demand is back, and pilots are flying record amounts of overtime but are still seeing our customers being stranded and their holiday plans ruined."

Hundreds of off-duty pilots picketed Delta Airlines at airports this week. Pilots are stressed as flight delays and cancelations result in record amounts of overtime this year.

Earlier this week, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told NBC Nightly News's Lester Holt, "there are going to be challenges" this holiday weekend.

"There's no quick fix" to the mess in the air, United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby recently said, adding the industry is short 12,000 pilots.

Besides labor shortage, airline industry group Airlines for America, which represents the country's largest airlines (American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest, JetBlue, and Alaska Airlines, as well as shippers FedEx and UPS), blamed the Federal Aviation Administration's own understaffing for "crippling" East Coast air traffic. This looks like finger-pointing to us.

Buttigieg warned last month that airlines face federal government action— presumably fines — over mounting flight cancellations and delays.

This weekend will be nothing short of a disaster if the trend of delays and cancelations continues.

According to German daily Der Spiegel, the dispute regarding the blockade initiated by Lithuania over the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is picking up pace, with signs showing that the measures could soon be lifted.

Lithuania banned the transit of goods through Lithuanian territory to and from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, citing EU sanctions against Russia.

The goods in question include coal, metals, construction materials, and advanced technology, and the ban covers around 50% of the region's imports.

Since the blockade was initiated, the EU Commission and Lithuania have been discussing whether goods being transited to and from Kaliningrad are subject to EU sanctions. Now, Germany is pushing for an exemption for the exclave in order to avoid a European escalation against Russia.

According to Der Spiegel, there is anger in Germany against Lithuania's actions, as Berlin does not share the assessment that the transit of sanctioned goods to Kaliningrad should not take place through EU territory, saying that this is a case of transport from Russia to Russia, and that is allowed.

Berlin also fears that a blockade against Kaliningrad would force Russia's hand into using force to create a land corridor. German soldiers stationed in Lithuania could become involved in a possible conflict, which Germany doesn't want.

A possible solution for the problem should be in place by July 10, when the next batch of sanctions is due to come into force.

White House press corps demands end to Biden event restrictions

A group of 68 journalists sent a rare protest letter to White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre Thursday asking that President Biden’s staff abandon a mysterious pre-screening process and reopen large events to all journalists.

TV correspondents, famed veteran reporters and leaders of the White House Correspondents’ Association rallied behind the call to end year-old restrictions on venues such as the East Room that in past administrations were “open press.”

Biden aides have refused to tell the Correspondents’ Association the selection criteria for presidential events and individual reporters have received an array of conflicting explanations, resulting in a widespread belief that the practice is meant to shape the variety of questions presented to the president.

“The current method of allowing a limited number of reporters into these events is not only restrictive and antithetical to the concept of a free press, but it has been done without any transparent process into how reporters are selected to cover these events,” the letter says.

Johnson knew of MP's sexual misconduct when giving him party position

Politico reported on Friday that UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had been aware of all sexual harassment charges against Conservative MP Christopher Pincher at the time he was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Conservative Party.

UK broadcaster Sky News reported earlier in the day that the 52-year-old lawmaker "groped two men in front of others" in a drunken state at a club in central London on Thursday evening. The Tory MP later apologized for his behavior and said that he was resigning from his position.

Despite resigning, Pincher said he would continue his activities as an ordinary lawmaker.

Several Tory MPs had called on Johnson in February not to appoint Pincher to such a key position, wherein he would be "responsible for discipline and welfare of the party", according to two MPs and government officials.

Johnson was explicitly warned of Pincher's sexual harassment allegations.

"As soon as his name was in the running, people went into No. 10, including MPs, with new allegations about what he’d done," one of the officials said, as quoted by Politico.

Pincher also served as Minister of State for Europe and the Americas from July 2019 to February 2020.

This is all happening amid Tory losses in by-elections, and a decline in public support for the British Conservative Party, which had been rocked by successive scandals, most notably the PM's own Partygate scandals.

Military Convicts and Executes Michael Sussmann

At his military tribunal on 22 June, former Clinton lawyer Michael Sussmann said in an opening statement that he thought he was “home free” after a Federal D.C. jury acquitted him of lying to the FBI about having knowledge of a computer server that linked President Trump to a Moscow Bank and to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Sussmann, representing himself, accused the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps and Office of Military Commissions of malicious prosecution, saying they had become Donald Trump’s personal police force— “A Gestapo Trump uses to settle vendettas against anyone he doesn’t like.” He likened Trump to Joseph Stalin, whose People’s Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) had a monopoly on Soviet law enforcement through the end of World War II. The NKVD was infamous for making Stalin’s enemies—and their families—disappear.

When Vice Adm. Darse E. Crandall accused Sussmann of grandstanding, the latter grew visibly angry, calling both the admiral and the 3-officer panel “Donald Trump’s personal bitches.”

