Paedophile ex-DJ Ray Teret who was Jimmy Savile's 'shadow' died from cancer in Strangeways

Ray Teret was jailed for 25 years in 2014 for a string of historical sex offences

A paedophile and rapist ex-DJ died in Strangeways prison following a battle with cancer, an inquest has heard.

Ray Teret, 79, died on the medical wing at HMP Manchester on May 5 of last year.

He was jailed for 25 years in 2014 for a string of historical sex offences against 11 women.

Teret, also known as Raymond Terrett, had been found guilty by a jury of raping and indecently assaulting impressionable teenage girls over a 35-year period from the 1960s onwards.

He was convicted of seven rapes and 11 indecent assaults.

Teret was mentored by TV presenter Jimmy Savile in the early days of his career, and became known as Savile's 'shadow' and acted as Savile's chauffeur.

An inquest at Manchester Coroners Court this week (February 2) heard that Teret had been diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer while in prison.

His condition worsened and he had been receiving palliative care.

A 'do not resuscitate' order was in place when he was found unresponsive in bed during a routine medical check at about 11.15pm on May 4.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics in the early hours of the following morning.

In a statement read out in court, Dr Alex Adelakun, from North Manchester General Hospital, gave Teret's cause of death as 'advanced terminal colon cancer'.

At the inquest, Teret's occupation was given as 'a professional DJ', who ran his own business.

Recording his verdict, assistant coroner John Hobson ruled that Teret had died from 'natural causes'.

He said he was satisfied he had received the 'most appropriate' standard of care for his illness.

No next of kin were present at the brief hearing.

The anti-Trump political organization the Lincoln Project has settled a court case over accusations of sexual misconduct by one of its founders, John Weaver.

The court case was filed by former employee Jennifer Horn, who said the group refused to address allegations that Weaver had engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior toward young men and teens — including a 14-year-old boy — and even told her to keep quiet about the allegations.

Horn received $375,000, according to a report Wednesday by The Washington Free Beacon. The outlet said she was paid $250,000 in one installment and the rest in installments of $25,000 each.

Horn was the former chairwoman of the New Hampshire GOP and the lone female co-founder of the Lincoln Project, but she resigned a year ago amid allegations that Weaver had made unwanted sexual advances toward more than 20 young men and boys.

A Jan. 31, 2021, report in The New York Times said that Weaver had spent years sending “unsolicited and sexually provocative messages online to young men, often while suggesting he could help them get work in politics.”

Horn spoke out about the accusations, but representatives of the Lincoln Project claimed that she was doing so because of a dispute over her pay.

Still, she said other founders of the organization were fully aware of Weaver’s behavior but refused to do anything about it.

Horn also alleged that she was “demeaned” and “lied to” after she tried to raise the alarm inside the organization.

In an attempt to undermine her story, the Lincoln Project published Horn’s exchanges with a journalist, but it later deleted the tweets.

“When I spoke to one of the founders to raise my objections and concerns, I was yelled at, demeaned and lied to,” Horn said, according to the Times.

She also said she was “never part of, or included in, the Lincoln Project’s inner circle” and she was only “earning a small fraction of what some of my male counterparts did.”

With the turmoil, Horn said, she was pressured to resign.

She was not the only Lincoln Project insider who attacked Weaver after the allegations of sexual misconduct were revealed.

Co-founder Steve Schmidt, who also resigned from the group, claimed that he was “incandescently angry” about the allegations.

“I detest John Weaver in a way I can’t articulate,” Schmidt said in a statement.

“My heart breaks that young men felt unseen and unheard in an organization that I started. I am ashamed of it,” he added.

The Lincoln Project distanced itself from Weaver, but Horn sued.

The big payout to her comes at an inopportune time for the group as the November midterm elections loom. With hundreds of thousands of dollars no longer in its accounts to use for its anti-Trump activities and donations drying up, the Lincoln Project is in bad shape.

Born out of abject hatred for Donald Trump in 2019, the group has more recently found its friends dwindling. Even many of its Democratic friends have fled.

