If you’re among the billions of people using Chrome, then Google’s stark new data harvesting disclosures should come as a nasty surprise. Worse, a new Chrome revelation, one that hasn’t yet made headlines but which is detailed below, should serve as an even more serious warning. Here’s what you need to do now.
Google is under fire this week, after the surprising amount of your data harvested by Chrome has been disclosed. This is a genuine threat to your privacy. Worse, a more serious issue for Google, detailed below, hasn’t even made headlines yet. Chrome is totally out of step with Safari, Edge and Firefox, shattering Google’s “privacy first web” claims. All of which should give you a serious reason to quit Chrome today.
Last year, when Apple said that it would force app developers to disclose the scale of data collected and linked to its users, all eyes turned to Google and Facebook. Many suspected that this level of scrutiny would shine an alarming light on the world’s two most valuable data machines. And that’s exactly what has happened.
The issue for Google is that, unlike Facebook, it sits both sides of the fence. Guarding your privacy on one side—with Android and and its mail, docs and drive ecosystem, and an advertising behemoth on the other, collecting $100 billion plus in ad spend, the majority of its annual revenue. In that regard, it’s really no different to Facebook.
And so, there’s little surprise that Apple’s mandatory privacy labels have shown these two ad giants to be well out of step with their peers when it comes to collecting your data. If your business model is monetizing your users’ information, then you’ll want to collect as much as you reasonably can—and Google and Facebook don’t disappoint.
“Google doesn’t care about protecting user privacy,” privacy-centric DuckDuckGo warned this week, when Chrome’s privacy label was finally revealed, “they care about protecting their surveillance business model. If they really cared about privacy, they would just stop spying on billions of people around the world.”
DuckDuckGo focused on the data that Google collects, linked to its users. But there’s a different dataset in the detail, included below, that’s much more damaging to Google and which shows Chrome to be shockingly different to its major rivals.

I have already warned that Gmail collects more data than other leading mail platforms. In its defense, Google pointed me at comments made by CEO Sundar Pichai, that “we don’t use information in apps where you primarily store personal content—such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Photos—for advertising purposes, period.”
You’ll note that Chrome isn’t on that list, nor is it an app “where you primarily store personal content.” But it is an app where you enter private and sensitive search terms and conduct private transactions. But what Chrome does have in common with Gmail is an avaricious and out of step approach to data harvesting.
Google took its time adding privacy labels, with a gap between app updates of some three months after the labels became mandatory. But now we can see the detail for Chrome, just as we did for Gmail. As I commented on Gmail, protecting user privacy is a binary philosophy, “you either believe it’s the right thing to do, or you don’t.” And these new labels have made Google’s (and Facebook’s) privacy claims sound hollow.

Crown receives $8 billion private equity takeover offer from Blackstone
James Packer's casino operator Crown Resorts has confirmed an $8 billion takeover offer from US private equity giant Blackstone.
The ASX-listed Crown has confirmed an unsolicited, non-binding offer of $11.85 a share was submitted to the company by Blackstone yesterday.
With just over 677 million shares in the company, the initial offer price values Crown at slightly more than $8 billion, which the company said is a 19 per cent premium to its share price since its most recent financial report was released last month.
Blackstone already owns nearly 10 per cent of Crown, which it bought off Melco Resorts in April 2020 for $8.15 per share.
James Packer is the biggest shareholder, with the most recent data on data on Eikon showing Mr Packer's Consolidated Press Holdings owned around 36 per cent of the casino's shares.
Crown said its board had not yet formed a view on the merits of the proposal and would commence a process to assess it.
In the meantime, it advised shareholders that they do not need to take any action and that there is no certainty that the proposal would result in a transaction.
Royal commissions cast shadow over Crown
The company said it will also consult with "relevant stakeholders" including regulatory authorities.

Texas Roadhouse founder and CEO Kent Taylor has died by suicide aged 65.
The restaurant chain announced the tragic news in a Facebook post, saying Taylor died on Thursday after experiencing from severe post-coronavirus symptoms, including tinnitus.
'Kent battled and fought hard like the former track champion that he was, but the suffering that greatly intensified in recent days became unbearable,' Taylor's family said in a statement.
Taylor founded Texas Roadhouse in 1993 after coming up with the idea on a cocktail napkin. The first location opened in Louisville, Kentucky, where the company is based. Today, it boasts 630 restaurants in 49 states and 10 countries.
Taylor held various roles at the company, serving as chief executive and chairman of the board until his death. Last spring he made headlines when he gave up his salary to help support frontline workers during the pandemic.

Although body cam footage of Campos shows no blood on his leg or entry wound, Campos told police that he thought that he had been shot in the leg with a “BB gun” which even investigators thought was odd.

