In an escalation of partisan warfare, a little-known dark-money group is trying to thwart the President’s entire slate.

The American Accountability Foundation has undermined the likes of Ketanji Brown Jackson, but it’s also gone after relatively obscure political appointees whose public profiles can be easily distorted.

During the autos-da-fé that now pass for Supreme Court confirmation hearings in the U.S. Senate, it’s common for supporters of a nominee to dismiss attacks from the opposing party as mere partisanship. But, during the recent hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson, Andrew C. McCarthy—a Republican former federal prosecutor and a prominent legal commentator at National Review—took the unusual step of denouncing an attack from his own side. When Republican senators, including Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn, began accusing Jackson of having been a dangerously lenient judge toward sex offenders, McCarthy wrote a column calling the charge “meritless to the point of demagoguery.” He didn’t like Jackson’s judicial philosophy, but “the implication that she has a soft spot for ‘sex offenders’ who ‘prey on children’ . . . is a smear.”

In the end, the attacks failed to diminish public support for Jackson, and her poised responses to questioning helped secure her nomination, by a vote of53–47.But the fierce campaign against her was concerning, in part because it was spearheaded by a new conservative dark-money group that was created in 2020: the American Accountability Foundation. An explicit purpose of the A.A.F.—'a politically active, tax-exempt nonprofit charity that doesn’t disclose its backers—is to prevent the approval of all Biden Administration nominees.

While the hearings were taking place, the A.A.F. publicly took credit for uncovering a note in the Harvard Law Review in which, they claimed, Jackson had “argued that America’s judicial system is too hard on sexual offenders.” The group also tweeted that she had a “soft-on-sex-offender” record during her eight years as a judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. As the Washington Post and other outlets stated, Jackson’s sentencing history on such cases was well within the judicial mainstream, and in line with a half-dozen judges appointed by the Trump Administration. When Jackson defended herself on this point during the hearings, the A.A.F. said, on Twitter, that she was “lying.” The group’s allegation—reminiscent of the QAnon conspiracy, which claims that liberal élites are abusing and trafficking children—rippled through conservative circles. Tucker Carlson repeated the accusation on his Fox News program while a chyron declared “jackson lenient in child sex cases.” Marjorie Taylor Greene, the extremist representative from Georgia, called Jackson “pro-pedophile.”

Mudslinging is hardly new to American politics. In 1800, a campaign surrogate for Thomas Jefferson called Jefferson’s opponent, John Adams, “hermaphroditical”; Adams’s supporters predicted that if Jefferson were elected President he would unleash a reign of “murder, robbery, rape, adultery and incest.” Neither the Democratic nor Republican Party is above reproach when it comes to engaging in calumny, and since at least 1987, when President Ronald Reagan unsuccessfully nominated Robert Bork to be a Justice, the fights over Supreme Court nominees have been especially nasty. Yet the A.A.F.’s approach represents a new escalation in partisan warfare, and underscores the growing role that secret spending has played in deepening the polarization in Washington.

David Chipman, whom the President wanted to run the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and David Weil, Biden’s choice for the Wage and Hour Division of the Department of Labor, both saw their nominations founder in the wake of A.A.F. attacks. Currently, the group is waging a negative campaign against Lisa Cook, who, if confirmed, would become the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors.

Tom Jones, the A.A.F.’s founder and executive director, is a longtime Beltway operative specializing in opposition research. Records show that over the years he has worked for several of the most conservative Republicans to have served in the Senate, including Ron Johnson, of Wisconsin; Ted Cruz, of Texas; Jim DeMint, of South Carolina; and John Ensign, of Nevada, for whom Jones was briefly a legislative director. In 2016, Jones ran the opposition-research effort for Cruz’s failed Presidential campaign. When I asked Jones for an interview, through the A.A.F.’s online portal, he replied, “Ms. Meyers . . . Go pound sand.” Citing an article that I had written debunking attacks on Bloom Raskin from moneyed interests, including the A.A.F., he said, “You are a liberal hack masquerading as an investigative journalist—and not a very good one.” Jones subsequently posted this comment on his group’s Twitter account, along with my e-mail address and cell-phone number.

