More than 3 billion user credentials were just posted online as part of a data breach compilation that’s mind-boggling in its scale.

This collection of user data is being called the COMB, or the “Compilation of Many Breaches.”

This is not the result of a new breach — rather, it pulls together stolen user data from previous breaches of services like LinkedIn and Netflix.

Most of the data breaches you read about involve hacks of specific companies or organizations. A hotel’s credit card database was breached, for example, or an email service provider was hacked, exposing customer data and login credentials which can be used in turn to access more customer data. A newly posted cache of stolen customer details, however, takes this trend to an exponential and much more disturbing level.

This breach that’s just resulted in more than 3.2 billion email-and-password pairs being posted online has been dubbed COMB, the Compilation of Many Breaches. The name is apt because this mother of all data breaches is exactly that — an amalgamation of existing data that had been stolen as part of previous breaches and leaks from companies like Netflix and LinkedIn.

The facial recognition app Clearview AI is not welcome in Canada and the company that developed it should delete Canadians’ faces from its database, the country’s privacy commissioner said on Wednesday.

“What Clearview does is mass surveillance, and it is illegal,” Commissioner Daniel Therrien said at a news conference. He forcefully denounced the company as putting all of society “continually in a police lineup.” Though the Canadian government does not have legal authority to enforce photo removal, the position — the strongest one an individual country has taken against the company — was clear: “This is completely unacceptable.”

Clearview scraped more than three billion photos from social media networks and other public websites in order to build a facial recognition app that is now used by over 2,400 U.S. law enforcement agencies, according to the company. When an officer runs a search, the app provides links to sites on the web where the person’s face has appeared. The scope of the company’s reach and law enforcement application was first reported by The New York Times in January 2020. …

Dozens oflaw enforcement agenciesand organizations across Canada used the app, according to the commissioners, including the nationalRoyal Canadian Mounted Police.One Canadian law enforcement officer told The Times last year that it was“the biggest breakthrough in the last decade”forinvestigating child sexual abuse crimes.“Thousands of searches” were conducted, a report from the commissioners said, but only one agency was paying for the app, mainly because a number of groups used it through a free trial.

In December, 2020, Harris was indicted on seven counts in U.S. District Court in Illinois. New charges at that time alleged that he not only solicited photos from minor boys, but also solicited sex from minors while at cheerleading competitions.

A spokesperson for Harris stated that Harris and his associates “categorically dispute[d]” the claims. Harris is presently awaiting trial.

The sexually-related arrests have not stopped there.

Recently, two more men associated with the show have made headlines for their arrests for sexual offenses.

Mitchell Ryan, 23, was a Navarro College cheer team member on the show.

He was arrested in Texas on Wednesday, February 3, 2021, and charged with “felony aggravated sexual assault of a child.” This assault allegedly occurred on June 24, 2020.

Ryan’s attorney, Jeremy Rosenthal, told USA Today:

“This has been a nightmare for Mitch and his family.”

He added:

“We look forward to Dallas County hearing the truth and this case being over.”

Rosenthal did not comment further on the case.

His client was released from jail Friday, February 5, after posting bond.

Twitter (TWTR) CEO Jack Dorsey isn’t yet ready to tweet out details about the launch date of the platform’s long-rumored subscription product.

“We will continue to build out these teams and to research and also to test on Twitter, and I'm sure you all will see those tests and have the opportunity to participate or observe them. But I wouldn't expect you to see these be meaningful contributors until next year,” Dorsey told analysts about the subscription offering on an earnings call Tuesday evening.

Dorsey continued to play up Twitter’s advertising model, which has powered the company’s top and bottom lines since its inception.

“And so we love talking about subscriptions and the potential and the durability they can provide and predictability to our revenue streams, but we also maintain a big focus around our revenue products,” Dorsey added.

Twitter’s subscription ambitions came to light last summer amid slowing ad revenue during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A push into subscriptions along the lines of Netflix could provide a strong, new recurring revenue stream for Twitter. Ad spending is often viewed as volatile depending on economic conditions, as was the case in 2020. The falloff in ad spending at the height of COVID-19 hampered many companies in the media landscape, not just a social media player like Twitter.

Shares of Twitter rose 5% in early trading Wednesday as the company beat fourth quarter earnings estimates by 7 cents. Total revenue came in at $1.29 billion, eclipsing estimates for $1.19 billion. Monetizable daily active users (MDAU) clocked in at 192 million (up 27% year-over-year) versus forecasts for 193.5 million.

Twitter did warn its MDAUs would slow to 20% growth in the first quarter.

“We are incrementally positive on Twitter given 31% year-over-year ad rev growth was 2x higher than the Q3 rate and the fastest since Q1'16, operating margins are likely to expand in FY21 for the first time in three years, and new ad products + the return of brand spend could quadruple the FY21 revenue growth rate vs. FY20,” said Jefferies analyst Brent Thill.

Trudeau gov't wanted to downplay hydroxychloroquine purchase

An email from Prime Minister Trudeau's director of policy and cabinet affairs, Rick Theis, to Trudeau's lead speechwriter, Astrid Krizus, about the ordering of pandemic supplies shows that the writer was suggested to make no mention of the Government of Canada's purchase of hydroxychloroquine alongside other supplies, when preparing an official statement.

“Below… is the note PCO send [sic] to me on proposed language on PPE/supply,” Theis begins the email. He then relays two paragraphs of information that would seem to be guidance from the Privy Council Office with regard to how the federal government should word its announcement.

Interestingly, in the suggestions aimed at Krizus from the June 1, 2020 email, the speechwriter is told that it may not be best to focus on certain aspects of the government's pandemic purchases.

“Some elements, we may not want to announce (e.g., the purchase of Hydroxylchloriquine [sic]),” the email notes.

“Thanks Rick,” Krizus replies.

Shortly after that email was sent, the government's official position on the controversial usage of the drug was to not use it as a method of treatment for COVID-19.

The government's Clinical Pharmacology Task Group “recommends against the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for patients with COVID-19,” the statement reads, while citing the ”negligible evidence of efficacy and significant potential for harm leading to a high risk-to-benefit ratio.”

Hydroxychloroquine became a topic of controversy following former U.S. president Donald Trump's endorsement of the drug as a means for treating and staving off COVID-19. Having first touted the drug's viability in April 2020, Trump then went on the record in May stating that he had been taking hydroxychloroquine in an effort to defend against the virus.

In June 2020, a study critical of hydroxychloroquine that was published in medical journal The Lancet was withdrawn. Another study released in July showed the anti-malarial drug “helped COVID-19 patients survive better,” according to a CNN report shared by MSN.

The drug would, yet again, be a topic of controversy in July 2020 following an announcement by a group of doctors, one of whom praised the drug for its ability to help those suffering from COVID-19.

According to the World Health Organization, “current data shows that this drug does not reduce deaths among hospitalized COVID-19 patients, nor help people with moderate disease,” though it does make note that “more decisive research is needed to assess its value in patients with mild disease or as pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis in patients exposed to COVID-19.”
