As House Republicans threaten contempt of Congress charges against Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray, a majority of voters suspect FBI officials tried to cover up a scandal involving President Joe Biden and his family.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 60% of Likely U.S. Voters believe it is likely that top officials at the FBI have helped cover-up wrongdoing by Biden or his family members, including 48% who think it’s Very Likely. Section of heavily traveled I-95 collapses in Philadelphia after tanker truck catches fire

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — An elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed early Sunday in Philadelphia after a tanker truck carrying flammable cargo caught fire, closing a heavily traveled segment of the East Coast’s main north-south highway indefinitely, authorities said.

Transportation officials warned of extensive delays and street closures and urged drivers to avoid the area in the city’s northeast corner. Officials said the tanker contained a petroleum product that may have been hundreds of gallons of gasoline. The fire took about an hour to get under control.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were gone and the southbound lanes were “compromised” by heat from the fire, said Derek Bowmer, battalion chief of the Philadelphia Fire Department. Runoff from the fire or perhaps broken gas lines caused explosions underground, he added.

Some kind of crash happened on a ramp underneath northbound I-95 around 6:15 a.m., said state Transportation Department spokesman Brad Rudolph, and the northbound section above the fire collapsed quickly.

The southbound lanes were heavily damaged, “and we are assessing that now,” Rudolph said.

A heavily trafficked portion of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia has collapsed due to heat from a vehicle fire below. Officials say the northbound lanes are gone entirely. Officials say the southbound lanes have been “compromised” by the heat. In the densely populated Northeast, it’s likely that this collapse has severe consequences for interstate travelers.

Video and photo from the scene showed a massive piece of concrete collapsed onto the road below. City authorities say they’re unsure of a timeline needed for cleanup.

Early reports indicated that the fire came from a tanker truck, but officials did not immediately confirm that.An onlooker told the Associated Press that the road began buckling and eventually collapsed just moments after black smoke from the fire appeared. Explosions underground were also reported, officials attributing them to runoff from the fire or perhaps from broken gas lines.

Officials were concerned of potential environmental hazards for the nearby Delaware River.

A drone is expected to complete an assessment of the damage.

Brown, who also played baseball at Ohio State as a pitcher, is survived by his wife, Megan, and their four children.

MIKE MCKENNA: Republicans Are Trying To Sneak A Carbon Tax Through The Back Door

Fresh from the looming trainwreck that is the deal to increase the debt limit, four Republican senators recently signed onto legislation that would require the Biden administration to study the feasibility of . . . a national tax on energy that would be collected at the gas pump and in electricity and heating bills.

The four Republicans — Senator Cramer (R-ND), Senator Cassidy (R-LA), Senator Graham (R-SC), and Senator Murkowski (R-AK) — joined five Democrats in asking Team Biden to determine the amount of energy used — and carbon dioxide emitted — by various countries in the production of essentially everything that makes modern life possible (aluminum, iron, steel, plastic, crude oil, batteries, etc.).

Eventually, the information would be used to impose tariffs on those countries who — in the view of the Biden crew — emitted too much carbon dioxide while creating those products.

Unfortunately for American consumers — and this is the important part of the story — the process will lead inevitably to the federal government setting a price for carbon dioxide in these United States.

That means only one thing: a nationwide tax on carbon dioxide, which is, of course, really a tax on energy in all its forms. Such a tax would be incredibly regressive, would damage the economy, and make everything grown, made, or moved more expensive.

The sad, sick part of this story is that the Republican senators are fully aware of that conclusion; they are in fact counting on it. Senator Cramer told the Washington Post that: “We spend so much time as Republicans saying hell no to people who want to tax carbon . . . . this is the low-hanging fruit of climate policy or trade policy or whatever you want to call it.”

In short, this is a way to break the bad news of a nationwide energy tax gently to the slow-witted voters who oppose the idea.

Senator Cramer wasn’t done. He told E&E News that: “It’s easier to take a second step once you’ve taken a first step. It can create a little momentum . . . and it gets people thinking about it in a different context than, ‘Oh, my God, it’s a carbon tax.’”

Here’s the problem: Cramer knows what he is proposing will in fact lead us directly to a carbon dioxide/energy tax. He’s counting on voters to be too stupid or too distracted to realize that.