Pakistan makes offer to India

The country’s new PM, Shehbaz Sharif, calls for the long-standing Jammu and Kashmir dispute to be finally settled

Pakistan’s new prime minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi to finally settle the long-standing dispute over the Jammu and Kashmir regions, as well as other problems plaguing the relationship between Islamabad and New Delhi.

“We believe that peaceful and cooperative ties between Pakistan and India are imperative for the progress and socioeconomic uplift of our people and for the region,” Sharif pointed out in a message, seen on Sunday by Pakistani newspaper Dawn.

In order to bring ties to such a level, “meaningful engagement and peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes, including the core issue of Jammu and Kashmir” is required, he said.

Sharif insisted that Pakistan was “committed to the maintenance of regional peace,” adding that Islamabad’s contribution to fighting terrorism was “well known and globally acknowledged.”

Over the years, Islamabad and New Delhi have traded accusations of supporting terror groups on each other’s territory, so that these could deliver harm to the neighboring state.

Pakistan and India, which are both nuclear powers, should improve regional security together and jointly work for the “progress and prosperity of our people,” the PM stated.

A week ago, Modi had congratulated Sharif on becoming the head of the Pakistani government, saying that India was interested in “peace and stability in a region free of terror, so that we can focus on our development challenges and ensure the well-being and prosperity of our people.”

Reports in Indian media suggest that the sides have been working to organize a meeting between Modi and Sharif during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Uzbekistan in July.

Sharif was approved as premier on April 11 after his predecessor Imran Khan lost the top job in a vote of no confidence. Khan accused his political opponents of colluding with the US in order to oust him, his supporters staging massive protests.

Kashmir has been a bone of contention between India and Pakistan for decades as both countries claim the region to be their own territory, but control only parts of it. The neighbors fought two wars over the disputed land in the 1940s and 1960s. They also narrowly averted a major conflict in early 2021, with tensions in the region remaining high.

Some 5,071 Ukrainians were detained at US borders in March, figures released by the US Customs and Border Protection on Monday show.

The spike comes amid the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with the botched illegal entry attempts growing fivefold compared to February figures, when just over 1,100 Ukrainians were detained at the border. A vast majority of the detained Ukrainians were caught by the US border guard at the southwest border.

Over the past few years, the flow of Ukrainians detained while attempting to cross into the US each month remained constant, hovering below the 1,000 mark on average, according to official data. The influx of Ukrainians came amid an overall spike in detentions at US sea and air borders. In March, nearly 250,000 people were detained at the borders, compared to some 190,000 in February. A vast majority of the people seeking to get into the US – some 220,000 – were apprehended at the Mexico border.

Many of the detained Ukrainians were ultimately released into USterritory after being granted a humanitarian parole, the Washington Post reported. On Monday, the US administration extended temporary protected status for Ukrainians for another 18 months.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden pledged to take in 100,000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the fighting. Some five million people left the country after Russia launched a large-scale military operation against Ukraine late in February, according to figures from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith led a brigade of 700 British soldiers to Concord, Massachusetts, to search for weapons and ammunition. On the way, Major John Pitcairn and the advanced guard of 300 redcoats encountered 80 men of Captain John Parker's militia company on the Lexington village green.

Pitcairn demanded the militia disperse. As Parker ordered his men to comply someone unknown fired a shot. The British deployed, fired a volley, and charged with fixed bayonets in a short fight that killed eight and wounded ten Americans. After their officers restored order, the redcoats resumed marching to Concord, where Colonel James Barrett had mustered that area's militia and minuteman companies before taking a position on a hill across the Old North Bridge about a mile from town.

As the British searched the town, companies from neighboring communities arrived and formed into battalions. A detachment of redcoats arrived at the bridge, part of which crossed to search Barrett's farm while the rest guarded the span. When the militiamen saw smoke and believed the enemy was burning Concord, Barret ordered his men to load muskets, but only fire if fired upon, and they advanced in column toward the bridge. Captain Walter Laurie's command of three companies

In response, Major John Buttrick excitedly yelled, "Fire, for God's sake, fellow soldiers, fire!"

