ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

The months-long surge of illegal immigrants on America's southern border has gone beyond crisis mode, and Catholic Charities has been at the center of it.

Church Militant's Kristine Christlieb briefs us on how the Catholic nonprofit may be profiting illegally from the migration catastrophe.

As Church Militant and the Lepanto Institute have been reporting for years, illegal immigration is a cash cow for nonprofit giant Catholic Charities.

Four Republican members of Congress plus the state of Texas are hot on the charity's trail, both claiming some of its immigration activities may be illegal.

Wednesday, in a letter addressed to the organization's Virginia headquarters, Congressmen Lance Gooden and Jake Ellzey of Texas, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin ordered the charity to "preserve all information related to any expenditures submitted for reimbursement from the federal government related to migrants encountered at the southern border."

The Congressmen promise an investigation, saying, "Catholic Charities is violating federal law and regulations, placing migrants and American communities at risk, and subjecting local communities to unreasonable burdens."

Also on Wednesday, speaking on behalf of the people of Texas, Catholic Gov. Greg Abbott officially unleashed his crack attorney general, Ken Paxton, on the border problem, telling him "to initiate an investigation into the role of NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] in planning and facilitating the illegal transportation of illegal immigrants across our borders."

Earlier this month, the Heritage Foundation released findings from its investigation of the border crisis.

Specifically naming Catholic Charities, the report "confirmed that a host of NGOs are actively facilitating the Biden border crisis."

Finally feeling the heat, Catholic Charities, which failed to respond to a February inquiry from the Congressmen, is denying any wrongdoing, calling the accusations "factually inaccurate."

Once motivated by the love of Christ to help others, Catholic Charities has lost its way and has become an enemy of the people — even the people it claims to be trying to save.

Next to the federal government, Catholic Charities is the nation's largest social safety-net provider.

A priest in the Catholic church has become embroiled in a scandal amid reports he allegedly invited two other members of the church to a threesome. Marko Ivan Rupnik, known to be close to Pope Francis, is believed to have invited two nuns to engage in the act. The allegations come after one of the nuns whom he invited to take part reported it. It comes amid fears the allegations will heap significant embarrassment on the Pope who is close to the priest. The latest allegations add to other accusations of sexual misconduct dating back decades.

The recent allegation emerged on Sunday in one of Rome’s newspapers after an unnamed nun came forward and claimed Rupnik had groomed her.

She also claimed that Rupnik has also taken her virginity and bullied her into silence in Slovenia in the 1980s and 1990s.

The nun told the Domani newspaper: “Father Marko started slowly and sweetly getting inside my psychological and spiritual world, exploiting my uncertainties and fragility.”

She added that he allegedly asked her and another nun to have sex with him and that he explained this would replicate the three-way relationship the Holy Spirit, God, and Jesus.

Furthermore, she claimed that Rupnik had abused “nearly 20” nuns and that her complaints were ignored.

In response, the Jesuit order asked any victims to come forward and promised: “You will be listed to with understanding and with empathy.”

It comes after Rupnik was accused of sexual misconduct in Slovenia in the 1990s, but which only came to light earlier this month.

When asked for comment, the priest’s order said the Vatican had investigated Rupnik, but had ruled that the statute of limitations applied.

A statue of limitations is a law passed by a legislative body which sets a maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be started.

In the case of Rupnik, his actions fell outside of this window and he was not punished.

Vatican investigator says claims of Jesuit abuse true

ROME (AP) — A Vatican-appointed investigator who helped bring to light decades-old allegations of sexual and spiritual abuse against a famous Jesuit priest is calling for the hierarchs who hid his crimes to “humbly ask the world to forgive the scandal.”

In correspondence obtained Monday, Bishop Daniele Libanori also said the claims of the women about the Rev. Marko Ivan Rupnik were true and that they had “seen their lives ruined by the evil suffered and by the complicit silence” of the church.

Libanori penned the letter Sunday to fellow priests after a remarkable week in which the Jesuit religious order of Pope Francis admitted that Rupnik, an artist whose mosaics grace churches and chapels around the world, had been excommunicated for having committed one of the most serious crimes in the church: using the confessional to absolve a woman with whom he had engaged in sexual activity.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which handles sex abuse cases, declared the excommunication in May 2020 but lifted it that same month and then declined to prosecute him a year later when nine women came forward with other, related allegations. The Congregation, which is headed by Jesuits, said the cases were to old to prosecute.