The Media Got It Wrong: Police Captain Didn't Say the Atlanta Spa Killer Was Having a 'Bad Day'
A moment from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office press conference on Wednesday quickly went viral: Jay Baker, a spokesperson for the police department handling the investigation into the horrific Atlanta spa murders, said that suspect Robert Aaron Long was having a bad day.
"He was pretty much fed up, kind of at the end of his rope, and yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did," said Baker.
The comment struck many people as overly sympathetic toward Long, as if Baker was making excuses for someone who stands accused of killing six Asian-American women in cold blood. A 20-second video clip of Baker's statement was shared on Twitter by Vox journalist Aaron Rupar and swiftly went viral, earning widespread condemnation. Many saw it as evidence that cops are desperate to discount the culpability of white male criminals. For instance, Kimberlé Crenshaw, a law professor and inventor of the term "intersectionality," described Baker's comments as "bone-chilling," and castigated him for refusing to acknowledge "the misogynistic dimensions of anti-Asian racism."
A police officer excusing Long's actions as merely the result of him having a "bad day" would indeed be contemptible. But that's not what Baker did. In fact, many of the people so infuriated about the quote were misled by Rupar's edit of the video.
The full video (the relevant section starts at about 13:50) makes clear that Baker was not providing his own commentary, but rather summarizing what Long had told the investigators. The "bad day" line was proceeded by a clarification that this was Long's own explanation, as related to the police. Baker did not endorse it.

Rep. Tom Reed won’t seek re-election after sex harass claims
Rep. Tom Reed, a GOP congressman from upstate New York, said Sunday that he won’t be running for reelection — or for governor next year — following allegations he molested a female lobbyist four years ago.
Reed also apologized to Nicolette Davis, who told the Washington Post last week that the congressman targeted her with unwanted sexual advances at a Minneapolis bar in 2017.
“Simply put, my behavior caused her pain, showed her disrespect and was unprofessional. I was wrong, I am sorry, and I take full responsibility,” Reed said in a statement.
The lawmaker — who had claimed on Friday that Davis’ account was inaccurate — said Sunday that the incident occurred when he was struggling with an alcohol addiction, for which he later received treatment.
“In addition to apologizing to those I have impacted, including Ms. Davis, I will be seeking to help those wrestling with addiction in any way I can,” Reed said.
“As I go forward, I will strive to be a better human being, continue to fight for what I believe in, and to make people’s lives better in any way I can. I hope this formal apology is just the start.”
Reed, 49, is married to his college sweetheart, Jean, with whom he has two children. A former mayor of his hometown of Corning, he has served in Congress since 2011.
He recently indicated that he was considering challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2022, saying the scandal-scarred three-term Democrat “needs to be taken down.”
Instead, Reed said he will be retiring from public service when his term ends in January 2023.

ROME — Pope Francis called out the Mafia Sunday for enriching themselves through corruption during the coronavirus pandemic.
Today in Italy “we celebrate the Day of remembrance and commitment in memory of the innocent victims of the mafia,” the pope said following his weekly Angelus prayer. “The Mafia are present in various parts of the world and, exploiting the pandemic; they are enriching themselves through corruption.”
“Saint John Paul II denounced their ‘culture of death,’ and Benedict XVI condemned them as ‘ways of death,” the pontiff added.
“These structures of sin, Mafia structures, contrary to Christ’s Gospel, exchange faith with idolatry,” he said. “Today let us remember all the victims and let us renew our commitment against the Mafia.”
As his predecessors did before him, Francis has condemned the mafia in the severest of terms, saying in 2014 that their members engage in the “the adoration of evil” and are therefore “excommunicated.”
“Those who follow this evil path in life, such as members of the Mafia, are not in communion with God; they are excommunicated!” the pope said during a trip to Cassano allo Ionio in Italy’s southern Calabria region.
“This evil must be fought; it must be cast out! One must say ‘no’ to it!” he said, calling the local crime organization, the ‘Ndrangheta, a manifestation of the “adoration of evil and contempt for the common good” and said the Church would fight to combat organized crime.
“Our kids demand it, our youth, in need of hope, demand it. Faith can help empower us to respond to these needs,” he said.
The following year, the pope compared abortionists to members of the Mafia, insisting they follow the code of the Mafia, who “take out” a person when he gets in their way.
“No problem is solved by taking out a person. Never, ever. That is the code of the Mafia: ‘There’s a problem, let’s take this guy out.’ Never,” Francis said.
“The degree of progress of a civilization is measured by its ability to protect life, especially in its most fragile stages,” he said.
