Cause of Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh Building fire remains a mystery despite a new report

In early October of last year, daily Scottish newspaper The Herald published a story with the tantalizing headline: “Glasgow School of Art Fire: Is the truth behind the blaze about to be revealed?”

Several months later—and nearly four years after the devastating fire in question tore through the Glasgow School of Art (GSA)’s famed Mackintosh Building—there is now an official response to The Herald’s leading query. The answer is a frustrating “probably not.”

Yesterday, Scottish Fire and Rescue (SFRS) published its anticipated report on the June 2018 blaze that destroyed the Mackintosh Building, a Category A-listed British Art Nouveau-style landmark designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in phases from 1896 through 1906. At the time of the fire, the building was particularly vulnerable as it was nearing the end of a careful, nearly $50 million restoration effort led by Scottish firm Page/Park Architects to repair damage incurred during a previous fire that ripped through the historic building in May 2014.

Per the SFRS report, answers to “how” and “why” the second catastrophic fire occurred will likely never be known as the official cause remains classified as “undetermined.” Although it did not result in any serious injuries or deaths, the blaze was so ferocious and so widespread (it also damaged neighboring buildings) that investigators were left unable to make any conclusive determinations. More than 120 firefighters responded to the blaze with firefighting operations continuing for 10 days.

As reported by the BBC, residents and businesses along Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street continue to grapple with the devastating impact of the fire, which has only been compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Per the Guardian, the coordinated effort to determine a definitive cause of the 2018 inferno at the GSA ranks as the “most complex and resource-intensive” in the history of the SFRS. Spanning 172 weeks, the investigation involved extensive excavation work and the forensic examination of recovered debris, the examination of CCTV and photographic photograph footage, and the analysis of key witness testimonies.

Explained Ross Haggart, deputy chief officer at the SFRS, in an official statement:

“Due to the nature of the ongoing restoration and construction works combined with other factors such as the air supply into the building, the fire was unfortunately able to take hold, spread and ultimately cause catastrophic damage.

This presented a number of challenges to our investigation, namely working within a structurally dangerous site to physically examine hundreds of tonnes of debris, which was up to four metres in height and heavily compacted.

We scrutinised every aspect of this fire to ensure our investigation was as robust and thorough as possible.

Unfortunately, almost everything within the building was severely damaged or consumed in the fire and that included any potential items of evidence that could have provided those answers.”

Haggart concluded: “We were unable to find sufficient evidence to support any credible origin and it has not been possible to establish a definitive cause. However we have made a number of recommendations including the introduction of new mechanisms to enhance information sharing around ongoing construction projects within Scotland to ensure the safety of our firefighters and our communities.”

Although the SFRS noted that it could not fully rule out electrical failure, accidental ignition, or willful fire-raising (a Scottish offense similar to arson) as potential causes, the fact the years-long inquiry ended, like it started, with a giant question mark, prompting dismay and disappointment from GSA and governmental officials like.

Paul Sweeney, a parliamentary member of the Scottish Labour and Co-operative Party representing Glasgow and board member of the Glasgow City Heritage Trust, has been particularly vocal in expressing his frustrations regarding both the results of the inquiry and the sluggish pace of rebuilding efforts. Speaking to the Guardian, he lamented that the SRFS report was “hardly worth the wait and tells us nothing we couldn’t have deduced from a cursory glance at aerial photographs.”

“This is the single biggest disaster to hit Scotland’s built heritage in a century and lack of pace and grip shown by the authorities from the School of Art itself to the Scottish government has been nothing short of disgraceful,” he said. “Three years on and it is still not clear when are contracts going to be awarded, is it financed, will the insurance pay out, are we appointing people to get this back on track?

My theory on the Glasgow School of art is that it was burnt down by some branch of the intelligence services.

In the 2 weeks running up the the June 2018 fire there was really strong press coverage that was pro-independence and pro-Sturgeon. Her narrative was acting as a counterpoint to Brexit and I reckon they torched the building to both shift the news cycle and also destroy an important piece of Scottish Heritage. Further more the first time it burnt down was May 2014, right in middle of indy ref debate.