Catholic Charities give $400 million in aid, double PPP loans received

Catholic Charities affiliates across the country have distributed more than double the amount of money they received from Payroll Protection Program loans in emergency assistance, to help those impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. 

"The generosity of corporate donors, foundations, and individuals has been overwhelming," said Sr. Donna Markham, the president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, in a release Monday. 

Over the last four months, Catholic Charities distributed nearly $400 million in relief aid in the form of food, rental assistance, personal protective equipment, baby supplies, and quarantine housing. Catholic Charities affiliates are located in most dioceses throughout the country, and, including areas of the country hardest-hit during the pandemic, many have opened pop-up food pantries to assist those in need. 

A July reported from the Associated Press criticized the fact that Catholic parishes, dioceses, and other organizations had received approximately $1.4 billion in Payroll Protection Program loans. The Payroll Protection Program was designed to help employers pay the salaries of employees amidst the economic downturn and the forced closing of businesses. 

Catholic Charities affiliates received an estimated $100-$200 million in PPP loans, enabling the organizations to keep staff on payroll and continue distributing aid.

Our Story

In 1917 the U.S. bishops formed the National Catholic War Council (NCWC) to enable U.S. Catholics to contribute funds and commit personnel to provide spiritual care and recreation services to servicemen during World War I. In 1919 Pope Benedict XV urged the hierarchy to join him in working for peace and social justice. In response, the bishops organized the National Catholic Welfare Council in and set up the first Administrative Committee of seven members to handle the Council's business between plenary meetings. The headquarters were established in Washington, DC and a general secretary with some staff was appointed.

In 1922, the word "Conference" replaced "Council" in the organization's title, underlining the fact that it was consultative rather than legislative. At the same time, the National Catholic Welfare Conference was created to address such concerns as education, immigration and social action.

This model continued until 1966 when the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (NCCB) and the United States Catholic Conference (USCC) were established. The NCCB attended to the Church's own affairs in this country. Its committees were exclusively bishops and their secretariats. In USCC, the bishops collaborated with other Catholics to address issues that concern the Church as part of the larger society. Its committees also included lay people, clergy and religious.

On July 1, 2001 the NCCB and the USCC combined to form the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). USCCB continues the work done by both, maintaining the same staff. The bishops themselves form approximately 17 committees, each with its own responsibility.

At the recent U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops fall meeting in Baltimore (Nov. 14-17), pro-Francis bishops lost for the most part to anti-Francis bishops in elections to the conference's top offices, sending a loud message to Rome and the rest of the English-speaking world.

The church's right wing is celebrating the new USCCB president, Archbishop Timothy Broglio, a career Vatican diplomat who has headed the Archdiocese for the Military Services since 2007. From 1990 to 2001, Broglio was an influential aide to Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano. It was during Broglio's time in Rome that the cardinal blocked investigations of notorious sexual abuser Fr. Marcial Maciel Delgado.

Broglio blames homosexuality for the abuse crisis and has supported religious objections to COVID-19 vaccines. While transparency is a hallmark of the Synod on Synodality, the Archdiocese for the Military Services is among the minority of U.S. dioceses that does not post a synod synthesis.

Though, in a nod to synodality, as the bishops sat at round tables in the Baltimore Marriott ballroom, all the elected officers are on the right side of the aisle. One after another, more moderate candidates fell to the culture warriors.

During the meeting, the bishops heard a presentation about the multimillion dollar plans for the National Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for Indianapolis in July 2024. They spoke about liturgy and approved causes for canonization. They decided not to rewrite their outdated voters guide.

What is most telling is that the time the bishops spent on these issues far exceeded the time spent on what the church is called to do: minister to the poor, to the hungry, to the thirsty, to the homeless, the sick, the imprisoned and the dead.

Yes, the bishops discussed publishing a book to aid lay persons who minister to the sick. Yes, an abuse survivor and Newark's Cardinal Joseph Tobin (who lost election as conference secretary) presented strong statements toward the end of one day's sessions. Yes, there was discussion about the synod, whose next phase will be conducted via Zoom among representatives chosen only by the bishops. The chair of the migration committee reported that, working with other agencies, the bishops' Migration and Refugee Services helped to resettle some 1,300 Afghans.