Senator Murkowski was equally chatty with E&E News: “Whether it’s something that would move us in the direction [of] — whether it’s the price on carbon or the border adjustment … I think it’s going to be important to know a little bit more about of the impact of all this.”

Here’s the impact, Senator: Alaskans will pay more for energy and more for everything made or moved with energy.

Donald Trump Announces Press Conference At Landscaping Firm Located Between Adult Book Store And Crematorium

In a series of tweets on Saturday morning, some of which have since been deleted, Donald Trump announced that he would be holding a press conference at a Philadelphia-area landscaping firm with a location that raised some eyebrows.

Trump wrote that his legal team would be holding a press conference to discuss developments in the presidential race. Trump appeared to have some difficulty pinning down the exact location, first saying it was simply at “Four Seasons” before deleting the tweet and rewriting it to say that it would be held at “Four Season’s (sic) Landscaping.” He finally clarified that it was not the Philadelphia hotel of the same name but instead a small firm called Four Seasons Total Landscaping.

The site of the event earned some mockery online. As the Mirror pointed out, the small business had an unusual location — tucked between an adult bookstore and a cremation center.

“Fantasy Island is an Adult book store, which advertises that it sells DVDs, lotions and novelty gifts,” the report noted, adding that the business advertises “viewing booths” inside for patrons.

“On the other side of the road is the Delaware Valley cremation center,” the outlet wrote.

Trump’s announcement came just before major news networks called the state of Pennsylvania for Biden, putting him over the 270 electoral vote threshold and unofficially making him the president-elect.

The president’s campaign has been filing legal challenges in several states, claiming that poll watchers were not allowed proper access and making unfounded allegations of election fraud.

CBS News reported that shortly after Biden was projected as the election’s winner, Rudy Giuliani said that Trump would not be conceding, noting that there were “at least 600,000 ballots” in question across the state of Pennsylvania. The president’s lawyer claimed to have statements from 25 poll watchers saying they were prevented from properly monitoring the process.

“I could have brought about 50 with me,” Giuliani said at the press conference, claiming that some did not want to be seen publicly for fear of retribution.

Other reports have indicated that Trump will not concede, even given clear evidence that he lost, and that he plans to continue fighting through the courts.

Trump and his allies have been criticized for making allegations of election fraud but not offering proof of the claims, and some have been called out for spreading misleading or false information. Twitter hid a number of Trump’s tweets behind messages telling viewers that the information was not verified or contained disputed claims. That included a tweet just hours after polls had closed claiming that he had won the race.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr says he believes Donald Trump is 'toast' if 'even half' of the allegations in the indictment against him are true.

Barr - who was appointed by Trump to serve as the nation's top prosecutor in 2019 - has described the indictment as highly comprehensive and incredibly damaging to Trump's reputation.

'I was shocked by the degree of sensitivity of these documents and how many there were, ... and I think the counts under the Espionage Act that he willfully retained those documents are solid counts', Barr said on Sunday.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro will issue a disaster declaration on Monday to begin repairs on I-95 after a truck fire caused a portion of the highway to collapse in Northeast Philadelphia Sunday morning, sparking major traffic delays that are expected to intensify this week.

During a press conference early Sunday evening, Shapiro said that the complete rebuild of I-95 is expected to take "some number of months" and that they would have a specific timeline for the reconstruction following a review from engineers and PennDOT officials. He also said officials were working on interim solutions to connect both sides of the highway.

“To expedite this process and to cut through the red tape, tomorrow morning I plan to issue a disaster declaration, allowing the Commonwealth to immediately draw down federal funds and move quickly to repair and reconstruct this roadway,” Shapiro said. “I’ve spoken directly to Secretary Pete Buttigeig of the United States Department of Transportation, along with Senator Casey, Congressman Boyle and other federal officials.”

Shapiro said all of the state’s federal partners pledged “complete and total support and assistance” in creating alternative routes for motorists during the rebuild.

“Secretary Buttigieg has assured me that there will be absolutely no delay in getting federal funds deployed to quickly help us rebuild this critical artery,” Shapiro said. “I-95 of course is a critical roadway. It supports our economy and plays an important role in our everyday lives.”

JPMorgan agrees to settle with Epstein victims

The original complaint said that the bank ignored red flags in Epstein's financial activity because he was valued as a wealthy client.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. on Monday said it reached a tentative settlement with the victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

"The parties believe this settlement is in the best interests of all parties, especially the survivors who were the victims of Epstein’s terrible abuse," JPMorgan said, according to Reuters.

