Jack Dorsey rips Twitter board

The platform’s co-founder has criticized the company’s ‘poison pill’ strategy to stave off a takeover by Elon Musk

Twitter co-founder and outgoing board member Jack Dorsey blasted the social media platform’s board of directors on Saturday over its tactics in trying to prevent a takeover by Elon Musk.

Dorsey – who stepped down as CEO in November and is due to leave the board next month – engaged in a dialogue with Twitter users who were commenting on a tweet by venture capitalist Garry Tan, who posted on the same day: “The wrong partner on your board can literally make a billion dollars in value evaporate.”

The tweet was referring to last week’s enactment by the Twitter board of directors of the ‘poison pill’ strategy, a plan to stave off a potential takeover by Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and the world’s richest man, according to Forbes. Musk offered to buy the company earlier in April. Tan went on to suggest that the wrong partner causes “a surprising percentage” of start-up failures.

A poison pill is a tactic used by companies to fend off a hostile takeover by diluting the stake of the entity attempting the takeover.

“Good boards don’t create good companies, but a bad board will kill a company every time,” one user said.

“Big facts,” Dorsey replied.

“If [sic] look into the history of [the] Twitter board, it’s intriguing as I was a witness on its early beginnings, mired in plots and coups, and particularly amongst Twitter’s founding members. I wish if [sic] it could be made into a Hollywood thriller one day,” another person tweeted, to which Dorsey said, “It’s consistently been the dysfunction of the company.”

“Are you allowed to say this?” another user asked.

“No,” Dorsey replied.

Dorsey served as CEO during Twitter’s first 18 months, after the company was founded in 2006, but, according toNick Bilton, a New York Times journalistand author of a book on the platform’s nascent years,

Dorsey was “kicked out because he had no idea how to run a company.” In his column in Vanity Fair in November,Bilton alleged that Dorsey was ousted as CEO this time as well.

Chaffetz: Durham Laying Bare ‘Incestuous Relationship’ In Case Regarding Clinton Campaign Lawyer

ohn Durham, the special counsel appointed by then-Attorney General William Barr to investigate the origins of the so-called ‘Russiagate’ counterintelligence probe into then-GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, is finding evidence of an “incestuous relationship,” a former House Republican claimed on Sunday.

Jason Chaffetz, who was the guest host of Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” discussed the latest developments in Durham’s probe with current members of Congress, with an emphasis on Democrat cybersecurity attorney Michael Sussmann:

…Sussmann was representing the Clinton campaign when in 2016 he passed along information to an FBI counsel. His lawyers say the documents “raised national security concerns” while prosecutors describe them as purportedly detailing a covert channel between a Russian bank and the business of Donald Trump, Clinton’s rival at the time.

Sussmann was charged with lying to the FBI because he falsely told the counsel he was not providing the allegations to the FBI on behalf of any client despite presenting the information on behalf of the Clinton campaign, prosecutors say.

“Special Counsel John Durham asserted in a court filing Friday that the CIA concluded data from Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussmann alleging coordination between Donald Trump and Russia was ‘not technically plausible’ and was ‘user-created,'” Fox News reported.

“In the filing, Durham responded to objections from Sussmann’s defense regarding what evidence could be admissible at Sussmann’s trial, which is scheduled to begin next month. Sussmann is accused of lying to the FBI by saying he was not attending a meeting on behalf of a particular client when he was actually presenting the information on behalf of the Hillary Clinton campaign and a technology executive with whom he worked,” the report added.

The Fox report added:

Durham in February first revealed that the government would establish during trial that among the data “exploited” was domain name system (DNS) internet traffic pertaining to “a particular healthcare provider, Trump Tower, Donald Trump’s Central Park West apartment building, and the Executive Office of the President of the United States (EOP).”

In February, Durham said data was exploited “by mining the EOP’s DNS traffic and other data for the purpose of gathering derogatory information about Donald Trump,” adding the data was used to establish “an inference” and “narrative” tying Trump to Russia.

In addition, Sussmann was also representing a person known in Durham’s court filings as “Tech Executive-1,” now known to be former Neustar executive Rodney Joffe. He is accused of concealing them from then-FBI general counsel James Baker in September 2016 when he presented internet data that suggested a now-debunked Trump-Russia link, the Washington Examiner reports.

“The allegation here is that Michael Sussmann got in with a meeting with the general counsel there at the Federal Bureau of Investigation by representing that he wasn’t representing anybody,” Chaffetz, a former GOP representative from Utah, said during an interview with Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.).

“But there’s other documentation and flow of money and logs and whatnot,” he added. “That’s why this is a case that is important because these people had this incestuous relationship to be able to actually go in and access things that other people that are on the receiving end of these — of these types of prosecutions don’t get to do.”

EU turns to Africa for help

Europe is looking to Africa for its energy needs as countries seek to cut reliance on Russian imports amid the conflict in Ukraine, according to media reports.

The EU’s third-largest economy, Italy, secured a deal last week with Algeria for more natural gas imports. The North African country already supplies gas to Europe via three pipelines, one of which goes to Italy. The two other pipelines are linked to Spain.