Their return volley killed three and wounded thirteen British soldiers, including four officers or sergeants. The British retreated back to Lexington where they were reinforced but continued the retreat to Boston in a running fight.

At the end of the day, they were besieged in Boston and the Revolutionary War had begun.

I was driving my little brother to school earlier and when I was about to turn left into the residential street that hosts his campus, a dumb fuck old italian motherfucker became impatient and angry that I didn't want to gun it past kids walking across the street just to get there quicker. I gave him the finger and waved him down to confront me if he had a problem. He then peels off past me in a school zone and then tried brake checking me as I turned into the school parking lot. I was furious. I have never in my life wanted to beat an old man's ass before, but this fucker was really really tempting me. Of course, the 78 year old coward was okay with using his vehicle as a weapon but didn't want to face the consequences of his recklessness around other people's children so he locked himself in the car and stayed there. I don't know if it's the fucking vax, or all these years of bullshit that has caused this population to go insane but I'm so incredibly sick of this state and its people. I don't understand how you can almost be 80 yrs old and still act like this, especially when you're carrying your grandchildren in the vehicle. The Tochka-U operates as a simple inertially-guided ballistic missile. Simply put, the operators, working from a known location, orient the launcher in the direction of their target, and then calculate the distance between the point of launch and point of impact. The solid-fuel engine of the Tochka-U burns for 28 seconds, meaning that the range of the missile isn’t determined by engine burn-time alone, but rather the angle that the missile was launched – the more vertical the missile at time of launch, the shorter its range will be.

Because the missile burns to depletion, once the engine shuts down, the missile will cease its pure ballistic trajectory, and instead assume a near-vertical posture as it heads toward its target…

The flight characteristics of the Tochka-U result in a debris pattern which has the cluster munitions impacting on the ground first, followed by the depleted booster, which hits the earth some distance behind the impact of the warhead. This creates a tell-tale signature, so to speak, of the direction from where the missile was launched, which can be crudely calculated by shooting a reverse azimuth from the point of impact of the warhead through the booster.

It is this physical reality which provides the first real clue as to who fired the Tochka-U that hit Kramatorsk. Therelationship of the booster when it came to earth, when assessed to the impact zone of the cluster munitions, provides a reverse azimuth which, even when factoring in a generous margin of error for potential drift, points to territory that was under the excusive control of the Ukrainian government, which means that there is little doubt that the missile that struck the Kramatorsk train station was fired by a launcher under the operational control of the 19th Missile Brigade, Ukraine’s only Tochka-U-equipped unit. More specifically, a forensic evaluation of the missile debris clearly shows that it was launched by the 19th Ukrainian Missile Brigade, based near Dobropolia, some 45 kilometers from Kramatorsk.

The 19th Missile Brigade is considered a strategic asset, meaning that it responds directly to the orders of the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command. In short, if the missile was, as it appears, fired by the 19th Missile Brigade, it was doing so based on orders given from high up the chain of command. The launch was no accident.

For its part, the Ukrainian government has attempted to flip the script, blaming Russia for an attack using a missile which Russia is on record as having retired from service in 2019…

…There is no question that both Russia and the US are sitting on de facto proof of where the Tochka missile was fired. The US has deployed in the region a variety of intelligence-collection platforms which would have detected the location of the missile at the time of launch, and would also have tracked the ballistic trajectory of the missile as it flew toward its target. Likewise, Russia has deployed numerous advanced surface-to-air missile defense systems, including the advanced S-400, which would have tracked the flight of the missile from launch to impact.

The fact that the US has not declassified this data to replicate a Cuban missile crisis-like moment at the UN to demonstrate to the world the scope and scale of a Russan lie strongly suggests that the Russians are not, in fact, lying.

There is, however,one piece of evidence which proves without a doubt who owned the Tochka-U missilein question that was fired on Kramatorsk, the release of which would not compromise the security interests of the providing nation. Painted onto the booster of the missile, in black, is a unique serial number assigned to the Tochka-U at the time of production (in the Cyrillic alphabet, Ш91579, or Sh91579 in the Latin alphabet.) This serial number was assigned to it at the Votkinsk Machine Building Plant and represents the unique identifying mark for the missile that follows it through its military life cycle…

Strike West as it’s distracted by Ukraine, ISIS tells members

Terror group urges members to strike while the West is distracted

Terrorist group Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) has called on its members and supporters to wage jihad against Europe and Israel while the West is distracted by the war in Ukraine, according to an online message posted cited by the Times on Monday.