The proposal would settle a case filed in Manhattan federal court in November by an anonymous woman on behalf of Epstein's victims, which could potentially be more than 100 women, The New York Times reported.

The original complaint said that the bank ignored red flags in Epstein's financial activity because he was valued as a wealthy client.

The settlement was reached for an undisclosed sum. 

Epstein reportedly at one point had at least $120 million in assets with the bank. He committed suicide in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges.

I've carefully reviewed the indictment of Trump by his political opponents at the Biden Justice Department. (.@JudicialWatch has nearly 30 years of experience litigating federal and presidential records issues, including the famous "Clinton sock drawer" case.)

The document dishonestly ignores the U.S. Constitution, the Presidential Records Act, legal precedent, and the DOJ's/Archives' previous position that WH records a president takes with him when he leaves the White House are presumptively personal and not subject to review by partisan Biden appointees at DOJ or Archives.

Under the Constitution, federal law and precedent, none of the documents are currently "classified" or "national defense information" that restricts Trump's handing of them.

They are ALL his personal records and, frankly, should be returned to him. If justice prevails, this indictment won't survive scrutiny by honest, constitutionalist judges and will be thrown out.

Republican presidential candidate former Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R-AR) Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” argued that his fellow Republicans should not promise to pardon former President Donald Trump.

Anchor Dana Bash said, “You just heard your fellow 2024 candidate Vivek Ramaswamy say he would pardon Donald Trump on his first day in office. What is your reaction?”

Hutchinson said, “Well, that’s wrong. It is simply wrong for a candidate to use the pardon power of the United States of the president in order to curry votes and in order to get an applause line. It is just wrong. It shouldn’t happen that way. If you start down that path it is unending. And so we shouldn’t be promising and holding out the fig leaf of a pardon because that undermines our jury system. It undermines the grand jury that found probable cause to have him say there is going to be a pardon anyway for this. That really undermines the rule of law in our country. I have served my lifetime supporting. And it is offensive to me that anyone would be holding out a pardon in these circumstances.”

He added, “It is a legitimate campaign issue. We do not need to have our commander-in-chief of this country not protecting our nation’s secrets.”

Miami passes 'disorderly conduct' law for public parks, despite free speech concerns

The City of Miami now prohibits "disorderly conduct" and "loud and aggressive" behavior in public parks with a newly passed ordinance, despite concerns that the law may infringe on First Amendment activity.

At a Thursday morning city commission meeting, elected officials discussed a new ordinance that was said to take aim at violence and untoward behavior in city-owned parks. The item was initially sponsored by Commissioners Manolo Reyes, Joe Carollo and Sabina Covo.

"What I don't want in the parks is what we have seen — [people] that are disruptive, they can get into violence or anything that goes against the safety of the people that are using the parks," Reyes said from the dais during the meeting.

Though she originally co-sponsored the ordinance, Commissioner Covo withdrew her sponsorship on Thursday, citing concerns that she said others had brought to her attention as to the law's potential effect on speech and protest.

"When I was briefed I understood that this was violence in parks, that this was a situation where we could have real misconduct. And I am getting information that it could limit free speech and protest in parks. That's why I have a conflict now with it," Covo said from the dais.

During public comment, local Democratic Party activist Thomas Kennedy brought up First Amendment concerns. "I think it's way too broad," he said. "I think it's an assault on free speech. I think it should be killed."

After the pushback, the ordinance was amended to limit its scope to prohibit actions including "loud and aggressive behavior" — rather than "loud or aggressive behavior" — as well as "physical altercations," persistent and excessive shouting and any behavior that disrupts other people's ability to use a public park.

The item passed 4 to 1, with Commissioner Covo voting against it despite the amendment.

The ordinance comes nearly two years after Florida's "Anti-Riot" law, which was pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, was blocked by the courts. The law was criticized for being overly broad with its definition of riots and public disturbances, and was cited by a United Nations committee for restricting free speech.

Top Biden Official Admits to Lying to Congress

A top official in Democrat President Joe Biden’s administration has admitted to lying during a testimony before Congress.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm lied to U.S. senators when she claimed not to own individual stocks.

On April 20, Granholm, a Biden appointee, told the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that she did not own individual stocks, instead owning mutual funds.

In a June 9 letter to Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Granholm admitted that she gave a false statement during the Capitol Hill appearance.