Italian energy supermajor Eni also signed an agreement on Wednesday with Egypt’s state-owned Natural Gas Holding Company to promote gas exports to Europe.

The deals come following a meeting between European ambassadors and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) last Monday, to “strengthen partnership” in the energy sector.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi is expected to travel to central and southern Africa this week with potential deals in the Republic of Congo and Angola, Bloomberg reported, citing sources. All of these deals together could help to replace over half the supply Italy gets from Russia as early as 2023, according to Bloomberg.

Russia supplies around 40% of the EU’s gas and provides around a third of the bloc’s oil needs. Earlier in April, the European Union approved a ban on Russian coal, but could not reach an agreement on an oil and natural gas embargo.

Draghi told the Corriere della Sera newspaper on Sunday that Europe can wean itself off Russian energy imports through diversification in a time frame that was “shorter than what we imagined just a month ago.”

The PM added: “We no longer want to depend on Russian gas, because economic dependence must not become political subjugation. To do this, we need to diversify energy sources and find new suppliers.”

1. Arkaim

It is considered to be the ancestral home of ancient Aryans and is one of the main spiritual places of the country. There is a Mountain of Love around which fly flocks of rooks. 4. Olkhon Island in Baikal

Narrative:

To Push Back Russians, Ukrainians Hit a Village With Cluster Munitions

Reality:

Ukraine shells own village of Husarivka, using internationally banned weapons.

HUSARIVKA, Ukraine — It was in early March when the spent warhead of a cluster munition rocket landed next to Yurii Doroshenko’s home in eastern Ukraine, having dispensed its lethal bomblets over his village.

“They were shelling and it hit the street,” he said.

These types of internationally banned weapons have been repeatedly used by the Russian military since it invaded Ukraine in February. Human rights groups have denounced their use. Western leaders have linked their presence to a bevy of war-crimes allegations leveled at Moscow.

But the cluster munition that landed to next to Mr. Doroshenko’s house was not fired by Russian forces. Based on evidence reviewed by The New York Times during a visit to the area, it is very likely to have been launched by the Ukrainian troops who were trying to retake the area.

Nobody died in that strike in Husarivka, an agricultural hamlet surrounded by wheat fields and natural-gas lines, though at least two people were killed as Ukrainian forces shelled it for the better part of month, targeting Russian forces.

Cluster munitions — a class of weapon comprising rockets, bombs, missiles, mortar and artillery shells — split open midair and dispense smaller bomblets over a wide area. The hazard to civilians remains significant until any unexploded munitions have been located and properly disposed of by experts.

The Convention on Cluster Munitions, which took effect in 2010, bans their use because of the indiscriminate harm they can cause to civilians: Humanitarian groups have noted that 20 percent or more of antipersonnel submunitions fail to detonate on impact, yet they can explode later if they are picked up or handled.

More than 100 nations have signed the pact, though the United States, Ukraine and Russia have not.

“It’s not surprising, but it’s definitely dismaying to hear that evidence has emerged indicating that Ukraine may have used cluster munitions in this current conflict,” said Mary Wareham, advocacy director of the arms division at Human Rights Watch. “Cluster munitions are unacceptable weapons that are killing and maiming civilians across Ukraine.”

An adviser to the Ukrainian armed forces and the Ministry of Defense declined to comment.

Russian troops had seized Husarivka from Ukrainian units in the first few days of March, occupying buildings on its outskirts and near its center. The 220-millimeter Uragan artillery rocket that landed near Mr. Doroshenko’s home — fired from a truck-mounted launcher many miles away — struck on either March 6 or 7, said Mr. Doroshenko, the town’s informal leader.

By that point, the village was well under Russian control.

During a visit around the property and Mr. Doroshenko’s street on Thursday, Times reporters viewed large pieces of the artillery rocket that dispensed the cluster munitions, confirming the type of weapon that had been fired. It landed near the Russian army’s makeshift headquarters in an adjacent farm workshop, residents said, meaning the Russian forces were almost certainly the target.

Throughout the occupation, Ukrainian forces incessantly shelled the Russian troops there, and at least two of the same type of cluster munition were lodged in a field by Mr. Doroshenko’s home, just a few hundred yards away from the Russians’ headquarters.

The rockets fell around a small neighborhood of a dozen or so single-story homes interspersed with small gardens.

As the rockets neared the farm, their warheads — probably carrying 30 antipersonnel bomblets apiece — would have separated from the weapons’ solid rocket motors, breaking open and casting their deadly cargo across the neighborhood.

These small munitions each contain the equivalent of about 11 ounces of TNT, slightly less than twice as much as a standard hand grenade.

The attack on the Husarivka farm appears to be the first use of a cluster munition by Ukrainian troops since the Russian invasion began on Feb. 24. In 2015, Ukrainian forces used cluster munitions during the opening months of their war against Russian-backed separatists in the country’s east.

President Joe Biden announced Friday he plans to nominate Michael Barr, the dean of the University of Michigan's public policy school, to be the Federal Reserve's vice chairman of supervision.
