Hundreds die as Somalia faces famine

A drought in the Horn of Africa has taken away four of Owliyo Hassan Salaad's children this year.

Now she cradles Ali Osman, her weak and squalling 3-year-old, whom she carried on a 90-kilometer walk from her hamlet to Somalia's capital, frantic not to lose him as well.

She can scarcely speak about the young bodies buried back home in the dirt too dry for planting as she sits on the floor of a malnutrition treatment clinic full of worried mothers.

The death toll is rapidly increasing amid the region's worst drought in four decades. According to previously unreported data supplied to the Associated Press, at least 448 people have died this year in malnutrition treatment centers in Somalia alone.

Authorities in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are now focusing on the difficult challenge of preventing starvation.

'Silent death'

Many more individuals are dying without the knowledge of authorities, such as Salaad's four children, all of whom are under the age of ten. Some are killed in isolated pastoral settlements. Some people perish while undertaking rescue missions. Some die even after reaching displacement centers because they are hungry beyond help.

“Definitely thousands” have died, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Somalia, Adam Abdelmoula, told reporters on Tuesday, though the data to support that is yet to come.

Salaad had four more children with her husband. They were too weak to travel to Mogadishu, she explained.

Drought comes and goes in the Horn of Africa, but this time it's like no other. Humanitarian assistance has been sapped by global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and now the war in Ukraine. Prices for staples like wheat and cooking oil are rising quickly, in some places by more than 100%.

Why should a population live under mass indiscriminate surveillance and live under a hostile sky … to the extent that it’s embodied into everyday life.”

"Israel" maintains that the hostile violation of Lebanon's airspace is "necessary". However, these actions also violate UN Security Council resolutions, namely Resolutions 425 (1978) and 1701, which "Israel" has broken more than 22,000 times with impunity in the past 15 years.

A shooter opened fire inside a manufacturing facility in western Maryland Thursday afternoon, killing multiple people, authorities say.

Deputies responded to the active shooting in the 12900 block of Bikle Road in Smithsburg around 2:30 p.m.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office said there are "multiple fatalities."

The suspect was shot and injured during a confrontation with a Maryland State Police trooper, the sheriff's office said. The shooter was hospitalized, but their condition is unclear at this time.

The trooper suffered a minor injury, authorities said.

No further information was immediately available.

Bennett arrives in UAE to meet bin Zayed, discuss Iranian file

The Israeli occupation's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett landed in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday for talks with President Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, following a free trade deal signed last month.

Bennett's second visit to the UAE since the two normalized relations in a US-brokered 2020 deal also comes after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted a resolution against Iran's nuclear activity.

Speaking before leaving for UAE, Bennett hailed the IAEA for condemning Iran.

"We see here a firm stance by the countries of the world regarding the distinction between good and evil, as they clearly state that Iran is concealing things," he said, according to a statement from his office.

It is noteworthy that the IAEA’s adoption of the resolution came after a surprising meeting between the Director-General of the Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and Bennett, in "Tel Aviv" on June 3.

The UAE was the first Gulf country to normalize ties with the Israeli occupation.

The visit will mark Bennett's first meeting with Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Al-Nahyan since he assumed the presidency following the death of his half-brother Sheikh Khalifa last month.

Bennett and Bin Zayed met twice last year, in Abu Dhabi and in Egypt.

Police Kill Intruder Trying to Forcefully Enter Alabama Elementary School

Police on Thursday fatally shot a man trying to forcefully enter an elementary school in Gadsen, Alabama.

The potential intruder went to several locked doors trying to get into Walnut Park Elementary School before police shot him dead, according to Gadsen City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick.

And Joe Biden is opposed to “hardening schools” in the aftermath of the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Republicans have pitched measures to beef up security at schools such as single point of entry, fencing, metal detectors and armed security.

Joe Biden and the Democrats are pushing back on the security proposals because their goal is to ban guns.

Responding police officers engaged the intruder before shooting him dead.

No children were harmed.

The identity of the intruder has not been released at the time of this publication.

A person who was trying to enter an Alabama elementary school where a summer program was being held was shot to death by a police officer Thursday morning, authorities said.

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton told The Gadsden Times that a police officer from nearby Rainbow City was working as a school resource officer and encountered the person, got involved in an altercation and called for backup, Horton said. At least one other officer responded and the person was shot to death.

No students were hurt, sheriff’s officials said. “All kids are out” of the building, Reddick said, and most didn’t even realize something had happened.

“We don’t know the potential of what could have happened had those two officers not responded the way they did, so we very much commend them for that,” Reddick said.

