Oh, the things you will learn in a court filing from the company suing Fox News for defamation (and $1.6 billion).

Donald Trump has been called a lot of things by a lot of people over the last number of years. “Agent Orange.” “Sentient circus peanut.” “Staph infection on the ass of society.” Something that “came out of a clogged drain at the Wonka factory.” Still, no one expected the ex-president to be described in anything less than glowing terms by the gang over at Fox News, the network that effectively served as state TV while he was in office.And yet, at least one of Fox’s top talking heads likened him to none other than the devil back in 2021, all while slinging the guy’s election lies on live TV.

In a text message to his producer, Alex Pfeiffer, sent the day of the January 6 insurrection, Tucker Carlson—friend to war criminals and serial liars alike—called Trump “a demonic force, a destroyer.”

The host added:“But he’s not going to destroy us.”We know this thanks to a Thursday court filing from Dominion Voting Systems, the voting technology company currently suing Fox News for $1.6 billion over the network’s 2020 election coverage.

The filing offers an inside glimpse at what the network’s top stars and executives were saying amongst themselves about Trump’s election lies—i.e., that they were bullshit—despite claiming that the election had been stolen with Dominion’s help.

“From the top down, Fox knew ‘the dominion stuff’ was ‘total bs,’” the filing reads, citing “a mountain of direct evidence.” Positing that the reason the network “peddle[d] this false narrative to its viewers,” attorneys for Dominion said that “Fox’s correct call of Arizona for Joe Biden triggered a backlash among its audience and ‘the network [was] being rejected.’” For example, two days after the election, on November 5, 2020, Carlson texted Pfeiffer to claim that the team that had called Arizona for Biden was going to screw up his reputation as a right-wing crackpot (our words). “We worked really hard to build what we have,” Carlson said, according to the filing. “Those fuckers are destroying our credibility. It enrages me.” Pfeiffer then responded that “many on ‘our side’ are being reckless demagogues right now.” (“Our side” presumably refers to hosts like Carlson, Sean Hannity, and Laura Ingraham.) “Of course they are,” Carlson wrote back. “We’re not going to follow them.” He added that the then president was good at “destroying things. He’s the undisputed world champion of that. He could easily destroy us if we play it wrong.”

The filing notes that, days later, Carlson wrote privately that Trump needed to admit“that there wasn’t enough fraud to change the outcome”of the election. Later, he wrote thatSidney Powell, one of Trump’s lawyers, was “lying” about having evidence of fraud. A few days after that, Carlson expressed similar ideas to Ingraham, saying, “Sidney Powell is lying by the way. I caught her. It’s insane.” Ingraham responded, “Sidney is a complete nut. No one will work with her. Ditto with Rudy.”Carlson replied, “It’s unbelievably offensive to me. Our viewers are good people and they believe it.”

And yet, by mid-January, Carlson was apparently all in on publicly pushing Team Trump’s election lies on his viewers. Just weeks after the insurrection and his likening of Trump to the devil, the prime time host had Mike Lindell on his show, where, per the filing, the My Pillow founder “spouted…conspiracies on air after previewing them for Carlson’s staff during a pre-interview.”

In a statement, Fox News said: “There will be a lot of noise and confusion generated by Dominion and their opportunistic private equity owners, but the core of this case remains about freedom of the press and freedom of speech, which are fundamental rights afforded by the Constitution and protected by New York Times v. Sullivan.” The network also insisted that Dominion “mischaracterized the record, cherry-picked quotes stripped of key context, and spilled considerable ink on facts that are irrelevant under black-letter principles of defamation law.”

Members of the clergy might be required to report child abuse in Washington.

The state Senate unanimously passed a bill that makes clergy mandatory reporters, but it includes a big exception for confession.

“I think it’s a huge problem. For example, I was raped by a parish priest when I was seven and I could have very possibly gone to him for confession,” said Mary Dispenza of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests and Nuns.

Dispenza said when priests confess to one another, there’s no requirement to report abuse.

“I don’t think the seal of confession protects children, I believe it harms them,” she said.

Legal protections for the confessional will be front and center as the clergy mandatory reporting bill now moves to the state House, where a growing number of legislators want to remove the exemption.

“I think the strongest possible bill should pass,” said sponsor Rep. Amy Walen (D-Kirkland). “We’ve grown beyond a time where we can allow that to continue, where terrible things can be confessed and kept secret even though children are harmed.”

Mario Villanueva of the Washington State Catholic Conference told lawmakers his organization supports making clergy mandatory reporters outside of confession, and that the clergy penitent privilege is protected by the First Amendment, and that the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld it since 1818.

“There’s no justification for the rash elimination of a longstanding clergy penitent privilege, the one evidentiary privilege that is founded on the concept of freedom of religion,” Villanueva said.

The sponsor of the bill that passed the Senate, Sen. Noel Frame (D-Seattle), said she hopes it is strengthened in the House.