Yet the clearest statement about dedication to Christian charity came from Dominican Sister Donna Markham, retiring president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, the giant umbrella over 167 agencies and some 3,400 locations serving more than 15 million persons annually. Markham detailed the ways her agency directed what she termed "the Catholic Church's response in this country to people who reside along the margins of our society ... this is where our church puts the Gospel into action."

Markham said the largest percentage of Catholic Charities' budget comes from outside sources: Only 1% comes from the annual USCCB collection, another 5% from member agency dues.

The fact that a woman gave the strongest example of what the church is and needs to do is instructive of the quagmire the bishops find themselves in.

Twenty years ago, the body approved the "Dallas Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People." At the time, at least one bishop, Fabian Bruskowitz of Lincoln, Nebraska, refused to implement the strictures. The USCCB did not hold him accountable. Since then, state after state has produced staggering statistics documenting a pattern of sex abuse by its clerics.

To be sure, safeguarding is important, but it is only one part of the equation. Until seminaries put human formation at the top of the list, they will continue to produce clericsnot all of them, but many of themwho preach politics rather than the Gospel and who are lawgivers rather than agents of mercy.

That is why Catholics and others are left wondering what the USCCB is all about. That is why so many Catholics have simply left.

The CIA is the best known of the 17 agencies that comprise the American intelligence community. It has earned itself nicknames like “Catholic Intelligence Agency” and “Catholics In Action”. It’s worth exploring why.

No official statistics exist on Catholics in the CIA or any other American intelligence agency. But one interesting clue is the relatively high number of Catholics who have served as director of the agency.

The United States is a country in which – with the recent exception of the Supreme Court – Catholics have never dominated the highest offices. Only one out of 44 US Presidents has been Catholic. The first and only Catholic Vice President is the current one, Joe Biden. Before John Kerry, the last Catholic Secretary of State was Alexander Haig, who left the post in 1982. But these guys were, they were like Mother Teresa. St. Francis. They were the poorer ones. And from the poorer countries. And they were just all about service. And we took a &ndash; had so many incredible life-changing experiences there, that just opened my eyes to so much. And one night, it was before the cardinals were, I don't know.

Pell’s knowledge of child abuse by paedophile priest Gerald Ridsdale

Gerald Ridsdale is one of the country’s most notorious paedophile priests.

He committed more than130 offences against children as young as fourbetween the 1960s and 1980s, including while working as a school chaplain at St Alipius boys’ school in Ballarat, and continues to be convicted and sentenced for his crimes, most recently in October.

Pell lived with Ridsdale for a time in the 1970s, accompanied him to court in 1993, and offered to provide character evidence for him.

The commission found that, by 1973, Pell was not only “conscious of child sexual abuse by clergy” but that he had“considered measures of avoiding situations which might provoke gossip about it”.

Pell had been handed a list of incidents and grievances about Searson in 1989, which included reports Searson had abused animals in front of children and was using children’s toilets.

Pell said this was not enough information for him to act.

The Democratic Party is totally anti-Christian and obstinately determined to implement the globalist agenda of the New World Order.

On the other hand, the Republican Party is recklessly pursuing a minority of voters who are indulging in lifestyles that are contrary to the Commandments and to the common good.

American Catholics find themselves today in the impossible situation of being represented by a political class that is revealing itself to be completely incapable of representing and expressing Catholic convictions in moral and religious matters.

This causes voters to become disaffected, which is added to electoral fraud and scandals that are emerging about media censorship and the manipulation of electoral consensus.

Up until now, certain aspects of the political platform of the Republican Party were able to be overlooked to some extent due to the much more serious threat embodied by the Democratic Party.

But it is now evident that the action of the deep state has contaminated the entire political elite without distinction, even involving Donald Trump, who up until now seemed to be a source of hope for the future of the United States.

A nation that offends the Law of God cannot hope to be blessed by the Lord, and those who support sinful lifestyles ought to think of the Judgment that awaits them rather than pleasing those who are corrupt in a calculated effort to win votes.

Donald Trump is usually a repository of common sense. But on matters related to “gay rights,” he is hopelessly unmoored from common sense. Trump’s support for that appalling movement, which is so destructive to the country, at a recent Log Cabin Republicans’ gala held at his Mar-a-Lago estate iscompletely indefensible.