The organization also drew heavy fire in October for the strange and tasteless stunt of planting fake protesters outside the campaign bus of Glenn Youngkin, the Republican running for governor of Virginia. The fake protesters were dressed in outfits meant to emulate the far-right extremists who were involved in the Charlottesville violence in 2017.

Members of the group later admitted that they were behind the sick deed.

Pope’s Private Letter Reveals Early Involvement in Power Struggle

Documents released by WikiLeaks today shed light on a power struggle within the highest offices of the Catholic Church. Amongst the documents is a private letter written by Pope Francis. The existence of this letter, addressed to the papal envoy Cardinal Raymond Burke, has been the source of much speculation in the media [1]. It is now published for the first time in full and with the Pope’s signature.

This letter concerns the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, also known as the Order of Malta or the Knights of Malta, originally founded in Jerusalem during the Crusades in 1099. As the name indicates, it has been widely recognised as a sovereign entity in itself despite theoretically being subject to papal authority as a Catholic institution.

This ambiguous status cuts to the heart of the dispute as it reached a fever pitch after Pope Francis forced the abdication of Matthew Festing as Prince and Grand Master of the Order in January 2017. A month earlier Festing had dismissed the Order’s Grand Chancellor Albrecht Freiherr von Boeselager.

The reason for the dismissal is said to be that Boeselager, who served as health minister for the Order, was held personally responsible for having approved funds for an aid mission in Africa that distributed condoms, amongst other things. This directly contravenes Church teachings on contraception and Festing was adamant that Boeselager be held responsible.

Boeselager, however, appealed to Pope Francis, who in turn deeply undermined the Order’s independence and sovereignty by appointing a papal commission to investigate the matter and report back to the Holy See. Boeselager was subsequently reinstated at the same time as Festing was ousted. The papal letter, published by WikiLeaks today, shows the Pope was aware of and involved in the dispute since at least November 2016 when he met with Cardinal Burke.

The Pope’s dramatic moves in January 2017 effectively abolished the sovereignty of the Order and have been described by its harshest critics as the annexation of one country (the Order) by another (the Holy See) [2]. Members of the Order even went so far as to challenge papal authority on the matter and refused to co-operate with the Vatican’s investigation [3]. This is seen by many observers as part of a larger power struggle between conservative and liberal elements within the Church, represented by Festing and Boeselager respectively (for example, [4]).

Adding yet more intrigue to the tale are rumours that some high-ranking members of the Order have also attended Masonic lodges or other organisations deemed suspect by the Church [5]. Some of this seems to be confirmed by the Pope’s letter, which is dated 1 December 2016 (over a month before Boeselager was reinstated and Festing dismissed).

In the letter Pope Francis states: “In particular, members of the Order must avoid secular and frivoulous (sic) behaviour, such as membership to associations, movements and organisations which are contrary to the Catholic faith and/or of a relativist nature.” He goes on to state that any members of such organisations need to be removed from the Order.

Regarding the condom scandal at the heart of this matter, the Pope states: “I would be very disappointed if ‒ as you told me ‒ some of the high Officers were aware of practices such as the distribution of any type of contraceptive and have not yet intervened to end such things.” He further states that: “I have no doubts that by following the principle of Paul and speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), the matter can be discussed with the Officers and the necessary rectification obtained.”

The letter also confirms that Cardinal Burke had an audience with the Pope on 10 November 2016 to discuss the mounting crisis. This was before Boeselager was even removed by Festing. The text of the letter makes clear that the Pope was already committed to asserting his authority over the Order at this early stage. He writes: “Your Eminence, together with the leaders of the Order, will have to make ever more clear the close connection which unites the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to the Roman Pontiff, both from a structural and operational point-of-view.” Along with the Pope’s letter to Cardinal Burke, WikiLeaks has published several other documents relating to the dispute. These include internal communications and memos, some of which have been quoted in the media.

Variations in regional data systems both reflect and determine developments in the economy, security and society.

The report explores how this might change and builds 4 plausible scenarios for 2030, to help decision-makers form ambitious strategies that are resilient to the uncertainties that prevail.

