We have small drones flying over our back yard sometimes.

I was telling a friend of mine about it and he said, why don't you just shoot it down. We laughed about it. But I wonder what would happen if I did. With my luck it would be a police drone looking for terrorists.

In US, many people who thought it was a good idea to shoot a drone have found themselves financially responsible to drone owner. Most drones have powerful cameras.

FAA is authorized to make regulations and their opinion as to whether taking down a UAS carries a lot of weight with the courts, since courts don't routinely handle air traffic controller duties (which, if you think about it, is pretty darn vital to get right). Fed courts pay attention to stuff like that.
