Sharyl Attkisson: How Propagandists Co-Opted ‘Fact-Checkers’ and the Press to Control the Information Landscape

“Virtually every piece of information that can be co-opted has been, whether it’s Wikipedia online, fact-checkers, the news,” says five-time Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist Sharyl Attkisson. “This is all part of a very well-funded, well-organized landscape that dictates and slants the information they want us to have.”

Attkisson is the host of Full Measure and author of “Slanted: How the News Media Taught Us to Love Censorship and Hate Journalism.”

Mr. Jekielek: Sharyl Attkisson, such a pleasure to have you back on American Thought Leaders.

Ms. Attkisson: Thanks for having me.

Mr. Jekielek: Sharyl, I’ve been lately thinking about your book Slanted. You wrote this pre-COVID frankly. And the more I think… The subtitle, this is close. How the Media Taught Us to Love Censorship and Hate Journalism. I think you were seeing something very profound earlier than many were.

Ms. Attkisson: I think part of the reason it’s not that I’m so prescient, it’s that the kind of reporting I do lends itself to me seeing, or being subjected to trends in media and propaganda that later become more widespread. But I think I’m kind of on the leading edge of seeing it sometimes. And I can look at it, kind of see what’s happening in the landscape.

When I say how the media taught us to love censorship and hate journalism, it’s referring to the phenomenon that prior to 2015, 2016, and I looked at this to make sure I was on target with my memory, there was no big movement, begging big tech or third parties or fact-checkers to get between us and our open information online or on the news. Nobody would’ve thought of it at least on any broad scale.

And yet now here we are just a couple of years later, after a major campaign to control the information I believe, on the news and online, where many people embrace the notion that some know nothing third party that’s quite frankly, their strings are being pulled by some corporate or political interest that they’re inserting themselves and saying what we can and can’t see and read and what we should believe, yet people are embracing that even in the media, and begging for more of it. Never would’ve thought of that just a couple of years ago, that would be the case.

Unusual January Wildfire Strikes in California’s Big Sur

A 1,500-acre fire is burning in the Palo Colorado Canyon and Rocky Creek Road area of Big Sur in California, closing a section of Highway 1 along the Pacific Coast.

The fire remained “stubbornly active overnight,” the Bay Area’s National Weather Service said in a tweet on Saturday. Orders to evacuate a neighborhood in Monterey County began on Friday when the fire burned about 100 acres, KCRA reported. Dry winds were pushing flames toward Highway 1, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS said long-term drought is acting like a “chronic illness” and even cold weather and recent rains aren’t deterring fires from igniting. The NWS said the amount of possible fuel on the ground for a fire “is near normal, which normally means things don’t actively burn in January.”

The weather forecast shows no rain for the next seven days or so in the region.

Lab monkeys escape after US road crash, one on the loose

The crash in Pennsylvania of a truck transporting 100 monkeys to a laboratory allowed four of them to escape, triggering a search by police who warned the public not to approach the animals.

The vehicle collided with a dump truck near Danville, Pennsylvania on Friday afternoon, en route to a laboratory in Florida.

Police said on Twitter that four moneys had “fled the crash scene into the surrounding area.”

Three were later captured, but one was still on the loose on Saturday morning.

The local WNEP news site said a police helicopter with thermal cameras was used to track down the cynomolgus monkeys, while officers on the ground used powerful flashlights.

Pennsylvania State Police released an image of one primate perched in a tree off Route 54 during the freezing cold night.

A reporter said police surrounded the monkey before shots were fired from an unidentified weapon.

“Crash Update: There is still one monkey unaccounted for, but we are asking that no one attempt to look for or capture the animal,” police troopers said on Twitter on Saturday morning.

Cynomolgus monkeys — also known as long-tailed macaques — can cost up to $10,000 each and have been in demand for coronavirus vaccine research, according to the New York Times. They can live for 30 years in captivity.

Turkey Said to See Inflation Rate Peaking at About 40% in 2022

Turkish Finance Minister Nureddin Nebati told economists he expects the inflation rate to peak at about 40% in the months ahead and not to surpass 50% this year, according to people who attended.

Nebati provided his most detailed outlook yet for consumer prices in 2022 during a meeting with 60 economists and analysts on Saturday in Istanbul, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the event wasn’t public. The minister said the inflation rate may not fall below 30% until the end of the year, one of the people said. The Turkish Finance Ministry declined to comment.

Turkey’s inflation rate hit 36.1% in December, the highest since the beginning of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s 19-year rule. Inflation expectations for the next 12 months jumped to 25.37% from 21.39%, according to the central bank’s January survey of market participants. Some Wall Street banks predict last year’s currency crisis could push inflation beyond 50%.

The jump in prices was fueled by Turkey’s central bank cutting its benchmark rate by 500 basis points in four consecutive meetings, before announcing a pause to its easing cycle on Thursday. The aggressive easing was demanded by Erdogan, who argued that lower rates would contain consumer prices and boost growth. The lira’s depreciation and rising global energy prices were the biggest drivers of inflation.

Andrew W. Mellon

Andrew W. Mellon served as secretary of the Treasury from March 4, 1921, to February 12, 1932. Under the provisions of the original Federal Reserve Act, this meant he was also ex-officio chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

Mellon was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1855. He graduated from the Western University of Pennsylvania in 1873. In 1874, he joined his father’s banking firm, T. Mellon & Sons, and in 1882 his father transferred bank ownership to Mellon.

Mellon began expanding his firm into industrial fields such as aluminum, steel, oil, coal, and coke by providing capital for corporations. Mellon’s financial backing led to the creation of the Aluminum Company of America and the Gulf Oil Company. He also helped found the Union Steel company, which eventually merged with United States Steel Corporation. In 1889, Mellon helped organize the Union Trust Company and Union Savings Bank of Pittsburgh. By the 1920s, Mellon was one of the wealthiest men in the United States.

In 1921, President Warren G. Harding appointed Mellon to lead the Treasury. He was tasked with reducing the large federal debt that resulted from World War I. Mellon sought to increase revenue by lowering tax rates in the hopes of both stimulating economic activity as well as increasing overall tax revenue by encouraging more people to actually pay their taxes. His plan cut taxes across the board and was enacted by Congress in the Revenue Acts of 1921, 1924, and 1926. The top marginal tax rate fell from 73 percent in 1922 to 24 percent in 1929. Mellon’s policies proved effective in lowering the national debt, but the onset of the Great Depression caused the debt to rise again, and the top tax rate increased to 80 percent.

As an ex-officio member to the Federal Reserve Board, Mellon favored interest rate hikes to help curtail speculation in 1929 and was against stimulus packages. As the economy failed, Mellon’s critics called for his ousting. In 1932, he resigned from the Treasury amidst accusations of improper business ties and impeachment proceedings. He was appointed ambassador to England, a post he held from 1932 to 1933.

Mellon was an avid collector of art and in 1937 he donated $10 million to construct the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC He also founded the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research with his brother in 1913, which later became Carnegie Mellon University.

Mellon died in 1937.