Authorities didn’t immediately release the identity of the person who was killed or any details about the altercation, including whether the person who died was armed or why they might have been trying to get into the school.

Grossi: Iran plans to disconnect 20 IAEA cameras

Diplomats attending the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) meeting said that agency's Director-General, Rafael Grossi, declared that Iran plans to disconnect 20 IAEA surveillance cameras and other monitoring equipment.

This comes after the IAEA's Board of Governors adopted on Wednesday a draft resolution submitted by the US, France, UK, and Germany, criticizing Iran for what they claim were incomplete answers given to the IAEA on uranium traces at "undeclared sites". These claims were quickly refuted by the Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, who said that Iran has neither secret or unwritten nuclear activities nor unreported nuclear sites.

Russia and China both voted against the anti-Iran resolution.

Before the release of the IAEA report that later led to the US and E3 submitting the draft, Grossi visited "Israel", which raised questions regarding the nature of the visit ahead of the BoG meeting, and led to suspicions regarding the IAEA's impartiality.

The AEOI also released a statement on Wednesday, wherein it announced that Tehran has made the decision to remove two of the IAEA's cameras from a nuclear facility.

Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Thursday an informed source as saying that Iran will speed up the production and installation of new generations of centrifuges, including the IR6, IR4, and IR2M generations.

According to the source, this is only one of a series of procedures to be taken by Iran, adding that the IAEA will be informed of them.

Iran's new move, which Grossi announced, seems to be one of those measures.

An Illegitimate Court Gets Ready To Convene

As the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6 Attack prepares to stage a show trial of Donald Trump on Capitol Hill this week, I have filed a lawsuit challenging the Select Committee’s gross violations of the Constitution’s separation of powers.

Yes, congressional committees do have the power to investigate. Yet, they can only do so in pursuit of a “legislative function,” e.g., to enact new rules, regulations, or policies.

What settled law explicitly rules out is the pursuit of a “judicial function” in which a congressional committee seeks to act as judge, jury, and executioner. That clearly violates the separation of powers – punishment is reserved exclusively for the judicial branch.

In this case, Nancy Pelosi’s Democrat-controlled House passed H. Res. 503 on May 21, 2021 to establish the committee; and the legislative activity of all seven of the committee’s Democrats reveal their clear intent to unconstitutionally punish Trump and his most senior advisors by subjecting us to the shame, humiliation, ostracization, banishment, denial of public office, and possible imprisonment that comes with being falsely accused of being insurrectionists seeking to overturn a fair election.

A sordid legislative history of these committee members spanning more than five years includes: a thoroughly discredited Russia hoax, two attempted impeachments, a Trump censure, and three House resolutions to remove Trump from office.

The committee’s chair, Bennie Thompson, himself created a task force in 2017 as part of the perpetuation of the Russia hoax and has described President Trump as “racist and unfit to serve.” Thompson also refused to show up for Trump’s 2017 inauguration.

Thompson’s chief lieutenant, Adam Schiff, was the lead investigator for the first Trump impeachment trial and the tip of the Democrat’s spear for the Russia hoax. After his hoax imploded, Schiff hired investigators to expand a probe into Trump "beyond Russia."

Jamie Raskin, the lead House Impeachment Manager for the second impeachment trial, has referred to Trump as “a barbarian,” and likewise repeatedly pushed the Russia hoax. Raskin also led the charge in pushing a trifecta of House resolutions to remove Trump from office.

Zoe Lofgren has called Trump “an ignorant bigot” who “shames our country” while seeking “to disqualify him from holding future office.” Elaine Luria boycotted Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address and attempted to convict Trump in the court of public opinion of “high crimes and misdemeanors set by the Constitution.”

Pete Aguilar and Stephanie Murphy likewise voted “yes” on both impeachments and co-sponsored H.Res. 24 which initiated the second impeachment. In acting as judge and jury in the second impeachment trial, Aguilar falsely alleged that “President Trump attempted to use the power of his office to coerce a foreign government to interfere in an American election.”

US aims to boost 'Israel', Arab states military co-op against Iran

The Department of State in Washington, DC, would join efforts with the Israeli occupation and several Arab states to bolster their aerial military capacities, which would offer them "protection" against Iran. The collaboration was part of proposed bipartisan legislation that will be introduced in Congress on Thursday.

The draft legislation said the parties to the agreement would be provided with a wide array of arms and equipment that would "protect" them "from cruise and ballistic missiles, manned and unmanned aerial systems, and rocket attacks from Iran, and for other purposes."