The gross propaganda to which Trump offered inane homage strikes at the roots of a country’s strength, namely, the first form of government — the two-parent family that God placed at the center of his plan for humanity. God, not man, is the measure of morality, and he expressed clearly in the design of the human body and the difference between men and women that “gay rights” are a lying fiction that corrupts children and weakens a nation. Has Trump not been paying attention for the last five decades? The “gay rights” movement has been a disaster for the traditional family and children, exposing many of them to the implicit child abuse of “gay adoption” and increasingly hubristic “IVF” experiments. The “gay rights” movement has not made America great again. Rather, it has made America weak and depraved and has led to the abomination of transgenderism. Trump needs to think more and talk less and crack open the philosophical works of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, who recognized the depravity of homosexuality and its baneful influence on the common good. A “conservatism” that fails to see the centrality of the traditional family to the common good and fosters respect for a lifestyle that is utterly destructive of the family and the moral health of children isworthless.

Pull your head out of your ass, Mr. Trump,and defend the natural moral law, which is essential to the strength and longevity of a country. But his opposition to the LGBTQ movement is restricted to the “T” in that tiresome acronym, and even on the issue of transgenderism his disdain only applies to its imposition on children, not adults. Yet even DeSantis, who is a mediocre retail politician at best, has the sense to keep his distance from frivolous Republicans who want to turn the GOP into the Gay Old Party. Trump has heedlessly seconded this movement, and, if it succeeds in dominating the party, America will be subject to two equally immoral parties spewing nonsense about sexuality and, thereby, creating a culture that renders any national greatness impossible.

No doubt the philosophically shallow Trumpwould scoff at this view and counsel me that I am too uptight. But that is simply not true: Opposition to the LGBTQ movement is not idle and pompous morality but an essential defense of Judeo-Christian civilization and the preservation of religious liberty. An LGBTQ America is a godless America in which Christians are treated as the worst, not the best, citizens in the country. “Being homosexual is not a crime,” he said in an interview with the Associated Press, which was published on Wednesday. “It’s not a crime. Yes, but it’s a sin. Fine, but first let’s distinguish between a sin and a crime. It’s also a sin to lack charity with one another.” “And being homosexual is not a crime,” he said again. “It’s a human condition.”

The comments, which were part of a lengthy and wide-ranging interview, did not establish any new doctrine or push any new theological territory. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that gay people “must be accepted with respect, compassion, and sensitivity,” and that “every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided.” Nor is it counter to Francis’ previous stances on the matter: He has repeatedly urged the church to treat gay people with compassion. He famously said of gay priests, “Who am I to judge?” But in making comments about laws, Francis is speaking to some of his own bishops. When four Republican congressmen accused Catholic Charities USA of violating federal law by providing food, clothing and shelter to migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border, the organization quickly fired back, calling the allegations “incredibly disturbing,” “fallacious and factually inaccurate.” Instead of endangering people, as the lawmakers suggested in a Dec. 14 letter that accuses Catholic Charities USA of “aiding and abetting illegal immigrants,” the humanitarian work “is mandated by the gospel” and saves lives by caring for “vulnerable people on the move,” a statement issued by the organization declared. Anthony Granado, the vice president for government relations for Catholic Charities USA, said he found the lawmakers’ claim insulting, saying it “threatens the core ministry of the church.” The urgency of the organization’s response was necessary because, Granado said, the work of Catholic Charities “has traditionally been met with a great level of respect by Republicans and Democrats alike.”

“We have not seen such a level of direct … attack against Catholic Charities USA,” Granado told Religion News Service. “We will continue to do this work. We will not apologize for it. The gospel compels us to do so. If that’s unpopular with certain members of Congress, so be it.” Organizations advocating for migrants on the U.S.-Mexico border, many of which are faith-based groups and churches providing shelter, say they will not be intimidated by lawmakers who are requesting investigations of nongovernmental organizations accused of “facilitating the movement of illegal immigrants across our border.”

The same day Catholic Charities received the letter — which was signed by U.S. Reps. Lance Gooden (Tex.) Tom Tiffany (Wis.), Jake Ellzey (Tex.) and Andy Biggs (Ariz.) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) asked the state attorney general to investigate NGOs that he says have assisted illegal border crossings near El Paso.

With pandemic-era immigration restrictions expected to expire soon, border towns have been preparing for an onslaught of migrant arrivals. Use of the public health rule known as Title 42 was supposed to end Wednesday, but U.S. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. ordered a temporary hold.

Some advocates, such as the Catholic activist Dylan Corbett, the executive director of Hope Border Institute, said these tactics not only raise questions about abuse of office, but also about threats to religious liberty.