“We’ve heard this nonsense time and time again, detainee Sussmann,” Vice Adm. Crandall said calmly. “You’re here today because of your crimes, not President Trump. He had nothing to do with our investigation, or your arrest. You can conduct yourself civilly, or we can gag you.”

“This is double jeopardy,” Sussmann cried out. “A jury of my peers found me not guilty!”

Sussmann’s statement referred to a clause in the Fifth Amendment to the US Constitution that prohibits anyone from being prosecuted twice for substantially the same crime. For a lawyer, though, he had poor understanding of the law. Exceptions to the Double Jeopardy clause state an individual can be tried twice based on the same facts if the elements of each crime are different, and different jurisdictions can charge the same individual with the same crime based on the same facts without violating Double Jeopardy.

And Vice Adm. Crandall had a different reason. “Maybe you’re confused, detainee Sussmann. We’re not charging you with lying to the FBI. We’re charging you with treason, and conspiracy to commit election fraud, for which you were well paid,” he said.

He entered into evidence Sussmann’s banking records for September 2016. On the 16th of that month Sussmann received a deposit for $1,400,000. It had come from Act Blue, a seedy American nonprofit technology organization established in June 2004 that enables left-leaning nonprofits, Democratic candidates, and progressive groups to raise money from individual donors on the Internet by providing them with online fundraising software. Three days later, Sussmann told former FBI official James Baker that computer data showed secret communications between Trump, the Trump Organization, and Russia-based Alpha Bank. Four days afterward, Sussmann got another sizable deposit, this time from the Clinton Foundation for $2,220,000.

Neither payout was mentioned at his federal trial.

Baker, who left the FBI in 2018 and now works at Twitter, said at Sussman’s federal trial, “Michael’s a friend of mine and a colleague, and I believed him and trusted that the statement was truthful.”

“Let’s put aside the Act Blue deposit. If, detainee Sussmann, the Clintons did not employ you to feed the FBI false information on President Trump, would you care to explain why they paid you over two million dollars?” Vice Adm. Crandall asked.

“For consulting fees and speaking engagements,” Sussmann replied.

“What consulting? And where did you speak?” Vice Adm. Crandall asked.

“That is private,” Sussmann said.

“Detainee Sussmann, your life hangs on your answers. And you’re unwilling to justify why you were given a multimillion-dollar payout? The evidence suggests you were paid to do everything in your power to slander Donald J. Trump to halt his bid for the 2016 presidency. And that’s your final answer?”

“I have nothing more to say,” Sussmann said.

Vice Adm. Crandall rested his case, asking the 3-officer panel tasked with judging Sussmann’s fate to consider carefully why the Clinton Foundation—and Act Blue—would have charitably surrendered millions of dollars for no obvious reason.

It took the panel only 10 minutes to reach a verdict: guilty.

Sussmann was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death.

He was executed by gunshot eight hours later.

Israeli media: "Israel" looking to sell air defense systems to KSA

Israeli media outlets reported on Friday that the occupation is interested in selling air defense systems to Saudi Arabia during US President Joe Biden's upcoming visit.

Israeli Kan TV's military expert Itay Blumental said, answering a question on whether there is an interesting plan that "Israel" wants to push forward during Biden's visit, that "According to estimates, 'Israel' over the coming weeks will try to push forward a security deal with Saudi Arabia, one that will involve the sale of air defense systems."

Blumental further noted that this will all take place under US sponsorship, as "Israel" and Saudi Arabia do not share official diplomatic relations.

He also added that it's expected that Biden will meet with Israeli Security Minister Benny Gantz, and Israeli Chief of the General Staff Aviv Kochavi. During the meeting, Biden will listen to a briefing on Israeli air defense systems, like the Iron Dome, and the Hetz.

This, according to Blumental, involves agreements with Gulf countries, and it can be said that in the last few weeks some transport aircraft landed in Ovda Airforce base, "and not more can be said on why the planes landed there."

The White House announced on June 14 that Biden will visit both "Israel" and Saudi Arabia during his trip in West Asia.

Following the announcement of the trip, Biden said that part of his visit to Saudi Arabia concerns Israeli security.

Libya: Protestors storm parliament in Tobruk

According to reports by Libyan media, protestors stormed Libya's parliament building in the eastern city of Tobruk on Friday.

The protestors were demonstrating against worsening living conditions and the political deadlock that has plagued the country for months.

Some television channels said protestors managed to enter the building and commit acts of vandalism, with others saying part of the building was burned.

The building was empty, as Friday falls on the weekend in Libya.

Libya's parliament has been based in Tobruk, hundreds of kilometers east of the capital, since the country's east-west schism began in 2014.

Images revealed that protestors were able to smash part of a gate leading to parliament with a bulldozer, with others setting the cars of some officials on fire. Others still were throwing official documents into the air, while committing acts of vandalism.

Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Geneva, quoting a UN source, reported on Wednesday that the Libyan parties have reached an understanding with a document expected to be signed.

