Southern Taiwan would be more heavily affected by the storm if the northward turn takes place later than forecast, she said.

Nasa reveals shock images of battered Mars rover after ‘worst abuse’ in its search for alien life

A robot on the hunt for signs of alien life on Mars has taken a huge battering, shock new images released by Nasa show.

The Curiosity rover has been busy gathering rocks for more than 12 years to workout whether the Red Planet was ever able to support life.

It's been exploring the Gale Crater since 2012, clocking over 20 miles.

But the lengthy visit has taken its toll on the device, after surviving multiple dust storms and Mars' challenging terrain.

Images released by Nasa show Curiosity's wheels have sustained some extensive damage.

They show very clear gaping holes in the aluminium wheels.

It's been exploring the Gale Crater since 2012, clocking over 20 miles.

But the lengthy visit has taken its toll on the device, after surviving multiple dust storms and Mars' challenging terrain.

Images released by Nasa show Curiosity's wheels have sustained some extensive damage.

They show very clear gaping holes in the aluminium wheels. Curiosity has six wheels in total.

Fortunately, Nasa doesn't appear to be too worried about the damage.

The $2.5billion (£1.9billion) machine is "still holding up well despite taking some of the worst abuse from Mars", according to Ashley Stroupe, Mission Operations Engineer at Nasa.

Holes and tears grew quite a bit in Curiosity's first year on the Red Planet.

Since then, experts controlling the bot have been trying to avoid nasty environments to prevent further holes.

They've also issued special updates to adjust speed.

"The wheel wear has been cause for concern, and although we estimate they have years of life still in them, we do want to reduce that wear whenever possible to extend the life of the wheels," Art Rankin, part of Nasa's test team, said back in 2017.

During it's time on Mars, Curiosity has stumbled across an array of mysterious objects.

The space agency recently revealed it found yellow crystals that "shouldn’t be there".

Curiosity has certainly defied the odds, far outliving the two-year mission time period it was originally given.

These days the bot isn't alone on Mars, with the Perseverance also investigating on the surface.

Nasa built thicker, more durable wheels for Perseverance to avoid the sort of damage seen on Curiosity.

Car-sized Perseverance has been on Mars since February 18, 2021.

China launches reusable Shijian-19 satellite for space breeding and technology tests

China launched the retrievable and reusable Shijian-19 satellite Friday to carry out a range of experiments in low Earth orbit.

A Long March 2D rocket lifted off at 8:30 a.m. Eastern (1030 UTC) Sept. 27 from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert.

Exhaust from the hypergolic rocket billowed into the air as the launcher ascended into largely clear blue skies above the spaceport.

The Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology (SAST) announced launch success, revealing the payload to be the Shijian-19 satellite.

Shijian-19 is a retrievable satellite developed by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST).

The same arm of China’s main space contractor is also developing a reusable crew spacecraft for low Earth orbit (LEO) and lunar and deep space missions.

U.S. Space Force’s Space Delta 2 tracked Shijian-19 in a 322 by 339-kilometer-altitude orbit inclined by 41.6 degrees.

The mission is geared towards space breeding experiments and carries various plant seeds selected from a range of locations.

Researchers hope the exposure to the radiation environment of LEO will instigate mutations that may bring about advantages such as shorter breeding cycles and other beneficial variations.

The mission patch features a parachute, returning capsule, and three rabbits, which may be drawing on themes of fertility and a link to the space breeding experiments.

In China, space breeding has become an increasingly important avenue for attempting to improve agricultural outputs.

Exposure to space conditions is thought to accelerate genetic mutations that may enhance crop resilience and productivity.

The Shijian-19 mission also includes in-orbit flight test verification tests for domestic components and raw materials and the development and application of new space technologies.

The reusable spacecraft is intended to be utilized for this and other microgravity science and space life science experiments.

The mission also carries payloads from five countries, including Thailand and Pakistan, according to the China National Space Administration (CNSA).

CAST officials had presented the reusable, retrievable Shijian satellite series back in 2018.

It was stated that around 15 missions were planned for the period 2019-2025. Friday was, however, the first launch.

The Shijian-19 satellite, weighing approximately 3,500 kilograms, has different configurations for varying mission durations.

The short-term version, designed for missions lasting about two weeks, will return to Earth promptly.

The long-term configuration, equipped with solar arrays on its propulsion and power module, will remain in orbit longer, supporting extended experiments.

The recoverable portion can carry between 500 to 600 kilograms of payload.

The landing site was initially stated to be Siziwang Banner in Inner Mongolia, but the Dongfeng landing area, closer to Jiuquan and where China’s Shenzhou crews now return, is a more likely site.

The payload fairing for the mission was attached to the rocket 48 hours ahead of launch. Conversely, China’s previous retrievable satellite launch, Shijian-10 in 2016, did not feature a payload fairing.

The Shijian-19 mission is part of China’s broader space program, which includes ambitious plans for deep space exploration, a range of experiments aboard the Tiangong space station, and advancements in reusable space technologies.

The launch was China’s 46th of 2024. It follows the launch of five satellites on the fourth Lijian-1 (Kinetica-1) solid rocket from CAS Space, Sept. 24.

CASC said late September it plans to conduct more than 20 launches before the end of the year. These include the Shenzhou-19 crewed and Tianzhou-8 cargo missions to Tiangong space station.

The new Long March 12 rocket is expected to have its inaugural flight, while a Long March 8 will also fly from Hainan’s new commercial spaceport.

CONYERS, Ga. (AP) — More than 90,000 residents east of Atlanta were told to keep sheltering in place Monday a day after a chemical plant fire sent a massive plume of dark smoke high into the sky that could been seen for miles.