“We do this as an expression of our faith,” Corbett said. “We do this as an expression of our commitment to building a more just world, because we are people of faith.”

Pedro De Velasco, the director of education and advocacy for Kino Border Initiative, a Catholic group that advocates and provides humanitarian assistance for migrants in Nogales, Ariz., as well as in Nogales across the border in Mexico, said his organization has not received any such inquiry into its humanitarian assistance.

To De Velasco, these queries are meant to “raise doubts in the work that NGOs are doing for the migrants” — work that the government should be doing, he added.

“There’s a need, because the U.S. government is not upholding the international and domestic laws of people accessing asylum. People are stranded. They’re stuck in Nogales and all across the border,” he said.

PARIS (ChurchMilitant.com) - Catholic celebrity Jean Vanier, the founder of the L'Arche community, sexually exploited at least 25 women, an explosive report has revealed. 

Vanier, an influential advocate for celibacy, colluded with his mentor, Fr. Thomas Philippe, to manipulate women with religious vocations, including nuns, into sexual relationships using "incestuous representations of relationships between Jesus and Mary," the report stated.

The compilers of the report conclude that L'Arche was "founded to serve as a screen for the activities of the group of 'initiates'" who indulged in a perverse form of coercive psycho-spiritual sexual behavior. Published on Monday, the 868-page report described how all the abused women "shared an active spiritual quest at the time of their abusive or transgressive relationship, which was manifested in particular by the discernment of a religious vocation."

Some of Vanier and Fr. Philippe's victims had taken religious vows; others were seriously considering a religious vocation, and others were young converts to Catholicism (some after having experienced a spiritual quest in different horizons like Zen Buddhism). 

"Vanier played a determining role in a personal path of conversion and in vocational choices made," the report emphasized. "The question of commitment to celibacy in and for L'Arche is a focal issue in discussions with J. Vanier."

Vanier's books regularly advocate celibacy and plead "for a rehabilitation of celibacy but by keeping the possibility of a privileged love between two people attracted to one another," the report noted, citing as an example Vanier's book Homme et femme il les fit (Man and woman he made them). 

Compiled over the span of two years by six French scholars, the report explained how Vanier and Fr. Philippe interpreted celibacy as "not of the order of marital, exclusive love" but "as 'supernatural' by essence," therefore implying "a multiplicity of partners."

The report described Dominican priest Thomas Philippe as "beyond morality and reason" and that he therefore "felt no guilt towards the people he abused." He justified his actions as conforming to "a higher order of sexuality and celibacy."

In a letter to Dominical provincial Mgr. Stephane Desmazieres, Fr. Philippe explains that "[i]t is no longer a question of purely human celibacy, which always implies a kind of deprivation, hence requiring some sort of compensation." 

"Rather it is a question of positive virginity where God himself, from within, assumes everything in us," writes Philippe. "He gives man new balance and stability from a more plenary and intimate union with the Holy Spirit, and through him with Jesus and Mary."

Rwandan church continues efforts at reconciliation, regaining trust

As she sold dried fish from her stand at the Kimironko market in Kigali, Rwanda, Therese Mukabunane narrated how hundreds of desperate residents in her hometown of Gikongoro died at the hands of priests and nuns during the 1994 genocide in which more than 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered by Hutu extremists.

“The priests, who were ethnic Hutus, referred to us as cockroaches and denied us food and water,”said the 52-year-old mother of four, who is a Tutsi.

“They handed people who had taken refuge at their parishes to Hutu extremists so that they could be slaughtered. Some of us were lucky not to be murdered, but we were raped and seriously injured.”

“I no longer trust priests and other leaders of the church,” said Mukabunane, who was born and raised Catholic. “They abandoned us when we needed them the most. Their words were full of hatred. They had no respect for human life.”

Besides killing hundreds of thousands, the Rwandan genocide strained the relationship between the Rwandan government and the Vatican. In 2016, the country’s bishops apologized for priests’ role in the genocide, and Pope Francis asked forgiveness in 2017.

But 27 years later, the Catholic Church in the East African nation has intensified its campaign to preach peace and help victims of genocide and reconcile Hutus and Tutsis. Cardinal Antoine Kambanda of Kigali, whose family was killed during the genocide while he was in Rome studying, said the church has initiated dialogues where communities are allowed to express their grievances, forgive each other and reconcile as a way of healing as well as building relationships. “A lot happened during this genocidal period, and it requires the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ marked by forgiveness and mercy to rebuild our country,” the cardinal said in late July. “The church must continue to preach peace and reconciliation to enhance peaceful coexistence among communities.”