“I mistakenly told the Committee that I did not own any individual stocks, whereas I should have said that I did not own any conflicting stocks,” Granholm wrote.

Granholm said she divested from assets that could be in conflict with her duties as part of being confirmed as energy secretary.

However, Granholm said she retained stocks that government ethics officials determined would not conflict with those duties.

Granholm has since sold those stocks.

“In order to make my financial holdings consistent with my testimony, on May 18, 2023, I divested my remaining stock holdings which consisted of stock in six companies, even though these assets were deemed non-conflicting,” Granholm said.

Granholm did not identify the companies.

She said they would be identified on her annual disclosure report.

The report is expected to be available in mid-June.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), the top Republican on the committee, blasted Granholm’s actions.

“Secretary Granholm lied to the committee about her family’s stock holdings,” Barrasso said in a statement.

“This comes after her failure to follow basic ethics and disclosure rules,” he added.

“This is a troubling pattern. It is unacceptable.”

Granholm previously acknowledged to the Senate that she violated stock disclosure rules by listing stock sales in 2022 months later than required.

She also violated the Hatch Act when she endorsed Democrats while making an official appearance.

Granholm did not appear to be under oath when she made the false statement to the panel in April, according to video footage of the hearing.

Most witnesses testifying before the Senate are not sworn in.

One federal law prohibits making false statements under oath that they do not believe to be true.

Another law bars “knowingly and willfully” making false statements “in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States.”

Violations of either can land a person up to five years in prison.

However, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) rarely brings cases against officials who lie, regardless of whether they’re under oath.

President Donald Trump became one of the rare exceptions when he was charged with allegedly making false statements and other crimes last week.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), who was questioning Granholm when she made the false statement, was outraged to discover that she had lied to him.

“Granholm lied to me on April 20—and it took the Administration 6 full weeks to admit it. Brazen,” Hawley wrote on Twitter.

“It is time to BAN all senior executive branch officials and all members of Congress from owning & trading stock.”

Granholm also disclosed in the new letter that Ford stock her husband and she held in retirement accounts was sold on March 22, 2021, during the confirmation process and that she “believed that the divestiture of Ford was complete.”

But she learned in May 2023 that her husband, Daniel Mulhern, continued holding Ford stock in a separate account, she said.

That stock was sold for $2,457.89 on May 15.

“As I was not previously aware of the asset, I did not report my spouse’s financial interest on my two prior Public Financial Disclosure Reports, nor was it included in the other paperwork associated with my nomination,” Granholm wrote.

“As a public servant, I take very seriously the commitment to hold myself to the highest ethical standards, and I regret the accidental omission of my spouse’s interest in Ford,” she added.

“This is a commitment I made to you, the President, and most importantly the American people.

“My spouse and I have double-checked our financial assets, and there are no other reportable assets that were omitted from my financial disclosure report.”

South Africa’s neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict could cost the country a significant chunk of its gross domestic product if the US and the EU decide to punish Pretoria, Bloomberg reported on Friday, citing a Johannesburg-based partner of American banking and services giant JPMorgan.

South Africa could lose as much as $32.4 billion in export revenue, or almost 10% of its GDP, should the West decide to take action, Bloomberg reported, citing a note from Ndivhuho Netshitenzhe, an economist at Stanlib Asset Management.

Western nationshave sought to penalise countries that trade with Russiaand enable it to circumvent sanctions. The EU is currently discussing the 11th package of sanctions that would target third countries. However, according to media reports, the bloc’s ambassadors have so far failed to agree on any measures.

South Africa’s largest trading partner is China, followed by the US and Germany. The EU and US account for 30.4% of South Africa’s total exports, according to Bloomberg, while Russia’s share stands at a mere 0.23%. Moscow mainly buys manganese ore, citrus, and cars from Pretoria, while the US and Germany buy platinum, cars, and gold.

Pretoria has repeatedly insisted that it is neutralin the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. The African nation is also a member of the BRICS alliance of developing economies, which include Brazil, Russia, India, and China.

South Africa is hosting this year’s BRICS summit in August, set to be attended by the leaders of all member states. Pretoria has said it will not enforce the International Criminal Court’s warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was issued in March.

