My take on it was:

They may have a backdoor to test coding and upload to older tweets.

Could be a test but I was sort of confused. May have misinterpreted what people were explaining!

If there's something else here then sure thing, but seeing just this is retarded.

Did a test myself few hours ago, made a new post, put on a thumbnail, posted the link on Twitter, made sure that Twitter Card Validator shows correct thumbnail for the link I've posted, changed the thumbnail again, Twitter Card Validator showing the new thumbnail that I've changed, it also updated on the post I've made on Twitter.