In Nyamata parish, about 20 miles south of Kigali, where some 50,000 people died during the genocide, Father Emmanuel Nsengiyumva offers counseling programs and a nine-month program on reconciliation. Perpetrators are allowed to acknowledge their evilness and ask survivors and victims for forgiveness, he said, adding that the survivors are encouraged to forgive and welcome perpetrators into their communities. “We want to free people so that they can live in peace and love each other,” said Father Nsengiyumva, who was just 18 years old when the massacre began. He said he lost two of his brothers. “We are seeking to make all perpetrators and survivors of the genocide who had lost hope and their dreams shattered regain it.”

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (ChurchMilitant.com) - Catholic legislators have been instrumental in the nation's most radical abortion bill becoming state law. 

The so-called Protect Reproductive Options Act, or PRO Act, allows for the killing of unborn babies up until birth — by any method, with no maternal age restrictions and for any reason. Minnesota's Senate passed the lethal legislation on Saturday, following 15 hours of debate. As promised, Gov. Tim Walz, a two-term Democrat, signed the bill into law on Tuesday afternoon. 

"We are enacting the most extreme bill in the country regarding youth sterilization, late term abortions and public viability for a vast array of new reproductive rights," lamented Sen. Mark Johnson, R-Minn., minority leader for State District 1.

The bill, introduced as HF1, enshrines in state law the murder of unborn children. It defines the so-called rights as "health care offered, arranged, or furnished for the purpose of preventing pregnancy, terminating a pregnancy, managing pregnancy loss, or improving maternal health and birth outcomes." It continues, "Reproductive health care includes, but is not limited to, contraception; sterilization; preconception care; maternity care; abortion care; family planning and fertility services; and counseling regarding reproductive health care."

Following the Senate's vote, Sen. Jim Abeler, R-Minn., for State District 35, chided, "It's abortion on demand for all. Let's not mince words. That's what it is." 

Thirteen counterfeit Catholics — all Democrats — helped advance the radical bill. The 10 Catholics in the House who voted in favor of it are as follows:

Speaker Melissa Hortman  Rep. Peter Fischer Rep. John Huot Rep. Ginny Klevorn Rep. Erin Koegel Rep. Kelly Moller Rep. Matt Norris Rep. Dave Pinto Rep. Lucy Rehm Rep. Brad Tabke

Only one Catholic Democrat, freshman Rep. Gene Pelowski Jr., voted against the measure.

The three Catholics in the Senate who supported the bill are:

Church Militant contacted the archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis to ask how — if at all — it intends to discipline the self-identified Catholics who voted for the bill. The archdiocese did not respond by press time.

Just days before the Senate's weekend vote, Abp. Bernard Hebda released a brief video urging the faithful to write and call their state leaders to oppose the PRO Act. In the video, he also explained the piece of legislation's abhorrent nature:

Essentially, it's a bill that works to enshrine into law an abortion regime that disregards prenatal life. The PRO Act is part of the most extreme abortion legislative agenda in Minnesota history, allowing for abortion for any reason and at any time without any regulation. How disturbing that a preborn child whose heart is beating, who can feel pain and who may even be viable outside the womb is treated with such disdain.

In what appeared to be a last-ditch effort, Minnesota's Catholic bishops sent a statement to lawmakers one day prior to the House vote, advising legislators not to pass the measure:

"In a post-Dobbs world in which states that allow abortion have the responsibility to both regulate the practice and protect nascent human life, we should be working to find common ground on the challenges before us in Minnesota. We stand firm that every child should be welcomed in life and protected by law. "

Critics of the bill noted a 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court decision — Doe v. Gomez — already protects abortion in the state. However, Democratic legislators claim the PRO Act is needed to thwart future legal efforts to override those purported protections. The bill enshrines in state law the murder of unborn children.

Republicans introduced 65 amendments to reduce the measure's severity, including parental notification and a ban on third-trimester abortions, but the Democrats voted all of them down.

After the Senate passed the bill, Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life released a message lambasting the bill: 

"Under this bill, even babies who are old enough to live outside the womb and to feel excruciating pain have no protection from lethal violence. The extremism of H.F. 1 puts Minnesota in the same category as just a handful of countries around the world, including North Korea and China."