The U.S. military depends almost completely on China for a mineral essential to the production of ammunition and other defense products, Defense News reported Wednesday.

The House Armed Services Committee released draft legislation on Wednesday, which would require a briefing on the antimony supply by October and a five-year outlook on supply chain vulnerabilities, Defense News reported. The U.S. has no domestic mine for the mineral antimony, which is reportedly used in the production of night vision goggles, armor-piercing bullets, explosives and nuclear weapons.

“China in particular does a remarkably good job of hoarding these materials,” Massachusetts Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, told Defense News. “China clearly has a comprehensive global strategy to corner the market on these materials and we’re behind and we’re playing catch-up.”

In 2020, approximately half of the antimony mined originated in China, Russia and Tajikistan, according to Britannica.

What happened over the course of the past few days signals that Lebanon is entering a new stage.

This is evident through the British-Greek company setting up a rig in the Karish gas field within three months is a violation against Lebanon, putting it in a difficult situation, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said Thursday during a televised speech regarding the latest regional political developments.

"With the maritime borders and the vast riches in the [Mediterranean] sea, Lebanon today is before an issue that must become a major national cause," Sayyed Nasrallah added.

A "neighboring treasure" is how the Hezbollah leader referenced the riches in the Mediterranean, stressing that all of the wealth lying within and beneath the waters of the sea belongs to all of the Lebanese people, and it is "the last remaining hope to rescue Lebanon from collapse."

He underlined the importance of protecting the national energy resources and wealth, extracting them, and making use of them after their extraction, stressing that this should be a goal for Beirut. "On the regional level, only Syria and Lebanon are not allowed to dig for oil and gas under the threat of sanctions," he highlighted.

"The first threat emitting from the violation of Lebanon's maritime borders is Lebanon being robbed of a large area and all the treasures and [gas] fields it contains," he explained after saying there were three threats facing Lebanon.

The second threat is that "Lebanon is prohibited from extracting its oil, and this is a problem the Lebanese people must find a solution for," he said.

The third one, he underscored, was Lebanon's gas fields being emptied. "In this case, the element of time becomes highly important, i.e., when the time comes that we are allowed to extract [gas], we might not find anything."

"The issues of water, oil, and gas extraction are no less important than the issue of liberating the occupied Lebanese borders [with Palestine]. This issue has many key aspects that must work as a motive to push everyone to act responsibly."

"The main goal should be preventing the enemy from extracting oil and gas from Karish and impeding the activity that will start or that might have already started," Sayyed Nasrallah noted. "Every day we are [not extracting oil], the Lebanese people will be losing wealth and money."

Violations on Karish will be brought to a halt

The Karish gas field is a red line; therefore, all that is extracted from it is contested, Sayyed Nasrallah stressed.

"It is not important where the ship has docked nor where the drilling and extraction are taking place. The dangerous aspect of the issue is that the enemy will start extracting oil from the common, contested gas field, while Lebanon is prohibited from extracting [resources] from its own areas and blocs that have nothing to do with the conflict."

Lebanon, he explained, has the right, the motive, and the utmost need and power, under the banner of "the army and the resistance", in this conflict over the Karish gas field. "The resistance surely has the financial, military, and security capabilities to prevent the enemy from extracting oil and gas from the Karish gas field."

Not all of the enemy's measures can protect the floating rig and the extraction of gas from the Karish oik field, he clarified. "The repercussions of any blunder that the Israeli occupation commits will not only be strategic; they will be existential. Whatever Israel loses in any war they are threatening would far exceed what Lebanon might lose."

The Israeli occupation navy had been preparing to secure the area by means of naval vessels situated both above and below the surface of the sea, including submarines. The IOF also pointed out that they are "working to transfer the Iron Dome system in its naval version to the region."

"The heads [of the republic, the parliament, and the government] having a united front with the backing of the state and all of its institutions gives strength to the Lebanese negotiator," he stressed, noting that it is necessary to leave all domestic disputes behind when discussing an issue as great as Lebanon's territorial integrity.

"We are up against an enemy that does not recognize international resolutions, and the only path it follows is that of using force and arrogance. As per experience, it does answer to any UN resolution. It only responds to resistance and pressure. It was forced to withdraw in 2000 and from the Gaza Strip."

Man dies in officer-involved shooting outside Walnut Park Elementary School

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency has taken over an investigation into the fatal police shooting Thursday morning of a man outside Walnut Park Elementary School in Gadsden.

Etowah County Coroner London Pearce identified the deceased as Robert Tyler White, 32. He said the man lived in the Gadsden area; however, a news release Thursday afternoon from ALEA listed him as being from Bunnlevel, North Carolina.