BRICS has already overtaken the G7(the group of seven industrialized nations, comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain, and the US)in terms of economic growth, and accounts for over 30% of global GDP. BRICS member states have been pushing for de-dollarization in light of Western economic sanctions targeting Russia that have seen billions of dollars’ worth of Moscow’s assets frozen abroad. Report Alleges Catholic Hospitals Linked to Transgender Surgeries, Abortions

The largest Catholic health system in the nation has allegedly funded and performed transgender surgeries and other “gender-affirming” medical interventions, defying traditional Catholic teachings, according to an investigative report released to The Epoch Times.

The report by the Lepanto Institute, a Catholic research and education organization, released on June 12, exposes CommonSpirit Health, a Catholic entity, for its alleged performance and funding of transgender surgeries and therapies,” including prescribing and providing cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers to patients.

A promotional video accompanying the report asserts: “The transgender craze has seized the world by the throat and is choking the life out of the bedrock of civilization: the family. And this is happening right under the nose of the Vatican.”

In the 64-page exposé, “CommonSpirit and the Sex-Change Industry,” author Michael Hichborn, founder and president of the Lepanto Institute, explains the connections within the Catholic health network in the United States and its direct ties to the Vatican.

Hichborn, a self-described lifelong Catholic, said he is both “saddened” and “horrified” by the moral decline within factions of the Catholic Church, and wants “to make sure that Catholics are Catholics and that those who operate in the name of the Catholic Church do so in line with all of her teachings.”

He claims that these medical interventions are happening in “gross defiance” of official values held by the Catholic Church, which has traditionally rejected transgenderism, homosexuality, abortions, and contraception—all of which the report alleges CommonSpirit is promoting at dozens of hospitals and medical facilities in the U.S.

“In addition to performing sex-change operations, CommonSpirit provides employee benefits that cover sex-change operations, transgender hormone treatments, and even puberty blockers for kids,” according to the report.

While it’s not known if CommonSpirit Health has performed transgender surgeries on children, the use of puberty blockers suggests it is treating minors for gender dysphoria in some capacity, Hichborn told The Epoch Times.

“The horrifying thing when you start getting into the science of the puberty blockers and the transitional hormones, is they do permanent damage to these kids. They talk about how puberty blockers just kind of put a pause on puberty or pubertal development, and that’s a lie,” he said. “It doesn’t put a pause on it; it actually damages these kids to the point that many of them wind up being sterile.”

CommonSpirit Health derives its Catholic identity from the Catholic Health Care Federation whose authority is granted by the Vatican’s Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in Rome, the report states.

“The only authority in the church that has the ability to judge the actions of CommonSpirit is the Vatican,” Hichborn told The Epoch Times. “Because CommonSpirit is a subsidiary of the Catholic Health Care Federation, it is subject only to the Pope and the Pope’s governing bodies in Rome.”

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) 990 forms not only confirm that CommonSpirit Health benefits from religious exemption tax breaks, but that the organization is part of the Catholic Church, Hichborn said.

CommonSpirit has allegedly promoted the LGBT agenda including transgender ideology and transitioning children in its podcasts and at its conferences, has raised funds for sex-change surgical equipment, performed surgical sterilizations, and at least one of its hospitals has reportedly performed elective abortions, the report indicates.

Given Canada’s own critical minerals list, and what we already know about China’s determination to achieve global high-tech dominance, there were clear reasons for reviewing the Neo Lithium purchase.

Kiev is waging an extensive information war against Russia and it began long before the military conflict

The Russia-Ukraine conflict isn’t just about the clash of armed forces on the battlefield. It has also been marked byunprecedented levels of confrontation in the fields of information and psychology, cognition and semantics.

Kiev has arguably achieved more success on the information front, than on the ground. There the “fighters” aren’t just journalists and information and psychological warfare specialists, but content makers and PR experts.Influencing the psyche, mindset, and emotions of ordinary people has become a big deal, as shaping Western public opinionis vital for President Vladimir Zelensky's regime.

The symbols of war

Anyone familiar with advertising and PR knows thattying an product to a colorful, memorable symbol, or slogan, will boost its popularity, especially in this era of short attention spans. During wartime, the same strategy works just as well with the news as with advertising and election campaigns.

In the current conflict, Ukraine has becomevery good at creating symbols. Media outlets instantly take up any popular symbol and make use of it in order to influence the mindset of ordinary Ukrainians.