Minnesota now joins Colorado, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon and Vermont in providing unlimited abortion access.

In August 2022, Nicaraguan Bishop Rolando Alvarez was arrested by police acting on orders from President Daniel Ortega.

Ortega ordered the detainment of Rolando Alvarez, 56, and placed him on home arrest due to the bishop’s open criticism of the controversial president’s authoritarian regime in Nicaragua.

Pope Francis, who expressed sadness at the news of Bishop Rolando Alvarez’s sentence, appealed to government officials in Nicaragua to find a peaceful resolution following Ortega’s crackdown against the Catholic Church that led to the arrest of several priests in the country.

Ortega holds the Catholic Church responsible for the protests against his authoritarian regime in 2018 that killed 300 people in Nicaragua.

He believes that the Catholic Church, an institution free from government intervention, fanned the flames of dissension against his rule and has since expelled Catholic nuns and missionaries from the country.

On Friday, February 10, 2023, Nicaraguan Bishop Rolando Alvarez was charged with treason for undermining national integrity and spreading false news, and sentenced to 26 years in prison after the bishop refused to board a flight to the United States with 222 other prisoners who were also detained for vocally criticizing President Daniel Ortega.

As per Reuters, the Pope's comments about Alvarez's arrest were included in his weekly blessing to pilgrims and tourists in St. Peter's Square on Sunday. He had said:

"The news from Nicaragua has grieved me not a little and I cannot help but remember with concern the Bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Alvarez, whom I love so much and who has been sentenced to 26 years in prison, and also the people who have been taken to the United States."

As per an anonymous source who spoke to the Associated Press, Alvarez refused to board a flight to the U.S. as he believed he did nothing wrong by speaking out against the government that is notorious for curbing free speech.

The Pope’s comments come a year after Ortega, who believed the church backed the protests against his government in 2018, criticized the Catholic Church, calling it a “perfect dictatorship” for not allowing members to elect the pope.

In a televised speech last year, Ortega called the priests "killers" working with the United States to overthrow his government.

Meanwhile, concerns for the Nicaraguans have increased as Ortega continues to silence his opponents while intensifying his efforts to establish an authoritarian regime.

This second instalment of a report by PETER FROST into church abuse looks at a terrible scandal in the Roman Catholic church

AT last the Vatican and the Pope are beginning to admit the worldwide scandal of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. They still have a way to go to reveal just how many secrets are buried in the cesspit that is the church’s history.

One major disgrace that needs to be admitted is the vast array of cases of the church stealing and selling babies.

In Ireland the story has been well known for some time. The 2013 film Philomena with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan bought the scandal to a wide audience.

Now from Spain horrendous facts are being revealed of huge numbers of babies stolen from families by Catholics on the orders of fascist dictator Franco but continuing even after his death.

Chile too has its share of babies stolen by the Catholic church. In Argentina too, babies were stolen from families considered to be too poor or too subversive.

Only now in many other South American countries brave investigative journalists just beginning to uncover horrifically similar histories.

It is no surprise that Catholic cardinals in Africa are telling anyone who will listen that nothing like this is happening in their dioceses or ever have in the past.

However these are the same people who preached that condoms spread the HIV/Aids virus, so truth has never been their forte.

Not surprisingly the Pope and the Vatican are refusing to speak about this stealing of babies. They are even instructing nuns and priests to refuse to give evidence in court.

So let’s take a look at some of the cases we do know about.

After the Spanish civil war General Franco and his fascist rebel government decided to punish those who had fought against them.

Anybody who held opposing viewpoints were punished. Franco declared his enemies undesirables and banned them from raising their own children.

Top of the list, of course, were republicans, Marxists, communists, socialists, trade unionists, indeed anyone who had dared to defend the legitimate government against Franco and his fascist rebels or accept his fascist ideology.

Franco went much further, ruling that anyone who lived beneath a specific wage, the poor, were not fit to raise a child.

The job of taking those babies away from single mothers and families who didn’t fit into his idea of ideal citizens was given to an efficient network of priests and nuns within the Catholic church.

They also added any single mothers to their targets for baby theft.

An amazing 300,000 babies were stolen from their parents between 1939 and the 1990s in Spain.