“The goal is to protect children,” she said.

FATIMA, Portugal - Portugal's Catholic Church on Friday asked victims of child sexual abuse by the clergy for forgiveness, following the publication of an independent report that set out the extent of the offenses.

The damning report on child sexual abuse last month reported that clergy had abused nearly 5,000 children since 1950.

The Portuguese inquiry, commissioned by the Church in the staunchly Catholic country, published its findings after hearing from more than 500 victims last year.

"It is with sorrow that we once again ask forgiveness from all the victims of sexual assaults within the Catholic Church in Portugal," the bishops' conference said in a statement after a meeting in Fatima, central Portugal.

The Church would make a "public gesture" to ask forgiveness in Fatima in April, the statement added. A memorial to the victims was also being planned.

The report said that for years, the hierarchy in the Portuguese Church had systematically covered up the abuse.

"We have to change the culture of the Church," Jose Ornelas Carvalho, bishop of Leiria-Fatima and president of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP) said at a news conference.

The Church would offer support to victims of abuse who wanted it, he added, but said the question of compensation would be a matter for the courts.

The abuse scandal is just the latest in a series of such revelations engulfing the Catholic Church across the world.

Faced with a multitude of clergy sex abuse cases that have come to light worldwide and the accusations of cover-ups, Pope Francis promised in 2019 to root out pedophilia within the Church.

The Church has launched investigations in several other countries, including Australia, France, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.

In a statement broadcast on Twitter Thursday, the pope made it clear that asking for forgiveness, while necessary, would not be enough. "The Church must serve as a model to help solve the issue," he said.

"The Church must offer safe spaces for victims to be heard, supported psychologically, and protected."

The bishop's conference agreed on Friday to set up a new body to put those ideas into action, following one of the recommendations of the independent report. In an open letter published on Thursday, progressive elements in the Church called for it to implement the main recommendations.

Any members of the clergy accused of abuse who were still serving should be suspended, the letter said &ndash; and those bishops who had helped cover up the abuse should go. The report's authors have provided the Church hierarchy with a list of clerics accused of having carried out the abuse.

But Bishop Ornelas told reporters Friday: "We have only received a list of names, without describing the nature of the accusations. "Each bishop will have to decide what measures to take in the light of civil and canonical law."

Pope Francis is due to visit the Portuguese capital Lisbon in August, and the capital's auxiliary bishop, Americo Aguiar, has said he may meet some of the victims of abuse.

Prominent Christian author John Perry, who has also co-authored a book with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, has beenaccused of child molestationin two separate lawsuits.Updated with Perry's statement at the bottom

John Perry, a prolific author who co-wrote two books with former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee and co-wrote one with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, was accused of child molestation in two separate lawsuits, BuzzFeed News has found.

A 2012 police investigation of Perry's alleged offenses found that "the allegations of sexual battery were sustained" but that the statute of limitations had expired.

Perry co-wrote Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America about Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign. He also did research and writing for Huckabee's 2007 book Character Is the Issue, a memoir of his early time as governor. Perry also co-wrote So Help Me God, Moore's autobiographical account of fighting to keep a monument to the Ten Commandments at Alabama's Supreme Court.

Those books are just a few of the titles produced with Perry's help: He wrote For Faith & Family: Changing America by Strengthening the Family with Richard Land, the president of Southern Evangelical Seminary, a book with former Southern Baptist Convention president James T. Draper, as well as a book with Frank Page, the president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee. Perry even co-authored The Vow, the book made into a feature film starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. Perry also lists writing two books for prominent pastor John F. MacArthur on his website.

In a sworn affidavit submitted during divorce proceedings, Perry's ex-wife attests that she "filed for divorce as a result of Mr. Perry's inappropriate marital conduct, to which he admitted to in his Response to Interrogatories numbers 1 and 2." Throughout the court documents, "inappropriate marital conduct" appears to be a euphemism for the alleged molestation.

Perry's responses are not included in the case file.

Another filing, submitted by Perry's ex-wife's attorney earlier in the same proceedings, refers to Perry's "admitted sexual abuse" of a minor child. Perry's response to that filing — also submitted prior to his ex-wife's affidavit — does not deny the abuse, or that Perry admitted it. Instead, Perry claims that "there was never any testimony or other evidence of any kind presented" to the court, "or any orders or findings of fact […] regarding any alleged sexual abuse of any minor child relative to the parties' divorce or any other legal proceeding."

In spring 2016 when Trump had emerged as the probable Republican candidate, the Free Beacon stopped funding investigation into Trump From April 2016 through October 2016, the law firm Perkins Coie, on behalf of the Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee, retained Fusion GPS to continue opposition research on Trump. In June 2016, Fusion GPS retained Christopher Steele, a private British corporate intelligence investigator and former MI-6 agent, to research any Russian connections to Trump.
