Tuskegee Airman Theodore Lumpkin Jr. — one of the first Black pilots in the US military — has died from complications of COVID-19. He was 100 years old.

Lumpkin Jr. died Dec. 26, just a few days before his 101st birthday, his alma mater, Los Angeles City College, announced in a statement Friday. He is survived by his wife, Georgia, his two sons and a daughter.

The Los Angeles native was drafted in 1942 to the 100th Fighter Squadron in Tuskegee, Alabama. He spent his military career as an intelligence officer who briefed World War II pilots in Europe, the newspaper reported.

He was incredibly reserved about his time in the military, his wife said.

“We were married for a number of years until I heard about them,” she said. “When I realized who these guys were and what they’d done, I was just overcome at how much they persevered. They did not bow down. They achieved things that detractors said they couldn’t, weren’t capable of doing.”

Lumpkin Jr. graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in sociology following the war. He retired as a social worker with Los Angeles County before a second career in real estate.

Michael Apted, the acclaimed British director of the “Up” documentaries series and films as diverse as the Loretta Lynn biopic “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough,” has died. He was 79.

A representative for the Directors Guild of America said his family informed the organization that he passed Thursday night. No cause was given.

An incredibly prolific director, Apted’s legacy is perhaps most defined by the nine “Up” films, which followed the lives of 14 economically diverse British children from age 7 to 63. The project started in 1964 with “Seven Up!” the brainchild of the late Canadian filmmaker Paul Almond. Apted served as a researcher on the first and seven years later, took over as director and continued checking in with the subjects every seven years. The ambitious project earned him an Institutional Peabody Award in 2012 and also had the honor of being satirized by “The Simpsons” in a 2007 episode. The last film, “63 Up,” came out in 2019.

“The series was an attempt to do a long view of English society,” Apted told Slant Magazine in 2019. “The class system needed a kick up the backside.”

Apted was born in Aylesbury in 1941. Scholarships allowed him to study at Cambridge, where he counted John Cleese among his friends. He started in media with an apprenticeship at Granada Television, working on productions such as “Coronation Street.”

He made his feature debut in 1972 on “The Triple Echo” with Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson. In 1980, he came to the U.S. to direct “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” a commercial and critical success which earned Sissy Spacek a best actress Oscar. Apted ended up moving to California after that and worked steadily in film and television for the next 40 years.

Although Apted himself was never nominated for an Oscar, his films would garner two more acting nominations: Sigourney Weaver for her portrayal of Dian Fossey in “Gorillas in the Mist” and Jodie Foster for “Nell.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted Friday that, “He will be missed.” Apted was actively involved in his own industry, having served as an Academy governor and as president of the DGA from 2003 to 2009.

He directed a wide variety of projects and stars including John Belushi in “Continental Divide,” William Hurt in “Gorky Park,” Hugh Grant and Gene Hackman in “Extreme Measures” and Jennifer Lopez in “Enough.” In 1999, he directed the third Pierce Brosnan James Bond film, “The World Is Not Enough,” More recently, he worked on the Showtime series “Masters of Sex.” Michael Apted is especially remembered for the ongoing “Up” documentary series.

Taylor Hackford, who succeeded Apted at the DGA said in a statement that he was “the definition of ‘mensch’ – like the wonderful director he was, you could always count on him to deliver a clear and well thought out point-of-view, usually leavened with a dollop of dry wit.”

Steven Soderbergh, who also served alongside Apted at the DGA, added that he, “spent countless hours literally two feet from Michael and loved every minute of it. Apart from his own remarkable body of work, what he gave to the DGA can’t be measured; he put his entire BEING into the Guild and inspired us all to follow his example.”

Apted wasn’t looking to slow down either. He told Slant Magazine that he would be keen to do a “70 Up.”

"CM celebrated an illustrious career over 40 years and made an incredible impact on the global music and entertainment industry," the statement continued. "Best known for taking his ‘band of brothers’ INXS to worldwide stardom, CM Murphy influenced the lives of many around the globe with his endless passion and drive. He will be greatly missed."

Murphy was also known for working with Australian country group The Buckleys — consisting of siblings Sarah, Lachlan and Molly Buckley — who remembered the "strength" of Murphy.

"Chris has been our guardian angel from the day we met him and he will continue to be for the rest of our lives," they wrote in a joint tribute. "As with everyone who was so blessed to have known him – the strength, passion, guidance and love he ignites is forever lasting. We are so grateful to have walked this earth with him, our best friend, greatest champion and mentor. His spirit and light will forever live within and around us."

Aside from his music pursuits, Murphy is remembered for his "competitive spirit" and love of agriculture, surfing, rugby, racing pigeons and horse breeding.

He is survived by wife Caroline and children Stevey, Jeri, Jack, Louis and Charlie; and his grandchildren Asher, Samantha, Bella, Axel, Harley and Reuben; his mother Janice and sisters Charne and Tanya.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that trees are gifted to contribute to a memorial at Murphy's property in Ballina, New South Wales.

David Barclay, a British billionaire who with his twin brother, Frederick, built a media and business empire that includes the influential conservative newspaper The Daily Telegraph, died on Sunday. He was 86.

The Telegraph reported his death, saying it came unexpectedly after a short illness, but did not specify the cause or say where he died.

Despite owning several publications, the brothers tried to keep out of the media spotlight.

“Privacy is a valuable commodity,” David Barclay reportedly once said. But that privacy was shattered last year by a succession drama.

A family fight over the inheritance of the business empire and the sale of the Ritz burst into public view in a court case when Mr. Barclay’s sons were caught spying on their uncle Frederick and his daughter, fraying the relationship between the brothers.