Spanish fascists believed in eugenics. They linked dissident thinking to mental inferiority. Military psychiatrist Antonio Vallejo-Nagera, who led Franco’s office of psychological research, put forward the thesis.

Vallejo-Nagera’s unethical behaviour and treatment of his victims earned him the sobriquet “the Spanish Mengele.” Mengele was, of course, the Nazi doctor who carried out illegal, unethical and often fatal experiments in Nazi concentration camps.

Vallejo-Nagera argued that political beliefs in left-wing families could infect children and damage the mental health of future generations.

He also believed that all women had an atrophied intelligence and their only real role in life was to procreate, unless of course they became nuns.

These thoroughly misogynist and reactionary ideas go a long way to explain the class profile of those who were to become the illegal adopters of the stolen babies.

They were married Catholic women raised in Catholic countries who were unable to have children of their own. Church and social pressure to become mothers was extreme. Having children was seen a Catholic woman’s duty.

"El Pastor", a book by journalists Francesca Ambrogetti and Sergio Rubin that was recently published in Argentina, is the result of several interviews with the Pope on the most important and urgent issues of the Church, from politics to economics, from reforms in the Roman Curia to threats to the 'common home'.

From 'El jesuita' (the Jesuit), written in 2010, to 'El Pastor' (the pastor), a book which has just been published in Argentina: Francesca Ambrogetti, former head of Ansa in Argentina; and Sergio Rubin, of the daily paper El Clarin, return to the figure of Jorge Mario Bergoglio. In their first book they gathered together the reflections of the Cardinal Archbishop of Buenos Aires, whereas in this second, the approach concerns the magisterium of Pope Francis, as well as the challenges faced in the ten years of his pontificate and future prospects such as "revitalizing the proclamation of the Gospel, reducing Vatican centralism, outlawing paedophilia... and fighting economic corruption". A programme of governance, he emphasises, that aims "to execute what was declared by the cardinals in the general congregations on the eve of the conclave".

The book consists of nineteen chapters and a prologue signed by Pope Francis, in which he writes, "I must acknowledge one virtue in Francesca and Sergio: their perseverance". The journalists offer an analysis of the magisterium through periodic interviews conducted over 10 years. Many topics are covered: from migration to the defence of life, the impact of the reforms of the Roman Curia, and the abuse of minors. On this last point, Pope Francis emphasises that his pontificate "will largely be evaluated by how he has dealt with this scourge".

Then, he speaks about marriage and the family, the threatened "common home", the "female genius", and "careerism" in the Church. Concerning homosexuality, Pope Francis emphasises that to "those who have suffered rejection by the Church, I would like to make it known that they are people in the Church".

The Gospel to convert a mentality

Politics is one of the central themes of the book. "Yes, I engage in politics", the Pope replies, 'because everyone must engage in politics. And what is politics? A way of life for the polis, for the city. What I do not do, nor should the Church do, is party politics. But the Gospel has a political dimension, which is to transform the social, even religious, mentality of people" so that it is directed to the common good. Another important theme concerns the economy. Pope Francis reiterates that the beacon to follow is the Social Doctrine of the Church, that he is not condemning capitalism, but that it is necessary, as John Paul II indicated, to follow a "social market economy". Today, he adds, finance prevails and wealth is less and less participatory. "What we can all agree is that the concentration of wealth and inequality have increased. And that there are many people starving."

Clarity in Vatican finances

Pope Francis then dwells on the Vatican's financial affairs, defending the good faith of the "vast majority" of the Church's members. "But it cannot be denied," he says, "that some clerics and many, I would say, false lay 'friends' of the Church have contributed to misappropriating the movable and immovable patrimony, not of the Vatican, but of the faithful". Referring then to the affair of the London property, he emphasised that it was precisely in the Vatican that "the suspicious purchase" was detected. "I rejoiced," says the Pope, "because it means that today the Vatican administration has the resources to shed light on the ugly things that happen inside". With regard to State-Church relations, he says he defends "the secularity of the State, not the secularism that, for example, does not allow religious images in public spaces".

Ready to go to China

Concerning Argentina, the Pope emphasises that "accusations of Peronism are a commonplace" and calls on trade unions to defend the dignity of workers and their rights. He also maintains that his intention to travel to the country "remains valid". 'It is unfair to say I don't want to go'. Regarding the agreement between the Holy See and China, the Pope says he is aware of the problems and sufferings, showing himself willing to go to the Asian country "tomorrow, if it were possible!"
