We're nearing the end of Friendship is Magic. Once the final 6 episodes get released, that would be it for the series. We would have gone through 222 episodes of FiM, a ton of movies, a ton of animated shorts, a ton of comics, and a ton of other spinoff material. And throughout it all, we got to witness our favorite characters grow and change over these past 9 seasons.

I'm making this thread to talk about that growth. There are some characters [Fluttershy] who only gotten worse with each season. The more assertive she became, the less likable she turned out. She changed from a sweet shy girl into a bit of a bitch lately. I use to really like her back in the day, but she's not same cute girl I met back in season 1.

On the flipside, Marble Pie and Coco Pommel still retained their cuteness after all these years. Marble Pie deserves a special mention because she's everything that Fluttershy should have been. Shy, sweet, and totally lovable. In the end, Marble turned out to be my #1 favorite pony from all these past 9 seasons of MLP. With Coco being a close 2nd.

Which is why I'm here ask: Since we're so near to the end, did any particular pony emerged as your top #1 favorite? We've had 9 seasons to see these characters change and grow, so I'm pretty sure everyanon here has an idea as to who that might be.

And on the contrary: Did any pony you once really liked become worse and worse with each passing season? I feel this way about Fluttershy and her devolution into what she is today. Going from top tier wife material into a pony who has frequent "assertive" Bitch moments.

I will take your word for it because I quit watching before Coco Pommel existed.

Although he was pretty much a one-note character for the first four seasons, I like what they did with Big Macintosh in Brotherhooves Social and Where the Apple Lies. Showing that he used to be more outgoing and that he's not really happy being the guy who doesn't talk much, but it's become so tied to his personality that he doesn't know how to change without being someone else. And then he starts to come out of his shell in season 7 and gets a girlfriend who's not related to him.

It's not much, but it's better than what they've done to the mane six over the years.

These are my top 10 favorites (in no particular order):

>Trixie

I honestly didn't like her very much back in the early days of FiM, probably because I thought of her as just a generic meme character. She really started to grow on me in recent seasons as she started to be fleshed out more and be paired with Starlight in a lot of episodes. They did a good job of keeping her personality intact without flanderizing her. She's a better example of the "arrogant, self-obsessed show-off" type of character than Rainbow Dash, because they writers normally try to give it some sort of foundation with Trixie. With RD, it's typically just "Dash acts like a cunt for no reason again".

>Sunset Shimmer

I could write several paragraphs on why I like Sunset so much (I'm a bit biased, admittedly). I think her most distinctive character trait is how she's the closest to a "real person" of any of the main characters. The writers have historically been very willing to take her character into areas where more "picturesque" characters, such as Twilight, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie, have almost never gone. Sunset is not the sort of bubbly, cartoonish person that we expect to see in MLP. This ends up making her more relatable and more sympathetic when she does slip up every now and again.

>Maud Pie

Remember when Maud was first introduced and Pinkie talked her up to the M6 as a fabulous, well-rounded character, only for them to be be immediately put off by the "muh rocks" bit? I like how that has retroactively become a meta-joke about this character. People who want to think that Maud is just a meme character will always linger on "muh rock autism". However, Maud has gotten a lot of characterization in every major episode she appears in, including her debut episode. Yes, the rocks thing is still there, but it's no longer the only thing you expect from her character.

>Rarity

Rarity is another character I wasn't really that fond of at first. I used to think she was too much of a one-note character, because she wasn't given that many moments to break out of her "muh dresses, darling" niche. However, I think she has gotten some terrific development over the course of the show, more than anyone else in the M6 by far. She easily fits into almost any episode these days and almost always makes shit better when she does show up.

>Applejack

Applejack used to be my favorite pony. I loved the simple country girl thing she had going on for a while, which was helped by the writers actually giving her stuff to do other than just working on the farm. Unfortunately, she got flanderized to hell and back as the show went on. The "appuls" meme has finally become a reality, as she is typically just used as a walking "dumb redneck" joke whenever the writers have the generosity to give her a speaking role these days.

>Luna

If we're talking about character growth, then I'd say Luna probably wins the award for "most blatant character growth". She's one of the few characters who started out with significant issues that were acknowledged she needed to work on. I've always sympathized with Luna and the predicament she finds herself in in the show. If they'd done more princess episodes, I would have liked it if they had touched on the fact that Luna is 1000 years out of place more often. It could be done well without making it memey like Luna Eclipsed.

>Celestia

My favorite depiction of Celestia is whenever she's actually depicted as the "flawless ruler with a soft side". We got a lot of this back in the early days of the show where her role as princess was always thoroughly acknowledged (remember when people bowed when Celestia entered a room?), but we also saw her crack jokes and smile as well. A Royal Problem did an excellent job of hearkening back to this. I do, however, dislike the "1000-year-old teenager" characterization the writers have been going with recently. This change always feels awkward because we haven't had that much exposure to her over the course of the show. If you want to pull something like that off, it takes a good explanation and a lot of time to make it work.

>Sweetie Belle

SB is definitely my favorite of the CMCs. I really liked her character arc surrounding her relationship with Rarity. She definitely feels like the CMC who got the most character growth over the course of the show. Applebloom was always too one-note and Scoots sorta got shafted by having all of her character episodes be de jure Ranbow Dash episodes. SB feels like the only one that really "grew up" and developed their own personality.

>Granny Smith

I feel that Granny Smith has always been handled pretty well by the show. I can't recall a time where they really went off the rails with her character. The writers have historically done a good job of balancing the "kooky old lady" side of her with her "realistic old person with realistic old person issues" side. Her portrayal in The Perfect Pear really cemented this duality of her character.

>Tirek

Tirek is a relatively recent favorite of mine. I liked him when he first showed up, but his portrayal in the end of S8 and now in S9 have really made him stand out. He's one of the few villains this show has ever had that started off as an intelligent and manipulative, but wasn't dumbed down as time went on (see Starlight, Discord, etc). I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how things end up for him and I really hope they don't ruin him in the finale.

>Marble and Coco stayed the same

No shit. They were only in like two episodes each and probably had half a dozen lines combined.

It's going to be like the Bionicle reboot, isn't it?