Key messages from the report:

the UK government should seek to clearly articulate what it wants to achieve with its data system, to help navigate the uncertain future landscape

it will be important to take a holistic approach to data systems, and consider the complex interactions between different components of the system

trade-offs between competing policy objectives will need to be made consciously and transparently

Tow truck companies rejecting Ottawa police request for help: source

Local towing companies are rejecting Ottawa police requests for help towing ‘Freedom Convoy’ trucks out of the downtown core, according to a senior police source.

The source told CTV News Ottawa that even if police decided to tow the trucks from the downtown streets they have been clogging up for the past week, they wouldn’t have enough tow trucks to do it.

Police outreach to tow truck companies across the city has been rebuffed, the source said.

The source said police are considering launching a criminal investigation into whether intimidation of the tow truck companies is leading to their lack of cooperation with police.

Police would only have access to city-owned tow trucks used for OC Transpo buses, of which there are a limited number.

Asked about the concern on Friday, Mayor Jim Watson said that information had not been brought to him, but the city has its own fleet of tow trucks.

“All contingency plans are being worked on,” he told CTV News on Friday. “The city has a number of heavy industrial tow trucks as well, so there’s that availability, plus other companies that the city deals with on a pretty regular basis.”

Ottawa Police Deputy Chief Steve Bell said Friday there are between 200 and 250 trucks parked in the downtown core.

Police expect another 300 to 400 truck drivers to try making their way downtown this weekend, but they are setting up roadblocks and planning to direct the truckers to parking spots outside the core.

Until now, the police strategy with the remaining truckers was primarily one of negotiation. That succeeded in reducing their numbers throughout the week.

Friday morning, police said they are adopting a “surge and contain strategy,” which includes sending 150 more officers to affected neighbourhoods and barricading the protest “red zone” to cut off people who want to drive downtown.

U.S. biotech firm Moderna and the nonprofit International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) are exploring the use of mRNA technology, which prompts the body to make a protein that triggers an immune response (the technology also is used in Pfizer’s coronavirus shot). Researchers will monitor 56 HIV-negative adults for six months in the Phase 1 clinical trial, typically the first step in a long road to study the safety and efficacy of a vaccine.

George Washington University, one of the sites where the trial is taking place, described it as the first human trial of a mRNA-based HIV vaccine.

Nearly four decades of research and advocacy have produced medications that transformed HIV into a manageable virus, although there still is no vaccine to help prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths a year. Dozens of attempts have been abandoned before preclinical or clinical stages of evaluation, but the HIV research helped hone technologies that were repurposed against covid-19.

The coronavirus pandemic has marshaled global resources, and billions of dollars from governments and private companies, into research into coronavirus vaccines, which were fast-tracked and developed in record time.

Scientists have sought to harness that momentum in the long-standing battle against other threats. In October, the World Health Organization endorsed the world’s first malaria vaccine for use in children — production of that vaccine was slowed by the difficulty of targeting a parasite and securing funding to prevent a disease most destructive in poorer parts of the world.

Last year, a broad study that had raised hopes of a vaccine for HIV ended in failure after an interim analysis showed it was no more effective than a placebo. It was the seventh full-scale human trial of a vaccine for HIV, which newly infected 1.5 million people worldwide in 2020, according to U.N. data.

HIV integrates itself into the body’s cells, meaning a vaccine has to start working immediately to rout it.

The new trial in the United States, which Moderna announced began on Thursday, will test a hypothesis that delivering HIV immunogens — proteins that elicit an immune response to HIV — through mRNA technology can spur the body to produce antibodies that neutralize a range of HIV variants.

This “is widely considered to be a goal of HIV vaccination, and this is the first step in that process,” the company said in a statement. Forty-eight participants will get one or two doses of the vaccine, with 32 of them also taking a booster shot. The other eight volunteers will receive only the booster.

“The search for an HIV vaccine has been long and challenging, Mark Feinberg, the president of IAVI, said in a statement. “Having new tools in terms of immunogens and platforms could be the key to making rapid progress toward an urgently needed, effective HIV vaccine.”