Officials say the man tried to get into the school through several doors, but all were locked. His motives for trying to get into the school were not known, and school and law enforcement officials alike were praising the reaction to the incident: The would-be intruder never made it into the school, and the only substantial harm was suffered by him.

Here's what happened, according to law enforcement and school officials.

Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton said his office responded to a call that came at about 9:30 a.m. He said someone passing the school reported seeing someone trying to enter cars or the school, and thought it just didn't look right. A non-emergency call was made to Attalla police, Horton said, and relayed.

Gadsden City Schools Superintendent Tony Reddick said the man tried to get into the school through several doors. "We were blessed," he said.

Teachers in the system have been drilled on keeping school doors locked, and students have been drilled about never opening a door to anyone, even if they look like they belong at the school.

A Rainbow City police officer was at the school as a school resource officer, Horton said. He came out and confronted the suspect, and they scuffled. At some point the officer called for backup.

Horton said he got to the scene about 5 minutes after the call, and multiple agencies were already there.

The suspect was fatally shot during the incident.

The Rainbow City officer suffered minor injuries, according to Horton.

From information provided so far, the suspect did not have a weapon. However, Etowah County District Attorney Jody Willoughby said the man apparently tried to get the officer's gun during their altercation.

ALEA confirmed that in a statement Thursday afternoon: "An individual was attempting to make forcible entry into a marked Rainbow City patrol vehicle at which point a School Resource Officer with the Rainbow City Police Department attempted to stop the subject," according to ALEA. "The subject resisted and attempted to take the officer’s firearm.

Congress Jan. 6 hearings will be choreographed to be "TV spectacular"

The US House select committee investigating the Capitol riot will open its hearings on Thursday evening, doing so in TV primetime, and with the production values to match.

The seven Democrats and two Republicans sitting on the panel are doing all that they can to get the public to concentrate on the hearings, and draw their attention, going so far as to bring in a former president of ABC News, James Goldston, a veteran of mass-market TV programs.

Goldston is expected to choreograph the six public hearings into movie-length episodes ranging from 90 minutes to two and a half hours.

In short, he needs to fulfill the prediction made by one of the committee's Democrats, Jamie Raskin: That the hearings "will tell a story that will really blow the roof off the House."

Iranian news agency ISNA quoted Thursday an informed source as saying that Iran will speed up the production and installation of new generations of centrifuges, including the IR6, IR4, and IR2M generations.

According to the source, this is only one of a series of procedures to be taken by Iran, adding that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will be informed of them.

This comes after the IAEA's Board of Governors adopted on Wednesday a draft resolution submitted by the US, France, UK, and Germany, criticizing Iran for what they claim were incomplete answers given to the IAEA on uranium traces at "undeclared sites"; claims which were refuted by Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, Mohammad Eslami who said that Iran has neither secret or unwritten nuclear activities nor unreported nuclear sites.

On Wednesday, Iran's delegate to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohammad Reza Ghaebi, strongly condemned the decision made by the agency's Board of Governors to adopt the resolution drafted by the US and the E3 that demands more "transparency and cooperation" from Iran.

Ghaebi asserted that this resolution only serves unjust political goals by some of the IAEA members and that the allegations present in the Director-General's report on the locations in question in Iran are based on lies propagated by "Israel".

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) released a statement on Wednesday, wherein it announced that Tehran has made the decision to remove two of the IAEA's cameras from a nuclear facility.

The cameras were stopped as they were not part of Iran's commitment to the comprehensive Safeguards agreement.

The Iranian organization's Spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi said all beyond-Safeguards cameras recording data in Iran's nuclear sites were turned off “in accordance with the Strategic Law on the Lifting of Sanctions approved by the Majlis (Parliament)."

Kamalvandi further added that "Iran cannot be cooperative while the Agency displays unreasonable behavior. We hope the Agency will come to its senses and respond with cooperation with Iran."

DPR sentences to death captured UK mercenaries fighting with Ukraine

Three mercenaries, two from the UK and one from Morocco, were sentenced to death on Thursday in the DPR for fighting alongside Ukrainian militias and armed forces.

Private equity group L Catterton is looking for a buyer for the Plymouth-based yacht-builder, 'Princess Yachts". Princess Yachts was bought in 1981 by South African businessman Graham J. Beck, who then later sold a major stake to one of the world’s richest people, LVMH tycoon Bernard Arnault.

Arnault is, as of June 2022, the second-richest person in the world and the richest person from Europe, with an estimated net worth of US $152 billion according to Forbes. (wiki)
