It was an attention-grabbing assertion that made headlines around the world: U.S. officials said they had indications suggesting Russia might be preparing to use chemical agents in Ukraine.

President Joe Biden later said it publicly. But three U.S. officials told NBC News this week there is no evidence Russia has brought any chemical weapons near Ukraine. They said the U.S. released the information to deter Russia from using the banned munitions.

It’s one of a string of examples of the Biden administration’s breaking with recent precedent by deploying declassified intelligence as part of an information war against Russia. The administration has done so even when the intelligence wasn’t rock solid, officials said, to keep Russian President Vladimir Putin off balance. Coordinated by the White House National Security Council, the unprecedented intelligence releases have been so frequent and voluminous, officials said, that intelligence agencies had to devote more staff members to work on the declassification process, scrubbing the information so it wouldn’t betray sources and methods.

Observers of all stripes have called it a bold and so far successful strategy — although not one without risks.

It doesn’t have to be solid intelligence when we talk about it,” a U.S. official said. “It’s more important to get out ahead of them — Putin specifically — before they do something. It’s preventative. We don’t always want to wait until the intelligence is 100 percent certainty that they are going to do something. We want to get out ahead to stop them.

Actor Sean Penn went on Fox News host Sean Hannity's show on Tuesday night to argue that America mustn't be "intimidated" from using nuclear weapons against Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.

Both Seans' statements are supreme idiocy as the threat of nuclear annihilation is a constant for both of our nations, as is mutually assured destruction.

Ukraine had every opportunity to make peace with Russia and declare itself a neutral country but instead the Zelensky regime threatened to acquire nuclear weapons, took billions in arms shipments from the US and insisted on pushing to join NATO.

This whole conflict could have been easily avoided if Ukraine and the regime in Washington, DC listened to folks like John Mearsheimer but instead they kept poking the bear.

Penn, Hannity and the rest of the neocons demanding the US enter World War III over this conflict should all be forced to register as foreign agents.

Danish Merc Confirms Ukrainian Forces are Killing Russian PoWs

Moscow has accused the Ukrainian military and neo-Nazi battalion fighters of acts of sadism against captured Russian military personnel, with Ukrainian forces themselves openly posting multiple videos of Russian PoWs being tortured and killed in cold blood.

A Danish ‘volunteer’ fighting in Ukraine has confirmed to local media that Ukrainian forces have been killing Russian forces.

“I’ve heard about one successful prisoner exchange, and that’s it. People are being killed,” the fighter, using the pseudonym ‘Jonas’, told Denmark’s TV2. The channel confirmed that that it knows his real identity, and that he really is in Ukraine.

The fighter said he spoke to some of the captured Russian PoWs before their execution. He said one of the troops was an 18-year-old Russian who worked as a computer programmer. “The following morning he was buried. These things follow you,” he said.

‘Jonas’ distanced himself from the war crimes, and insisted that he did not personally participate in the killings of captured Russian troops.

International laws of warfare to which both Russia and Ukraine are signatories prohibit the killing of captured combatants, and demands that they be treated humanely and be provided medical attention if required. The execution of prisoners of war is prohibited.

‘Jonas’ said he’s an experienced sniper with military training and experience in several conflicts around the world, and claims to have killed nearly 100 Russians during his time in Ukraine. “I did what I could. Let’s put it this way,” he said. The mercenary also said that his family back in Denmark was proud of him, and that his father was “happy to hear” that he would be travelling to Ukraine to fight.

The mercenary also spoke about the fallout from the Russian precision missile strike on the military base in western Ukraine in March, saying about half of the foreigners at the base chose to leave the country after the strike.

The Danish government has allowed its citizens to go fight in Ukraine without facing any legal consequences. Despite being widely described in media as “volunteers,” many of the foreign nationals fighting in Ukraine are being paid, whether by private businessmen, GoFundMe campaigns, job postings on sites such as Silent Professionals, or, reportedly, by Ukraine directly.

Governor-General personally lobbied Scott Morrison about leadership program given $18m in funding

The Governor-General David Hurley personally lobbied Prime Minister Scott Morrison about a leadership program that was later allocated more than $18 million in federal funding.

Key points:

Mr Hartley boasted about how the Governor-General had delivered a PowerPoint presentation to Mr Morrison

His foundation has been allocated $18 million in funding over the next five years

One source said Mr Hartley's program would benefit "privileged white kids"

Last week's budget included the money for the Australian Future Leaders Foundation Limited, which claimed to have the support of an impressive list of business leaders, was only registered as a charity in April 2021 and is yet to run any leadership programs.

It has been spearheaded by Chris Hartley, who some suggest has used the foundation to climb the social ladder.

The federal opposition is demanding to know why the foundation deserved the funding, which includes $3.6 million this financial year.