Jihadists should strike Europe and Israel while those the group considers “crusaders” are fighting each other, IS' new spokesman Omar al-Muhajir said in the message, released to coincide with Islam’s holy month of Ramadan.

The terror group's mouthpiece told followers to arm themselves, calling for a campaign of revenge for the death of leader Abu Ibrahim al Hashimi al Qurayshi – though he was allegedly killed earlier this year in a US raid, not by Europeans or Israelis.

The slain ISIS head, who had himself replaced founder and fellow US raid target Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, has been replaced by Abu Hasan al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, said to have been selected by his predecessor to become the group's next leader. While Europe is preoccupied with the Ukrainian conflict – and by what this means for their dwindling energy supplies – Israel has largely stayed out of that war. However, it has been scaling up attacks on Palestinians, conducting frequent raids in the West Bank in the wake of two terrorist attacks by ISIS sympathizers. The surge in violence culminated in a confrontation between Israeli police and Palestinians at the al-Aqsa mosque on Friday, which left more than 150 Palestinians injured.

While the recording included talk of “liberating” Jerusalem through the formation of a caliphate – one of the group’s favorite talking points – experts cited by the Times no longer believe ISIS has the ability to conduct major operations abroad. Declared officially defeated by then-US President Donald Trump in 2019 with the killing of al-Baghdadi, the group has been relegated to a relatively small area in Syria, a country in which it once held significant territory, after years of fighting by the Syrian Arab Army, Russia, Iran, and the US.

However, an offshoot of the group, known as ISIS-K, carried out a suicide bombing at Kabul airport in Afghanistan during the US efforts to evacuate its service members and leave the country after 20 years of war. Several attacks in Europe have been attributed to ISIS sympathizers, including the brutal slaying of UK MP David Amess.

US base in Syria attacked from inside

Planted explosives and not artillery are behind the incident at Green Village, the US military said

Last week’s explosions at a base in Syria, that reportedly injured four US soldiers, may have been the work of charges planted by one or more people in the facility's showers and ammunition depot, Washington has claimed. The incident, which was initially blamed on artillery fire, is being investigated further.

Combined Joint Task Force Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR), the group in charge of US operations in Iraq and Syria, posted a statement early Friday that what was originally classified as an “indirect attack” is now believed to have been “deliberate placement of explosive charges” by an unknown individual or individuals, targeting the shower facility and ammunition holding area.

The CJTF-OIR initially said, “two rounds of indirect fire… struck two support buildings” at Green Village on April 7, and that four US service members were “being evaluated for minor injuries and possible traumatic brain injuries.”

Originally established to coordinate the US-led coalition against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in Syria and Iraq, the CJTF-OIR is now in charge of several hundred US troops in eastern Syria. They are overseeing the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) militia, which controls areas east of the Euphrates and has so far refused reunification with the government in Damascus.

While the remaining US troops in Syria and Iraq have previously come under rocket and mortar attacks – which the Pentagon has blamed either on IS holdouts or Shia militias allegedly allied with Iran – having explosives planted on a base is a new development. The Military Times said on Friday it raised the prospects of infiltration, a lapse in base security, or perhaps even an insider attack.

Three US Navy sailors have died on an aircraft carrier in less than a week, with officials saying the tragedies are all unrelated.

The deaths happened on the USS George Washington earlier this month, with two of the three victims so-far identified.

They are Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Natasha Huffman, who died on April 10 and Retail Services Specialist 3rd Class Mika'il Rayshawn Sharp who passed away on April 9, both on separate undisclosed locations off the ship.

Both sailors were 23. The third victim was found unresponsive on April 15. Their identity has yet to be released. All died on the USS George Washington while it was in dry dock in Newport News, Virginia, where it has been undergoing refurbishments since 2017.

No causes of death have been shared, although Navy officials say more information is forthcoming, and have deployed a rapid response psychiatric team on board the vessel to try and avoid further tragedies.