Here’s a recent example. In May, despite the very difficult situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in Artemovsk (Bakhmut) and statements from several commentators – particularly the former Zelensky adviser Alexey Arestovich – that the army could soon retreat (as it eventually did), Ukrainian society wasn’t at all worried and had complete faith in the AFU’s ability to retain control over the city.

In fact, public attitudes towards the battle were largely shaped by the media. For example, at the beginning of the year therock band “Antytila” (“Antibodies”) released a videofor the song ‘Bakhmut Fortress.’ A few months later, itbecame viral. Ukrainians have since posted countless self-made versions of the video on social networks, affirming the myth of the impenetrable fortress of Bakhmut.

Suchsymbolsare created not only during ongoing battles,but also in the aftermath of the AFU’s obvious failures. For example, at the end of February, the Artemsol salt production enterprise announced that before the start of active battles for Soledar (which ended in January with the victory of the Russian Army), it collected 20 tons of salt from the mines. The salt was packed into 100,000 packages bearing thesymbolic inscription “Ukrainian Rock-Solid Strength.” Each package was sold for 500 hryvnia (about $13.50). According to the organizers of the fundraiser, mostproceeds were spent on kamikaze dronesfor the AFU.

Symbolic campaigns like these occur regularlyin Ukraine and are designed to encourage the population. In November of last year, when Russian troops withdrew from the west bank of the Kherson region and the AFU entered the eponymous regional capital, a national social media campaign urged users to place images of watermelons (the area grows them) on their profile pictures.

Kherson has been known for many things in its history – such as shipbuilding in the times of the Russian Empire and the USSR. However, for some reason, Ukraine’s propaganda decided to associate it solely with watermelons, and the imagery was well-received by society. In a state ofvictorious euphoria, people forgotabout the regular blackouts and ongoing fighting in the region.

Thedetection dog Patron [Ukrainian for “cartridge”]became another famous Ukrainian symbol. It helped Chernigov engineers clear the territories of mines. In addition to media exposure, Patron was even granted a meeting with Zelensky. Posters with a picture of the dog explained how to act if you detect an explosive object and can still be seen around Kiev and other cities. Atoy version of Patron even appeared on the shelves of children's stores, along with miniature models of [Soviet-designed] Mriya aircraft, [Turkish] Bayraktar drones, and [American] HIMARS vehicles.

Postage stamps– issued by Ukrposhta, Ukraine’s state postal service – have become another tool. While Zelensky claims that Ukraine was not involved in =last month's drone attack on the Kremlin==, Ukraine decided to issue a stamp showing this very attack. The head of Ukrposhta, Igor Smelyansky, commented that new stamps are often a forerunner of “positive events.”…

In more than a year of hostilities,Kiev’s use of symbols and memes to raise or maintain morale and help control the narrativehas been streamlined to a surprising extent. Google’s ranking of top Ukrainian search queries in 2022 is more proof. For example, in the “person” category, Ukrainians most often Googled “Alexey Arestovich” and showed interest in the“ghost of Kiev,”a legend of a supposed hero pilot which The Wall Street Journal admitted wasfake military propagandaintended to raise morale. In the “purchase of the year” category, the postage stamp “Russian Ship” was among the most popular search queries. This was a stamp issued in honor of thesoldiers on Snake Island who, as the fake story went, responded in abusive language to an offer from a Russian ship’s crew to surrender and fought to the death. These border guards were “posthumously” awarded the Hero of Ukraine decoration but later it was revealed that all of them had voluntarily surrendered and were alive.

Thetriumph of these symbols, which have endured long after being confirmed as fake, is a result of theinformation bubblein which Ukrainian society and much of the West has found itself. In the past year and a half since opposition media was blocked, government-controlled outlets are often the only source of information for Ukrainians.

The invisible front

“Today,information warfare is the core structureof any war. It is very important to have influence over a society that is involved in combat. Moreover, it is essential to convince the world community of the rightness of our actions in order to receive further support. Not only authorized persons can take part in this information war, but also regular citizens who ‘fight’ at their own discretion,” Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Anna Maliar said in February.

Information and Psychological Operations(IPsO) are intended to brainwash peopleand shape public opinion, and they are among Kiev’s most important strategies in the conflict with Russia. In combat conditions, these operations are primarilyaimed at demoralizing and disorganizing the enemy'sfront and rear and inspiring a hopeless, doomed atmosphere. Usually, their main task is to discredit the military and political command and highlight defeat and failure.