"The government should explain why it is that we've got $18 million paid over to an entity which as yet doesn't seem to be operational," Labor senator Penny Wong said.

For the past two years Mr Hartley, who is one of the three directors of the foundation and its secretary, gathered support for his leadership program and successfully asked the Governor-General to pitch the proposal to the Prime Minister.

The ABC has seen correspondence in which Mr Hartley boasted that the Governor-General had given a PowerPoint presentation to Mr Morrison in late 2020.

Mr Hartley said in the correspondence that Mr Morrison was on board with the project and asked his office to press ahead with it.

In another email seen by the ABC, Mr Hartley said that the Prime Minister's Office would "own" the project.

A spokesperson for the Governor-General confirmed there had been "several conversations" between him and Mr Morrison dating back to 2020.

"Ultimately public funding is a decision for the government. The Governor-General will continue to advocate for the program and support it once it is launched."

Promotional material seen by the ABC declared the "Governor-General's Australian Future Leaders Programme" had the in-principle support, including financial and in-kind commitments, of numerous senior leaders from different organisations and groups including Twitter, Tabcorp, Jaguar Land Rover, the Business Council, the Smith Family and Accenture.

Michigan's Democratic governor sues to get rid of 1931 state ban on abortion

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) said Thursday she has filed a lawsuit to have the state supreme court decide whether Michigan's constitution protects the right to abortion.

The governor is challenging a 1931 state law that bans abortion at all stages of pregnancy but has not been enforced in the state since the U.S. Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Planned Parenthood of Michigan has filed a concurrent lawsuit against the same law.

“In the coming weeks, we will learn if the U.S. Supreme Court decides to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Whitmer said in a statement. “If Roe is overturned, abortion could become illegal in Michigan in nearly any circumstance—including in cases of rape and incest— and deprive Michigan women of the ability to make critical health care decisions for themselves. This is no longer theoretical: it is reality. That’s why I am filing a lawsuit and using my executive authority to urge the Michigan Supreme Court to immediately resolve whether Michigan’s state constitution protects the right to abortion."

She explained that she would use her executive authority to go directly to the state supreme court, rather than through the lower courts or the Republican-controlled legislature. The high court has a 4-3 majority of Democrat-nominated justices.

Whitmer wants the court to recognize a constitutional right to abortion under the due process clause of the Michigan constitution. She is also asking for the court to prevent the state government from enforcing the 1931 abortion ban, which does not include exceptions for rape or incest.

"The abortion ban violates Michigan’s due process clause, which provides a right to privacy and bodily autonomy that is violated by the state’s near-total criminal ban of abortion. It also violates Michigan’s Equal Protection Clause due to the way the ban denies women equal rights because the law was adopted to reinforce antiquated notions of the proper role for women in society," the governor's office argues.

Whitmer's lawsuit was filed in anticipation that the 6-3 majority of Republican-nominated justices on the U.S. Supreme Court will either overturn Roe or create new restrictions on the right to abortion this summer with a ruling on Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban. Michigan is one of 26 states that have so-called "trigger" laws on the books that would ban or severely restrict abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

“Overturning Roe will criminalize abortion and impact nearly 2.2 million Michigan women. If a woman is forced to continue a pregnancy against her will, it can have devastating consequences, including keeping families in poverty and making it harder for women and families to make ends meet," Whitmer said.

NATO Chief Says Sweden, Finland Could ‘Easily Join’ Its Ranks If They Apply

If Finland and Sweden decide to apply for NATO membership, all allies of the defensive alliance would quickly welcome both Nordic countries, said NATO’s top civilian official.

“It’s for them to decide of course, but if they apply, I expect that all allies will welcome them,” Jens Stoltenberg told a Wednesday news conference in Brussels. “We know that they can easily join this alliance if they decide to apply.”

Pekka Haavisto, Finland’s foreign minister, announced on Thursday after meeting NATO foreign ministers in the Belgian capital that it will clarify the next steps in a possible NATO membership in the coming weeks.

While Finland hasn’t expressed a strong interest in joining NATO for decades, a sudden U-turn in public opinion to apply for NATO membership shifted after an opinion poll last month by Finnish broadcaster YLE showed that, for the first time, more than 50 percent of Finns support joining the Western military alliance.

In neighboring Sweden, a similar poll showed that those in favor of NATO membership outnumber those against it.

Haavisto said his country’s lawmakers are due this month to debate a government white paper on security, including an option for NATO accession. He said Russia’s attack on Ukraine has changed public opinion.

Both Nordic countries are part of the European Union, but not NATO. However, they cooperate closely with the bloc and allow, among other things, for the alliance’s troops to exercise on their soil.

Stoltenberg said the military alliance might be prepared to provide security guarantees to the two neutral nations if they face threats by Russia upon joining NATO.

Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign minister, warned in February that Sweden and Finland would face “serious military and political repercussions” if they were to join NATO.