The Barclay brothers, as they were known, received knighthoods in 2000 for their charitable services. They wore matching outfits to the ceremony — light gray waistcoats and bright purple ties in their formal morning dress — and knelt together before Queen Elizabeth II in what was called an unusual “double dubbing.” So reclusive were the twins that there have been no known published photos of them since that ceremony.

Whether for reasons of privacy or eccentricity — or whether simply to make the most of the luxuries afforded by their wealth — the brothers lived in a castle they had built on a small island in the English Channel, off the northeast coast of France, purchased in the early 1990s. A BBC reporter was sued for breach of privacy in 1996 for trying to reach them on the island.

Their first foray into media was in 1992, when they bought a new weekly newspaper called The European; it went out of business six years later. They bought The Scotsman, based in Edinburgh, in 1995, and owned it for 10 years; two years later they bought the financial newspaper Sunday Business, which closed 11 years later.

The brothers’ secretive lives have not been without controversy. The brothers have been accused of avoiding British taxes on some of their companies, including the Ritz, and one company has been in legal battles with the government, which seeks to claw back hundreds of millions of pounds in tax rebates.

In addition to those sons and his brother Frederick, his survivors include his second wife, Reyna Oropeza; another son from his first marriage, Duncan; a son from his second marriage, Alistair; and several grandchildren.

He was 54 years old.

Jones, a 13-year NFL veteran, played four seasons for the Broncos at tackle from 1997-2000. He served as the team's right tackle during their first world championship season in 1997 and held future Hall of Famer Reggie White without a sack in Super Bowl XXXII. Jones then manned the left tackle position in 1998 as Denver earned another title. Jones earned Pro Bowl honors that season as he protected John Elway's blind side.

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound player started all 60 games in which he appeared over his four seasons in Denver. Jones joined the Browns as an undrafted player in 1988 and spent eight seasons in Cleveland. Jones was a second-team All-Pro in 1994.

Bob Avian, a choreographer, director and producer who was deeply involved in some of the biggest Broadway shows of the last 60 years, including — with his frequent collaborator, Michael Bennett — “A Chorus Line,” one of the longest-running musicals in history, died on Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 83.

His husband, Peter Pileski, said through a spokesman that the cause was cardiac arrest.

Mr. Avian also choreographed the Broadway hits “Miss Saigon” (1991) and “Sunset Boulevard” (1994), among others, and directed a 2006 revival of “A Chorus Line” that ran on Broadway for almost two years, as well as productions of that show in London in 2013 and at New York City Center in 2018. He shared Tony Awards for choreography with Mr. Bennett for “A Chorus Line” (1975) and “Ballroom” (1978).

It all started with a happenstance of casting. Mr. Avian began his career as a dancer, and early on, about 1960, he was cast in an international tour of “West Side Story.”

Julienne accused the production company of taking short cuts in safety equipment, which Besson denied. The case wound up on September 11, 2007, with Julienne receiving an 18-month suspended jail sentence and a €13,000 fine. The prosecutor accused Julienne of "not taking all the necessary measures for the security of the stunt in question" and notably to have "neglected the speed calculations of the car and the length of the jump".[6]

Besson's firm EuropaCorp was initially cleared of all charges in 2007. Instead, Julienne, was held solely responsible for the botched scene.

One of France's leading stuntmen, Remy Julienne, who worked on several James Bond films, has died from Covid-19 aged 90, friends and family said Friday. Gregory Sierra, who was a key part of two major 1970s sitcoms as Julio Fuentes on Sanford and Son and Sgt. Miguel “Chano” Amenguale on Barney Miller, has died. He was 83.

Sierra died Jan. 4 in Laguna Woods, California, from cancer, according to a family spokesman. His death just became public today.

Born in New York’s Spanish Harlem, Sierra worked with the National Shakespeare Company and in the New York Shakespeare Festival. He also appeared in off-Broadway plays and was a standby on Broadway for The Ninety Day Mistress in 1967.

Moving to Los Angeles, Sierra had guest appearances on such shows as It Takes a Thief, Medical Center, The High Chaparral, Mod Squad, The Flying Nun and Kung Fu.

In films he was also a supporting actor in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Getting Straight (1970), Papillon (1973), The Towering Inferno (1974) and the Orson Welles project The Other Side of the Wind.

In 1972, he was cast as Julio, the sidekick to crotchety junkyard entrepreneur Fred Sanford, He was introduced in the second season episode, “The Puerto Ricans Are Coming.” The show, developed by All in the Family creators Bud Yorkin and Norman Lear, led to another memorable appearance in one of their vehicles, as Sierra played a radical Jewish vigilante in the episode “Archie is Branded” in 1973.

The versatile Sierra also was tapped later to portray Carlos “El Puerco” Valdez, a Malaguayan counter-revolutionist who kidnaps Jessica (Katherine Helmond) on ABC’s Soap.

After Sanford and Son, Sierra struck comedy gold again, appearing in 1975 as one of the original New York detectives in Barney Miller. Sierra played Chano on the show.

Sierra left Barney Miller at the end of the second season, moving over to another sitcom helmed by Barney Miller creator Danny Arnold. A.E.S. Hudson Street was set in a New York emergency room, but ended after just six episodes.

Sierra’s career continued as a recurring character on such shows as Hill Street Blues, Zorro and Son, Miami Vice and Murder, She Wrote, among many others.

Continuing his steady career, Sierra also appeared in the film The Trouble With Spies (1987), Honey, I Blew Up the Kid (1992), Hot Shots! Part Deux (1993), A Low Down Dirty Shame (1994), Vampires (1998) and Mafia! (1998).

He is survived by his wife, Helene. No memorial plans have been announced.