In December 2019, a network ofIPsO centerswith access tointernal and external mass media and internet resourceswas deployed in Ukraine. In the AFU, information and psychological operations fall under the jurisdiction of Special Operations Forces. This means that their work and personnel are kept top secret. However,some information has recently been revealed.

At the state level, the coordination and general management of cybersecurity and information operations is carried out by theNational Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC). The National Cybersecurity Coordination Center of Ukraine was establishedin June 2016 as a working body of the NSDC. The outfit includes the heads of ten government departments, such as the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, and the Main Directorate of Intelligence.

Cyber operations and information campaigns are directly implemented by the special IPsO centers which are part of the Special Operations Forces of the AFU.Currently, there are four such centers: the 16th center (military unit A1182, Guiva, Zhytomyr Region), the 72nd center (military unit A4398, Brovary, Kiev Region), the 74th center (military unit A1277, Lviv), and the 83rd center (military unit A2455, Odessa). (Russia is letting Ukraine know that they know where these centers are and they are now targets!)

In addition to counterintelligence activities, they organizepropaganda campaignson the internet and television, create and publish fake information, and, together with the SBU, coordinate the activities ofhacker groups, volunteer information communities, and other internet resources. Before active hostilities, the centers were estimated to employ around 500-550 people, while some sources claim they had over 1,000.

These units act independently and collaborate with similar foreign structures. Foreign centers and information troops give them access to large commercial resources.Activists and celebritiesare also involved in the process. “Since February 24, we have all become soldiers on the information front,” said Vadim Miskyi, Program Director of Detector Media.

TheUkrainian Cyber Alliancehas also operated in the country since 2016. This is a community ofcyberactivistsfrom different Ukrainian cities and from abroad. The community conducts cyberattacks, and hacks web pages and emails….

Canadian officials say the wildfires last week that sent a massive cloud of smoke into the U.S. and brought record-breaking pollutions to major East Coast cites could continue all summer.

"This is a first in the history of Quebec to fight so many fires, to evacuate so many people," Francois Bonnardel, the province's minister of public security said this past weekend. "We are going to have a fight that we think will last all summer."

Already this year, nearly 17,800 square miles have reportedly burned in Canada, forcing thousands across the country to evacuate and relocate. Right now, reports show 447 active fires in Canada, with 220 of them considered to be "out of control."

More fires are expected because of drought conditions and "long-range forecasts for warm temperatures," according to the Canadian government's natural resources branch.

President Biden met Thursday with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the matter and agreed to "deploy all available federal firefighting assets that can rapidly assist in suppressing fires," according to the White House.

Over 600 firefighters from the U.S. are expected to sent north of the border to assist Canada in suppressing the wildfires.

Recent data shows that on average a woman is abused by her partner every 13 minutes in the EU country

A gender equality group in Germany has described as “shocking” the results of a recent poll which found that one-third of men in that country consider it “acceptable” to physically strike a female partner during a heated argument.

A nationwidesurvey of 1,000 men and 1,000 womenin the EU country, published last week by children’s charity Plan International Germany, showed that33% of men aged between 18 and 35 see no issuewith using violence during a confrontation with a woman. A further34% of respondents admitted to having been violenttowards a woman in the past.

Karsten Kassner, a gender-equality advocate with the group Federal Forum Men, said that the results of the survey are “shocking” and suggested that it shows thatviolence by young men towards women is being normalized.

“It’s problematic that a third of the surveyed men trivialize violence against women,”Kassner said to Germany’s Funke newspaper. “This urgently needs to change.”

Statistics compiled by the German federal police in 2021 show thatmore than 115,000 women were victims of domestic violenceor spousal abuse that year – an average of 13 women abused every hour. That same year, 301 women were killed by their current or former partner.

Separately, the poll also revealed Germany’s adherence towards more-traditional gender roles, as well as adistasteamong nearly half of respondents towardspublic displays of affectionbetween same-sex couples.

52% of men, the poll suggested, believe it to be their role to be the main ‘bread-winner’ in a relationship. By comparison, the same number considered it to be the female’s job to run the household by performing tasks such as cooking and cleaning.

48% of those polledalso said theyfelt “disturbed” by witnessing homosexual couplesbeing affectionate towards one another in public. The results of the survey, a Plan International Germany spokesperson said in a statement, says that “traditional gender roles are still deeply ingrained in people’s minds” in the EU country.