The source said that "the document to be signed is very important, and will open the door to a serious path towards the elections," adding that "the document will be presented to the Libyan authorities and parties, to be approved before moving to the implementation phase."

'America First' is America at its best

It's disingenuous to link the movement with pre-World War II isolationists

OPINION:

As former Trump Administration national security officials who deeply believe in an America First approach to U.S. national security policy, we strongly object to the May 14 Washington Post editorial, “‘America First’ is America at its worst,” which smeared the “America First” movement by associating it with isolationists of the 1930s and ’40s who tried to keep the United States out of World War II and claims those who support America First oppose providing Ukraine with more military aid.

These claims are false and misleading. We asked The Washington Post to run this rebuttal of their editorial, but they refused to publish this full response. Typical for the Post, it refuses to give the conservatives it attacks a fair opportunity to respond.

While there may be others in Washington who casually call themselves “America First,” we at the America First Policy Institute served alongside former President Donald Trump in senior positions at the White House and in departments and agencies throughout the Executive Branch. We are among the leaders of the America First Movement. We have been abundantly clear in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s destructive invasion of Ukraine and the vile atrocities his military is committing there. We have repeatedly stated the urgency that the United States provide Ukraine with all the weaponry it needs to defend itself against Russia’s unjustifiable invasion.

It was disingenuous for the Post to associate the America First movement with isolationism or pre-World War II isolationists who opposed the United States entering World War II. Today’s America First calls for an independent and secure America with a strong military and alliances. We want to ensure America’s supply chains and economy are stable and robust, and its people are safe. Through internal strength, our nation is best poised to lead and engage in the world and accomplish more for the American people and the peace, prosperity and freedom of others. America First is not isolationism. Rather, it is purposeful transactional engagement with other nations to serve American interests first.

As a result, although we support providing additional military support to Ukraine, including the recent approval by the House of $40 billion for this purpose, we share the concerns of some members of Congress that these funds be well spent, and alliance members contribute equitably. Frankly, we have strong concerns that, once again, America is doing more than its European allies. Sen. Rand Paul has a proposal to name an inspector general to oversee this funding. The special inspector general for Afghanistan was created for this purpose during the U.S. presence in Afghanistan. Given the current problems plaguing the U.S. economy and the fact that Ukraine is now the number one recipient of U.S. military aid, we believe it is essential to ensure accountability for the large sums America is committing to help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion.

America First foreign policy and strong U.S. leadership make the world safer and represent America at its best. Contrary to many liberals, conservative hawks and deep state leakers, the leadership of Mr. Trump did not make the world less safe; it did exactly what it was designed to do — make America strong again and the world a safer place with a purposeful, transactional foreign policy that put the interests of our nation and the American people first.

As history shows us, the only time this century Russia didn’t invade a neighbor was during the four years when Mr. Trump served as commander in chief. America First does not mean America alone. As the only true guardians of America First foreign policy, we unquestionably oppose the Russian invasion of Ukraine; we want the United States to send the Ukrainian military the weapons it needs and ensure accountability for the military aid we are providing to Ukraine.

DoD announces $820M package for Ukraine, Germany exports $584M in arms

The US Pentagon announced Friday another package of security assistance for Ukraine worth $820 million that includes two advanced surface-to-air missile systems and four additional counter-artillery radars in light of the war in Ukraine.

"This afternoon, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced $820 million in additional security assistance for Ukraine," the Pentagon said in a press release. "Included in this package are: Two National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS); Up to 150,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition; and Four additional counter-artillery radars."

The new package also includes additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) that Washington had previously pledged to Ukraine, the release said.

The United States announced sending a new batch of military supplies to Ukraine, the White House said on Thursday. The new batch is worth $450 million of arms that include more rocket systems for Ukraine to use against the Russian forces.

Earlier that day, Ukraine received a batch of HIMARS, weapons set on top of the Ukrainian wishlist, and the Ukrainian Minister of Defense Oleksiy Reznikov thanked, via his Twitter account, his “colleague and friend Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III for these powerful tools!"

Since the start of the war, the United States has deployed more than 100,000 of its troops to NATO member states.

Berlin approves $584 million worth of arms to Ukraine

Ukraine became the second-largest market for German armaments after Berlin approved the exports of 562 million euros ($584 million) worth of arms to Kiev in the first six months of 2022, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) said Friday.

BMWK said in a report that the German cabinet had approved a total of $4.31 billion in arms exports worldwide, a two-fold increase year on year.

The Netherlands still held first place in terms of arms exports from Germany, with arms deliveries amounting to $1.87 billion. Ukraine, on the other hand, came in second with approved exports averaging $584 million.

The European Union, NATO, and allies, including Ukraine and South Korea, accounted for 92% of all approved German arms export deals in the first half of the year - a total of $3.96 billion in agreed contracts.

For German arms-producing firms to sign defense contracts, they require the approval of the German cabinet. The number of concluded contracts, however, does not represent the actual arms supplies made during the said period since the deliveries could only be made after the government's approval and may take place after the reporting period.
