Your comment made me question why Trump is interested in Greenland. And apparently it came out in a meeting in 2019, and he latched to it. Apparently in 2018 China published a document outlining its intention to explore and extract sources in the arctic, which led to the US scrambling to try to get to that first.

americans and the rest of the world should've seen this coming: the messeging that "america first" seems to imply "america alone" as it alienates its allies and damages any good will the US had in the world

If anything Trumps actions have shown that the US never had any good will in the world, and that all of our supposed "friendships" were based off of the ruling classes who forced national policy into supporting america for their own economic gain. As soon as that was threatened they pulled out the stops and anti-american sentiment flooded the press and social media