Now this may seem perfectly innocent, but some questions remain:

Mirko won this court case, but it was under very strange circumstances. He put a company into business rescue in order to avoid creditors.

Mirko also has a trust called THE HERMES TRUST which is at Investec Private Bank. Registered 1998 or 1999.

If you search for more on Mirko on Google, its all gone, but if you search on DuckDuckGo.com, you may find quite a bit of information on him. He has spent years having everything on him removed.

There is a large group of people whom he has scammed and stolen from over the years. It is easily 50 to 100 people. Many people out of jobs because of this thief.

2. Jorje Pringle is linked to Retired ex Brigadier General McGill Alexander. They attended school together.

This general became a diplomat and in the late 90s he was held hostage in Taiwan. This can be found on the internet

The general works with foster kids. But is this legit or is there something more sinister going on here?

Scotland faces border checks with England if it rejoins the EU – think tank

LONDON (Reuters) – Scotland will need checkpoints along its border with England for the first time in more than three centuries if it votes for independence and rejoins the European Union, according to a think tank report published on Thursday.

The pro-independence Scottish National Party, which heads the Scottish government, wants to hold a second referendum on breaking away from the United Kingdom by the end of next year.

Voters in Scotland, which has a population of around 5.5 million, rejected independence in 2014. But Scotland’s semi-autonomous government says Britain’s departure from the EU, which was opposed by a majority of Scots, means the question must be put to a second vote.

If Scotland voted for independence, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has stated a key objective would be to rejoin the EU.

The report by the UK In A Changing Europe think tank shows that while Brexit has reenergised the campaign for Scottish independence, it has made the consequences more complex. Any checks could create problems for Scottish businesses, which export three times more to the rest of the United Kingdom than to the EU.

Brexit has “profoundly changed the context in which independence is contested and could be realised”, the authors of the report said.

An independent Scotland in the EU would be responsible for ensuring that all goods and services entering the country met the bloc’s standards, according to the authors.

Border controls and inspection facilities would be needed along the main roads between Scotland and England with smaller roads potentially being monitored by cameras, the report said.

Recent opinion polls suggest Scotland is evenly split on the idea of independence, while pro-independence parties hold a majority in the Scottish parliament.

Sturgeon said last year that while Scotland would comply with all EU rules if her country joined the bloc, she would try to negotiate arrangements to keep free trade flowing with England.

The British government argued during the Brexit negotiations that the use of technology meant there was no need for checks on the border between the Republic of Ireland, an EU member, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom.

If there was another referendum and the Scots voted out, it would mark the biggest shock to the United Kingdom since Irish independence a century ago.

Scotland joined England in a political union in 1707, formally creating the Kingdom of Great Britain with a unified parliament in Westminster following centuries of antagonism and warfare.

SNARED Jamie ‘Iceman’ Stevenson arrested in Netherlands just weeks after being branded Scotland’s most-wanted fugitive

SCOTLAND'S most wanted man Jamie 'Iceman' Stevenson has been arrested in the Netherlands.

The fugitive, 56, was nicked while out jogging today after an international hunt by the National Crime Agency, Dutch National Police and Police Scotland.

It comes after authorities last week revealed Stevenson, of Burnside, near Glasgow, was believed to be hiding in Spain.

Sources also said the scar-faced suspect spent time in Turkey.

A 28-year-old man was nicked alongside Stevenson in the Netherlands bust.

Stevenson was named in an NCA appeal just two weeks ago when a new campaign was launched to trace 12 fugitives.

He was wanted by the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland over the seizure of approximately one tonne of cocaine and 28 million Etizolam ‘street Valium’ tablets.

The cocaine was found in a shipment at the Port of Dover in September 2020 and the tablets were seized following a raid on a suspected pill factory in Kent in June 2020.

Stevenson was also wanted in connection with two suspected arson attacks on properties in the Lanarkshire and Forth Valley areas in May 2020.

After a surveillance op, he was arrested around midday by a Dutch tactical unit in the southern municipality of Bergen op Zoom.

Both men remain in custody and will face extradition proceedings.