The haze and chemical smell had spread to Atlanta by Monday morning, prompting firefighters to use detectors to check the quality of air in various parts of the city, Mayor Andre Dickens said.

Closer to the source of the fire, officials said chlorine, a harmful irritant, had been detected in the air from the fire at the BioLab plant in Conyers, Georgia, the Rockdale County government said in statement early Monday. The plant is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of downtown Atlanta.

“For everyone sheltering in place, the best practice is to turn the air conditioning off and keep windows and doors shut,” the statement said.

In Atlanta, officials said they believe the hazy conditions and chemical smell is “related to the BioLab fire, but why we are seeing the change in conditions is what we are attempting to figure out.”

“Latest plume modeling indicates it moving to the northeast, which it is clearly not,” the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — What you need to know:

Fire started around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

The sprinkler system reacted with a chemical inside the factory.

Roof has collapsed on building along with several walls.

Piedmont Rockdale has moved some patients, others to shelter-in-place.

What happened:

All Rockdale County residents have been ordered to shelter in place after a chemical fire broke out at the Biolab facility on Old Covington Highway.

It all started around 5:30 a.m. Sunday when a sprinkler system malfunctioned, which seems to have mixed with a chemical creating a plume. You can see the smoke billowing miles into the sky, changing colors throughout the day from black, white, red and now to a yellowish hue seen by Channel 2′s Michael Doudna on Sunday evening.

Crews got the fire under control on Sunday morning, but it reignited around 12:15 p.m.

Officials say the fire has since been put out, but the building itself has collapsed.

“The roof is collapsed in totally as well as several of the walls, which is why we have been trying to assemble it all together and move it away to make a better path to move out the product,” Rockdale County Fire Chief Marian McDaniel said.

Officials are stressing that people should take this seriously.

“As the plume starts out, it could become very dangerous, and toxic. So, until we get those readings from EPA and EPD, we don’t know what those plumes consist of, so we want to keep everyone safe and away from it as much as possible,” Rockdale County Emergency Management Director Sharon Webb said.

Israel has been busy over the weekend striking multiple fronts. Not only has it expanded airstrikes on Beirut in the wake of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's Friday death, but it is attacking Yemen and Syria as well.

Starting late last week into Saturday, Yemen's Iran-linked Houthis announced the launch of several ballistic missiles toward Tel Aviv, which Israel's military said were intercepted. And on Friday, in an incident which went underreported (given headlines were focused heavily on Beirut events), three US warships in the Red Sea came under simultaneous rocket attacks from the Houthis.

"The Houthi said they had targeted three U.S. warships which media reports tonight are identifying as the guided missile destroyers USS Spruance and USS Stockdale and the littoral combat ship USS Indianapolis. They were reported to have been north of the Bab el-Mandeb at the time," The Maritime Executive reported.

"U.S. officials are confirming that warships in the Red Sea were targeted with possibly the largest barrage since the conflict began with the Houthis in Yemen nearly 10 months ago," the publication added.

On Sunday Israeli jets had the assistance of US military intelligence as they conducted a massive airstrike on Yemen's key port of Hodeidah. It happened in the early evening local time. Axios reports that "sensitive" Houthis facilities were on the target list.

Yemen's Health Ministry in the aftermath announced that at least four people were killed and 40 others injured in the Israeli raid, which left massive plumes of smoke over the area.

Israeli media has confirmed that it was the biggest Israeli strike on Yemen since the conflict began in the wake of Oct.7 of last year. "Dozens of Israeli aircraft, including F-15I fighter planes, participated in the operation, striking 1,800 kilometers from Israeli territory after the Houthis fired three ballistic missiles on the Tel Aviv and central Israel areas in recent weeks, including one on Saturday," Jerusalem Post details.

During Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Friday United Nations speech, the Israeli leader said his country is fighting a war on seven fronts. He brought props, as has been his pattern at major UN speeches:

The Israeli leader explained “the blessing” was establishing a “landbridge” from India to Israel. The blessing requires Saudi Arabia to enter the Abraham Accords and normalize ties with Israel. Netanyahu claimed that would have happened, but the October 7 Hamas attack prevented the deal.

In the map titled “the curse,” five countries were represented in black: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon. The Israeli leader claimed that Tehran was working to eliminate Tel Aviv using its allies in the region. Netanyahu presented the conflict as a battle between forces of civilization against barbarism.

US Military Airstrikes Kill 37 Terrorists In Syria

The U.S. military targeted and eliminated more than three dozen terrorists in Syria in two mid-September strikes, U.S. Central Command announced Sunday.

“U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Forces conducted two targeted strikes in Syria, killing 37 terrorist operatives, including multiple senior leaders of the terrorist organizations of ISIS and Hurras al-Din, an Al Qaeda affiliate,” CENTCOM’s statement began.

The U.S. military carried out the first airstrike early Sept. 16 against a remote ISIS training camp in central Syria, according to the statement. No fewer than 28 Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) operatives — including at least four senior leaders — were reportedly killed.

The second airstrike occurred Sept. 24 in northwest Syria. Among the nine terrorist operatives killed was Marwan Bassam ‘Abd-al-Ra’uf, a senior Hurras al-Din leader responsible for overseeing military operations from Syria, CENTCOM said.

“Hurras al-Din is an Al Qaeda-affiliated organization based in Syria with global aspirations to conduct attacks against U.S. and Western interests,” the statement continues.

CENTCOM forces eliminated another senior Hurras al-Din member, Abu-’Abd al-Rahman al-Makki, in a similar Aug. 23 strike, according to a separate statement.
