You have to remmeber that when Google did come out, there weren't a lot of alternative search engines out there. I think the main big ones were generally attached to Yahoo or AOL. They were awful because they were choked to death with ads (picture a chaotic messy version of drudge report with a search box somewhere in the middle of it)

HTML pages often used frames back then which wouldn't interact well with every browser and you could get stuck in a section of the page that didn't load all of it if you didn't load the right section of it.

Google, when it came out and likely because it wasn't requiring ad revenue, was amazing because all it was was that neat little 'Google' graphic over a search box. All it was was the search engine without the other crap. It was a godsend for slow internet connections because you wouldn't have to load all the unnecessary stuff just to look something up. That was how they were introduced to the people on the internet and in general, the streamlined simplicity of Google was much preferred. Most people probably didn't care about the algorithm behind it, but faster load times can buy a lot of users.

Even to examination, they look innocent enough, but even before you consider what the data is being used for when it gets to the other end, the widget you thought you had examined could be using JS tricks to inject code into the page while it detects no activity etc, then reverts the source html when the page is scrolled again or you type or whatever.
